1-0 out of 5 stars This Dummies is a mess!
Dummies books have been a staple of my computing/software resource library for a long time. This book was very disappointing. If you're looking for an organized presentation of the functions and capabilities of Adobe 7, leave this on the shelf. There are few visual examples in the book and very few tutorials that lead you through a topic in any organized way at all.To get something out of this book, I found myself jumping all over the place, following topic and function chapter references tossed in all too frequently, sifting through meaningless and annoying chatty writing, trying to piece together a tool's functionality on my own.And did I mention the writing style?Distracting, distracting, distracting.I felt like I was sitting in a computer class for octogenarians with ADD. Get to the point!!Leave it on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
This book is easy to use and understand. I was comfortable using the program in a week.

2-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop 7 for Dummies
Reads like stereo instructions. Too many technical graphics terms for a novice photo editor. I usually like the "for dummies" books but this one falls way short of the mark. I would recomend this book only to a seasoned graphic artist that was already familiar with the terminology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook
This was my college text for an intro level class within my information systems major at the University of Texas at Tyler. While I was first a bit worried over the sheer size of the book I soon came to love it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as some may suggest...
This book is too dense, basicly all you are getting is one third of the book on the subject. However, the explanation is well written and clear, but it follows few chapters after given example code.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book on C (Emphasis on Beginners)
This book is used in FSU's CGS 3408 course: "Introduction to Programming with the C Language."In the preface, the Deitels state that this book is for everyone (beginners to experts) who want to learn C.They've made a very good stab at that goal, but realistically, I'd have to say that those who are professional programmers in other languages will find this book too long for their needs. For beginners (and even those moderately versed in other languages), this is an excellent book.I really have only three minor gripes about it:

5-0 out of 5 stars The best C++ book!
Excellent book. You need some feedback before you read it, but this book is complete and good reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable great book
The reading is tedious, and in my opinion he does not cover some concepts thoroughly, such as casting. On the other hand, it is "The" C++ reference, although it isn't perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Network textbook
This is a great book for learning the CCNA material. It will teach you all of the major points that you need to study to pass the exam. Even if you are not taking the exam and just want information on how networks are designed, this is the book. I found it a good read and the practice CD was priceless in learning how to issue commands to the various Cisco routers. A great book and worth the money too!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearify something....5 stars not accurate...
Everyone here critizes<< typos here and there.. lacking this and lacking that... WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND if this book is so bad... remember that next time you write a negative review.. that will help us (the newbies) know where to get this right information....
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingand frustrating
For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads. However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity. In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try.Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm. After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass!My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book. Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam.None of which was covered with enough detail within this book. Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities). In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam.I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam.Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day.Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text). Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again. The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure! All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars YOU WANT TO BE IN PICTURES...!!
Are you a Macintosh filmmaker and DVD designer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author David Pogue, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is designed to give you a grounding in professional filming and editing techniques.
4-0 out of 5 stars OK, I see how that's done!
After searching Apple's support site for help with using these two programs, I turned to David Pogue's excellent manual.I have several of David's manuals and this was certainly up to his standards. Easy to read and follow.Although there is a tremendous amount of meat in the programs, you probably wouldn't discover all the potential without spending a little time with another excellent Missing Manual.I would recommend this to anyone interested in building a professional iMovie or creating a smooth DVD collection of favorite images or clips. And, with almost no effort at all, you can build an out of the ordinary slide show made complete with music, fades and a nice variety of special effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be your own movie director yourself - painless!
It would be natural to think why does you need to buy this 22 dollars book, if iMovie and iDVD is so easy as Apple claims. But unfortunately, it is not easy as they say, (as all software vendors which want to earn more money by save the cost to print clear written manual) It need some extra help, with more English, I mean. In this point of view, this book is more than worth, in particular, you can learn more tips and advice to successfully make your own movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give you clear look of little giant
This book gives you the bird-eye view of the world's renowned photo management software, it has some useful information for amateur photographer who is intended to use iPhoto software, written in plain english. It is little interesting that one-thirds of the entire book contents are cover how to choose the right digital camera and how to take a good shot, of course, you don't have to worry since its another two-thirds of pages are fulled about some kind of "soft" thing, which is about acquire, manage, tag, retouch and share or archive your pictures.

It is excellent as far as it goes. I wish it was somewhat easier to use by being more complete.

I like Robins ways of teaching, and her book is great. For me it is a bit confusing as I have to keek refering back to other sections. Otherwise great.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor effort
Robin Williams usually does a superb job - she's fun to read, has a perspective which is easy for the reader to understand and puts information clearly while not talking down to readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid foundations for C# 2005 programming
Using this book, with the MS Visual Studio .NET 2005 version, the MS Visual C# 2005 version, and the MS SQL Server 2005 version, one can learn a lot with the new platform. The codings are very much the same as the 2003 version. It is not too difficult for any one who has done C, C++, Java, or Visual BASIC programming. The exercises are very good and have been tested in corporate training sites.I am currently using an older version of this book, for a training class with 14 electrical engineers. Four people are using this book. They are happy with the book, exercises and the software. They are working on their final projects now.

5-0 out of 5 stars good guide
It is a very good guide book for beginners really. I knew maybe just a little about Mac. But definitely not enough to help me go though a smooth work process. This book teaches me shortcuts and the necessary surviving skills I needed. I would recommend to other people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
I've been using Windows since the early 1990s and recently bought my first Mac. At first I thought this wasn't the book I wanted.I wanted to learn the OS on its own, not in "translation." For example, you'll find things like this in this book: "Finder = Windows Explorer," "Dock = Taskbar," etc. I thought it would hinder learning in a way total-immersion wouldn't; I'd hoped to learn to use the Mac directly. So after my husband picked up "Switching to the Mac" the first day I had the computer--in order to figure out how to network the Mac to our PCs and printers, and to transfer files, etc. (all of which is in this book)--I ordered four other books. I wanted to read them like other reviewers did: straight through, fun learning. But, it's not as easy as I'd hoped to learn a whole new operating system and, for me, the manuals don't prove to be fun reading -- as cheeky as their humor can be. So, I find myself reaching for "Switching to the Mac" as a necessary reference book. It presupposes that the reader is proficient at using a computer, but not a Mac (unlike other books, which either assume no computer knowledge or are written in "Mac language" for those familiar with previous Mac operating systems.)
5-0 out of 5 stars "Switching to the Mac" - Entertaining and Informative
Are you a long time Windows user that is new to the Mac?

4-0 out of 5 stars Good program, difficult to learn
The product is a very good one but difficult to learn, I have spent much time in self help. The documentation is difficult to use and to follow.I had to separately purchase an instruction book.Particularly confusing is how it organizes the photo and the methods to categorize, tabing, collections, etc. After getting the hang of it, editing photos is really fun, and the results are great. Printing and emailing is rather simple.Good program, Thumbs Up.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must read.
I struggled with Photoshop Elements 4 until I found Deke McClelland's Photoshop Elements 4 one-on-one.His training methods are well designed and will lead you to an understanding of the power of Photoshop Elements 4 I never imagined. The video is better than first class and the book is written in a very clear way that leads the student on a guided descovery of Elements 4.I asked my local camera store for help and they promised something in the future. When I cruised through Amazon.com and read other reviews of this book I simply took a chance and bought it.Wow, what a wonderful surprise.Deke won't let you down.Paul

4-0 out of 5 stars You need to know the target audience
I believe this book is targeted at new programmers or programmers who have no experience with VB language. I have read the previous edition cover to cover. I have to say this book does a good job of bringing your (VB) programming skills to a level that is just below commercial level. That is to say, despite the sheer volume, it does not teach you everything about VB.NET, many major advanced concepts are glossed over. For example, what is exactly the difference between a module and a class?(not explained clearly) Why are why namespace names seems to be hierachial?(glossed over) What's a inner class(Not included)? Why do we need structures? Why can't we just use classes for everything(Not included)?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best Visual Basic Book ........Period!
Just when I thought their second edition was the best, the Deitels have certainly outdone themselves once again. This book flat rocks. This book contains so much useful information it is unbelievable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, the one-stop shop for Java
This book really is the one-stop shop for Java language information. While many complain that the page count is very high and the book is slightly heavy, this is actually a *good* thing. I love the fact that all this info is in ONE book. One book to buy, one book to carry around, one book to reference, one book to bind them...hey wait a minute!
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, AND door stop
This book is really useful to have on hand, but it is HUGE for a nutshell book. I realize that they need every page to document the code it is just makes it hard to keep this book on the desk.Over all I think the book could have used more examples on how to make the method calls rather than showing the methods and what they do.Over all if you need a book that documents most of the java libraries this is an excellent choice, but don't expect to pick up this book if you have no programming experience and learn how to call these methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible
I use this Java book more than any other programming book I've ever had. That's probably because it's a reference book. Although all the reference material I could need is available online, I still like having the book on the desk next to me so I can look up a class or a method without playing around on the computer. I became a Sun Certified Java Programmer several years ago and although I've read many Java books before then and since then, the only book I would be hard pressed to do without is this one! ... Editorial Review

In this eagerly awaited second edition, Grady Booch draws upon the rich and varied results of those projects and offers improved methods for object development and a new, unified notation. With numerous examples implemented in C++, Booch illustrates essential concepts, explains the method, and shows successful applications in a variety of fields.Booch also givespragmatic advice on a host of issues, including classification, implementation strategies, and cost-effective project management.A two-time winner of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best OO book on the market.
This explains every facet of OO design and analysis.I bought this book years ago and have used it to reinforce many conversations about OO design. What I have found is that the old timer C and COBOL programmers have a very difficult time even thinking like this. This book should be on every developers book shelf. Many of the topics are so common in todays programming disciplines that many students do not even realize they are following it.Many of the patterns and concepts are now so common place in languages like Java and C# that the new developer just thinks this way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great , tough Book, not for beginners or Non C++ programmers
Mixed opinions about the book. The author never claims that beginners can easily understand nor he warrants that you need not know C++. It may take sevaral months or years to read this book. If you say you know this book for 100%, you are only few steps away from Booch's level. His process is great if we have the time, patience and comfort to follow it and apply it. You should have some prior knowledge of OO to understand Booch's language. Of course C++ basics. Though the chapter on Booch Notaion is dated, you still need to read it to follow the remaining chapters. But if you have read UML, booch notation is not tough to understand. I wish he re-writes with additional Java examples and gives some business applications like banking/insurance examples rather than Gardening Sensors and Heaters, and also drop notations chapter and assume that readers know UML. It will be great if he guides us how his process fits into the internet era within tons of frameworks/patternsaround.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic well worth the read
This is a very good book on the subjects of OOA/OOD. It emphasizes concepts and has a strong academic flavor, which I appreciate "accidentally." Although the particular C++ programming language is not the focus, you need to know a least some C++ to understand the example code snippets, which helps you grasp the concepts.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book
With only a few months of OO programming about 6 years ago, I needed a book to take me from the beginning again. This book delivered. I found I have needed to read some chapters several times to 'get it', particularly chapters 7 & 8. I like the way he writes an example and then steps you through it, breaking down the code into sections. It was easy to read and easy to refer back to. I still have a couple of chapters to review and I'll be looking for more of his books.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a programmer or novice programmer with little or no object-oriented programming experience? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Jesse Liberty and Brian MacDonald, have done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a primer on the C# 2005 language specifically, and object-oriented software development in general.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a beginner book! for novices!!
I am sorry but this book is not a novice or begiiner book on C#.

3-0 out of 5 stars it's a little much
For learning how to program from scratch, i wouldn't recommend this book. It's to fast through javascript. Yet I haven't read all 1000 pages yet, that's what I've taken from it so far. Seems good for asp and stuff like that though.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great all-in-one, but too Microsoft-centric
This book overall is the best general introduction to website development technologies that I've found. I'm coming from the perspective of a professor who needed to teach HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and any server-side scripting language to my students. After deciding to use PHP, I loked for several appropriate books, and I did find numerous good options, but at the very most, any given book would only cover two of the technologies I needed. Thus, I would end up with at least three or four books that had way more than necessary and would cost up to $200 for one course.
1-0 out of 5 stars Deitel Considered Dangerous
I was unfortunately subjected to the second edition of this book during my graduate studies at DTU. In my opinion there's only one good thing to say about this book, and that is that it's the only book I've seen where you get a comprehensive introduction to all of the techniques for developing and serving web-pages. Unfortunately, the authors are living in a Miocrosoft Internet Explorer only world, which especially is reflected in their chapters on (x)html and javascript. Problem is, no version of IE is actually capable of understanding xhtml, so what you are in fact taught is xhtml 1.0 served as text/html which is treated as hmtl 4.01 in all browsers. Even worse, the third edition has rewritten all the examples in xhmtl 1.1 which *should*not* be served as text/html. Even worse, the xhtml examples given will trigger an error in IE 6 that will get IE 6 to behave as IE 5.5 in quirks mode - inclusive the css box model error. As to the javascript examples, the book isn't teaching you the w3c DOM but only the IE DOM, thus all examples using eg document.all will possibly fail in some browsers. And document.write isn't allowed if you are serving your pages as application/xhmtl+xml. I'm considering this book dangerous because it doesn't teach you how to code according to the w3c standards but only according to the 'Microsoft standard' ... Read more
