5-0 out of 5 stars Best OO book on the market.
This explains every facet of OO design and analysis.I bought this book years ago and have used it to reinforce many conversations about OO design. What I have found is that the old timer C and COBOL programmers have a very difficult time even thinking like this. This book should be on every developers book shelf. Many of the topics are so common in todays programming disciplines that many students do not even realize they are following it.Many of the patterns and concepts are now so common place in languages like Java and C# that the new developer just thinks this way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great , tough Book, not for beginners or Non C++ programmers
Mixed opinions about the book. The author never claims that beginners can easily understand nor he warrants that you need not know C++. It may take sevaral months or years to read this book. If you say you know this book for 100%, you are only few steps away from Booch's level. His process is great if we have the time, patience and comfort to follow it and apply it. You should have some prior knowledge of OO to understand Booch's language. Of course C++ basics. Though the chapter on Booch Notaion is dated, you still need to read it to follow the remaining chapters. But if you have read UML, booch notation is not tough to understand. I wish he re-writes with additional Java examples and gives some business applications like banking/insurance examples rather than Gardening Sensors and Heaters, and also drop notations chapter and assume that readers know UML. It will be great if he guides us how his process fits into the internet era within tons of frameworks/patternsaround.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic well worth the read
This is a very good book on the subjects of OOA/OOD. It emphasizes concepts and has a strong academic flavor, which I appreciate "accidentally." Although the particular C++ programming language is not the focus, you need to know a least some C++ to understand the example code snippets, which helps you grasp the concepts.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth a penny
I'm a mechatronics engineer with no formal training in software design. I bought this book to learn the basics of software design for a major project. I regret every penny I spent.
1-0 out of 5 stars Boring and Obvious
This book touches on some nice topics but if fails to state anything more then the obvious for anyone that knows anything about OO and the unified process.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - if you willing to put in a ton of effort
The "Unified Software Development Process" is still probably the best book yet on software process. Yes, it's difficult to read and it's not an introduction by any means (it reads like a textbook). but, if you're willing to put in the time and effort, what you'll get out of it is i think is worth it. I often had to go over a page many times to understand exactly what they saying, and routinely ended up with a headache. but, I really think it pays off.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading tutorial on UML 2.0
I picked up this book as a way to familiarize myself with the changes to UML in UML 2.0, which are extensive, as I found the OMG specification nearly impenetrable. I had liked the first edition, though I too felt Fowler's Distilled was a much better intro to give to students and engineers learning UML for the first time. This edition, though, does not meet expectations. The typos and bad references throughout are bad enough. Join that with a complete lack of real-world design examples, poor organization, and poor design. Why a chapter on State Machines and a separate chapter on State Diagrams that repeats a lot of the earlier chapter? The blue cross references make it clear that the book is spaghetti design at its worst. Check out the table of contents, you won't know where to look for your favorite diagrams; check out the index, and you won't be able to find the definition of the concept you just can't quite remember. The glossary is useful, as the UML 2.0 spec dispensed with a glossary, making it even more impenetrable. On the other hand, the authors make no attempt to call out the new UML 2.0 features, which would have made my day. What I find most unforgivable, though, is the authors' inability to present the new UML as it really is: the book is seriously misleading in many ways for learning UML 2.0. My biggest peeve is the way they treat the new and highly useful composite structure diagrams. In the list of diagrams, they don't even mention it, calling it by the name of a different diagram, the "Component Diagram", which they feel is the same thing. They then separate the discussion of composite classes and components, making it seem as though they're totally unrelated. They fail to mention quite a few of the new UML features (the X navigation adornments that make non-navigability explicit, for example, which is critical to code generation, or the fact that you can have multiple stereotypes associated with model elements. In their defense, the UML standard isn't very clear on these diagram types, but this is a practical tutorial that should take practice into account. There are constant references to the Reference Guide for more advanced features; these are mostly the UML 2.0 features that they didn't feel were important enough to include in the comprehensive tutorial. The appendix on UML notation simply ignores many UML 2.0 notations. I can't help but feel shortchanged.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hi Mr. Book Disposal
Start reading Chapter 1 of this book for even just the first few pages, and for various topics, it will say to go to future Chapters. If you take a look at those future chapters, there will be notes on the side telling you to go back to Chapter 1 or to other chapters. You can run into infinite loops or dead ends not really picking up anything. It is possible to maybe find what you were looking for, or find that the explanation for it is just not sufficient.
3-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book for UML learning

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reference for all projects
Like all dynamic languages, the Unified Modeling Language (UML) is growing more complex over time. While it is true that for most developers, this means that you will regularly use a smaller percentage of the language, the actual percentage will vary from person to person and from day to day. Therefore, no abridged UML manual could possibly be adequate. Written by the three creators of the UML, this manual is clearly definitive and one that all developers should have at extended arms reach. Designed to cover the changes in the recently released UML 2.0, which were significant, a CD with the full text in Adobe PDF form with hotlinks to the definitions of the key terms is also included.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and organized
This isn't something that I would sit down and read just for fun, but it is well written and organized, which makes it easy to use. The bulk of the book is in the dictionary of terms which is organized alphabetically. Each one is described using both a text definition and a notational graphic, and often an example. There is a section on the different types of views at the front of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tip Top for the dedicated UML modeler

5-0 out of 5 stars This book scores high
The subject of Object-Oriented Analysis and Design is vast. This book can be thought of as a distilled dispenser of Unified Modeling Language (UML).I interviewed Martin Fowler for an article in CoDe Magazine. Mr. Fowler's credentials are impressive:A regular speaker at object technology conferences including OOPSLA, Software Development, and ECOOP.Fowler is also the author of the Analysis Patterns, Refactoring, and Planning Extreme Programming. In this book, Fowler presents a brief overview of UML and does it quite well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Definitive Practical Guide
After Grady Booch, James Rumbaugh, Stephen Mellor and GOF, Martin Fowler is pretty much one of the fore-fathers of Object Oriented design and analysis. He is one of the initial torch bearers of the discipline we know as refactoring. Martin Fowler is the author of several renowned books on analysis and design namely "Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture", "Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code", "Planning Extreme Programming" and "Analysis Patterns: Reusable Object Models"

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
I had no hesitation to give 5 stars here. The book is really very good. Honestly, what do you expect with such a book ? To learn valable advices, to understand them, and to have fun while reading. Such a book exists : this one ! How many time I asked to myself "Yes ! What a good idea ... and so simple" or "Of course ! That's it". I really read it like a novel. You can bring it with you for your hollidays (like me), without the feeling to get boring with professional stuff !

5-0 out of 5 stars Fly On The Wall
I swear that Booch was spying on several of the so called"projects" that I was a developer on.It is simply amazing to mehow many times the so-called "Harvard School of Business"techniques are used to manage an OO project!I have learned through theschool of hard knocks what Booch has written about in this book (wish I haddiscovered it sooner, a couple of pointy haired bosses could have usedit!).Anyway, Booch breaks OO management into seven chapters:FirstPrinciples, Products and Process, The Macro Process, The Micro Process, TheDevelopment Team, Management and Planning, and Special Topics.Iespecially found interesting his descriptions on how NOT to run an OOproject (oh, and he gives plenty of examples on HOW to run one too!). Booch covers OOA, artifacts, OOD, methodolgies (a biggy with me even on aone person project), evolution (gosh! who would have thought you could havecyclical development???).Identification of classes, objects, symantecs, relationships, etc.He then tackles the team environment:roles andresponsibilities (especially the manager's responsibilities!), resourceallocation, and tools (this book is not a plug for Rational Rose BTW). Finally:managing risk, planning and scheduling, staffing, costing (atough one), Quality Assurance (this is not testing!), and he talks someabout projects in crisis and what to do.The last chapter is kind of acatch-all containing:User-centric, Data-centric, and Computation-centricsystems discussions, along with Distributed, Legacy, InformationManagement, and Real Time Systems. The appendicies contain: a summary ofrecommended practices (for those wanting to create a methodology), andrules of thumb. There is a great index, bibliography and glossary to tieup the package nicely.Booch has a terrific writing style presenting whatwould normally be a dry subject!Definitely for the computer ProjectManager's shelf!

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning Defective Software
This package comes with a reference manual and a computer based training course. The training software is defective. The setup program has remnants of the W95.CIH virus and won't install if you are running a virus checker. If you manage to get the product installed, you may find it doesn't work. The course is implemented as a set of html pages that aren't correctly linked so you'll receive many page not found errors as you click through the material. A total rip-off in my opinion.

1-0 out of 5 stars The gospel according to ada
I am trying to do some quick refresher reading on ada for a job interview and this book has been sitting around unread since i went on an ada course 5 or so years ago. It would be less painful to swallow this book whole and pass it out the other end in the same state than read it. Its riddled with profound opinions on the philosophy behind the language and i skipped the first 4 chapters as irrelevant rubbish but still have the rest padded out excessively with this stuff instead of getting down to the actual language. I think I should have read the book I got back in 1983 written by the course lecturer instead even though it was published before the language was finalised
