5-0 out of 5 stars good for beginners
It is a very good guide book for beginners really. I knew maybe just a little about Mac. But definitely not enough to help me go though a smooth work process. This book teaches me shortcuts and the necessary surviving skills I needed. I would recommend to other people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Tutorial
Having switched from a PC a year ago and having suffered through 12 months with no manual, it is a relief to have it. It is written in plain English, very basic intro to Tiger OS X and should absolutely have been provided to customers free with the computer. Apple is too cute in assuming everyone, of course, is intuitive about "getting" its system. If you've spent much time in PC land it is a huge transition. This book is great because it assumes no knowledge and provides basic definitions. I also bought another "Missing Manual" for iPhoto and that was helpful, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU WANT TO BE IN PICTURES...!!
Are you a Macintosh filmmaker and DVD designer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author David Pogue, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is designed to give you a grounding in professional filming and editing techniques.
4-0 out of 5 stars OK, I see how that's done!
After searching Apple's support site for help with using these two programs, I turned to David Pogue's excellent manual.I have several of David's manuals and this was certainly up to his standards. Easy to read and follow.Although there is a tremendous amount of meat in the programs, you probably wouldn't discover all the potential without spending a little time with another excellent Missing Manual.I would recommend this to anyone interested in building a professional iMovie or creating a smooth DVD collection of favorite images or clips. And, with almost no effort at all, you can build an out of the ordinary slide show made complete with music, fades and a nice variety of special effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be your own movie director yourself - painless!
It would be natural to think why does you need to buy this 22 dollars book, if iMovie and iDVD is so easy as Apple claims. But unfortunately, it is not easy as they say, (as all software vendors which want to earn more money by save the cost to print clear written manual) It need some extra help, with more English, I mean. In this point of view, this book is more than worth, in particular, you can learn more tips and advice to successfully make your own movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give you clear look of little giant
This book gives you the bird-eye view of the world's renowned photo management software, it has some useful information for amateur photographer who is intended to use iPhoto software, written in plain english. It is little interesting that one-thirds of the entire book contents are cover how to choose the right digital camera and how to take a good shot, of course, you don't have to worry since its another two-thirds of pages are fulled about some kind of "soft" thing, which is about acquire, manage, tag, retouch and share or archive your pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars good guide

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
I've been using Windows since the early 1990s and recently bought my first Mac. At first I thought this wasn't the book I wanted.I wanted to learn the OS on its own, not in "translation." For example, you'll find things like this in this book: "Finder = Windows Explorer," "Dock = Taskbar," etc. I thought it would hinder learning in a way total-immersion wouldn't; I'd hoped to learn to use the Mac directly. So after my husband picked up "Switching to the Mac" the first day I had the computer--in order to figure out how to network the Mac to our PCs and printers, and to transfer files, etc. (all of which is in this book)--I ordered four other books. I wanted to read them like other reviewers did: straight through, fun learning. But, it's not as easy as I'd hoped to learn a whole new operating system and, for me, the manuals don't prove to be fun reading -- as cheeky as their humor can be. So, I find myself reaching for "Switching to the Mac" as a necessary reference book. It presupposes that the reader is proficient at using a computer, but not a Mac (unlike other books, which either assume no computer knowledge or are written in "Mac language" for those familiar with previous Mac operating systems.)
5-0 out of 5 stars "Switching to the Mac" - Entertaining and Informative

5-0 out of 5 stars Panther help is on the way!
This is not the first user manual, by David Pogue, that I have purchased. I rely on these publications to not only give me the basics, but also a more advanced understanding of new and unfamiliar Mac operating systems. Get to know Panther with the help of David Pogue!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS Panther, The Missing manual
Excellent help so far. Our school IT administrator was so impressed he is ordering a copy for the staff. I never realised you could continue to burn info, images etc onto an ordinary cd! The Expose feature pointed out in this book is brilliant for quick access to school reports. I am not very familiar with the MacIntosh computers but this book is going to be a great source of info for OSX.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bilingual
I'm becoming bilingual--I'm learning to speak Apple as well as Windows. I just got a new iMac G5. Apple basically tells you to learn the system by pushing all the buttons to see what they do. Yeah, right. I also have the XP Missing Manual. This is a good series, a lot better than the Dummie series, if you really are a dummie. The organization is good and there is a lot of information, starting with the basics and going from there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There is no better book for new mac users
This is a must-have book for all new Mac users and not only! Don`t waist your time by figuring out everything by yourself or calling up your friend everytime you have a problem - this book will solve most of them and even more. David Pogue is a great, funny writer who helps you make your life easier and love your computer even more !

5-0 out of 5 stars A Common-Sense Book NOT Written for Dummies
David Pogue has a genius for making the seemingly-complex simple enough for the average person to understand. This is the perfect gift for a writer writing about the Macintosh system; once you get over your intimidation about computers by following Pogue's straightforward and sometimes humorous examples, the user-friendliness of the Mac makes itself obvious, and you're on your way. An excellent, useful book for beginner and seasoned user alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, funny, and informative
I read this book a few years ago when I bought a used Mac Plus at a garage sale. Mr. Pogue put me on track with my old computer in a very short time. After a few few months, my relatives and friends were calling me for advice. In many cases I was able to help using what I learned in this book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Average User
After a few minutes of reading and in front of the PC, I was able to understand many of the new features in XP Pro. This book should have been included with the software. I considered myself as a fairly competent PC user, but the book unlocked all the items that you cannot find using the "Help" function in XP Pro. At least it seems that way to me! I highly recommend this purchase for ALL PC users.

5-0 out of 5 stars He's Right, It Should Have Been In the Box
The title is right! This is the book that should have been included in the basic box with XP Pro. It is set at just the right level for the average user trying to come up to speed on a new operating system. While the basic user interface is more or less the same as the previous windows operating systems, the underlying code structure is based on NT rather than the older DOS/Windows.
4-0 out of 5 stars connecting to the Internet
The very latest from David Pogue's eponymous publishing house [and O'Reilly]. The book goes into myriad useful tips on best using Microsoft's XP Professional. A very stable operating system, unlikesome earlier efforts by Microsoft. Replete with attractive consumer level utilities. The book does go into system type aids, like showing the full power of the start menu, taskbar and control panel. All to the good. But somewhat prosaic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for all
Even if you aren't switching, this book provides accurate information on Mac OS X and the technical help for transferring documents to a Windows computer. David Pogue, my favorite mac writer, known for his vivid style, won't let you down. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't recommend enough
If you're a PC user and you're buying a Mac, for whatever reason, do yourself a favor and buy this book.I've been a PC user for most of my life, and all of my previous Mac experience had been with OS 9 or earlier. When I decided to buy a 12" Powerbook (also very highly recommended) I went out and picked up this book.Despite its size I had it read in less than a week. It's very well written, informative but still fun to read, and, a rarity in computer books, even not having the computer right in front of me didn't keep me from understanding and learning from this book.In short, it covers everything you'll need to know to get started, and it does it from the point of view of a PC user, making the transition a quick and relatively painless one.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for making those fancy DVDs
After several trips to car shows with my husband, I had lots of beautiful photos sitting in iPhoto ready to print.I thought a DVD would be more useful and enjoyable for him, and tried to make a DVD project - NOT!Having already used The Missing Manual books, I promptly went out and bought this one.Great choice, as it filled in the blanks and gave me lots of ideas also.I am a photographer, not a tech person, and am pretty clueless when it comes to creating projects on the computer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive guide to working with video on the Mac
I had recently started using a Mac at work, and suddenly I was put in a position to work with video on the Mac. Mr. Pogue's other books had been very helpful to me as I began to learn my way around the Mac, so I thought I would pick up this one to help me with my video work. I was very glad that I did. You see, iMovie HD has tools that help your movie look professional, but the iMovie HD help files are very tedious to go through. There is a great deal of referencing, cross-referencing, and nothing is smoothly laid out. This book is another story, as it is very well laid out with clear instructions and illustrations. It is very long, but since these applications are powerful, it would be expected that any clear explanation of them is going to require some space.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Buy It!
Very informative AND entertaining! If you feel you are even the least bit interested in breaking into digital film making this book is fantastic. I have been using iMovie for several years now and have a camcorder. However, I thought this book might help me kick things up a notch. It certainly will. I have only gotten through the first fifty pages, but I've already learned enough justify this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars iPhoto 5 Missing Manual
The book was as advertised, arrived in very good time and in excellent condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look out! This book is obsolete.
Do not buy this book unless, for some reason, you are determined to use an obsolete version of iPhoto. The newest version of iPhoto is iPhoto 6 (SIX!!!) and it is VERY different from iPhoto 5.(Sorry David, I wish your book was for iPhoto 6.I would buy it then. I do have your Mac OS X Tiger Edition, and it is GREAT!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, beautifully, and worth every penny!
Picking up this book, the first thing you notice is how great is looks. It's printed in full color, with screen shots on nearly every page. I started the book expecting to jump right in to using iPhoto, but found that the entire first section of the book covers buying the right digital camera and a a guide to taking great looking pictures. I skimmed this section rather quickly as I already owned a camera and understand the basics of lighting and composing pictures. What I did read looked very useful for someone getting into photography for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars GarageBand: The Missing Manual Delivers As Promised
Although I would have preferred the new edition outlining the latest version of GarageBand, this book gave me what I wanted. I was able to finally USE GarageBand, whereas before I couldn't figure out how to do anything with it. The "missing manual" idea comes through again! Sometimes, you just need to read the manual.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS is your Garageband book
After using Apple's super-duper Garageband for about a month now, I finally decided on picking up a supplement book. I read through 4 of them (I work at a library), and knowing what was needed to be in there, I can now confidently announce: THIS is the one to get. It's got what you'll need to complement your recording experience. THIS is the one with THE MOST USEFUL INFORMATION.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, beginner to advanced topics, well done
GarageBand is great fun and so easy it doesn't come with any kind of manual - without this book I was able to easily throw some loops together and create "music".Even my four year old daughter was able (with a minimum amount of help) to put together some piano, guitar and drum loops that sounded great. However, after the cool-factor wore off, GarageBand went back into a dusty corner of the Applications folder, until I picked up this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars BAND ON THE RUN! BAND ON THE RUN!
Would you like to be able to create professional sounding musical recordings? If you would, you're in luck! Author David Pogue, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that will guide you through a long list of enhancements, large and small, that make GarageBand a better musical tool than ever before.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone working with GarageBand
GarageBand is not aimed at professional musicians. Instead it is intended to help amateurs produce music easily. The application comes with 1,000 pre-recorded sampled loops, plus 50 sampled or synthesized instruments which can be played using a MIDI keyboard connected to the computer, or using an on-screen keyboard. This is a complex piece of software, thus enters David Pogue and his "Missing Manual" series to explain it all.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than a Manual
David Pogue's, "GarageBand 2: The Missing Manual" is much more than a Manual for GarageBand 2. It is a treasure-trove of tips and tricks, a detailed-yet-comprehensible resource, and it is the best non-periodical Computer publication I have had the joy to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars MacWorld MacSecrets 6th edition
The book is great as far as it goes. It has only general information on Mac OS X. The authors promise additional "unlimited edition" chapters; however, the website where these chapters are supposed to be available no longer exists. Hungry Minds publisher was bought by Wiley and Sons, but the website was not acquired by them.
3-0 out of 5 stars The best in the Mac community, but outdated now.
This book, like almost everything else by the insanely great David Pogue, is an extremely handy Macintosh book. As someone who does some part-time Mac repair and support, it's handy to have on hand. Not only does it go over the important things you'll need to know, it's also chock full of easter eggs and other fun hints.2-0 out of 5 stars I need basic info, not cute tricks
I attribute the wide acceptance of these Mac books to the fact that thoroughgoing software manuals are apparently not provided by manufacturers anymore.I bought the 5th edition of this series when I acquired an iBook a couple of years ago.I hoped to learn more about deploying the basic capabilities of my OS 9.1 software than the little help screens provide. In the two yearsI've had the book, I've found almost nothing I needed to know to solve a real problem. The book seems to try to deal with several versions of Mac software and is actually a grab bag of "look at this cute trick" features, which may not even be achievable by my particular version of the OS.It may be that I bought the wrong book, but it seemed the most likely one on the shelf.Read more
