5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Reference Source
As we have all come to expect from Robin Williams, this book is written in a clear, precise manor. The illustrations are all very helpful.I particularly like the way the windows of each application are illustrated with details about each item within the window.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Mac Apps
Book is very informative, easy to understand and use. I bought this book for school (I don't own a mac), but there were many things I learned about iTunes (only non Mac program I use) I wouldn't have known without reading this book. Definitely would recommend for anyone wanting to get the most out of their Mac.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers some nifty short-cuts, tricks, and customized set-ups
John Tollett and Robin Williams' Cool Mac APPs: A Guide To iLife 05, .Mac And More may sound familiar: it's in its second edition now, and continues to back Williams' Little Mac Book by offering detailed explanations and tutorials of the main applications Mac OS X installs on your computer. From iLife applications to setting up files for Internet storage and sharing or synchronizing calendars and contact info with a PDA, COOL MAC APPS offers some nifty short-cuts, tricks, and customized set-ups.

2-0 out of 5 stars Superceded by better books
Agreed that Marty Hall knows how to write and produces great books. Knowing this, I can heartily recommend his more recent "More Servlets and JSPs" as it provides more relevant up to date information. For the Java side of things, this offers the most bang for your buck.2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated, unfriendly
I would be the first person to say that Marty Hall is a gifted writer. His books on Servlets and JSP are my favorite computer books, but this book is far from great. The style is cold, the material delivered too fast with too little explanations and all in all, the attempt to cover everything in one fell swoop fails. I was using the book in a class that tried to cover the material the book does, and as a learning resource it is way too shallow for thorough knowledge, more as an 'In a Nutshell' style instead. 4-0 out of 5 stars A standard
This was used in an MBA-level course on "Development of Web-Based Applications."The course centered on the management of application development, and the actual web-development component of the course was pretty light. However, I've used this book as a resource before and if you use Java this is a must-have. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
A collection of tons of information!Too bad it is put together in such a poor organizational fashion.Difficult to follow from start to finish.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Resourceful...
This book is very resourcefull. It shows you various web scripting languages, provides examples and sample questions. If you are not familiar with scripting language this can be a starting point for you.
1-0 out of 5 stars skips needed information
The book wastes your time talking about what is on the Internet (and what the Internet is - hello, the year is 2005!) instead of teaching you how to program for it.It is not a programming book but an extensive advertisement for off-the-shelf programs and various websites. The CD does not contain the information indicated in the book, nor does the website.I attempted to contact them about this, but received no answer.I have enjoyed other Dietel books, but this one really falls short of their standard. You better know VBscript or JavaScript before attempting to use this text. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars on HG "j2ee_consultant"'s comment below.
HG"j2ee_consultant":
1-0 out of 5 stars Two words : Don't Buy
Like other recent reviewers, this book was very hard to read as it had no useful explanations for the source codes e.g: Why they were written like that on a first place. I also think that these guys have strong affiliation with indian company. They are stink as this publisher never published good quality books (the content and the presentation). They tried to save pages by condensed the content of the book for each page. My life experience is that indian company is very stingy and it never pays attention to detail and presentation. I bought this book because it was the first book ever written in web services thwo years ago. Now there are much better books that this book about webservices such as: Service-Oriented Architecture : A Field Guide to Integrating XML and Web Services by Thomas Erl and J2EE Web Services -- by Richard Monson-Haefel.I also had read these books.
2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read and useless as a reference
I had a hard time reading this book.It is good in the sense that I got some of the code working pretty quickly, but once I started to ask WHY things worked, I was lost with the book.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I purchased this book just for the information on "section breaks." What little there is, in a word, [bad]. It is therefore totally useless to me .... Here is a quote from that section:4-0 out of 5 stars Stillstruggling
I found this a little easier to understand and use than "The Complete Idiot's Guide."I don't know what that makes me. It is pitched at a more elementary level and the jokes and cartoons are better. It is more frank about the limitations of Word 2000Neither book deals with the problems of crashes and glitches, and when (and how) you have to telephone the [$$$]-please have-your-credit-card-number-ready line for help. I'm still struggling (having come from Wordperfect for DOS). 3-0 out of 5 stars "Average" sums it up best
This is right on target: bought this not expecting much (I'm not a big fan of the dummy books). My wife wanted to start 'learning the computer' which translated into Word processing. This book really did serve as a good introduction to Word. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for making those fancy DVDs
After several trips to car shows with my husband, I had lots of beautiful photos sitting in iPhoto ready to print.I thought a DVD would be more useful and enjoyable for him, and tried to make a DVD project - NOT!Having already used The Missing Manual books, I promptly went out and bought this one.Great choice, as it filled in the blanks and gave me lots of ideas also.I am a photographer, not a tech person, and am pretty clueless when it comes to creating projects on the computer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive guide to working with video on the Mac
I had recently started using a Mac at work, and suddenly I was put in a position to work with video on the Mac. Mr. Pogue's other books had been very helpful to me as I began to learn my way around the Mac, so I thought I would pick up this one to help me with my video work. I was very glad that I did. You see, iMovie HD has tools that help your movie look professional, but the iMovie HD help files are very tedious to go through. There is a great deal of referencing, cross-referencing, and nothing is smoothly laid out. This book is another story, as it is very well laid out with clear instructions and illustrations. It is very long, but since these applications are powerful, it would be expected that any clear explanation of them is going to require some space.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Buy It!
Very informative AND entertaining! If you feel you are even the least bit interested in breaking into digital film making this book is fantastic. I have been using iMovie for several years now and have a camcorder. However, I thought this book might help me kick things up a notch. It certainly will. I have only gotten through the first fifty pages, but I've already learned enough justify this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Hardware Book
Some of the best advice I've ever had about computer books came from a pair of friends who happened to be married to each other. The husband told me, "If you're looking for a reference manual, always buy the smallest one on the market so that you'll carry it around with you."The wife said "Always buy the biggest, fattest book on the market because it has all the answers."In this case, the wife happened to be right- -with its 1400 pages and 2 CDs, this book is certainly the biggest, fattest PC hardware book that I've seen on the market. It also contains the clearest writing and most useful information that I've seen for books of its type. This book will tell you how to upgrade your hard drive, choose a new video card, protect your computer from lightning strikes, and a lot of other important facts besides. But it's too big and bulky to make it easy to carry around.1-0 out of 5 stars Title s/b upgrade your very old pc to one not quite so old
This book may be of some use to someone that has a 386 or 486 and wants to know something about them.If you are seriously looking to upgrade to a pentium III or IV, it is useless.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book if you want to upgrade your 486

A Perl novice picking this book up will be impressed. It's big, the prose is good, and it seems to have a command of the subject.
3-0 out of 5 stars Poor CD installation ...dies in the middle
I have only read the first chapter. Looks okay. However, I bought it with CD rom at original price (not from amazon) and I have such a hard time installing it. The Damn thing doesn't install on either of my win2k machines nor on Red hat 9 which I dual boot with one of my win2k.1-0 out of 5 stars I'm falling asleep
Because of my school, I own 4 of these hideous beasts. While the books contain a rich assortment of information on their particular subjects, they can be verbose in the extreme. Additionally, they seem to be poorly organized as some other reviewers have mentioned. It is very difficult to pick up these books and stay interested for more than 5 minutes. I've had to purchase other books to actually learn the languages and utilize the Deitel books as references. Some people may find these books to be fine; I suspect we all learn differently. 5-0 out of 5 stars On the short list
Five stars.I recommend 3-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Guide to NOT SO CREATIVE HTML
When I was told that this book was going to be used for my technology class I was kind of excited because I am fairly familiar with the Lynda.com material. I had picked up her Learning Flash 5 CD-ROM and walked away with a feeling that it was money well spent, and that I had come away with a great deal of knowledge about Flash. Now keeping this in mind, when I picked up this title and read through it (mind you unlike some reviewers I read cover to cover), I did not feel like there was too much content that I could walk away with and use in any real world situtation. The techniques she used, produced very amateur-like pages that would not pass for a high school student's work. Mind you, for some of the fundamental HTML concepts the book was good, but for any real world stuff I felt like I was lookig at those pages where you know the person made it in Frontpage 98' without the plug-ins. Any of the cool stuff like the Javascript Rollovers was gone over so rushed and with so little detail, that it would have been better to have omitted it from the book. I am sorry this book just really was not worth the money.. I would look to that HTML Quickstart book over this one any day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Combination of Design and Code for Beginners
I like the idea of combining a designer and a developer to create an HTML book. The "family reunion" at the front of the book is banal and adds nothing to the book, but once by that, it's pretty smooth sailing.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A good book to waste your time and energy.
If you are looking for a book that just dumps in a lot of spaghetti uncoordinated meaningless text where you have to brake your head every other paragraph to find out what the authors intended to say, then this book is for you. I am going to list the points I don't like about this book:
5-0 out of 5 stars Most Strategic ASP.NET Book Going!
Given some initial hurdles, I fervently believe that Alex Homer's (plus 5 other authors) "Professional ASP.NET 1.1" is the most strategic book going, to really learn to program in ASP.NET.Or, from my life, it was the best thing I found after 3 years and more than $1000 worth of .NET-programming books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Book if you are serious about getting ASP .NET knowledge
If you are really serious about getting ASP .NET knowledge and you are in real development environment where you need in depth knowledge of ASP .NET paradigm and controls, then this is the book for you. What I can't find at other places, this books describes it beautifully and clearly. I am very happy to get this book and I really enjoy reading it. I highly recommend this book for all types of developers, beginner, intermediate or advanced. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars iPhoto 5 Missing Manual
The book was as advertised, arrived in very good time and in excellent condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look out! This book is obsolete.
Do not buy this book unless, for some reason, you are determined to use an obsolete version of iPhoto. The newest version of iPhoto is iPhoto 6 (SIX!!!) and it is VERY different from iPhoto 5.(Sorry David, I wish your book was for iPhoto 6.I would buy it then. I do have your Mac OS X Tiger Edition, and it is GREAT!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, beautifully, and worth every penny!
Picking up this book, the first thing you notice is how great is looks. It's printed in full color, with screen shots on nearly every page. I started the book expecting to jump right in to using iPhoto, but found that the entire first section of the book covers buying the right digital camera and a a guide to taking great looking pictures. I skimmed this section rather quickly as I already owned a camera and understand the basics of lighting and composing pictures. What I did read looked very useful for someone getting into photography for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro to the world of type...
As an avid reader and (some would argue) somewhat-successful writer, I spend a lot of time looking at the printed word. But I don't have a full appreciation behind the effort and thought that goes into how that word gets transferred from writer to reader on paper.Robin Williams has a great book for those of us who are not professionals in the world of typesetting...The Non-Designer's Type Book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Get the "The Non-Designer's Design Book" instead
I'm a big fan of the author, but I feel this is not one of her best books. She clearly illustrates all the important type concepts, but the book felt too long for the amount of information presented.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide to help get your message into print.
I have been reading Robin Williams' books since "The Mac is Not a Typewriter" came out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too concise.
If you're new to programming, do NOT pick up this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars As Simple As Possible, But No Simpler
The enormous success of C Programming Language is, IMHO, because it is simple, flexible and powerful. The whole language is very well written by K&R in the classic book. Every sentence in that book is precise yet complete. For novice, the learning curve of C++ is steep because it is not as simple as C. At least, at first, software developers are afraid of the huge number of features and the inter-connections it offers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for experienced Java Programmers looking at C++
As another reviewer mentioned, Lippman's _Essential C++_ is influenced by the approach taken in _Learning Perl_ (Schwartz).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's an okay read
This is a very lightweight read regarding the process of production. It's more of a personal journal, blog-style account than anything substantial a reader can learn from. However, it does have merit in that respect. So, if you're a newbie and want to get your feet wet, this may be a book you'd like to read to get yourself into those baby steps.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hillman should get an Oscar.
For anyone wanting to create a short film, web or otherwise, this book is a great starting point. Curtis takes you through some of his works and offers insights into projects - success and not so successful. The candid approach to the work runs more like a one man show of dialogue. Do not expect a How To format. Curtis is all about letting you in on his experiences.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ver good read
This is a very good book. I didn't think too highly of Hillman before this book, and was under the impression that he was sort of a hack, and happened to be in the right place at the right time for much of his design career.

The world's most business-critical transactions run on Unix machines, which means the machines running those transactions attract evildoers. Furthermore, a lot of those machines have Internet connections, which means it's always possible that some nefarious remote user will find a way in. The third edition of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
This book is just what I was looking for.Excellent Security Guide to day to day security issues at my workplace.Information about TPC and UDP ports and their security risks have been very useful.
2-0 out of 5 stars Order a wrong edition
I saw that there is a bargain of another paperback edition on the page of 3rd edition, so I didn't recheck whether it is 3rd edition. So I end up in buying 2 books, 2nd and 3rd editions, because I need the 3rd edition for my class. It would be better to put edition number up in the page, not only paperback or library binding!

5-0 out of 5 stars A mile wide, several inches deep, great for filling in gaps
I hate to repeat the cliche, but if you can only buy one security book this year and you are a *nix geek, this should be it, hands down.As some point out, you can probably find everything in this book online, but then again you can find anything online, so why buy any books at all?I don't like giving 5 stars; this book left me no choice.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From a programming student with too much time
A wonderfully helpful book. Some of the directions don't work, such as copying key files to hard disk, unless you ignore the autoplay features on the disk. A few of the graphics are confusing as well as directions being a little too vauge. In spite of that, there is enough clear, concise information to let a person of average intelligence work their way throuigh the lessons and learn Java, with or without formal instrution.

5-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic computer programming book
As a compulsive computer programming autodidact, I rate *Simply Java* the best computer language book I have ever read. Java is a hard language to learn. Most books get you bogged down in abstract exercises. *Simply Java* gets you writing practical GUI applications almost immediately. It's worth every penny. I'm going to stop writing this review right now and study another chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
I'm an experienced C++ programmer with access to JBuilder version 5.I did most of the examples and learned Java along the way.I was able to contruct simple GUI tools for my job as a software engineer based on the examples from the book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GarageBand: The Missing Manual Delivers As Promised
Although I would have preferred the new edition outlining the latest version of GarageBand, this book gave me what I wanted. I was able to finally USE GarageBand, whereas before I couldn't figure out how to do anything with it. The "missing manual" idea comes through again! Sometimes, you just need to read the manual.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS is your Garageband book
After using Apple's super-duper Garageband for about a month now, I finally decided on picking up a supplement book. I read through 4 of them (I work at a library), and knowing what was needed to be in there, I can now confidently announce: THIS is the one to get. It's got what you'll need to complement your recording experience. THIS is the one with THE MOST USEFUL INFORMATION.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, beginner to advanced topics, well done
GarageBand is great fun and so easy it doesn't come with any kind of manual - without this book I was able to easily throw some loops together and create "music".Even my four year old daughter was able (with a minimum amount of help) to put together some piano, guitar and drum loops that sounded great. However, after the cool-factor wore off, GarageBand went back into a dusty corner of the Applications folder, until I picked up this book.
