3-0 out of 5 stars Good for reference, not for studying.
This book covers most of topic you may need. So, you can use it as a reference on ASP3. But it is not for beginner or for studying from a ground. It is quite hard-to-read, not explained in-depth, and it made me quite ???.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need to know ASP?Get this book.
A bit outdated now with .Net, but I still get this ol' book out once in a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book for classical ASP
Obsolete??? Hardly. As I write this review, new Web page technologies are being matured: jsp, php, chm (yech).New models are being matured: Servlets, STRUTS, .NET. Classical ASP 3.0 is still quick, fast and necessary for small to medium businesses, even enterprise-level webpages. There's no better book to learn all the standards, applications, basics, and advanced capabilities of ASP than THIS book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft MVP 2005 - Visual C# recommended
There are numerous upgrades between .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0.Thankfully, this book focuses strictly on ADO.NET and how System.Xml is utilized with it.Not only do you learn about new capabilities, the authors do a good job of comparing new techniques/capabilities with those from .NET 1.1.
5-0 out of 5 stars For Experts or people who want to become an Expert
This book is a worthy companion to Bob Beauchemin et al's First Look. And that is saying a lot.
4-0 out of 5 stars deep integration of XML into ADO
This book shows how Microsoft supports XML as one of the core standards for interacting with its SQL Server database and with its entire .NET framework. The book divides into two parts. The first deals with pure ADO.NET improvements. Many of these. Perhaps the most tangible of which can lead to you writing less code, and hence [hopefully] more robust code.

4-0 out of 5 stars a rich feature set for UI design
This recent book by Homer and Sussman gives a pretty comprehensive exposition of ASP.NET version 2.0. You might compare it to another recent text, "ASP.NET 2.0 Unleashed" by Walther. That book chose to give its examples in Visual Basic. Whereas Homer and Sussman provide theirs in C#. In terms of C# knowledge, you need a general acquaintance with its syntax, to easily follow this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars an authoritative, informative, and concise introduction to ASP.NET

1-0 out of 5 stars A good book to waste your time and energy.
If you are looking for a book that just dumps in a lot of spaghetti uncoordinated meaningless text where you have to brake your head every other paragraph to find out what the authors intended to say, then this book is for you. I am going to list the points I don't like about this book:
5-0 out of 5 stars Most Strategic ASP.NET Book Going!
Given some initial hurdles, I fervently believe that Alex Homer's (plus 5 other authors) "Professional ASP.NET 1.1" is the most strategic book going, to really learn to program in ASP.NET.Or, from my life, it was the best thing I found after 3 years and more than $1000 worth of .NET-programming books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Book if you are serious about getting ASP .NET knowledge
If you are really serious about getting ASP .NET knowledge and you are in real development environment where you need in depth knowledge of ASP .NET paradigm and controls, then this is the book for you. What I can't find at other places, this books describes it beautifully and clearly. I am very happy to get this book and I really enjoy reading it. I highly recommend this book for all types of developers, beginner, intermediate or advanced. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best reference for ASP.Net Beginners
Great combination and perfect fit of beginning book and tool: ASP.Net Web Matrix. Excellent examples and basic ASP.Net concepts explanation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, good examples
This book is a not bad introduction to ASP.NET. The reason I purchased it is I really needed to master Web Matrix ASAP and Mr. Sussman's book was quite helpful in accomplishing that goal. Of course, it is better to begin with Visual Studio since Web Matrix is somewhat limited resemblance of Visual Studuo but Web Matrix has something nobody could resist - it is free. 4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, good examples

1-0 out of 5 stars Errors, Errors, Errors...
This book has too many errors. There is nothing more frustrating than to follow the steps outlined and find out it does not work because they did not Q&A the examples.
2-0 out of 5 stars not helpful
it has an already made site which you study, but it does not go step by step, it just shows pieces of how this was done, and if you want yours to differ a little, you find no help to do so. Totaly annessecery book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Starting Tutorial and CD includes the Software
ASP.NET has created a drag-and-drop environment to enable the non-programmer to design web pages of surprising complexity without having to learn very much programming at all. While this approach will probably not last forever as your site gets more complex, it is a fair way to get started. At least you can get on line quickly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dated...already?
First of all, anyone interested in this book should turn to the MSDN library for the latest info and samples. The problem with this book is that it's _already_ outdated in terms of the features that will be included (and not included) with .Net 2.0.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great into to ASP.NET
If you are an ASP veteran and want to get quickly up to speed with ASP.NET, this is your book. The differences between the two are highlighted often and you'll be up and running with ASP.NET in no time.If you're looking for an ASP.NET reference, you'll be disappointed. This book is not a reference work. For that see the VS.NET help or get another book to compliment this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars With specific troubleshooting problems to watch out for
The collaborative effort of software development experts Alex Homer, Dave Sussman, and Rob Howard, A First Look At ASP.NET v. 2.0 is a methodical handbook, reference, and self-teaching aid for the Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 Web development platform. 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding value for the intermediate designer
If you are in the market for a book that clearly, concisely, and, oft-times, humorously describes the sometimes daunting task of developing ASP.NET-based websites - your search may be over.
5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality and Clearly Explained
Mr. Homer has produced that rarity in a serious programming book, quality with clarity. The examples individually and as a whole are all very well done, and any ASP.NET programmer from intermediate level up will find something useful in here. One other note, I had a specific question and e-mailed Mr. Homer, and his response was quick, cordial, and solved my problem on the first try.....many software companies should do so well.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
Not only is it below average in cost, it is by far the best ASP book I have ever seen. Every topic has a VBScript and JScript example. It is much more than a reference manual. This is the way EVERY computer language book should be written.

4-0 out of 5 stars great reference if you already know basic ASP
I use this book all the time. In fact, so much that I hardly ever put it back on my bookshelf. It is a great reference for anyone who basically knows ASP but needs to occasionally look up how some part of how ASP works. I was self-taught ASP, and just learned how to do different things as I needed them. This book's biggest strength is that it shows you ASP in the big picture of the object model, which I never really grasped until I got this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Much More Than Just an ASP Reference
Wrox is selling itself short on this one.Not only is it a great reference for ASP (lots of good examples and explanations), there are also several equally good chapters on ADO, CDO, XML, XLST, ADSI, MSMQ and Transactions.I've used it as a reference for these other topics as much or more than I've used it as an ASP reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars vbScript is for IE5
The Code works the examples are easy to follow and the title of the book says IE5 Dynamic HTML which means that it has to work with vbscript. this is another excellent Wrox book

2-0 out of 5 stars examples use VBScript, not Javascript
Although the subject matter is well covered, all the code examples that I saw are written in VBScript. That renders the book effectively useless if you code your client side script in javascript (which is the industry standard).5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
Although web browsers have evolved beyond IE5, this is still a great book. It is well organized and easily referenced. I keep it handy for the quick look up need without having to go into the MSDN library. There is a heavy emphasis on VBScript. It is worth the investment. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK reference.
This could have been a much better book.It needed more examples (sample HTML code). It is also really out of date now, as you might suspect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great and Quick Reference to HTML
This is not a thick book with everything you want or don't want of HTML. If you want to build or modify your personal web site, or working on a e-commerce site but need some quick reference, or refresh your memory, this is a very handy book to help you to get the things down easier than hold the thick one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expected more of this book...
Well, after buying the Instant Javascript book from Wrox, I was hoping to expect the same type of help from this book. And I do have to say I was a bit dissapointed by it.Apparently, they took too much time explaining and going into worthless subjects, instead of grinding the meat with real world examples, usefull tips and tricks, and hopefully some new light on HTML (something that most of the newer WYSIWYG editors don't already do).So, as I have shown, this is not a book you might want to buy for really advanced proyects, or higher learning. If you're a newbie looking to get an understanding at HTML, then this is a book for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hands On Training
Hands-on, example-based training for Microsoft .NET is offered in this book. It discusses .NET's effectiveness in a distributed environment with n-tier architecture, including different types of clients (rich clients and .NET clients), different types of browsers (including Wireless Markup Language (WML) and browsers for wireless devices), a middle tier (executing the business logic), and different types of data sources (databases from different vendors, data streams, and Extensible Markup Language (XML)). The book will be useful for any .NET developer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete
I have to say that this book IS complete about the XML for IE5 subject.Of course, this a Programmer's Reference so it's not a book to learn and it's obviously IE5 specific. If you can live with those constraint andyou are looking to do get the best out of IE, take this book and you willhave all required information.4-0 out of 5 stars Appetitizing XML/IE5 cookbook, and an essential reference
This is another example of the quality (most) Wrox publishings have. The book includes some very good and essential reference to the most useful XML technologies including core XML, XSL(XSLT), Schemas&DTD's, the MS-XMLDocument Object Model (DOM), ActiveX Data Objects and lots of otherstuff.3-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've found, but there's room for improvement.
The new XML features in IE5 are exciting, and we're starting to use XML to publish complicated db data on the web. This book got me up and running, so I've gotten a lot of use out of it.But my feeling is that no one hasreally figured out how to explain XML very well, and this book, like all ofthe other XML books I've read, seemed a little muddled and difficult toread. The first four chapters of the book are devoted to XML theory anddescriptions of the various technologies MS uses, and I found them a littleconfusing, despite the fact that I was already running some of theXML-Apache code. For me, though, the bottom line is that the technology isso useful and exciting that it's worth expending a little extra effort topick it up.If someone knows of a better book, email me and let me know. But for now, as far as I know this is an imperfect book that's the best wayto learn an important new technology. For that reason, I recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book to get to learn ASP
Most ASP developers agree that if you're going to buy just one book to learn ASP, then this is the book to get. I agree. Based on other readers recommendations, I bought this book to learn the topic, read it from cover to cover, and afterwards felt very comfortable when handling any ASP-related task. However, be prepared. This book is a slow 1000+ page read, densely packed with both information and small type.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible ASP Reference
This book has carried me now for two years.I don't need some end all be all bible - MSDN keeps updates on specific issues I have. This is a great ASP reference for the "working" programmer who just needs to see an example of "how it's done".Chalked full of sample code that WORKS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Let me be honest, I hate programming, I don't like anything to do with the web, and the internet, but hey, it's good money right? and besides it's nice when you can add 'programming experience' to your resume. So I bought this book, at first it doesn't look too anything, but when I began reading I realized that the reason I hated it so much had to do with the fact that I didn't understand anything there, this books got me started and now I am an advanced programmer. I would like to recommend any book from Wrox publishing, it's all good! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of pages, too little useful content
The first thing you'll notice is that the book is mainly concentrated using vb.net.That is fine, but looking at the code as a c++, c#, java programmer just begins to drive me nuts.If you want the c# examples, you have to download them.If you like to write the code to help you learn, this book is not for you.Chapters 5 and 6 are almost wholly useless as far as examples go, but a decent read for understanding how asp.net works. The web services and mobile controls were nice. The datastore chapters were good for understanding asp.net.I would have expected to see more OO design in the professional book.If you have an asp.net book already, this won't bring many new revelations to you.If you are looking for a single asp.net book, this is a decent one to have.If you are beginning asp.net, this book is not for you, as the examples just aren't concise or clear enough.3-0 out of 5 stars You'd think it would be more help
I got this when it was basically the only book out there.Since then, whenever I have an ASP.NET problem I open this book, search vainly through the 1300 pages for coherent help, then give up and go to google groups. With all that writing you'd think that I would occasionally find my answers in there...

1-0 out of 5 stars Disjointed [stuff]
This book is 1300 pages of [stuff]. Its written by about 10 people who obviously didn't look at each others segments because they repeat the same stuff over and over.If they took out all the information that was repeated throughout the book it would be about 300 pages. I was better served by the MSDN documentation. Wrox used to have a good reputation for solid books but it seems like quantity over quality is what they are after. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for Programmers to implement XML in ASP
Excellent! for ones who are pro to ASP and need to intergrate XML with ASP! A must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for Programmers to implement XML in ASP
This is definitely a good book for developers having good knowledge of ASP and XML and how to integrate XML in ASP. I just loved this book. People who say they don't like it, they have not read the book I am sure. Its sure worth the money!

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad examples, choppy, dated and not for beginners
I'm a big fan of the WROX publications (for ASP in particular), but this book was a disappointment. The writing was choppy - as you might expect from a book with 14 guys on the cover. The examples were cryptic and raise more questions than they answer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book Microsoft should have shipped with ADO
I cannot recommend this book enough. It is actually a joy to read - a reference book - imagine that! It contains everything I needed/wanted to know plus a whole lot more. It is the book that Microsoft should have shipped as their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Reference at Your Side
As the title suggests, it is a reference to the features in ADO, but the authors have done a good job of presenting a primer of ADO's more useful features. I was disoriented at first by how reference material was weaved together with extended textual explanations of concepts, but the format works. I ended up reading most of the book cover to cover rather than just looking up topics that interested me. And an extensive index goes a long way in making the material accessible for reference. Most of the code snippets are in VB or VBScript, but the authors used pseudocode a lot, so developers using any language will find the material helpful.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on ADO
I used this book as an mean for learning ADO about one year a go. It works great as introduction as for advanced users. It does a very good job as a reference but as learning tool too. Same comments for ADO 2.5 Programer's referenece. ... Read more

Editorial Review

ASP (Active Server Pages) is a Microsoft technology that provides a framework for developers to construct dynamic Web pages. These pages can interact with custom-built components or databases to produce solid and interesting Internet/intranet sites and Web-based applications. 4-0 out of 5 stars It's a reference - with some decent background info.
I've read Beginning ASP 2.0 and Professional ASP 2.0 . . . and I found this book a good quick review on those subjects I'm rusty on.It's nice to have the information available in a smaller book that I can carry with mefrom job to job (the appendix is thorough and well organized). This is nota practical "first book" if you are serious about learning how tocode ASP.If you're a manager and want some background the first fewchapters are targeted for you.If you're a programmer, you won't developany serious applications with this book as your guide. But, if you forgothow to deal with cookies or can't remember the exact syntax for sendingmail with CDONTS - then buy this books. It's portable.4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference!
The concepts introduced in this book are very clear and easy to understand. The performance chapter needs more reference

2-0 out of 5 stars You won't learn more than 1 hour reading
This book is clear and straightforward. Unfortunately, you won't learn much from it, for the examples are very simple and it never goes very deep inside programming. This definitely is a book for managers who want to getthe feeling about a technology without having to write any code. ... Read more
