The perfect book for beginners
The book is clear, concise and comprehensive. It covers from how toget a domain name to how to accept credit card payments.I like the emphasis in formating using CSS instead html. This was a new concept for me. The author introduces java scripts and dynamic html. I missed a chapter about how to organize, and keep update the whole web site (sometimes with hundreds of web pages, pictures, icons, etc...). It was one of my first book about the topic and I really think that it's a powefull introductory book.

An enjoyable walk through the essential steps in web site creation.

bad book, too much nonsense
full of nonsense in whole book.
The book is exactly right for an introduction.
I am amplifying a prior review (Daniel McKinnon's) in order to balance a misperception as to the intent and execution of the book.
who is this book intended for?
Most O'reilly books are praised for describing computer programming concepts in a very readable way for an educated audience. Although, Erik Ray's book is engaging enough, he has left out so much detail in the language definitions and real examples that, after reading this book, it is not possible for even an experienced programmer to actually use the material. For example, the book explains the definition of schemas (without enough detail) but how do I use a schema in a project? The intended audience for this book appears to be people who already use xml that want a refresher at an elementary level. Very disappointing. ... Read more

Still quite relevant for Sybase developers
Although there aren't too many Sybase databases anymore, quite a few firms (esp. in Finance) have them and if you find yourself working with Sybase I strongly recommend this book. It's been a great. The sections on Error handling (Ch.9), transactions and locking (Ch.11) and built-in Functions (Ch.12) have been invaluable over the years.
Good resource for T-SQL information
I purchased my copy back in 1999 and it is one of my favorite SQL books.I find the information very accurate and relevant to the MS SQL versions (6.5 & 7.0) printed on the cover of the book.I think it was the best SQL book for many years.Since 1999, many books for newer versions of database servers have been published.
Good book with easy-to-find answers to your questions
Judging from the other reviews here, people either love this book or they hate it.I love it.This book has proved invaluable to me over the years, and I still reference it on occassion.Whenever I have a question about something, the answer is easy to find.It *is* out of date, as other reviewers have noted, but the majority of information contained within is still valid.

Network Security Assessment
explainsa variety of exploits and tells you how to harden your network. This book is very well researched and extremely well written and is reader friendly, as some security books leave the reader lost in techno babble, not this book however very easy reading it now sits on my desk as a ready reckoner.

Very good book for security policy enablers and admins
This is one of the few books that I have come across that focuses mainly on the innards of security assessments. The services based security and counter measures are helpful for threat modeling. This book is really great for people in the security risk and threat analysis for a quantitative and qualitative validation. Good book to help in setting up corporate security policy model.
Good Methodology and Specifics
I've read a heck of a lot of books on security assessments.Some turn into hacking manuals, others turn into windy documents on documenting the process and why each piece of the process is important.

Guides this good are extremely rare
This guide will pay for itself many times over.If you are considering a caching server for home, office or business you need this book.
This book is awesome!!!
For the new comer I recommend to buy this book if your finding an alternative for Microsoft box like ISA or MSProxy 2.0.
"The" book for Squid
Squid: The Definitive Guide by Duane Wessels is a great book for someone with aspirations of setting up and getting the most out of Squid. It is lengthy at just over 400 pages, but that is to be expected and desired in O'Reilly's "The Definitive Guide" series. One point worth mentioning is that Duane Wessels (the author, for those with short synaptic cycles) is the one who started Squid and still works on it today. Each chapter builds nicely on subsequent chapters, so there isn't any skipping around. If you're just looking to set it and forget it, this book is probably not for you. Otherwise, read on. Valuable content from all perspectives
I've read both this and the ExtremeTech "Hacking Google Maps," and both have their place, but I found this one to be much more valuable.

Great new to intermediate level book
The Running Linux book is expanded and updated regularly and is designed to bring the casual and new user up to speed with using Linux as well as updated information.This is all done is a distribution-neutral context which makes it one of the better guides available.Of course that also presents problems when a particular distribution does something a little bit different from the norm.If you are a serious Linux enthusiast and have been for some time you will find the book too elementary for your needs but those new to Linux will find it a great introduction.The one real problem that I have with the book is that at times leaves out too much detail and as a result you can't really understand how to use something.An example is the entire section on MySQL and PHP.Then again, there are many excellent books available on these subjects and this is still more of an introductory guide so letting the reader know what can be done and then letting them seek out an appropriate text for the details is appropriate.Not to mention if it included all the details on all the subjects discussed then this would be a multi-volume work.
Authors are so smart, they're dumb
This book is pitched, at least in part, to Linux beginners. But it fails in small, maddening ways when speaking to this audience. After a lot of discussion of disk partitioning and install, page 65 tells you to run the "man" command in a shell session. It offers no clue that the only way to terminate a "man" command is the letter Q - a completely unintuitive action. So a new user can flounder forever, or at least until they get frustrated and reboot. But I don't mean to slam just this book. That same problem exists in most other beginning Linux books, even O'Reilly's pocket guide. All these knowledgeable authors seem to think that noephytes will somehow magically gain access to information that the authors have in their heads, but haven't committed to paper.

Far better than any other book on this topic
This book is miles ahead of other Java gaming books...For one thing, this is an excellent book in its own right.For another, the other existing books on the topic suck.
Somewhat Disappointed - But hopeful for a second edition
This is the first time I've been disappointed by a book published by O'Reilly. There are, in my opinion, quite a few things wrong with this book. I'll mention a few.

I went through a few books on java game programming before I got this one and I must say that by fair its the best.I have a few years experience with java and wanted to make a few games for fun and this book gave me all the information I needed to get started.

Excellent text well written and logical sequencing of chapters.
Solves a lot of problems! (That's how it's organized)
I had a recent perl+mysql project and flipped between the Cookbook and the author's other work, MySQL, mentioned in other reviews.( also referred to the O'Reilly Perl books _Programming Perl_ and _Perl for System Administration_.I don't usually have time to master any topic or skillset; I need to get in, get it going, and move on.This book is perfect for that."How do I get the date?"There's a recipe for that."How do I get perl to connect to the database and insert stuff?" There's a recipe.Also for PHP, python, etc.It's really focused on problem solving, and the problems are really well chosen.This book will save you hours of effort.

the best C++ book I have read
This is the first time I am actually writing a review for a book, coz I find this book the best I have ever read for C++ programming. It serves great for sophomore level C++ programming class at my univ. and otherwise as a great book to have on your reference shelf too. It starts with an intro to setting up your programming enivroment in .NET and Borland enviroment. After that it delves into programming styles and techniques in general and then goes C++ fulltime. The chapters about pointers,advanced pointers and the debugging/optimisationare some of the best readings I have ever done on the respective topics. Throughout the book the material stays relevant to the title of the book and thus is a great reading for anyone who is making transition from java to c++ or from a beginner C++ programmer to advanced level.The book is great reading for strengthening C++ concepts. If you look through the contents of the book you might notice the only thing that the book lacks is a chapter on data structures. However dont let that fool you. You will be in a better position to perform pointer manipulation on your linked lists and trees after reading advanced pointers chapter in this book, than any other book that just has the code for the entire implementation printed. Besides the book is about letting you loose to do it yourself (rather than hand feeding you) which I believe is what programming books are about.The book has something about almost everythingin C++ and lot more like using the gnu debugger .Highly recommended for anyone who wants to have a strong conceptual knowledge of C++.

Good, but errors and lack of depth detract
Overall, the book offers a balanced and well-presented introduction to C++. However, there are too many typos and mistakes for a programming text. O'Reilly needs to kick their editing team into gear. In addition, many topics could and should be explained more in-depth. As is, many topics are only lightly touched on and more of the nuts and bolts of the language (i.e. characteristics that really lead to a quality understanding) are omitted.

Among the best books on Excel VBA
"Writing Excel Macros with VBA" is an excellent book on the use of VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) for Microsoft Excel.Steven Roman provides a significant amount of information in a relatively short volume.
Good Reference
This is a very specialized book with a very specialized core audience and this text does what it says it does -- teach you how to write Excel Macros using VBA.Nothing too exciting here folks, very dry reading that is a necessary reference if you need to have more control over Excel than the everyday user does.
Mr Roman's book is very good value.
Mr Roman is an extremely competent and clear writer. This book, whilst not as big as some, doesn't waste space with any padding, and boring repititious stuff you see in some texts.

Not a Mind Meld
To me a great book flows into your mind, magically providing the information in the order you need it.Of course it depends on whose reading it, but this book, though well worth the 96 cents bargain bin price I paid for it, does not build the constructs in my head the way I'd like.
Very good guide to an old but useful programming tool
Yacc (yet another compiler compiler) and its companion lex (lexical analyzer) are primarily intended to allow quick and easy development of small special-purpose languages. The common mistake is assuming that they are only useful for creating compilers for massively complex eccentric languages. This is not the case, though you could no doubt use them for such a purpose.
Delivers what is say it will
This book is a little out-dated. That is fine, though - this book goes over all the essential proponents of Lex and Yacc and Bison and FLEX and all the other variations ... which you will certainly know a lot more about by the end of this book. This books enabled me to read FLEX input from a c-string, which has played a role in a few of my projects. It is great when you just need a quick reminder of the syntax is the tools. This book does not go over how the programs work, which is a good thing, because that would make the book more oriented towards Finite Autonoma and Context Sensive Languages - leave that sort of thing to autonoma theory and compiler design. This is an excellent reference, so buy it if you really need it. ... Read more

Fantastic Desktop Reference
Visual Basic 2005 In A Nutshell is a wonderful companion reference for any and all VB developers.With the new features in the 2005 version of VB, this guide is a great book to have by your side when you are working on your latest Visual Basic application.
Clear and concise with great examples
This is a fantastic reference book for VB prorgrammers. The examples are great. They aren't too long and get right to the point of what they are trying to illustrate. The organization is perfect and the writing is crisp.
A Very Good Book
I've always missed the printed help manuals that used to come with development tools.I used to carry them around with me and browse through them whenever I had a bit of time.So I was happy to read this book, which has a nice big PRINTED reference section.There are several sections that cover various topics such as object orientation, data types, delegates & events, operators, and so on.The book also covers the new features of Visual Basic 2005, such as operator overloading and generics.My favorite part is the section on the My namespace. Cool stuff.
