Must Have
If you are looking into Eclipse plugins programming, this is the book. It not only teaches you the basics but also guides you to the best pratices on Eclipse development, with test driven philosophy. Needless to say, it also covers design patterns used by Eclipse.

Hands on tour through Eclipse 2!!! Plugin Development
This book takes you through a tour on plugin development. The main disadvantage of this book is that it is for Version 2 and not Version 3 of Eclipse. Yes you can somehow manage to translate and find your way around. Anyhow this is quite annoying not always successful and maybe one wants to learn more about the special advertised feature of Eclipse 3: rich client platforms. A topic inherently connected to plugin development. Please give us a new version of this book.

Too slowand long-winded
First, the good things.This is a nicely produced books.I say The Deitels know their stuff, but can't communicate.
I am a C++ programmer, and my wife is using this book for a C++ class. I am constantly amazed at the ideas she gets from this book until I read Deitels' bizarre explanations. Also, the exercises are ambiguous, so the course instructor sometimes interprets the requirements differently. The CD contains the exact text of the book, plus audio. Part of the text is presented in sequence, other parts you see in a popup window only if you happen to click on a busy-bee icon. The only use I see for the CD is the search function, which would help to deal with the disorganized presentation of the material. Unfortunately the search returns nothing, or a list of unrelated items. You need to copy the CD to the hard drive to speed up access. The free Visual C++ compiler is nice, but don't run multiple copies to get multiple editors, as you can destroy your source file. Check out Eckel, Lippman, Meyers, Stroustrup.

Out of date material at best.
After getting past the errors you'll find that this book is just plain out of date.If this book is to be of any use it needs a major rewrite with the latest version of the transmitter and tuner as references.Don't waste your time with this one.

Poor index, useless software
This book was a required textbook for a college class I was taking & I was far from satisfied.Whenever I wanted to quickly reference a subject the index was utterly useless.It does not cover major functions & has no cenralized reference section for commands.
The Deitels's Preach C++, Some Hard Lessons To Follow
The nature of this text is not only for an individual to learn C++ programming, but able to understand what is written in all program examples given. However, because there are so many good examples, the reader may feel overwhelmed by all lessons in the book, where simple concepts may be hard to acquire. The best book for rookies

A Book of Research, not Ideas
This book is academic and a dry read. There are better books out there which address this same material that makes for an easier read. But if you want to read the original work that paved the road for those books and usability now, here it is. Academic research that is usability's foundation!

Very satisfied
I bought this book for class and aced the class. I found this book helpfull and inspiring for people in the web usability field of study. Even though this is 1994 book, web usability aticles apply to today world as well.

Book is great but CD has a problem
The book is well written in clear language and the example scripts are written in a special font making it easy to understand. I just cannot get the CD containing the compiler to work and it's vital to the lessons.
Good for learning the core language but not much else
This book is not bad if you are mostly interested in learning the basics of the language but without the few "bonus" chapters it has at the end the Linux content is close to zero. In the standard part of the book the only thing about Linux that is mentioned is how to compile using GCC, which isn't even strictly Linux because it can also run on Windows.
Poor.. Very poor
This book is full of mistakes. It also begins by teaching you to program one way, and then tells you that this is wrong. I picked up this book as a refresher, because I have not done any C++ or UNIX in 10 years, but even I could pick out the mistakes in the book. It does not explain the important aspects of C++ very well, skipping over most things with just a cursory description of what is going on. Do not get this book.. ... Read more

Well written, well illistrated. Even as new to html as I am it is an easy step by step guide to building a web page that even I can do.

A short, fun way to get a web page done
This book is definitely for beginners, but then that's the whole point. The author starts out with the very basics showing you how to design a web page, telling you how you're going to do it and then taking you through all the steps one-by-one. There's a brief introduction to html and using css and then she jumps right in getting you to create a wep page.

Buy This Book
Someone here said they liked Windows Xp Complete a lot, so I looked at that, and bought it, too.I have several computer books I consider "Golden".Well written, complete, easy to read and understand, and, most importantly, written by someone who is clearly a "sage" in the field.This is one of those books.I laugh when a reviewer expects EVERYTHING out of one book - that's why I got "WinXP Complete" too.This one goes deep into the guts of Windows where it counts.If you need complete knowlege of aspects - Networking, for example, then, of course you need a Networking book.Mr. Minasi is quite thorough where it counts, though - running Windows Pro with assurance and authority.

Readable and Detailed
Mark Minasi is a great writer, with the ability to take a complex subject, like Windows XP, and make it fairly readable. This book is typical of the "Mastering" series, however, and is not intended for light weights. If you are a home or private user, you may be better served with something akin to the "Windows for Dummies" variety. I'm not trying to be condescending, just realistic. This book is highly detailed and goes well beyond the average users needs. However, the first 89 pages of this book present a color plated introduction to using XP, which I found very helpful and better than most related products on the market. The first 89 pages alone are worth the price of this book for most of us. As an administrator, this book will also serve you well with its detailed explanations, extensive graphics and screen shots, and Mark's interpretation of Microsoft's technical manuals. Best organized, clearest, most readable reference available

Excellent for Win Admins wanting to learn Linux
This was one of the first books I picked up when I decided to take the plunge into Linux.Being an MCSE and Windows administrator, I drastically improved my understanding of how Linux is similar, and differs from Windows.If you're a Windows guy or gal who wants to make sense of Linux, I highly recommend you pick up this book!

doesn't cover OSX
I bought this to recommend to friends who are shifting to Mac. While it has lots of good and still relevant information, it was written before OSX so many things are changed. Despite that, t's handy for those who are familiar with Windows to find the equivalents in the Mac.

Still Useful!
If you are learning the Mac or Windows OS as a second language then this book is the best investment you could make.Terms are translated between the two environments by quick, simple look-up in a translation dictionary.More important, the translations are actually useful.The concepts are translated, not just the words.Look up a term and you get an explanation of the equivalent idea and jargon, even if the terms have no exact match.This is the book to have in your hands while you talk to foreign tech support. I've purchased a couple of copies of this book each year since it came out, mainly because other people borrow mine and then beg to keep it.I was buying another couple of copies today in Jan 2003 (one for me, one for my new tech support person) and I realized that there are very few computer reference books that are still so useful 4 years after publication.This is one computer reference book that will get dog-eared.

All You Need To Know And More.
Having been recommended by a Tutor on a recent course in the States, I bit the bullet and ordered myself a copy.This book gives all that it promises.The well written text treats you like an Adult whilst not forgetting that we are not all fully A+ Certified.It has already gotten me out of a few jams and I would fully recommend it to anyone else. For anyone from the UK reading this review, the language does not need an American Dictionary to read so it's great for both sides of the Pond.

Many errors - disappointing
Minasi's earlier editions were good (and hardcover - what happened to that?).This one was apparently rushed out without any proofreading just to keep up with the Joneses (Mueller).There are so many errors in the first two chapters, it's unbelievable... Maybe the rest of the book actually got re-written and proofed, but the first part is very disappointing and makes me unlikely to grab this volume when I need an accurate answer.

Sybex and the authors have updated this long running and successful text with the 16th edition. The rapid changes in personal computer hardware mean that you might want to consider getting this book for its comprehensive advice of a wide range of hardware items.
