5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Java
It helps to have a little programming experience under your belt. That having been said, this book provides a comprehensive, and readable introduction to Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
I just wanted to increase the rating of the book from the 3.5 stars it has.I disagree with the majority of complaints people had earlier on.This book is very good, and very friendly. It is broken into days, and each new day is a new section which builds upon previous days while improving upon the information you need to know.It repeats some information as you progress thru the 21 sections, but in a clever way.It may be a bit hard for a novice programmer, but programming is not an easy task to begin with. For someone coming from a background in C/C++ or .NET, you can probably get thru half of the book in a week.Overall, this book is very well designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start
This is a great book for anyone looking to start Java.

Editorial Review

A great book for beginning programmers who want to learn Perl. Filled with concrete examples and, yes, by using this book you will be able to write good Perl code on your own in 21 days. But no perlson is an island, and there is no single book that covers Perl completely, so we recommend that you also get Programming Perl, which is better at providing the language specifications, and, in fact, was written by the author of Perl. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - clear and easy to read
I find myself using this book as a refernce almost every day.It is well written and easy to follow.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't even finished the book and I am already feeling like a perl programmer
I bought this book after trying to learn Perl through another book (Perl for Bioinformatics). This book is definitely a better introduction to Perl than any other book I've seen. It is clear and concise enough and although it might be hard to finish it in 21 days, you can start coding your own scripts much before the end of the book. I am still on chapter 11 and I can program most of what I need with it (i.e parsers and simple bioinformatics applications). I recognize that there are a few typos on the book but if even Knuth's Art of Computer Programming have them why shouldn't Lemay's Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days do the same?
4-0 out of 5 stars Above Average Introduction
Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days by Laura Lemay is sufficient for the beginner wanting to learn Perl, be it on Windows or a UNIX-based operating system. If Perl is your first programming language, then this book is a fairly good book to choose as a starting point. It teaches the basics of programming in Perl and moves quickly from that point onward.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginner's Reference
I have two beginning Java books, Joyce Farrel's "Java Programming: 2nd Edition" and "Teach Yourself Java in 21 Days"of the two, this book is the easier to understand. However, it doesn't push the reader to experiment with code and push themselves like the first title I mentioned does.2-0 out of 5 stars Teach yourself java in 21 YEARS
This book never comes close to presenting istself as a stand alone subject for learning java. Especially not in 21 days or 100 days, I would challange if it could be done in a year. This book is poorly written with enormous amount of errors , not just in the text but in the program listing themselves. I doubt if this book was proof read or even if any of the programs where written and carried out to the extreme to see if they really worked. While this book covers a lot of topics there are poor to no examples on any of the material that is covered.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference tool, perhaps not a primary learning tool
I am presently using this book as a recommended text in an HTML college class. It is not the primary text, but I am CONSTANTLY referring to it because it is so thorough.I recommend it for anyone who is SERIOUS aboutlearning HTML in depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book
This book is fantastic for the individual who wants to learn HTML quickly.Although it does not delve into the advanced topics too far, it is a good starting point.Lemay's style is straight forward and will have you writing web pages in no time. With this book and CGI 101/102 you could be designing and programming for the web in a basic capacity in a week, but by no means stop there!

4-0 out of 5 stars Your patience will pay off...
I believe most people will learn a lot from this book. It is informative, provides good examples, and it actually teaches you the basics of Java programming with both Java Applications and Java Applets. The book puts an emphasize on Graphics programming, including the AWT classes, and Swing (new in Java 2). The book is extensive and will test your patience, specially if you are new to programming, but it will most definitely pay off in the end.4-0 out of 5 stars great book for non OOP programmer like me ...
I've read most of the chapters of this book, and the examples, esp. the jabberwocky, made me understand the concepts of OOP. The authors explains the details in some funny way, and although sometime I had to re-read some parts of the previous chapters, I am grateful for the authors' style of writing, so I am now more interested than ever to finish the book and read some other references. I bought another great book, "Java 2: How to Program" by Deitel a few months back , but after comparing the two books, I decided to read SAMS first because of OOP. Next stop is Deitel's book , then maybe surf the net for other references. Great buy !

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
I found this book to be extremely helpful.I'm a rookie at web development and after being only half way through this book I feel like an expert(well almost). If you are looking for a good book that teaches you from scratch with step by step examples, stop searching. This is the book you want. The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because some of the graphics used in the book, I can't find them on the CD.However there are a lot of other ones on the CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars First rate entry level HTML primer
Laura Lemay has become one of the premier writers of web development texts, and this book is a good example. Many entry level texts get you started using code that has been depricated by the W3C, knowing full well that future browsers may not support the coding methods they are teaching.Laura does an excellent job of introducing newcomers to the "art" of web development while at the same time, prepares them for impending changes in the coding standards. The basics are well covered with easy to understand examples.Advanced techniques are introduced in such a way as not to confuse the novice. While the book does not come with a CD rom with sample code, most books this size are considerably more expensive. In my opinion, the trade off was well worth it.This book is an absolute must have for the novice who is serious about learning HTML.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was impressed..
This is quite a thick book which covers a lot, and it's a good introduction to a lot of subjects, such as HTML, Javascript, style-sheets, forms, dynamic HTML, and more. You won't get full coverage on all these topics, though. If you're creatingyour own site, you will probably want a bigger reference that covers everything. But as an introduction to these topics, this book is excellent.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good book, bad service
The book itself is well written, and I'm learning a lot from it. HOWEVER, the selling-point for me was, as advertised inside the back cover, the companion site with source code and graphics used in the examples in the book. Some competitors' books have a CD-ROM included, but I chose this one figuring accessing a Web site would be just as easy. Well, the Web site does not exist. Bringing this to the publisher's attention was a waste of time. They were neither concerned, apologetic, or interested in making any kind of effort to accept responsibility or rectify the situation. Bad customer service.... I'm quite annoyed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginners: buy this book
If you want to learn HTML and XHTML this is the book to read. Some subjects are deeper covered than some others but this is the best guide for newbies and a very good reference for the advanced.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best HTML book - in 2002
I am a professional software developer. I've dabbled in HTML as part of my job, but in late 2001 decided to finally take the time to learn the latest HTML standards right. So I set out to find the best and most comprehensive HTML book there was. I considered the five most available and highly-rated ones: Laura Lemay's Teach Yourself (Professional Edition), The HTML Bible, the Wrox HTML book, Elizabeth's Visual QuickStart Guide, and Molly Holzschlag's Special Edition.Read more

The latest incarnation of this classic guide to learning HTML now comes as a complete starter kit. Along with the book, you get a CD-ROM featuring the author's recommended HTML editing tools, Web browsers, software, and information from related Sams books. Although the book's title refers to teaching yourself HTML 4 in a week, that idea assumes that Web-site development is your full-time job. Devoting just a few hours a day, however, you can work your way through all 14 regular chapters plus 4 more bonus chapters in about two weeks. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars May be the most well-written technical book I have ever read
Laura Lemay's no-nonsense writing style was a welcome change from the dry verbosity of most technical books. It is a great beginning book.I am a programmer but had no previous experience with HTML, and the only webexperience that I had was as a user.On a scale of 1 to 10, I would givethis book a 9.I would give it a 10, except that it failed to deliver onone, promised point:Setting Up Your Own Web Server. On Day 7 (page 369),it promises that you will be instructed on how to set up your own webserver on Day 8.This information is never given.I tried writing to thepublisher about this omission but was never even given the courtesy of areply. If you don't care about setting up your own personal web server, this book will tell you everything else you need to know.

3-0 out of 5 stars bugs? bugs! bugs!
I bought the book. I already work with basic html daily at my workplace. I entered the code of the first 5 lessons in BBedit and ran the BBedit editor. What a mess!! 5-0 out of 5 stars A book with a wild growth of sticky tabs sprouting from it
I keep this book handy at all times.I learned how to construct tables and frames, just from this book alone. The methodology is very conducive to learning. You start with the outside of your code, and work inward.Itis a great way to learn, because you are literally building your"code" and can see it take shape. This is essential whenlearning tables, because you need to be able to envision your whole table, and know what the parameters are going to be, before you startbuilding.1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible, not very helpful
I found that this book was terrible and didn't help at all with my web page coding. The CD had very few things that the book related to, and 90% of the book was dedicated to a simple table. Then the book did a "Quantam Leap" to extremely complicated CSS. Not worth the money! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give it NO stars, I would
I got this book hoping for a good introduction to Java; I got a garbage-y book and a useless CD-ROM.First of all, the version of the software on the CD does NOT work.I wasted hours trying to relate it to the softwaredescribed in the book; and it's not even the same thing!!!!If you want usto buy a full version of a compiler, FINE...but please stick to what's onthe CD, otherwise the whole damn thing is useless.I went out and got J++6.0 and the J++ Programmer's Guide (both from Microsoft) instead, and it isten million times better.Don't waste your money on this book; in thiscase, go with Microsoft.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book but Roaster? is unusable without purchasing it too
This would be a 5 star book had the version of Roaster provided been afull or at least usable version!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad, bad, bad!
Worthless, at least to a beginner. The code in the samples and on the disk don't match up, the code contradicts instructions given in the text, unexplained logical leaps are plentiful, and the copy editing is shameful considering these people are accepting money for this thing. Bad, bad, bad! Run, don't walk, as far away from this book as you can! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sam's Teach yourself Visual J++ in 21 days
Like most other books published by Sam's, Teach yourself Visual J++ in 21 days really lacks any learning value. Subjects are often incomplete, wordy or skip important explainations. In addition to it's lack of quality, this book has several mistypes or mistakes. I would not recommend this book evento an experienced OOP programmer wanting to get a grasp on J++.

1-0 out of 5 stars Even with an editor, it's full of errors
You would think, with an editor (Patrick Winters, who should keep his day job), that this book would have less than the usual number of errors and typos found in a computer book. Instead, it has just as many, if not more. How frustrating! O'Reilly and a few others do it right; why notSams?1-0 out of 5 stars sams teach yourself CGI in a week is very deceptive
RE:"Sams Teach Yourself CGI Programming in a week"clearly states on the back cover "takes you to the next step beyond simple HTML"Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous teaching book and reference guide.
This is an excellent guide for anybody who wants to learn HTML. Lemay does a wonderful job of thouroughly explaining every tag in HTML 3.2.The book does really live up to it's name, within a week I was comfortably writing web pages with links, images, tables, and frames.I highly reccomend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a terrific introduction and reference for HTML!
The title of this book says it all--you CAN teach yourself HTML in a week using Ms. Lemay's step-by-step process. She begins with basics that any computer-literate user can apply, and she progresses through everything an HTML novice needs to know to construct a well-thought-out web site!My first pass through her tutorial took me a little less than a week, and now I keep this book beside me while putting my sites together.I was a COMPLETE HTML NEWBIE when I picked up this book...one month later I'm designing web pages as a sideline! That alone should make you read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Learning HTML
This book is divided into days, each day incorporating two chapters. Day one explains what a web page is, how to access it, the different types of layout for your web pages, and gives you information about the different types of browsers. By the end of day one you should have an idea of what you want on your web page and how you want it organized. Day two explains some of the basic HTML tags and also explains the anchor tag for creating links. Day three teaches you about lists, other formatting tags such as bold type and explains about HTML editors. Day four teaches you about Netscape and Internet explorer extensions and how to create tables. Day five teaches you about using images, sound and video in your web documents. Day six explains the Do's and Don'ts when creating web documents and gives you some examples of what type of information you may want to include on your web pages. Day seven helps explain how to find a web server and what it does, how to test your pages and advertise your site. You will also learn about what cgi scripts are and when to use them. This book also includes a bonus day. On the bonus day you will learn about forms and image maps along with what is to come in HTML 3.0. This book is a good starting place for someone who wants to learn to write web pages quickly and with good style and all the extras. ... Read more
