5-0 out of 5 stars Good step up for Perl programmers
For Perl programmers looking to make more of the language than just scripting this is the ideal 'step up' book. Object Oriented features of Perl are covered well. Writing and publishing CPAN modules is also covered, as are unit testing concepts.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As Learning Perl
'Learning Perl' by the same authors is one of my favorite books of all time in in the O'Reilly family of books. It's incredibly well written, easy to follow, and it's like having the best instructor you could want teaching you live and in person. As for 'Intermediate Perl', this book is supposed to take regular Perl developers beyond the scripting abilities of the language, allowing them control of much of the power of any other popular and powerful programming language in the development world. While this book has lots of nice material, I find the book to not be as clear, concise, and easy to follow as the precursor to this book.I am certainly no Perl expert, so maybe that is part of the problem, but upon opening this book I had hoped to find a book that was easier to read for any and all programmers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Three years later, Sailors upgrade Perl navigation software
This book updates the 2003 "Perl References, Objects & Modules" from the same authors, which described (in a humorous but also realistic way) a group of "Sailors" writing navigation software.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Microsoft DNS Authority
Simply put, this is the most thorough and complete text on DNS for the Windows Active Directory (Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003) platform; period.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good preemptive strike book
This is the kind of book to read before things go boom, and you end up trying to decode DNS under, shall we say, less than optimal conditions:)
5-0 out of 5 stars Good text on DNS for Win2k3! Much of the same (good stuff)
As in-depth as you will get on DNS for Windows 2003. A recent reviewer stated that it's much of the same. Well, much of it really is; and if you''ve been working with DNS for as long as many of us, nothing about its operations should be new to you. The most significant "tweaks" in DNS in the past few years have been done by Microsoft, to support their AD/200x line - those features are detailed quite specifically in this book (it's what this is all about anyway). And with AD continually evolving, chapters such as Managing DNS Programmatically (with WMI completely in mind) should be of utmost importance for the practicing MS administrator (that is, if you've really read the book!) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for how to code specific situations
Anyone who has been involved in programming very long soon comes to realize the value of the various programming cookbooks. The cookbooks are not for the person who wants to learn how to program in a particular language, but are very useful for programmers with a basic knowledge of the language. The idea is simple, take the most common problems people deal with and put the solutions into a book.Simply state the problem and then show the code to resolve it.So, if you need to know how to do something you can look it up, enter the code, and test it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This is an excellent book-it manages to make itself appropriate for both introductory and experienced Java developers. If you've ever looked at any of the books in O'Reilly's "Cookbook" series, you'll know that the book is organized into "recipes", which illustrate how to accomplish various development tasks in Java.
5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite type of supplemental reference manual...
I make no apologies about being an "R&D" developer... "Rob & Duplicate". I learn best by seeing something that works, and then adapting it to my own needs. Therefore, a book like Java Cookbook by Ian Darwin (O'Reilly) is the exact type of book I look for and use on a regular basis.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a useful reference, pocket or otherwise
This book has a major deficiency as a reference: you can't easily find a specific topic. The book has no index and the table of contents is too high-level to help you find a particular topic (for example, "vi Commands" as a table of contents entry isn't really going to help you locate a particular command).
5-0 out of 5 stars Vi - your answers
Great Vi book for Unix Beginners. It gives great examples to use the command being inquired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Commandline editor guide
This is a handy little book to have around if you use the "vi" text editor and haven't mastered all the commands. Or if you use a different text editor regularly, but find yourself in a place that has only vi. I have about 5 of the O'Reilly Pocket reference books and find them handy reminders for languages, etc. This book is not intended to "teach" a person how to use vi. It is what it says, a "reference" to jog your memory or possibly find how to cut and paste text or one of the numerous functions systems folks wind up doing at times. I do prefer a different editor but vi is ubiquitous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The JUNOS Cookbook is a real joy
Aviva's flair for concise explanation makes this book a real joy. It's rare that I read just one recipe. If you want a concentrated dose of JUNOS that's sweet and easy to swallow, then get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for even JUNOS experts
Even though you've been configuring or operating Juniper routers for long time and you think you are familiar enough with JUNOS, you'll still learn something you don't know from this book; the "Problem/Solution/Discussion/See Also" structure helps to quickly find and read the exact information you need and nothing more, if you don't need to, just like you would use a standard dictionary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
(My review refers to the 2003 edition).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book with excellent examples!
You need a solution to a problem? This book will give you the answer. This is a great reference book that helped me a lot and I think that every PHP programmer should own. This book is the next best thing to searching Google for PHP answers where you can find a wealth of information. The examples are very useful and the flow of the book is perfect. When I bought this book it was expensive but it was worth every single penny.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid and a good resource for PHP coders
I read reviews here on Amazon, and I usually see the "perfect for on your desk reference"... well, I have a shelf near my desk and this book doesn't spend much time collecting dust. There are some really good examples and code, some which may seem overkill (depending on your app and goal).

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the book you need
If you want to understand subversion, this book will take you through all aspects and it will give you the knowledge you need to plan your own implementation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone wanting to install, administer, or learn subversion
let me first point out two of the weak points of the book, and then tell you how great this book is.
4-0 out of 5 stars subversion is the way
If you're doing any concerted development you need version control. And you're using version control, subversion is an excellent way to go - head and shoulders above CVS. O'Reilly makes an excellent foray into this topic. It's not a perfect book, but does give excellent depth of coverage to the subject. As has been discussed, you can download the most recent revisions of the book online for free, which is great, but I personally like to have a book available as I find it easier to get to what I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic tome on Swing is a greatreference
This extremely hefty book on Swing has just about everything in it. However, it is intended to be a reference on Swing, not a tutorial. The problem with the Java Swing API is that it is so large and unwieldy itself that it is difficult to write a complete and useful reference that does not reflect that fact. If you need a good tutorial on Java Swing, you might want to look at the Core Java books by Cornell and read the chapters that apply to Swing. Cornell manages to carve out the basics of writing a Swing application very clearly without getting wrapped around the axle in details you do not need if you are a beginner. Then, come back to this book when you need to write an application to get the details you need. Since everything in Swing is a JavaBean, much of each component's behavior is controlled by a set of properties that are manipulated by accessor methods. Thus, this book has a table for each class that presents the class properties, the data type for each property, the accessor methods, and the default values. In addition, the book has plenty of demonstration code that shows how to use just about all of the various Swing components. The book even has chapters dedicated to changing the look and feel of components and also repainting issues, which loom large in Swing. You can download all of the book's code from the book's website at O'Reilly and Associates. I highly recommend this book to anyone who already knows the bare basics of writing applications with Swing and needs a useful reference. There is no better one out there in publication of which I am aware.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book With a Bad Title
This is for people who have a working knowledge of Swingand who want a comprehensive reference on their desks. I ampreparing for the java Developer exam and thought this would help me get up to speed with Swing. But this is an over kill. Trying to learn Swing with this book is like trying to open a can of Coke with a bulldozer. It would have been more helpful if the Title was something like 'Swing Reference'. If you want to learn some Swing to get some work done very quickly stay away. If you are in the Guru class then go for it. 4 stars because it is indeed a well written reference (Juding from Chapter 1 and 3 and some skimming) But not 5 stars because the Title is misleading

1-0 out of 5 stars yikes!!
I can't recall a tech book so thoroughly unreadable! Maybe if I was more well versed in Swing this might make a little more sense, but seriously....it's great that these folks know all the inheritance lines and can spit them out in eight words or less, but seriously...imagine this as a classroom lecture..anybody awake? anybody still here? well, this class inherits from that or this implemements that interface, and if you look closely, you'll see how this references what we said 47 pages ago (or better yet, what we're gonna say 36 pages down the road!)...all well and good...but we're trying to write real programs and solve real problems....c'mon guys, we're not experts here, else we wouldn't be buying the book!! how about a litle real world usage...I don't have to time to check out the API docs to try and figure out what these guys are yakking about...a major disappointment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful VBScript reference
This is not intended for beginners in scripting or VBScript in particular. But for anyone with even moderate programming or scripting, this may be all you'll need to become familiar with VBScript.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
This is not the book to learn the basics of VBScript, but it's exactly what I needed; a good reference book. I got tired of trying to find syntax of commands and functions online. Now I have it at my fingertips.

5-0 out of 5 stars NUTSHELL
I don't have this book, I've never read it.But the negative reviews for it are out of line.People have reviewed it claiming it isn't for the beginner or for learning VB Script.NO KIDDING!!It is called NUTSHELL for a reason. It is a reference book, NOT a learning book.Don't give bad reviews for a book because you were too stupid to realize you bought the wrong book. That's just as bad as buying a Java book and complaining that it doesn't have any Javascipt examples in it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great pocket reference, 2nd edition WITH INDEX now
This small booklet "ORACLE PL/SQL Language Pocket Reference" in this new 2nd edition is exactly what you need as PL/SQL (PL/SQL is the ORACLE procedural language extension of SQL) programmer (and is even more important for casual PL/SQL programmer).1-0 out of 5 stars anO'REILLY flop
Where's the index??A REFERENCE is something you pick up to find a particular needed peice of information. Without an index you have to scan everywhere trying to find what you are looking for. What a waste of time!Dont' even waste the 10 bucks for this piece of junk...

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Servlets and Java
If you do not understand servlets and program in Java this book is for you.I found it very easy to read and comprehend right off the bat.The examples are excellent and you will get off writing servlets very quickly. It is somewhat shallow in complex examples but then again how complex are servlets. Some best practices and commercial examples could have helped a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth book
I completely agree with the 5-star positive reviews listed here. I saw a couple of new ones that were not so positive, so I wanted to voice my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars very handy
this comes in very handy if you are developing with vb/vba on a daily basis. much quicker than using the mostly confusing and badly organized MSDN online references...

5-0 out of 5 stars The best learning tool for beginners
It's hard to believe that this book was originally published in 1998.I can't think of any VB programmer I've met that did not have one of these on their desk. This book is meant to be used like a dictionary for VB and VBA.The format is brilliant and the concepts in it are as valid today as they were in 1998.
4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great
Well, although there are still many zealous VB 6.0 coders out there, we all know the former language has been superseded by VB.NET, which is basically completely unrelated whatsoever to VB 6.0.

1-0 out of 5 stars Promptly returned ...
In agreement with an earlier reviewer who also gave this book 1-star rating, it took me about 10 minutes of going through this relatively thin book to realize that its contents was not substantive (at all). Too much hand-waving, and not nearly enough meat. And there's barely any C or C++ code in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am curious for the meaning of "advanced users" and what they would enjoy on a "advanced book" and why they despise this book for its basic content, And perhaps, they are after a title like "do my work". I guess much of the material here is very important to embedded developers, being experienced or not. For ex, start up code, the memory initializations and the excellent introduction to a RTOS. I am an Electrical Engineer, always writting embedded application code ( mostly dealing with API calls when it comes to low level ) and I was looking for clarification of several issues and the book did it well. Have a manual for your processor, your compiler and it will be all that you will need. Tips for embedded applications might be easily found on application notes ( be it ARM based processors or AVRs or Freescales ). This book is about writting the software not about the applications them selves.

2-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated
"But keep in mind, it is extremely superficial. In other words, it's a great introduction for people who have no idea whatsoever what embedded development involves." This is a quote from a reviewer that gave it 5 stars. I agree with this reviewer comments but don't buy a book you will outgrow before you finish reading it!For now, I still recommend the David E. Simon book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The single best Apache security book in print
I recently received copies of Apache Security (AS) by Ivan Ristic and Preventing Web Attacks with Apache (PWAWA) by Ryan Barnett.I read AS first, then PWAWA.Both are excellent books, but I expect potential readers want to know which is best for them. The following is a radical simplification, and I could honestly recommend readers buy either (or both) books. If you are more concerned with a methodical, comprehensive approach to securing Apache, choose AS.If you want more information on offensive aspects of Web security, choose PWAWA.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...
This book is worth every single dollar. The examples are very clear and also provide invaluable information about security.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Resource on CSS
I found this book to be helpful in learning some of the basics of CSS.Perhaps, like you, I googled my way around online trying to find solutions to problems that I was encountering.I liked that this book had many of the solutions already written out in the book that I was having problems with.I have been familiar with HTML, but I was late in adding CSS to my websites.I know that there are large benefits with using CSS, and it makes your life eaiser, but I found learning CSS from scratch to be somewhat daunting. From the novice perspective I found this book to be exactly what I needed. There are larger books out there, but I really needed just the basics.
5-0 out of 5 stars CSS Clearly Explained
I highly recommend this book. I am not a specialist in web design, but did have a certification in HTML/XHTML before reading it, so I had some background. Major topics are Web Typography, Page Elements, Links and Navigation, Lists, Forms, Tables, Page Layouts, Print-Friendly functions, Hacks/Workarounds and miscellaneous designing issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference for All Levels of CSS Developer
I've recently had the pleasure of reading CSS Cookbook by Christopher Schmitt, published by O'Reilly (the people who put animal pictures on their tech books - seems silly, but now you know exactly who I mean, don't you?). While I do not recommend it as a beginner's guide to CSS, I recommend it for the bookshelf of current CSS developers, or perhaps if you have a basic knowledge of CSS (maybe you use it control fonts and colors, and that's about it) and would like to implement even more of your design with CSS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, easy steps, wonderful results.
This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.

2-0 out of 5 stars not-so-fast ...
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for a structured reader.
If you are looking for a quick cookbook this should not be your choice. If you want to learn JSP in depth, buy it right now. Hans guides you from the basics to comprehensive details of JSP technology in a very structured way.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great, user guide for JSP
Perhaps this is as good a user guide as is possible for JSP, which is a good, but not great techology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but already dated
Request Tracker (RT) is a great product. I am the only sysadmin at a small company, and having an automated tracking system is going to be an immense benefit for me. I bought "RT Essentials" to help me get up to speed on RT3 really quickly. And, since it was written by the programmer who's responsible for RT, the book had lots of detail and tips.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Software, but Average Book
We've been using RT for several years. As one happy customer mentions at Best Practical's site, managing a project or service driven organization without RT is like watching TV without a TiVo.The software is powerful, flexible, and above all, adaptable to many styles of management for more than just technology projects. No question, the software gets 5 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars QUITE THE TRACKER!!
Are you an end-user, system administrator or developer who interacts with RT on an occasional or regular basis? Authors Jesse Vincent, Robert Spier, Dave Rolsky, Darren Chamberlain and Richard Foley, have written an outstanding book that is for everybody who has to use RT to manage tasks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Second VB Book
I have been through many VB books including expensive college texts.I immediately found this to be the best one.I picked it up at a Borders (oops...) because I was sick of ordering books online and not liking them when I finally got them in the mail. After I read the first chapter in the book store, I didn't want to wait to get started so I paid the $40.
1-0 out of 5 stars Jesse Liberty Fails to Update the Errata
After spending many hours trying to figure why the sample code didn't work, I found the answer buried on Jesse Liberty's message board.A fellow reader points out an error on Jan 21 and as of June 26 Jesse has yet to update his errata. Most tech books have a decent size errata and that is to be expected, but for an author to fail in his responsibility at the cost of many collective hours by his readers is extremely inconsiderate. This book is in my trash can at the moment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a complete transition to VB.Net
I absolutely love Jesse's books and articles. However, this book does not have a page dedicated to ADO.Net nor does Jesse talk about the debugging methods of VS 2005.
