5-0 out of 5 stars On the short list
Five stars.I recommend 3-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Guide to NOT SO CREATIVE HTML
When I was told that this book was going to be used for my technology class I was kind of excited because I am fairly familiar with the Lynda.com material. I had picked up her Learning Flash 5 CD-ROM and walked away with a feeling that it was money well spent, and that I had come away with a great deal of knowledge about Flash. Now keeping this in mind, when I picked up this title and read through it (mind you unlike some reviewers I read cover to cover), I did not feel like there was too much content that I could walk away with and use in any real world situtation. The techniques she used, produced very amateur-like pages that would not pass for a high school student's work. Mind you, for some of the fundamental HTML concepts the book was good, but for any real world stuff I felt like I was lookig at those pages where you know the person made it in Frontpage 98' without the plug-ins. Any of the cool stuff like the Javascript Rollovers was gone over so rushed and with so little detail, that it would have been better to have omitted it from the book. I am sorry this book just really was not worth the money.. I would look to that HTML Quickstart book over this one any day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Combination of Design and Code for Beginners
I like the idea of combining a designer and a developer to create an HTML book. The "family reunion" at the front of the book is banal and adds nothing to the book, but once by that, it's pretty smooth sailing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than H O T for Acrobat 5! A Must Have.
My favorite tutorial books for software are the Hands On Training and the Classroom In A Book series. And, if forced to choose one series or the other, I'd choose H O T.5-0 out of 5 stars Deep ImageReady
The most comprehensive tutorial you're likely to find covering PhotoShop's "little web sister", leave it to Lynda.com to come up with THE ImageReady book. Don't let the title mislead you, especially if you're already a long-time P-Shop veteran. The information contained in these pages, accompanied by outstanding tutorials and full color illustrations, is NOT a rehash of stuff you already know; it is a means of making the transition from traditional publishing to creating full-blown web pages with minimal compromise.5-0 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best!
This is by far the best and most informative and detailed book of its kind. It covers every aspect of "everything you ever wanted to know about" rollovers and rollover animated menus! It does not leave you 'missing something' or saying: 'yes, but it really doesn't cover...' - It covers everything! The accompanying CD is excellent! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars On Adobe Affter Effects H.O.T.
This is a great guide to learning Adobe After Effects. Interactive and highly effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars solid introduction
traditionally the Meyers books are considered the standard, but they're kind of dense, a lot to absorb, and they move through material a bit fast. If you're committed and hungry, then maybe they're what you want, but if you want a gentler beginning to build your confidence, I think you're better off starting with this book, and then taking on the Meyers books once you have a solid overall grounding. The difference in layout alone is plenty reason: this book has a lot more white space and breathing room, while the Meyers books are just crammed margin to margin, and feel smaller, even though they are the same size. Properly delivered, AE gives itself up wonderfully, but there's so much to it, you run the risk of overwhelm if it piles on too fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST BOOK FOR "AFTER EFFECTS 6"PERIOD !!
I am a Production Manager for a major TV Station in the Southwest. This is by far the most comprehensive and informative step by step book on "Adobe After Effects" that I have ever read on the subject. Perfect if you are a beginner and working on MAC platform. If you are already familiar with previous versions of After Effects maybe you should look for a more technically advanced book. But if you are new to the subject you won't find a better book than this one. Period! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book with CD does not work on MS Windows XP
It is very disappointing that this is not "noticed" in the Amazon.com advertisement for this Book and included CD.A waste of time and effort.I need this for a college class but apparently it was developed to work on an older version of MS Windows... and not XP.
5-0 out of 5 stars You?ll Be a Web Designing in No Time
This is the book you're going to want to have if you're still running System 9 on a Mac. Hey, don't act so surprised, there are still a lot of people out there who are. System X is great, the Panther is superb, but good old System 9 is still the workhorse it always was and it's quick as the devil, especially on my older G3 machines.5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!

4-0 out of 5 stars The book is great... the video was decent
If you are new to Dreamweaver, or have been struggling with it, this is the best book written to date. Formatted as a learning book, rather than a bible, it takes you through enough information to get you started. There are, however, too many features of DW to print without resorting to a strait reference book so when you finish this, you'll still have plenty to learn. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best way to learn Fireworks
I was struggling with Fireworks until I got the CD in this training bundle.Garo Green does an excellent job of walking you through the many features of Fireworks. The quick-time movie of the computer screen makes each lesson very easy to follow.I watched the whole thing, and then I go back to each topic I want to learn, watch that topic, and then go and do it.4-0 out of 5 stars great book
this is a greak package in my opinion it goes through the steps of mastering dreamweaver and fireworks very well. apart from giving enough information for the biginer to grasp web design techinques and the basics of how to use the programs there is perfect step by step instructions. I was very confident of using both programs after i was through with the package. The only complaint i have is that it tends to get long winded at times, as it will be for people who have experience with other similar web design tool or html. otherwise it is a fantastic book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Photoshop for the Web Book There Is
This is one of those very rare computer manuals that actually achieves, patiently and systematically, everything it sets out to do.The goal of this book is to teach you the fundamentals of using Photoshop and ImageReady to develop Web content (perhaps that should have been stated on the cover;it's not a book about developing print material).I haven't found another book -- and I have about half a dozen on PS/IR -- that even comes close to explaining such Web basics as optimization, backgrounds, transparent GIFs, image mapping, slicing, and rollovers (I haven't got to the animation part yet) as well. When you get through these tutorials, you will understand not only which buttons to push in order to get the result you want, but why.I was very new to Photoshop when I began this book, but I was able to produce a large-ish Web site thanks to the lessons I learned. One note:if you are buying this book used, make sure that the CD is included -- it contains the exercises on which the book is based.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deep ImageReady
The most comprehensive tutorial you're likely to find covering PhotoShop's "little web sister", leave it to Lynda.com to come up with THE ImageReady book. I researched several books on Photoshop 6 and had trouble finding one that was not either a dull reference book or was geared towards experienced Photoshop users. When I ordered this book, I knew nothing of the basics. Thanks to the many hands-on examples and the breakdown of (what I thought to be) complicated terms, I'm well on my way to being able to use both Imageready and Photoshop without paranoia. If you're just starting out, and have gotten frustrated with other manuals who seem to not take the term 'beginner' seriously, I highly recommend this book. I'm looking forward to using more of the lynda.com books in the future. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Probably out of date.
This attractive book gives good basic guidance for designing sites that draw the user's eye to important elements. However, the state of this art has advanced since 1997, when the book was published. Much of what the book recommends seems to have become conventional wisdom today (2002). Buy this book if you're a novice; otherwise, just move along.

This book is a web design book written especially for graphic designers. In the first five chapters, Pirouz covers some basic concepts ofweb design, focusing more on graphic design issues such as color and white space more than navigation design or design for usability. In the second half of the book, he gives brief overviews of various software packages for creating Web media, such as Flash, Director, and Photoshop.Unfortunately, these software overviews are now dated, so the information in this section is no longer very useful.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
In Amazon.com I could not find the book Adobe Photoshop H.O.T.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Introduction
This is a wonderful introduction to After Effects, a complex application. The author is a born pedagogue and assumes no knowledge of compositing on behalf of the reader. The exercises are excellent, although the detailed re-iteration of each simple task in each lesson can become frustrating, this is a small gripe. You will find your way around this program and its complex interface very easily after reading this book, which is quite an achievement for the author.5-0 out of 5 stars From overwhelmed to confident
As a very experienced Final Cut Pro editor, I realized my need to master Adobe After FX to fill in where FCP can't create what I need it to.I've looked at several books, and for a beginner, this book must be the best. With a very clear illustration, CD exercise files, and explanations for every step, it's hard to get lost in the program with this book by your side.I've almost finished the book in less than two weeks and I am already creating motion graphics that would have blown me away 2 weeks ago.For the beginner that wants to learn ALL the basics, you can't go wrong with this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good, but not complete
The book gives clear step-by step instructions on most Flash 5 functions.4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I attempted to learn Flash 5 first with a dummies book and then a sam's book.Neither compared to this one.The whole hands-on-training series offers just that, a hands-on approach to development. The included tutorial movies were especially useful and were the individual exercises the author had us follow along with.It doesn't cover many advanced topics, like action scripting, but for a beginner just wanting to learn flash, this is a good read.

This first-rate overview of Web design and creation brings together two bestselling and highly regarded members of the Weinman family--Web graphics guru Lynda and her CGI wizard brother William--and encompasses both technical and aesthetic issues. The Weinmans work from the idea that learning how to code your own HTML documents will give you better flexibility and results (not to mention self-gratification); they not only explain "how to," but also "how to do well." 1-0 out of 5 stars errors, errors & more errors...
i'm a teacher (and a very good one...)I know how to teach from scratch2-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book design, good idea, lousy implementation
I would NOT recommend this book for beginners - books for beginners should be almost free of errors, and this one is not. File names and paths in the book don't match those on the accompanying CD, the HTML in the book doesn't match perfectly what is in the files, the referenced sites don't exist anymore. And the book site does not list the corrections. Also, for a book targeted at beginners, many engineering terms are used before they are defined. The chapters on color were particularly difficult, and I think might have been better located later in the book. The book/CD is ok for someone with a technical background who might be able to pick up on the mistakes and get past them. But generally it could have used a good quality assurance pass before it was published, verifying the exercises worked as described and the logic of the sequence of chapters. If that work had been done, then this would be a good, useful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Riddled with errors--inexcusable lack of editing
I bought this book with high hopes of learning to hand-code html but found it to be a complete hindrance. The number of typographical errors is acrime. There are examples of design pitfalls to avoid followed by codeexamples that accomplish exactly what you're told not to do. The codeexamples have very inconsistent syntax and are very confusing forbeginners. There are step by step procedures in Photoshop listing menuoptions in the wrong places and some that simply don't exist. If youalready know the program you might be able to figure it out, but ifnot--you're lost. Though the companion website does list errata, thesloppiness of this book is inexcusable. On top of that, the faded colors ofthe text and graphics make for difficult legibility. All of this makes onewonder about the design skills of this self-professed web guru. ... Read more

I?m a graphic design student, and a recent assignment forced me to design for the web, something I had never done before. when gathering information on web design I came across Lynda?s book at a local bookstore and finally there was a book written by an idiot for idiot?s, it?s very easy to understand and without the jargon that plaques most of the books on the subject.Unlike many computer books it lasts, I can still come back to it many months after I bought it and look up things that I didn?t notice before. It?s filled with useful information and is a MUST-GET for every designer. The only drawback for non-designers is that you?re expected to know your way around professional software like Photoshop and illustrator, but how much can ask from one book?

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must for any questionable dreamweaver novice.
I did not know anything about dreamweaver before I went through this book. The Chapters and lessons are clearly explained and examples are superb. This is one of the best HOT books I've ever bought. I highly recommend it to any dreamweaver novice.

4-0 out of 5 stars this book saved my hide
I unexpectedly got a web freelance job, with short notice and no knowledge of the software. This book very quickly taught me all the basics and let mekeep that job. I think the hands-on aspect made all of the difference. Theproblem with most books is that it's difficult, unless you have a realproject to work on, to really comprehend the book. And if you have a"real project," chances are it's too late to learn everything youneed to know to get the job done. That's why this book is so good, thereare a bunch of pre-created files to work with. Another great thing is thatthe book is not strictly linear--if you skip a chapter that's too basic, the tutorial will still work in the other ones. You won't be punished fornot going through every tedious little step, like in other tutorialbooks.5-0 out of 5 stars dreamweaver 2, hot hands on training

5-0 out of 5 stars A Literal Bible for web designers
I am a full time professional web developer (both visual and web programming) and as far as the visual side goes, this book is a bible.I have never seen a book of such quality in any subject. It explains all the web stuff you need to know, and even some nerdy stuff, like how GIF and JPGcompression works so you can make images that compress very tightly.Isuggest you guy the newest version of this book, v3 since it will haveupdated info like flash probably.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have found this book very useful
I own several of Weinman's books and I find them all very helpful. The most useful part for me is the non-dithering colors by hue charts (she also maintains these online). Even if the colors in the book don't exactly matchwhat comes up on the Web, I can get a close enough match with the hex codesshe provides. Overall I think she produces a very good series. I have tokeep my copies under lock and key at work because they tend to"walk" otherwise. I mention Weinman's books in both of the booksI wrote. That should be good testimony! ... Read more

Editorial Review

This update to Lynda Weinman's highly successful Designing Web Graphics series addresses the new technologies related to Web site design, such as dynamic HTML (DHTML), the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format, and standardized red-green-blue (sRGB). It also discusses the new software programs that help you create and optimize Web graphics, such as Adobe ImageReady and Macromedia Fireworks. Weinman also deals with the old favorites, such as Photoshop and Paintshop Pro, and continues to focus on creating good-looking, compact graphics, as opposed to writing HTML, say, or setting up a server. 3-0 out of 5 stars April 1999?
I would buy this but geepers, it's getting pretty old. The date refers to when it was released, not when it was written, so keep in mind it probably took 6 months to write. I wish they would withdraw some of these books once they got to a certain age and/or make it a bit clearer if and when they have been updated, because a lotta lotta stuff has happened in the last three years. That's an eternity in internet terms. I have to worry that a lot of the stuff in this book is no longer up to date (like web safe colors, fast becoming last year's problem)1-0 out of 5 stars Send Lynda back to school
