The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Tags that are being phased out are labeled "deprecated"--current browsers can still handle them, but if you want your site to keep up with future browsers, not to mention conform to accessibility requirements, you will want to get on top of XHTML.Read more

Far and away the best book for everyone!
This is simply the best HTML and CSS book.It has basically everything you need to know, with easy-to-find, easy-to-understand, and concise descriptions.It it not "web for dummies," rather, it is a very sophisticated and realistic approach to HTML and CSS, without a lot of hype or self-promotion.If you want to hear people wax poetical about the "EM" unit, you can get the book by Lie & Bos, but I think Castro's book is far more useful.She gives links to many web sites to help with more advanced stuff (Javascript, etc.), which is nice, but the book itself is incredibly comprehensive.And the layout of the book is a model for all instructional texts.A winner!

For Reference or for learning
Elizabeth Castro has been writing Visual Quickstart Guides to HTML and web design in an easy to understand manner. Now she provides resources for those who would be interested in web design that will create sites that are usable for years to come. Since I first picked up the fourth edition of this book, I have been hooked on the series, because its explanations are written on a level for the average person. The organization allows the reader to move at their own pace and easily refer back to topics that they want to refresh.
Coding
This book was a real help to me when I first became addicted to coding. The pictures are quite helpful, or at least more helpful than long explanations, and Elizabeth Castro is a fabulous writer. I learned so much that I went on to learn many other programming and coding languages with ease. You don't need to have any experience to use this book, it explains everything. Visual QuickStart Guide's are the best type in the market, cheap and easy to understand. So if you are itching to learn another computer language, I suggest checking them out! ... Read more

Editor needed
Admittedly, I'm only up to the second chapter in this book, but it's clear that Castro needed a better editor.She relies on a frustrating "Type this, then we'll come back to it later" approach (example: naming your DTD, then finding out four pages later HOW to apply that information).Disappointing as her XHTML + CSS and Flash MX books were much tighter in execution.

Good overall XML review, but it has gaps
This book does cram a whole lot of information into a tiny space.I will say that, if you are interested in getting started with XML, the book tries to include all the "pieces" you need - like not just XML code, but DTDs and XSLT, etc.

All you need to know to blog using Blogger
I have been writing on my blog using Blogger since 2002, so I am very familiar with almost all the options it provides you with to get your word out there in the blogosphere. Yet, I was able to pick up numerous new things when I read this book by Elizabeth Castro. It goes from the very basics that you'd need in order to get off the ground, all the way to incorporating audio into your blog, blogging via e-mail/telephone, customizing your blog, hosting it yourself and much, much more. It's incredible the amount of useful information that the author was able to pack in a little over 100 pages.

Creating A Web Page with HTML
Well written, well illistrated. Even as new to html as I am it is an easy step by step guide to building a web page that even I can do.

A short, fun way to get a web page done
This book is definitely for beginners, but then that's the whole point. The author starts out with the very basics showing you how to design a web page, telling you how you're going to do it and then taking you through all the steps one-by-one. There's a brief introduction to html and using css and then she jumps right in getting you to create a wep page.

Could have done a lot better!
Regret shelling out my hard-earned-buck for this book. Another example of the "hit or miss" affair with Amazon. Too bad it didn't have "adequate" reviews back then when I purchased it. Oh well!

A must for learning Perl
"Perl and CGI for the World Wide Web" is well organized, well written, and easy to understand. Elizabeth Castro clearly puts great care into communicating. She succeeds.

Castro iPhoto 5
Excellant book for beginners.Takes you through the process step by step with exercises. A bonus: the book is illustrated with nice photos of some general interest.

Very useful not only for beginners!
While most of the near-150 pages are filled with screenshots accompanied by concise explanations set in bigger-than-usual type, Castro's coverage of iPhoto still comprises far more detail and facts than I had expected given the common "introductory"-type positioning of this title.

Birds Friend or foe
In the movie "The birds" I found that it was interesting to the point to where you did not know what the birds would do next, or who was going to be there next victim.The actors who played the characters (Rod Taylor as Mitch Brenner, Tippi Hendren as Melanie Daniels and Jessica Tandy as Lydia Brenner and many more) did a fine job of acting for their time, however if the movie were based in today's time they would probably not have been as well recognized for this particular movie.

Excellent starter; useful reference into intermediate level
This is a great book for the intermediate to well-seasoned HTML coder who is looking to explore server-side scripting.Experience with regular programming helps to pick up the language even more quickly, although it is certainly not necessary.Having been introduced to the many uses of Perl/CGI after installing and using several scripts like those on the CGI Resource Index (http://www.cgi-resources.com), I was well aware of the practicality of what I was learning (after reading to chapter 3, I began writing Perl with a purpose, using the book only as a reference).I'm now very comfortable with the language, and have moved on to more advanced projects (and, consequently, more advanced resources).I HIGHLY recommend this book, as well as others in the Visual Quickstart series (especially those written by Elizabeth Castro). ... Excellent value, well-structured, easy reference..
After looking for a book on Communicator I was impressed by thepresentation and especially the price of this one. After just aboutone-third through, I learned a fist-full of better ways to do things, andit confirms my initial instinct that this was a good buy, even though I'vebeen using Navigator and now Communicator since version 2. I like thestructure and approach taken; there are good references to other parts ofthe book, so there's not much repetition. The frequent groups of"Tips" are good and tons of illustrations back up the claim tobeing a Visual guide. Although I don't use NetCaster and I don't expect touse Conferencing, I'm looking forward to learning better ways to use mailand news from the rest of the book. ... Read more

Excellent textbook as it has clear step-by-step examples
Ideal for beginners and students in a classroom setting. I use this book in teaching an International Marketing using the Internet course http://nsccux.sccd.ctc.edu/~jleonard For students who have never used the Internet, it offers step-by-step examples of what to click on, where to enter information, and what will be seen. A lot of screen shots. Very good for exercises. It does not spend time on the history, gopher, archie, veronica and other OBSOLETE ways to use the Internet. Very specific for Netscape 2.0 (there is also a Netscape 3.0 version out) and even shows how to make simple web pages using Netscape Gold with the Netscape templates. "Bible" is apt...
I have to admit, from the outset, that I am not a Mac person. I am a PC tech trying to service one of the only Mac's I will probably work on this year. I have a copy of the Mac Bible. It is huge! That's not bad if it is useful. The problem I am having is finding what I need while I have to wade through the barrels of verbage that are useless to me. I finally had to resort to scouring the Web to find my answers. I guess I'm used to the more direct, almost cookbook approach to troubleshooting and setup. To be fair, and thats why I gave the book two stars instead of one, I realize that the different chapters are written by different authors, so the content and style will vary. Unfortunately for methe sections I needed were written by authors I would rather not consult in the future.

its a good book, if you are reading this review, skip the first chapter. I wish it had information of the newer OS like OS X. I learn many simple things about Macs I had no idea. This is THE BEST Mac book!
I got my first Mac ever about a year and a half ago, being a PC person before that. Being a book fanatic, I used this Mac purchase as an excuse to go out and buy lots of Mac books! The Mac Bible was one of the first I bought. It still remains the book I consult most often.Read more
