5-0 out of 5 stars Deke - PhotoShop - McClelland
I am sure there are other books that might be easier to follow and that might offer more than this one for learning all of what PhotoShop has to offer, but I just have not found them yet. Light to read with easy step by step instructions for the beginner as well as the accomplished image processor.
5-0 out of 5 stars One-on-One -- it's not just another Photoshop book
Deke McClelland knows his subject very well and presents it in a clear and orderly way so new learning rests on a solid foundation. The format works: read the lesson, watch the DVD-ROM video lesson, do the exercises, take the quiz at the end of the chapter. Each lesson is designed to be understandable by those without much Photoshop experience and still include a few techniques that even experienced users probably don't know. And he does it all with good humor. Work files and video lessons are all included on the DVD-ROM in the book, which is bound so it lies open and flat on the desk without any hassle.
5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect jumpstart for Photoshop newbies
This was the jumpstart I needed to learning photoshop. This is not so much a tutorial as it is a get-up and start-using photoshop one-on-one session, exactly as the title suggests. So instead of learning the interface in text-book procedural fashion, it's kind of like apprenticing for the author Deke (who also wrote the photoshop bible book).BTW, the author is notably an Master at photoshop, as is apparent when he tells you "nobody uses this command, you can do that function with this new command here".There's a lot to be distracted in photoshop, hundreds and hundreds of different functions, and it turns out that many of these functions are obsolete and only left-in to satisfy old users, so having Deke point these things out is fantastic.Eg, unsharpen mask, obsolete.smart sharpen, da-shizzle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought 3 Photoshop books, kept this one - its great!
I couldn't tell which book was going to be the most useful, so I got 3 different books on Photoshop. After looking through each of them and doing some "tests" where I looked up the same subjects in all 3 books to see which author/s explained things better, it was a no-brainer -- the Photoshop Bible for CS2 is the best book on Photoshop out there. The other 2 went back, next day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Photoshop CS2!
Between the thorough coverage and the authors' insights, this book can't be beat. I'm a photographer and graphic designer, and I wouldn't consider living without this book by my side in the studio. I don't want to have to take a class, watch a video, or wade through lots of personal commentary. I want to know what something does, how it works, why it's a useful tool/feature (or not, and if not, what to do), and then get back to work. This book is filled with great tips, useful tricks, honest, clear instructions, and great examples. If you can't tell, I recommend this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on Photoshop.
I looked into several Photoshop books before buying this one. I read the reviews, used the "search inside" stuff to read exerpts, and made my choice. Even with all that, buying books online can be a crapshoot - but this one paid off! This is a great book on Photoshop CS2. I've learned a lot already and keep this book right next to the computer so it's there when I need it. I like the style - not too jokey, not condescending - and the authors obviously know Photoshop like the back of their hands, including little things that you never even knew were there. The examples are practical but not oversimplified and the coverage of special effects, web graphics, and restoring photos is great. I'm sold, and recommend this book highly. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This Dummies is a mess!
Dummies books have been a staple of my computing/software resource library for a long time. This book was very disappointing. If you're looking for an organized presentation of the functions and capabilities of Adobe 7, leave this on the shelf. There are few visual examples in the book and very few tutorials that lead you through a topic in any organized way at all.To get something out of this book, I found myself jumping all over the place, following topic and function chapter references tossed in all too frequently, sifting through meaningless and annoying chatty writing, trying to piece together a tool's functionality on my own.And did I mention the writing style?Distracting, distracting, distracting.I felt like I was sitting in a computer class for octogenarians with ADD. Get to the point!!Leave it on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
This book is easy to use and understand. I was comfortable using the program in a week.

2-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop 7 for Dummies
Reads like stereo instructions. Too many technical graphics terms for a novice photo editor. I usually like the "for dummies" books but this one falls way short of the mark. I would recomend this book only to a seasoned graphic artist that was already familiar with the terminology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good program, difficult to learn
The product is a very good one but difficult to learn, I have spent much time in self help. The documentation is difficult to use and to follow.I had to separately purchase an instruction book.Particularly confusing is how it organizes the photo and the methods to categorize, tabing, collections, etc. After getting the hang of it, editing photos is really fun, and the results are great. Printing and emailing is rather simple.Good program, Thumbs Up.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must read.
I struggled with Photoshop Elements 4 until I found Deke McClelland's Photoshop Elements 4 one-on-one.His training methods are well designed and will lead you to an understanding of the power of Photoshop Elements 4 I never imagined. The video is better than first class and the book is written in a very clear way that leads the student on a guided descovery of Elements 4.I asked my local camera store for help and they promised something in the future. When I cruised through Amazon.com and read other reviews of this book I simply took a chance and bought it.Wow, what a wonderful surprise.Deke won't let you down.Paul

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have !!!
Photshop is an asset to anyone with a computer. This book, which is quite easy to follow, is a much needed addition to the bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am so happy to have found this book and DVD lesson
I have needed InDesign Training for a very long time.It is the only program the agency I work for is allowed to use, but I live in the middle of nowhere and have been unable to attend classes. This book and 2 hour DVD lesson totally has gotten me up to speed on making page layouts.I only wish I had bought it from Amazon instead of Barnes and Noble, I would have saved $15.At any rate, get this book. The best thing about it is that the author uses PRACTICAL examples for doing things. Most computer books expect you to know things already.Well, I didn't know squat. Now I do.The author runs you through simple examples, getting more and more complex with functions, until you have it down.I love that!I loved this book so much I ordered his Photoshop book too since I need to learn that program. So, if you bought InDesign CS2 and need help from the get go, GET THIS BOOK FIRST!

5-0 out of 5 stars If it wasn't for Deke....
I would never have tackled InDesign CS2 without this book. Deke lays it out, so to speak, in every way. Do-along lessons, The DVD and the large pictures showing you what it should look like create a visual safety net. You almost can't go wrong. The book lessons are so clear and Deke takes you through every way to do a thing in each lesson. If you're a keyboard freak there are keyboard shortcuts galore, include Deke Keys which you can install with the lessons. I am more of a mouse person and Deke makes sure to outline all the ways you can use the mouse to access pallets and work with graphics and text. Deke is enthusiastic about the software but brutally honest about it's few shortcomings. Best of all, he takes you through the trickiest parts of the learning process and manages to be funny all the while. I always love Deke's lesson plans. Instead of using a stuffy business format for the sample documents he presents you with projects like Little Pupper Friend's Cookie Recipe or Professor Shembops 1970's pop music quiz. It all feels less intimidating. Another good thing is the way Deke explains things for those of us who have been using PageMaker or QuarkXPress. Adobe InDesign CS2 One on One is a wonderful way to learn. The book is great for design people who are not particularly "techie". Still, InDesign CS2 is not for sissies.I know this sounds nutty, but I feel like Deke is right here with me every step of the way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enough with the shortcuts already
I bought this book because of the extensive amount of instructional video that accompanies the written text. It was something I was looking for in an instructional book - and I didn't find another book with 2+ hours of video. However, after only completing four of the chapters I cannot help but be bothered by the fact that the author has an awful habit of telling you ever possible shortcut configuration for every function. He spends an inordinate amount of time explaining all the shortcut possibilities which is very distracting when you are trying to follow along with an exercise. It's great to know all these handy shortcuts, but if you are just starting to learn InDesign (and I'm guessing here) you initially just want the basics. This approach really slows down the process. Unfortunately, these "shortcut digressions" seem to continue throughout the book. The video content (and the book content) probably could have been reduced by about 30-40% if he didn't labor about every possible shortcut every other sentence. In all fairness the book does contain a lot of content, but I am kinda disappointed by the video. They could have made this potentially excellent book truly excellent if they made an appendix of all these shortcuts rather than cram every option into every exercise. Very distracting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop 7 Bible
Well structure for the professional or novice. You'll find yourself looking trough it every chance you get.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love his human side of technology
I must say, as much as this book takes VERY LONG to get through, because I have to stop, try the stuff out myself and really try to understand it, I find myself motivated by Deke's humor. As much as he contradicts himself after saying that he'll be concise in the beginning but half the time he's talking nonsense (funny nonsense that is), you can't blame him. That's his style after all! I have found myself loving the book because I'm always curios to see what silly thing he's going to say next? I love it how he knows when to be serious about the tools and when to make a good joke about it. My favorite has to be the one about using the healing and cloning tools with a picture of a baby's bottom that heals the dents on his forehead.
5-0 out of 5 stars Use this as a reference book once you already know PS
This book describes the fine intricacies of all the tools, the filters and the features of Photoshop. Where other books lead you through lessons and tell you to set X tool preference to Y, and you may happily use the Y preference for years without even knowing there is also a Z preference, this book explains all the preferences for all the tools and gives illustrated examples of what the various settings produce.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop CS2 Bible - Professional Edition Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos and graphics, sage advice.
The features you need, the advice you want, the examples you'll refer to again and again: that's what you'll find in this book. The experience and insights that the authors bring to this book have made it one of my favorites among computer books in general and my total favorite among Photoshop books. I recommend this edition of the Bible to anyone who has already used most of the basic features and wants some expert advice to move them on to the next level. The "Professional" tag is appropriate, but you don't need to be an expert to use the book: that's where it takes you. Don't expect this book to baby you and for every single button and dialog box to be covered, because this is a book focused on the features you use for more advanced projects, and the work that pushes the edge of the design envelope. If you're looking for coverage of everything in the Photoshop menus and tools, get the main CS2 Bible, the one that's like 1500 pages. If you want to learn specific stuff to take your work to the next level, the Professional Edition is the one you want.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed...

3-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop 6 for Dummies
Although this book can be quite useful for basics, it is too laden down with useless titbits. Also, a lot of important stuff is hidden between these, so it can be very easy to become frustrated. The book is presented well, slightly too much light humour but it does at least presume that you (like I did) have no experience. Practice will make you a much better photoshop user than reading this book, but combining this with thousands of F1 searches will set you well on your way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dry, Dry, and still more Dry
I'd rather eat the pages of this book for lunch and swallow them without a glass of water than read any further from this bone-dry book.I found the humor in the book more iritating than helpful, and the expanse of long drawn-out paragraphs with very few visual aids proved this to be the worst Photoshop book I've laid my hands on.1-0 out of 5 stars It should be subtitled (forcomputer experts only)
I have been a pen & brush graphics artist all of my life. Now that I have retired, I decided to try computer image manipulation. I bought this book in the hopes of learning to recolor, flip, distort, or whatever via my computer (I just got my first one in 2000)and have found it maddening to use. The authors gloss over information vital to a basic understanding of Photoshop and then blithely show highly advanced image techniques that cannot be duplicated without the underlying knowledge. It pretends to being step-by-step, but ignores crucial steps. For example, a complex collage is created using a number of disparate images: how did they select only that portion of the original? How did they make the surrounding parts of the image transparent so the background shows through? This are the most basic maneuvers, but a couple of months with the book left me unenlightened. I have since found another book that delivers on the premise of this one, Photoshop 6 In An Instant by Toot & Woolridge, and am now happily photoshopping away -- this despite the fact that Photoshop 6 for Dummies was more ... and has many pages of color illustration, in contrast to Photoshop 6 In An Instant's reliance on B&W even to show color manipulation! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is for me, I am a Dummy :-)
Okay... Altho i am getting better, I still am not very savvy on the computer. Because of this book my friends think I am a photo guru!!! This book is soooo easy to understand and the example pictures are a big help. I am having so much fun!!! I highly recommend this book for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 3 For Dummies
I do a lot of scrapbooking and was quite disappointed when I purchased Photoshop Elements because I could not seem to get around in the program. Now that I have the Dummies book I'm navigating the program with the greatest of ease. The book has talked me through step by step in easy to understand language. My pictures are looking much better and I'm able to print the sizes I want and recently I've started creating accessories for my pages. So I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars The cutesiness is dull, dull, dull
I learned a lot from this book, but it was annoying to have to plow through a lot of meaningless chit chat to do so.The book could be 25% shorter without all the senseless yammer--which was not that funny. When I'm trying to understand a particular tool or function, I don't appreciate the extra time it takes to read about how pixel resolution is like grandma's oatmeal cookies, or whatever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help
I always had difficulty with the original manual. On a given subject it referred you to another place in the manual. The Dummies book does a better job of covering a subject in it's entirety. The index is also much better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than The Manual

According to the authors the RAW file format is mainly for use in transferring graphics between Apple and PC computers and loses a great deal of detail. In other words they wrote a book about Photoshop CS but they know little if anything about the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is realy a Bible
This book is really a bible covering everything about Photoshop CS. All what you need to know.I have two issues about this book: it is not tailored to a certain provision such as graphics designers, photographers and so on. The second is the lack of proper classifications, for example: file formatting is explained in full details, but not mentioned in the Table of Contents. Nevertheless it is a great book for those consider themselves serious Photoshop users. Looking forward to see CS2 version of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars anathema!
Who are we, mere mortals, to make easy criticism with the great achievement of the Master himself?
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
As interested in digital photography and art, I decided to buy this book after after a couple of excellent books from Scott Kelby. This is the kind of book that goes beyond the instructions on how to create/correct a digital image following predefined, but obscure, steps. This book is for those wanting to understand what's really behind the photoshop software with the objective to become a knowledgeable user of the product with new horizons of creativity. Very happy of the buy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars mohan
hi this is mohan mahat .i want to read the book ok photoshop 6.0.so sent me a book on the following address: 2-0 out of 5 stars Thick but not useful!
I don't know why this book has a 4-5 starts rating. It's thick and big and seems has more than enough info to learn for photoshop. But I really have no interest to read this and i even can't learn anything from this book. It's hard to follow and the paragraphs are long but not useful. For beginners, i really won't recommend this book. I'd rather pick a quickstart guide instead. But when you go for the advance level and want to learn more details, it might be a good reference book.

Editorial Review

This Dummies guide is designed for beginners who want to learn the core features in Photoshop 5 for Windows in a short amount of time. You start off with an overview of the two aspects of the package--painting images and editing images--and learn what's new in this version. The author explains how to navigate the interface using zooming, guides, and grids. In the second part of the book, he discusses image size, resolution, pixels, color, file formats, and file-saving and -printing issues. The third part of the book focuses on painting, photo retouching, and undoing your work--using the eraser and History palette, for example. In the fourth part, you really start messing with pixels by learning the basic selection tools, such as lasso and rectangle selections, and the more advanced ones, such as adding to and subtracting from a selection, extending a magic wand selection, and transforming selections and paths. You also apply color and gradients to selections. Finally, in the fifth part, you work with layers, type, filters, and advanced color-correction tools, such as contrast and brightness.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars i learned a lot from this book
As a person who uses photoshop for doing graphic/fine art, I learned a lot from this book it helped master what can be a very clunky program and use it to develop my fine art skills on computer also has 5.5 ( i am using 6 now ) get this book and you too will be able to use this unqiue program.

2-0 out of 5 stars An Uneven Book
As a newcomer to Adobe PhotoShop, I had high hopes for this book. It is of some limited usefulness but ufortunately it is a very uneven book. 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
i went through it with my term project images and got an A Simple to understand and basically just excellent. If your the kind who like to read through the entire manual first to get a rough idea of what photoshop is about, this is perfect. The humour was nice to have, but get slightly out of hand at times. But hey! it is a good book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Looks good but it is trouble
All in all, this is a usable book if you take the time to discover essential details that are missing. As you get into more sophisticated topics you find that about 10% of the procedures described in the book do not work. Essential steps, that could have been spelled out in a line of text, are missing and I have to experiment for close to an hour to discover what they are. The book is too verbose and could be condensed to half its size, with no loss of content. The humor is weak and adds nothing to the book; I never got a chuckle (and I like to laugh). There are no examples of creative use of Photoshop, even though this is why we want to learn the darn thing. I have used computers everyday since 1969, so I don't think that my troubles are caused by my ignorance. Unfortunately, I can't recommend a better book, since I stuck with this one and I managed to learn what I need. It is not a bad book to get you started, but you should look at other books before buying this one.

Deke McClelland and Galen Fott's Photoshop Elements 3 For Windows One-on-One bundles a 2-hour 'total training' video hosted by author McClelland with a fine reality-based program which offers the next best thing to a personal trainer. Use Photoshop Elements 3 For Windows One-on-One as a classroom text, too: each lesson ends with a test quiz.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Real Learning Experience
Here is a book that can really help you use Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0. The author uses his experience as Photoshop teacher to offer a comprehensive learning tool in the form of a book and a CD. The book contains all color pictures, illustrations, and screen shots with step by step instructions with which one can easily follow along. The CD not only contains the pictures from the book but instructional quick time movies for each chapter which really add to the learning experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Elements
I'd give this book 5 stars even if it didn't have the fantastic video lessons on the included CD. I knew nothing about digital photography or image editing before buying this book, and now my pictures look great. Thanks, Deke! I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars From knowing nothing to creating good layout
My only layout experience prior to getting inDesign was MS Publisher. This book got me up and running and quickly understanding this significantly more advanced software. I found most of the videos not very relevant, except for one or two chapters where the video covered a topic more thoroughly than the book did (example: pencil tool). Even though I would recommend this book to someone learning inDesign CS2, I have two negative comments I'd mention to them first:
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning resource
My only complaint - and it's very small - is the author's assumption that a certain set of fonts is "always" installed with InDesign. Apparently, that "always" doesn't necessarily apply if you happen to purchase the educational version. While that's fine for now - I don't necessarily need huge piles of additional fonts - it makes the lessons a bit frustrating because they tend to rely on the fonts. For example, in teaching kerning and tracking, the author assumes that you've opened a file set in a particular font, which will yield very specific results on-screen - which you'll have some difficulty reproducing if you don't happen to have those fonts installed.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful tutorial and reference
If you want to quickly get up to speed with Adobe InDesign, look no further! The introductory video segues with the lessons seamlessly. The lessons themselves are thorough, and each step is clearly presented, making it simple for a new user to follow.
