5-0 out of 5 stars Most O'Reilly book are quality references.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend an O'Reilly book to a beginner, just learning, but for anyone with some experience, these are the preferred learning & reference tools.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The examples are not easy to follow and it does not give sufficient explanation. It is basically useless to me.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for those with a C++ background
My background is in C++ with some experience with Java and no experience with .NET.I didn't fully realize how similar C++ is to C# until I finished this book, and I think my money would have been better spent buying a book on .NET.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book
With only a few months of OO programming about 6 years ago, I needed a book to take me from the beginning again. This book delivered. I found I have needed to read some chapters several times to 'get it', particularly chapters 7 & 8. I like the way he writes an example and then steps you through it, breaking down the code into sections. It was easy to read and easy to refer back to. I still have a couple of chapters to review and I'll be looking for more of his books.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a programmer or novice programmer with little or no object-oriented programming experience? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Jesse Liberty and Brian MacDonald, have done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a primer on the C# 2005 language specifically, and object-oriented software development in general.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a beginner book! for novices!!
I am sorry but this book is not a novice or begiiner book on C#.

4-0 out of 5 stars Programming ASP.NET (3rd edition)
I was reading this book as a sequel to "Programming C#" by Jesse
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get you rolling
I haven't written many asp.net apps in the last 1.5 years having been pulled into other programming projects. I was recently assigned to a new project that is strictly asp.net.
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Are you a programmer or web developer who wants to build web applications using Microsoft's powerful new ASP.NET 2.0 platform? Well, you're in luck! Authors Jesse Liberty and Dan Hurwitz, have done an outstanding job of writing a 3rd edition of a book that will teach you all you need to know to build professional quality, interactive, robust data-driven web applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, but examples can be rather bland...
I've always been rather hesitant to read programming books with titles that imply a sacrifice of depth for gained ease in learning, but this book is a very well done and complete treatment of the fundamentals of the C++ language.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's in-your-face tech knoledge.
I found the information good, accurate, and intensely stuffed into the twenty one days. It's a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Second VB Book
I have been through many VB books including expensive college texts.I immediately found this to be the best one.I picked it up at a Borders (oops...) because I was sick of ordering books online and not liking them when I finally got them in the mail. After I read the first chapter in the book store, I didn't want to wait to get started so I paid the $40.
1-0 out of 5 stars Jesse Liberty Fails to Update the Errata
After spending many hours trying to figure why the sample code didn't work, I found the answer buried on Jesse Liberty's message board.A fellow reader points out an error on Jan 21 and as of June 26 Jesse has yet to update his errata. Most tech books have a decent size errata and that is to be expected, but for an author to fail in his responsibility at the cost of many collective hours by his readers is extremely inconsiderate. This book is in my trash can at the moment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a complete transition to VB.Net
I absolutely love Jesse's books and articles. However, this book does not have a page dedicated to ADO.Net nor does Jesse talk about the debugging methods of VS 2005.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's an OK book
The people are right that this book could have been much less thick if it wasn't for the examples. Personally, I thought they were useful. Keep in mind that they have complete examples in both C# and VB.NET, and all that code wastes a lot of space.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Little Practical Information
Over 70 Percent of this book is code listings (much of it auto generated) that is available in the sample code. Why generate your own database when pubs and northwind provide adequate examples. If you want to learn how to design a database there are ample books out there that are quite good. Most of the examples have very little real world application. As an example of practical concise real world examples look at "Building Web Solutions" by Esposito. He provides four times the useful information in 350 pages that this book provides in 1200.Look elswhere if you want good insight and practical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete! Well Documented! Superb!
I found myself searching for a book that covered the TreeView control and others in great detail. I needed a book that would give detailed examples of how to use the advanced features of Windows Forms Controls and this was it. I use C# but appreciate the fact that both the VB.Net and C# codes is included as I never know if I will be asked to work on a VB.Net project. I have several other C# books that documented the basics of how to program C#, but this is the first that really showed me how to use the power of Win Forms to build a user friendly UI. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of C# 2005 (2.0) enhancements
I purchased this book to get prepped for 2.0 development. As usual , Jesse delivered with additional benifits. He is a great, clear speaking, author.I needed the facts and he delivered.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what it says it is
This is a very good "delta" book for moving to 2.0. It doesn't spend a lot of time with "object oriented programming began in 19..."-type gibberish. Instead it moves directly to some of the new features and talks to you like you know what your talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised
I just borrowed this book from the library as I'm trying to cut down and only buy true reference books. I didn't have a whole lot of expectations, but this book was exactly what the doctor ordered. I knew C# for VS.NET 1.1 and am gradually migrating to 2.0 and all of it's extra features. I just wanted a book that covered the new stuff... and could come as close to just injecting the information into my brain without all of the extra fluff. This book does exactly that. If you're new to .NET don't get this book... but if you're looking for an incremental upgrade book (as I was) that is concise, full of examples, and covers the whole spectrum of VS.NET 2.0 then this is IT! That said, the title is just a bit misleading... the first chapter is about the new C# keywords and constructs, but this book covers changes with Forms, ASP.NET (Themes, Master Pages, ...) and so forth. This books has been hard to put down and I'm seriously considering buying this one to add to my reference collection. I've learned a lot from it in just the past 24 hours. ... Read more

I bought this book a few years ago and finally started to dig in the other day.Crikey! This stuff is awesome!I have a bad habit of not underlining stuff in otherwise great books. But the first chapter is turnin' yella. So many gold nuggets in this thing.Pg. 25 "Don't Build It, Buy It", referring to programmers' natural inclination to mine/extract/mill the natural resources to make the wheels they often reinvent.3-0 out of 5 stars Small but valuable case study

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is great but CD has a problem
The book is well written in clear language and the example scripts are written in a special font making it easy to understand. I just cannot get the CD containing the compiler to work and it's vital to the lessons.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for learning the core language but not much else
This book is not bad if you are mostly interested in learning the basics of the language but without the few "bonus" chapters it has at the end the Linux content is close to zero. In the standard part of the book the only thing about Linux that is mentioned is how to compile using GCC, which isn't even strictly Linux because it can also run on Windows.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor.. Very poor
This book is full of mistakes. It also begins by teaching you to program one way, and then tells you that this is wrong. I picked up this book as a refresher, because I have not done any C++ or UNIX in 10 years, but even I could pick out the mistakes in the book. It does not explain the important aspects of C++ very well, skipping over most things with just a cursory description of what is going on. Do not get this book.. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Forget the title
This is a book that begins FROM BEGINNING and continues with simple examples. Maybe some will say level is low, but if you know C, try this after C if you want to add obj oriented programming to your skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro!!!
Being an introductory book on such a big programming language as C++, it would be naive to expect an in-depth coverage within its scope. And yes, it has little flaws here and there like most academic books. I used a different text written for beginners but at the end of it I didn't feel quite as confident in pursuing more challenging reading as when I finished this one. This text offers a clear and easy-to-understand exposure of the language's basic topics, which are exemplified by the use of short code in order that the student can quickly grasp the concept and move on.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Starting Point
This book is a good starting point for people wanting to learn how to program. The book is neatly organize, but the File I/O section lacks examples and detail. Engineers wanting to program using this book might find this book lacking more information on the math library and functions (hardly any description on that at all). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some serious pedagogical errors
Like all of the other "teach yourself in 24 hours" books, this one can be used to learn the fundamentals of C++ in a short time. Quite naturally, in keeping with the format, all you can achieve using this book is a basic understanding of the language, and in C++ that is a problem. It is a very hard language to write well and the simple, demonstrative programs in this book will serve to only get you started. Therefore, no one should ever use it for more than just an introduction. If your goal is to code in the language, then you should follow it up with something containing a more thorough coverage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great foundation for Visual Basic.NET
This book reinforces my good experience with the O'Reilly computer books. It gives a very good background for understanding object-oriented code -- in a structured and well-ordered approach. It starts as a primer, but rapidly builds, explaining the concepts well.Using console applications gives you a firm foundation for understanding the ideas. There's even some good humor along the way!

3-0 out of 5 stars For a beginner programmer
I ordered this book to start learning Visual Basic .Net, but instead it spends the first half the book teaching me 'how to program', THEN it 'teaches me Visual Basic .Net'.I already know how to program, so the first half of this book is wasted on me. For exmaple, Chapter 6 talks about 'If' statements, 'Do While' loops, etc.Chapter 7 talks about operators (i.e. +, -, =).If you have very little programming experience and want to learn Visual Basic .Net, then get this book.If you know 'If' statements, 'Do While' loops, and Operators, then don't get this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bill in Albany
The book is too basic even for a first semester programming class. Running the code in Dos, come on, no new programmers are being taught that as their primary run environment at colleges anymore.I supervise the CIS/IT tutoring lab at a small college and working with the VB.Net Studio environment is one of the toughest things for students to learn. Also, with the current growth in XML students, learning VB.Net in the Studio IDE is all the more important. This is a decent "third" book to have on the subject. The author knows his stuff, he just didn't write it well or enough of it. Lastly, one other reviewer said his vb coding went back 7 years and he loved this book. Must've been the best man at the author's wedding. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Book implies college CS students are idiots.
Unfortunately Liberty comes across with a chip on his shoulder against formal college education in this book. Statements like some of the best programmers he knows are "taxi drivers and psychologists" and former university training mainly teaches students to operate "mainframes". In the Introduction it says "According to a study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, by the year 2005 there will be over two million new jobs for software professionals!" which fails to mention most of the jobs will be overseas easily outsourced as making tennis shoes. Otherwise, Liberty still shows his expertise and there are good sections on advice for interviewing and resume writing. But in the end as an idiot, I wished I had majored in engineering instead of computer science especially when 90% of my undergraduate computer science student body were graduate students from the eastern side of the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really great book!
I think this book is the best choice for peaple who are wanting to learn how to program but don't know where to start. It doesn't teach you how to program in a specific language, but it shows you the basic thing of lots of languages. It has lots of book and magazine suggestions also. This book is very easy to understand. Although you might not agree with what Jesse Liberty is suggesting for your career, it's a great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent introduction but don't take his advice to heart
A more appropriate title for this book would have been "An Introduction to the Field of Computer Programming." It's an excellent read for someone interesting in understanding what computer programming is about. It is not, as the author claims, a guide to building a career as a programmer. Read more

This book may be the best thing since sliced bread and canned beer, as many reviewers seem to have already pointed out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Expanding Languages
I am a Computer Science major, and I have been learning Java.Knowing that I need to learn more than one language I decided to pick up C++, and I bought this book because it was the cheapest that Sams Publishing had.The book surprised me because it was perfect for someone who had an intermediate level of knowledge about programming. It explains in detail what the syntax does, and therefore makes it helpful when relating the algorithms used in both languages. The lessons are also short so there is not a lot of unneeded jargon describing every little thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Generally solid - but...
I found this book to be very useful. If you want to pick up some good, solid footing in C++, with or without a background in programming - this book is for you.The format is clean: 10 minutes or so at a time is perfect for getting into the office a little early and running through a lesson or two prior to commencing your workday. There is source code available on the books actual website on http://www.samspublishing.net, which helps this become a learning exercise, rather than a typing exercise, for those of you whom are advanced enough to just want to read solid source code.

2-0 out of 5 stars I didn't like it too much.
This book was chosen as the textbook for the AP Computer Science C++ class at my school.Having programmed in C++ for quite a while, I must say I was disappointed. Most all of the basics are covered, and I believe a beginnerwould, after reading this book, "know" C++.However, the styleof teaching isn't that great, and the order in which things are taughtisn't the best either. Also, much of the code appears untested, andcontains errors. The code also does not conform to the ANSI/ISO standard. I've read much worse, but I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone whoasked me about C++, and I definately would not use it to teach a CSclass.4-0 out of 5 stars Decent C++ primer
This book is intended to be a textbook for an introductory programming course for students who have never programmed before. You may agree or disagree with the premise (I disagree), but you have to admire the authors for trying.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is horrible
This book is horrible. The compiler sucks and most of the programs won't work with newer compilers such as Microsoft Visual Studio. It uses old style.I am learning C++ currently in school and I bought this as asupplement, but I think I will just stick to my regular book

1-0 out of 5 stars Every Thing About this book is bad
This is my first C++ book and I felt very dissapointed. The compiler provided in this book can't work at all.2-0 out of 5 stars NEVER WORKED!!
THE BOOK IS VERY WELL ORGANIZED. HOWEVER, THE COMPILER NEVER WORKED. I SPENT HOURS AND HOURS TRYING TO MAKE MY COMPILER TYPE "HELLO". FINALLY, I QUIT AND NOW I HAVE BOOK IN MY BOOKSHELF THAT NOBODY CAN USE. OFCOURSE, I USED A DIFFERENT BOOK, AND THIS ONE WORKED FINE (DIFFERENTAUTHOR). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've Found So Far
You can't teach yourself everything about C++ from just one book. You will need a few. But this one is the best I've found so far. Very well written, clear examples. This book is !!HEADS AND SHOULDERS ABOVE!! other C++ books geared for newbies, err Dummies.
