3-0 out of 5 stars An OK Java Book -- Not as Good as Their Other Books
This book follows the Deitels' standard format and content used in the other two of their books I've read ("C++ How to Program (4th Edition)," and "C How to Program (Fourth Edition)").As before, the teaching method, programming style, most of the examples used, and most of the problems presented are largely the same but have been rewritten to a Java perspective. If you've read and liked any of the Deitels' other books, this book will be fine for you and you'll know pretty much what to expect from it.
1-0 out of 5 stars I hate this book
I am a programming newb with a geek streak a lifetime wide. I took a Java class this summer hoping to begin groking the one final frontier of computing that has always eluded me. We used this as the text. As somebody who teaches postsecondary courses in an entirely separate field, I feel this book is not a good first choice for an instructor in comp sci, especially for courses for nonmajors or beginners. The prose is exceedingly dry and longwinded *without real purpose*, and tests even my attention span... which is ordinarily sufficient for a continuous performance of the Ring Cycle. What really hacked me off is the way that the book handles terminology and syntax-- from the very beginning, the code examples often use parallel terms within the code in a way that makes it utterly unclear to the newbie whether they're staring down the barrel of a method name, a parameter/argument, what-have-you, which makes it very difficult to trace the logic of the code and get a good handle on the syntax. I have had far better luck grasping the concepts of Java and programming generally with Beginning Java for Dummies, believe it or not. I am a mature and educated adult actually INTERESTED in this topic and this book was absolutely dreadful to me-- instructors, please do not think you're going to choose this text for the present generation of undergrads and have it be anything but an utter waste of a hundred bucks for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone
While I found this book informative and detailed, I think that may be the main problem with it.It is written in a confused manner that gives the reader too much information on each page.I was constantly feeling bombarded. The information is presented in several different ways on each page and it can get disorienting while reading. That said, the book is very thorough and well researched.I am not sure that it is anywhere worth the price, however. For a third of the money you might consider Java: A Beginner's Guide by Schildt, or one of the O'Reilly books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone!!!
I am a super beginner programmer with NO experience whatsoever. Well, my buddy is profiecient in SEVERAL languages, including java, Visual basic, and python, and he wanted to learn C++, so i decided to learn with him. At first i went through countless online tutorials, then i went and bought some books, but they were all too confusing! So finally, i went online and did some diggina and found this book, so i told my friend and we both bought this book, and it is fantastic!!
1-0 out of 5 stars F- -
This was the required text for an introductory C++ class I took last semester where I received an A.I point that out so that nobody will suspect bitterness on my part when I say that this is simply the worst textbook I have ever owned.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning to C++
This was the book that was used for a C++ class I took this summer. It is a good book, and made some of the more complex aspects of C++ easier to understand. The examples are clear and illustrate the points of the book well. The material is presented in a clear and logical manner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook
This was my college text for an intro level class within my information systems major at the University of Texas at Tyler. While I was first a bit worried over the sheer size of the book I soon came to love it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as some may suggest...
This book is too dense, basicly all you are getting is one third of the book on the subject. However, the explanation is well written and clear, but it follows few chapters after given example code.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book on C (Emphasis on Beginners)
This book is used in FSU's CGS 3408 course: "Introduction to Programming with the C Language."In the preface, the Deitels state that this book is for everyone (beginners to experts) who want to learn C.They've made a very good stab at that goal, but realistically, I'd have to say that those who are professional programmers in other languages will find this book too long for their needs. For beginners (and even those moderately versed in other languages), this is an excellent book.I really have only three minor gripes about it:

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid foundations for C# 2005 programming
Using this book, with the MS Visual Studio .NET 2005 version, the MS Visual C# 2005 version, and the MS SQL Server 2005 version, one can learn a lot with the new platform. The codings are very much the same as the 2003 version. It is not too difficult for any one who has done C, C++, Java, or Visual BASIC programming. The exercises are very good and have been tested in corporate training sites.I am currently using an older version of this book, for a training class with 14 electrical engineers. Four people are using this book. They are happy with the book, exercises and the software. They are working on their final projects now.

4-0 out of 5 stars You need to know the target audience
I believe this book is targeted at new programmers or programmers who have no experience with VB language. I have read the previous edition cover to cover. I have to say this book does a good job of bringing your (VB) programming skills to a level that is just below commercial level. That is to say, despite the sheer volume, it does not teach you everything about VB.NET, many major advanced concepts are glossed over. For example, what is exactly the difference between a module and a class?(not explained clearly) Why are why namespace names seems to be hierachial?(glossed over) What's a inner class(Not included)? Why do we need structures? Why can't we just use classes for everything(Not included)?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best Visual Basic Book ........Period!
Just when I thought their second edition was the best, the Deitels have certainly outdone themselves once again. This book flat rocks. This book contains so much useful information it is unbelievable.

3-0 out of 5 stars it's a little much
For learning how to program from scratch, i wouldn't recommend this book. It's to fast through javascript. Yet I haven't read all 1000 pages yet, that's what I've taken from it so far. Seems good for asp and stuff like that though.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great all-in-one, but too Microsoft-centric
This book overall is the best general introduction to website development technologies that I've found. I'm coming from the perspective of a professor who needed to teach HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and any server-side scripting language to my students. After deciding to use PHP, I loked for several appropriate books, and I did find numerous good options, but at the very most, any given book would only cover two of the technologies I needed. Thus, I would end up with at least three or four books that had way more than necessary and would cost up to $200 for one course.
1-0 out of 5 stars Deitel Considered Dangerous
I was unfortunately subjected to the second edition of this book during my graduate studies at DTU. In my opinion there's only one good thing to say about this book, and that is that it's the only book I've seen where you get a comprehensive introduction to all of the techniques for developing and serving web-pages. Unfortunately, the authors are living in a Miocrosoft Internet Explorer only world, which especially is reflected in their chapters on (x)html and javascript. Problem is, no version of IE is actually capable of understanding xhtml, so what you are in fact taught is xhtml 1.0 served as text/html which is treated as hmtl 4.01 in all browsers. Even worse, the third edition has rewritten all the examples in xhmtl 1.1 which *should*not* be served as text/html. Even worse, the xhtml examples given will trigger an error in IE 6 that will get IE 6 to behave as IE 5.5 in quirks mode - inclusive the css box model error. As to the javascript examples, the book isn't teaching you the w3c DOM but only the IE DOM, thus all examples using eg document.all will possibly fail in some browsers. And document.write isn't allowed if you are serving your pages as application/xhmtl+xml. I'm considering this book dangerous because it doesn't teach you how to code according to the w3c standards but only according to the 'Microsoft standard' ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Visual Basic.NET How to Program, Second Edition
I had to buy this book for a programming class in Visual Basic.Net.I've previsously had a course in Visual Basic and got an A so I am not new to programming.I say all that to say, this book falls far short of what I hoped I was getting for $100.I've typed in some of the example progams word for word and cannot get a simple program to work, generating random numbers, for example.I'm at the point now where I'll have to go shopping for another book in this subject, the Deitel book is nothing but frustration to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bottom Line.....................The Deitels rock!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to like
Remember when you had to read classical literature, and it seemed like the author wouldn't change paragraphs for pages at a time, and it was hard to keep your place, pay attention, or care? Well, this book is exactly like that. It is chock full of "information", I'll give it that. Problem is, their examples DON'T WORK. I'm trying to do SQL database management using the code from the book for a template, and it doesn't function whatsoever. I've wasted hours because this book is worthless as a reference, even worse as a textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars there are good examples !
this book is not suit for j2ee beginners, no detail explanation to build basic j2ee idea; but if you have some concepts about web components and ejbs but no sense in real world projects and how to deploy projects into a server, there are a lot of examples in this book, it is a good practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aging but excellent book
This book on Python is very complete and at the time it was published was better than any other book on Python. It is still an excellent book and has more information than any other Python book on the market.I have used the book as my major reference work for several years. For non-GUI programming you will find most of your questions answered in this book. The general tips on structure and theory of programming are particularly useful for people who do not have a formal education and degree in computer science.
2-0 out of 5 stars Better name it The Python Bible
Bibles, in the profane sense of the word, are huge books filled with clutter and not meaningful structure, which attempt to cover way more than they should. This is a clear example. It might be worth a quick look to a particular chapter, just to get a quick grasp of a particular area like XML, pygame, tkinter, etc. But definitely, this is not the book a beginner should use to learn the language, because as many said before, it seems to be a blind translation from their also crippled Java book. This reader, who cherished their C/C++ book couldn't be more dissappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
I purchased Deitel & Deitel's C++ How to Program book long ago, and found it to be comprehensive and extrordinarily helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wretched
The text and examples in this book are too bogged-down in Visual Studio-isms for it to be a good introductory programming text, but the material is also too basic for experienced programmers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great coursebook, but heavy for the beginner
Like a few others said, this book is very verbose at 1500 pages, but it's overkill for most people.I like it because it's got lots of coverage on many areas, but the examples are too big and too many and take from showing the meaty theory around each chapters objectives.I still give it 4 stars because others who have looked it over told me it's not too bad

1-0 out of 5 stars A huge over written mass of book
I've been reading technical books for 25 years and this book was recommended to me by someone else - what a let down. First, way too verbose on every subject. I have never seen a book with so much miscellaneous and distracting stuff crammed into one page. The book is 1500 pages of which half don't need to be there. This might work in a class room, but a huge mistake for individual learning. They call there code samples live code, but I call it filling the pages. It's better to explain concepts with simple examples first, then build on them, and this book fails miserably. Many times, only a 2-3 paragraphs explains something, then it goes on for 10 pages dissecting samples. Then briefly concludes before whisking to the next long sample. It's quite the jumble. Also, open any page in this book and you will see 20 bold highlighting of keywords that is very distracting. Also, the pages are thin and have a glare that I find annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to operating systems
If you are a fan of the other Deitel books, you will probably like this one as well.I used this book in an undergraduate operating systems course and found it to be very useful.I later used the "dinosaurs" book (Silberschatz et al.) in a graduate course and was quite disappointed by the lack of detail.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good intention != good implementation!
As many other reviewers have mentioned, this book has good content and very well written. However, the plethora of ancilliary information and cliche side-notes, mini-case-studies make what could've been a bar-non primer into a dreadful book. Even though I particularly think that OS is one of the bastions of computer science and thus I think it's a very interesting field, the authors totally missed their target audience insofar as design and layout is concerned! Additionally, this book is peculiar in that it tries to teach some OS examples using (of all possible languages) Java! What gives? Even my teacher (who usually defends this book) was upset about that one. And little by little the author manage to get a book you liked at the beginning of the semester into this horrendous text you don't even want to glance into. I gave three stars, because I do think that the content in the first five six chapters is really well explained and supported...overall...buy it if you must!

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but overstuffed with unnecessary material
There are some good things to say about this book. It's written in clear, plain language, with helpful illustrations and code examples.Key terms are highlighted and defined concisely.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a complimentary book to E-business and E-commerce
I bought this text thinking it would compliment the E-business and E-commerce How to Program text (it was recommended that way). However, it is really just a reconstituted version of the other text, which also falls short of its advertised use.Don't waste your money!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid XML Book
I read some of the other reviewer's comments on the book and I agree with some and disagree with others. In comparison to other popular XML books it's not perfect but it's solid. If you are like me, a beginning XML programmer then you need to learn XML hands on and the book gives just that. Giving you examples and problems to apply what you just read is the best way to learn and thats what this book does. I read the "XML by Example" by Marchal and although that was a solid book also, it doesnt give you the material or examples for YOU to practice. Marchal doesnt offer the code samples for download either. One reviewer said that in order to complete this book's self review exercises you have to use outside sources. This is true but think about it...what better way to learn than by being challenged?

It still somewhat amazes me that Visual Basic has stood the test of time like it has.It keeps getting updates and facelifts, and continues to "play well" in today's environment. If you need a comprehensive guide to the language and the programming environment, I think you would be well-served by the book Visual Basic 2005 for Programmers (2nd Edition) by Paul J. Deitel and Harvey M. Deitel. Not much seems to be missing, and there are a few features that would cause me to highly recommend it to the Visual Basic crowd...

5-0 out of 5 stars Of Syntax && Semantics....
The Deitel's give you - the inclined reader either entering into or creating within the programming world - a framework upon which to rectify your programming prognostics.Programming is a fine art, delicate though demanding, and one not readily dealt with by the lazy or pseudo-informed.Take my specific background for instance.A college-level course in Problem Solving with C; essentially an intermediate electrical engineering course teaching the ropes of the C language in addition to hand-coding using the terminal, in a Linux environment. This course offered no options; i.e. the compiler was gcc (can't remember the version, maybe 3.0 or so), the editor was Emacs (wonderful environment, having all the essential tools and debugging features). However, it was a grand experience in that it was learned how programming can only truly be ascertained via actually sitting down, hammering out hundreds of lines of code (thousands in one assignment), and then wracking the brain by having to debug stingy, pesky, occassionaly habitual tid-bits of coding error.Emacs is a joy since it displays run-time errors and their corresponding line(s) in the program itself. However, one can frequently expect to encounter, or have coded, a buggy piece of code on line, let's say, 268; meanwhile, albeit this is the line the compiler has registered or flagged for error, the actual bug may lie all the way up in line 250, or 100, or perhaps even a silly misused or unused constant declaration. After runnig the gauntlet of beginning trials regarding programming - in any language - it is safe to say that you should be fairly confident in your abilities, and view programming as a creative but cautious - still extremely tedious requisites - process and endeavor. 1-0 out of 5 stars THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES
Why so many CS departments seemingly choose this book is beyond me.After taking an introductory computer science course I'm convinced that I could write a much better tutorial.
5-0 out of 5 stars The authority on C++ from the C++ authorities
This is my 3rd copy of this book.I had the 3rd edition in college, the 2nd edition for a work related project, and finally this copy (4th edition) for another college class. These books definitely got better in later editions, and they were good to begin with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best
This is the best technical book i have ever read. The reason is it actually has some meat to it. Definatly the best visual basic book out there.
4-0 out of 5 stars How To Program VB6
This book is written well and logical, it has many items other books lack. This book is a first year comp sci book and that is why it does not have all the answers in the back; read the intro people. Comparing this to other titles I have used, this one fits my needs very well, easy to read, follow, and understand. You must put an effort into the reading to get the best out of it.If you do not work at it, its true, you will think this book is difficult.Deitel & Deital books fill my programming library now, don't waste money on other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very valuable to the serious student
This is not a book with big pictures and lots of redundant information: it's packed with valuable information, extremely well structured and geared towards the needs of the beginner as well as the more advanced student. Each chapter is preceded by an introduction to the respective topic followed by programming projects exemplifying the use of commands, procedures, data types, etc. It is rounded off by concise recap of the material covered. All programming examples are supplied on the accompanying CD ROM which also includes - lo and behold! - a MS VISUAL BASIC 6.0 Working Model Edition as a FREEBIE. So you do not even have to have your own Visual Basic Programming environment in order to do all the exercises and try out the examples given in the book. Algorithms and theoretical background are supplied where necessary and just add to the fun of learning. A wealth of good tips is summarized for each chapter under the headings of "Common Programming Errors", "Good Programming Practices", "Software Engineering Observations" and "Testing and Debugging". The practical hands-on approach to programming of the book is topped off by self-review exercises at the end of each of the 21 chapters for which solutions are supplied and discussed adequately to make them a true learning experience. More challenging exercises are offered to the more ambitious student. This is one of the most instructive and comprehensive books on Visual Basic I have ever had a chance tolay my hand upon. Highly recommendable! ... Read more
