5-0 out of 5 stars A NATIVE WINDOWS C GUIDING ANGEL

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Window programming books
This book is one of the best because it forms a foundation for everything that comes after. If you want to understand Windows, you have to have it. It doesn't cover advanced topics, but in order to understand advanced Windows programming, you need to understand everything in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great foundation book
This is a very good book to build your win32 foundation with. But it is rather outdate if you want to make use of the latest windows os and with vista coming out, a new edition needs to be published. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Ready for .NET 3.0 Yet?
Just as I was beginning to get a bit of a handle on .NET Version 2.0, along comes .NET 3.0 as part of the new Windows Vista operating system. To be sure, you can run it on XP with SP2 installed after you have installed .NET Framework 3.0. The book presumes that you have experience with .NET 2.0 and with C#. If you do not, the author recommends you read some of his earlier books.
5-0 out of 5 stars The long awaited Programming Windows, 6th Edition!
This book is the destined to be not only a classic but also the standard for WPF development. It's look and feel is reminiscent of his previous classic: Programming Windows. So much so, in fact, that you could call this his long awaited 6th edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive WPF Book
I have had this book for about 2 weeks now, as Amazon delivered it to me early before the official release.I am a tech book junkie.I buy a lot of tech books. This is the best programming text I have purchased in the last couple of years.Petzold does a great job explaining WPF from both a nuts & bolts prespective and a big picture perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginning C# / .NET windows programming
Mr Petzold covers a lot of ground here. The most fun thing is that you can use the very same concepts in VB.NET or J# with no loss in the material. Sometimes I found the book a little bit long winded in its explanations, but in the end you always know that Petzold will deliver. The book seems oriented toward beginners, but experts can benefit too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of GDI+
If you have a pretty good knowledge of C# and are interested in GDI+, this book is a must-read. I bought it 4 years ago but didn't read it because Java was so hot at the time. Moving from Java to C# is a breeze with the help of this book and the free Visual Studio Express Edition. Microsoft has done an amazing job of improving the Dot Net framework and the C# language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funtastic book, 1200 golden pages .
The last reviewers described all, so I decided not going too deep in my review. At this time I didnt had finished this one yet but for what I already saw its a classic C# for sure. The book price is also very good and if you are thinking in getting knowledge of C# on Windows you will not get this book content in other book so easy, this one you must have in your shelf. Very good book from the Master Petzold. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars nice book to start c# and writing code for forms
I wanted to do some windows programming in C#, bougt a lot of books but found this the only one that really helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Introduction to C#, WinForms. and .net 2.0
This is hands down the most clearly-written explanation of programing windows forms using C# that I have read or seen on the market.Petzold has an easy and engaging writing style. He takes the time to explain the WHAT and the WHY of what you are doing. This is a great book for someone just sitting down to Visual Studio 2005 to begin learning C# programming. His examples and walkthroughs produce useful and functioning examples of the most common aspects of Win Form programming. My only complaint is that he can only dedicate a chapter to some pretty key concepts, like data-binding.My interest is piqued, and then the chapter ends and we move on to new concepts. This is a small complaint because what he does provide is complete and enlightening. It provides a solid foundation to build off of create your own experiments.
5-0 out of 5 stars Uses the New .NET 2.0 Enhancements for a Quick Start
The Microsoft .NET program continues to expand with each release of Windows. In the .NET Framework 2.0, introduced in the fall of 2005 significant enhancements were made. These enable the programmer to implement Windows applications that are both powerful and sharp looking with considerably less effort than before. This book is somewhat of a quick introduction to writing such applications taking advantage of the new features.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only a genius could write such!!!!
For years i have been searching for information on how computers really work under the hood. Many text just skimp over the whole process and leave you unfullfilled, but this book, will not let you down. It starts off from the basic or foundation, like the light bulb situation, bits and bytes and develops furthur into stuff like logic- AND and Or Gates and so forth, right down to programming languages and how the translation is made. after reading this book you will look at computers in a different way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book with many purposes
I hold a bachelors degree in computer science, but it has been 11 years since I have studied it seriously. This book has rekindled my interests, and I am now considering returning to school to get my masters degree.Charles Petzold is a very gifted author. He made several topics in his book much clearer than any professor or lecturer ever did.I recommend that anyone with an ounce of curiosity about the inner workings of computers read this book from cover to cover. Its destined to be a home library must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on technology in general
"Code" is a well-written, easy to follow and compelling book on technology in general. The book focuses on how, over time, the manner in which technology has changed how data and information are processed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning the basics...
Programming in the key of C# aims to introduce the programming language, C#, at a basic level. It covers fundamentals of modern objective programming features such as namespaces, classes and instances. It also reassures readers of what basic data types are supported in C# which follows the footsteps of .NET Framework.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect starting place for VB'ers
Charles Petzold, a veteran of technical book writing, proves himself in this book (again) to be a brilliant teacher. At around 420 pages it's slim in comparison to other Microsoft text books. Part of the reason is that, concentrating solely on the C# language, no screen shots take up space that is more effectively used to explain key concepts of this language & how it fits into OOP. If you're a VB programmer, (as I was) looking to get into C#, this is a great starting point. It does begin at the beginning, (Variable types etc) but don't let this discourage you as there are some subtle differences that you need to learn about which could save confusion in the future, for example, that there is much less in the way of implicit conversion of certain types & this must be taken care of in code. However, this section is a brisk read, & Petzold's clear explanations are enlightening. He really makes it easy to understand how to use this language with some good examples throughout the book. There is nothing about the IDE or controls & just enough on the Framework, but what he does introduce, he explains in depth. This approach keeps his focus on the language which is what this book, after all, is all about.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic introduction to C#
This is a great book for a beginning programmer trying to learn the fundamentals of C#. Every chapter is devoted to a key feature of the language (as opposed to discussing all data types in one chapter, for example) and Mr. Petzold's teaching style is wonderfully accessable without at all being too simple.

4-0 out of 5 stars It has it's uses.
For those people who are interested in just cranking out quick programs, I wouldn't bother with this book and would instead pick up something on MFC, or heaven forbid, Visual Basic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, Programming Win95 4th edition is a useful book.
Content is good, presentation poor.5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
For anyone programming windows user interfaces, this is the book you need.It is just the right amount of concepts and Petzold includes a clear, concise programming example for nearly everything he talks about. The examples are written in C and he does not complicate the issue by trying to teach other libraries such as MFC.Just pure C code.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
Petzold makes it clear that programming means coding, not dragging and dropping. And that should make it obvious why Wanna-Be-Coders won't like this one very much. With this reader, you actually learn programming at a very high and pure level, which makes it one of the best books on coding money can buy.
1-0 out of 5 stars Content needs to be brought up to date.
Want to code bit mapped circles and arcs? Want to re-invent "pong?" This is your book. Want to code business aplications - this book is a waste. There is more attention paid by the author to "Fun With Fonts" than to things that have been significantly improved in .NET like TreeView.5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is really a great source of information !
There could be lots of programming books about Windows 3.1 but this one is extraordinary. It has information for both beginners and advanced programmers. The source code is arranged so neatly and each critical point is explained comprehensively. Some of the chapters (e.g. Memory Management) just cover the subject generally but I can say that it is sufficient. Examples can be compiled with both Visual C++ and Borland C++. If you want to join the development race, this book will help you learn nearly all information about Windows environment although it is for previous version. ... Read more

... Read more
