I have read the Process and Inspiration sections thus far and Curtis gives helpful advice in how to succeed in media design.

A must-read for aspiring designers
As a design student, I was recommended to read this book by numerous friends of mine who have graduated from the program. I am a second-year student without a lot of real-world design experience, and reading this book still hit very close to home.

It's an okay read
This is a very lightweight read regarding the process of production.It's more of a personal journal, blog-style account than anything substantial a reader can learn from.However, it does have merit in that respect. So, if you're a newbie and want to get your feet wet, this may be a book you'd like to read to get yourself into those baby steps.
Hillman should get an Oscar.
For anyone wanting to create a short film, web or otherwise, this book is a great starting point. Curtis takes you through some of his works and offers insights into projects - success and not so successful. The candid approach to the work runs more like a one man show of dialogue. Do not expect a How To format. Curtis is all about letting you in on his experiences.
Ver good read
This is a very good book. I didn't think too highly of Hillman before this book, and was under the impression that he was sort of a hack, and happened to be in the right place at the right time for much of his design career.

Slick, but Not for Beginners.
I bought this book hoping it will help me to learn Flash 5.From a beginner perspective this book is very lacking and the examples are missing some necessary steps.Its certainly a nicely designed book but gives you no sense in what to expect from it.I expected the examples to be written in such a way that anyone can do it as long as the instructions are followed... and that didn't happen.Disappointed.

great inspiration, but outdated content
I give this a strong four because it is teaching me how and why to animate...and for me that's more valuable, but some of the examples are outdated. You're probably better off with a FlashMX book at this point.

overdesigned
I wouldn't listen to these guys when it comes to design. It's actually hard to read and find information because of their 'style'. And it doesn't look cool either. A lot of hot air, little substance. ... Read more

Terrible layout / typography
This book might have useful information about using flash in web design but the layout and typography is so terrible that I can't really use it as a reference.

Practical, hands-on learning that provides insight
Hillman Curtis does not read like a textbook, but I learned as though it were. He explains the dynamic effect of Flash web design so I can make a statement on the web without ever using a word (if necessary). Each chapter has a step-by-step explanation of not only the "how to" but the "why" as well. There are also downloads (from his site) of the chapter example files; the combination is like having a private tutor. As a beginning Flash user, this is a basic text. I'll be using it as a reference for a long time.

Slightly overrated.
Don't fall for the hype on this one.I love Hillman, and find him to be inspirational, but the book is less than it has been made to seem. ... Read more
