5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bookbut get the new edition
This Cookbook is the best selling of the Active Directory books. But you should know that there is a new Second Edition simply called Active Directory Cookbook that was revised by Joe Richards, the MVP and it has a lot of good stuff on topics like ADAM and updates for SP2.So get that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book is a great resource covering a wide variety of interactions with Active Directory.Whether you are new or experienced with AD, this book is an invaluable tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book payed for itself right away
Loaded with examples for real-world use.I was able to quickly grab a few script examples for a project I'm working on thus saving lots of time and and giving me confidence I had the right code at hand.Nice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, we even use it at Microsoft ...
I am working on a commercial XML application at Microsoft that is heavily leveraging WPF and pretty much all of the devs on my project that are developing in WPF have this book sitting open on their desks right now.It is a really great, easy to read and understandable book. You still need the detailed documentation on MSDN when you want to see all of the API details but if you want a logical, understandable walk throught WPF this is the book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Out Of Date
While Avalon aka Windows Presentation Framework is still in beta, I had hoped that the code examples and references in this book would not be far out of date.I am finding that they are dramatically out of date (writing this review 04/27/2006).This is not to criticize the quality of the book or of the content; it appears to be well written. However, it was written in September 2005, and there has been at least 3 new beta releases of the framework since then.About 1/2 of the examples I have tried will not even compile, or have bad runtime errors.
5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough grounding
The nascent WinFX API, of which Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is a part, is one of the most exciting developments in Windows programming in years. Though the technology is still in beta (it is slated to ship with Windows Vista in late 2006 or early 2007), it can be used to build working applications now, in either the Vista beta or Windows XP with Service Pack 2, allowing the adventurous developer to get a jump start in the technology that will drive Windows development for the next decade.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Microsoft DNS Authority
Simply put, this is the most thorough and complete text on DNS for the Windows Active Directory (Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003) platform; period.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good preemptive strike book
This is the kind of book to read before things go boom, and you end up trying to decode DNS under, shall we say, less than optimal conditions:)
5-0 out of 5 stars Good text on DNS for Win2k3! Much of the same (good stuff)
As in-depth as you will get on DNS for Windows 2003. A recent reviewer stated that it's much of the same. Well, much of it really is; and if you''ve been working with DNS for as long as many of us, nothing about its operations should be new to you. The most significant "tweaks" in DNS in the past few years have been done by Microsoft, to support their AD/200x line - those features are detailed quite specifically in this book (it's what this is all about anyway). And with AD continually evolving, chapters such as Managing DNS Programmatically (with WMI completely in mind) should be of utmost importance for the practicing MS administrator (that is, if you've really read the book!) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's an OK book
The people are right that this book could have been much less thick if it wasn't for the examples. Personally, I thought they were useful. Keep in mind that they have complete examples in both C# and VB.NET, and all that code wastes a lot of space.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Little Practical Information
Over 70 Percent of this book is code listings (much of it auto generated) that is available in the sample code. Why generate your own database when pubs and northwind provide adequate examples. If you want to learn how to design a database there are ample books out there that are quite good. Most of the examples have very little real world application. As an example of practical concise real world examples look at "Building Web Solutions" by Esposito. He provides four times the useful information in 350 pages that this book provides in 1200.Look elswhere if you want good insight and practical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete! Well Documented! Superb!
I found myself searching for a book that covered the TreeView control and others in great detail. I needed a book that would give detailed examples of how to use the advanced features of Windows Forms Controls and this was it. I use C# but appreciate the fact that both the VB.Net and C# codes is included as I never know if I will be asked to work on a VB.Net project. I have several other C# books that documented the basics of how to program C#, but this is the first that really showed me how to use the power of Win Forms to build a user friendly UI. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a beginner to intermediate system administrator? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Jonathan Hassell, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows you how Windows Server 2003 and its follow-up release, R2, works and the different ways to administer machines running that operating system.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
I have given this book a 4 star rating as a geek friend who helped me set up my business server read it and said it was pretty good. I am an experienced applications programmer with substantial knowledge of networks and the practicalities of server services. I incorrectly thought this book would almost be like a step-by-step for setting up your own server. The description is correct, each chapter does explain in brief detail what that feature is and then goes into detail of how to set it up. HOWEVER at no point does it explain why you would need the feature or what the acronyms used mean or what is achieved after you add that feature. Personally if you already know about servers, understand the terminology and acronyms and have set up many servers before then my geek friend advises this is a great book. If you are a geek but know little about server terminology and are looking for a step by step book on how to set up a server starting with Server 2003 forget it. If you are not a geek you will be unable to read this book at all, it lost me after only a few paragraphs on every chapter. I gave this book away to my friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Clear, Concise, Yet Comprehensive
The new 2nd edition of this book has been completely updated for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and release R2, and information on administration using command-line utilities has been added to each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for AD support folks.
I use this book and also the author's AD cookbook daily to help with supporting our global Active Directory server infrastructure. This is an absolutely indispensable reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful to admins / IT support
We're a software engineering company, and I maintain our internal servers (6-7 servers) as well as provide customer support on our products. A lot of that involves asking for information from the customer - and this book helps in putting together scripts that I can send out that will send back information to us that avoids us asking to exchange 5 emails to get the same result. Anything that saves my time - and our customers time - is worthy of purchasing. Well done, well organised book - and the author returns emails!

4-0 out of 5 stars Start here, it is all here!
This book has a sound foundation for managing a windows 2003 server. The chapters are logically organized. I used some of the examples in the book to migrate some file shares in my network from unix to windows, the book was there for the rescue (the fact that the author has a solid windows/unix experience makes this book even more attractive). The solutions in this book include windows scripting,an area that is seldom talked about in windows literature. If you are serious about managing a windows 2003 server competently then you want to have this book in your arsenal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This one isn't like the others...
Databinding is handled later, and lots of interesting stuff I wasn't knowledgeable about came sooner.Bravo.This is a great book that will always be on my desk!(I'm a professional developer with walls of books by Microsoft on Wrox, primarily.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for any WinForms .NET Developer
This was the 3rd or 4th WinForms book I purchased. The others were good, but they were lacking in detail. This book does a great job in explaining 'under the cover' details. The authors do a good job explaining DataBinding, Controls, GDI+, Form, Menus, Inheritance and much more. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for WinForms developers

5-0 out of 5 stars Down with the mouse, long live Monad
The only problem I have with this bookis the toad on the front cover. This is what other shell books should be, this is what other shells should be.Highly recommended for the Windows administrator.

4-0 out of 5 stars equivalent to a unix shell
Monad is not so different from the various unix shells. Microsoft seems to have taken the ideas from those and put together a credible new shell. Functionally, it will appeal to those sysadmin types who prefer to quickly put together an interpreter based solution to a problem.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Considering that MONAD is a new shell and not many books are available in the market this book is a great introduction to MONAD. The author introduces the functionality with examples and he gives us details on how to learn more about the new features.

Are you ready to take on Windows Server 2003 without a 1,500 page tome? This is the book; it has more Windows Server 2003 information per cubic inch than any other.
5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference
Mitch Tulloch's "Windows Server 2003 in a Nutshell" has 5 main sections. (1) A brief section on upgrading from NT or 2000 to W2003. (2) A brief section on changes from W2000 to W2003. (3) A small section outlining common administrative tasks (often referencing other areas of the book). (4) A "GUI reference" which is an alphabetical reference to the features and functions of W2003. (5) A command line reference. The last two sections occupy the majority of the book.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Won't improve your skills much
I bought the book even after reading previous reviews. Oh well.If you have any knowledge of Windows and it's functionality and want to improve on those skills, this book won't do it.It's all about tools and utilities you can download or purchase, and how to use those programs. Not much insite into Windows built in tools and better ways of using them.I did think the host files and DNS section could be helpful, but as a previous poster said, you can find tips like that on the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars must have for XP users
This book kicks serious a**. Any medium to high power user must have this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
This isn't a book for anybody just learning how to use a computer. If you know your stuff then this book can be very helpful in getting the most out of your Windows XP Operating System. If an individual is in the market for a computer and reading this review I HIGHLY recommend that you get a computer without a Windows OS. This is especially true if you plan on doing online banking and/or shopping. Windows is the WORST OS system out there when it comes to security. I have an old e-machine, that has windows xp, which I use every now and then. That is why I own this book, but I also own a Mac. Purchase a Mac or if you really want to get serious, get something based on Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for 'Dummies'...
This is a great book for someone like myself who doesn't need a intro level book explaining how to open folders and send E-mail but is not an XP expert. The chapters on editing the registry and debugging local networks are worth the price of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Revised for Service Pack 2 -- Packs a Punch to Windows XP
Users of Microsoft Windows XP often want to push the OS to its limits.Unfortunately, out of the shrink-wrap XP doesn't offer much in the way of tweaks, nor does it fully expose the power that lays underneath its graphical interface. In this revised Windows XP Hacks book from O'Reilly, you will find a wealth of information on how to tune and trick-out Windows XP (with and without SP2) and take the OS to new levels of power and performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Net Admin Book
Oh my, this book is just incredible. It is the most comprehensive book I found covering many advanced networking technologies including routing and firewalls. One thing so cool is able to understand comparatively the firewall features of routing and NAT functionality of RRAS, IPSec filters, TCP/IP filtering, ICF, and Windows Firewall.I wasn't able to find such material in any other books.

Do you need to configure a network service on a Windows server? If you do, then this book is for you! Authors Craig Hunt and Roberta Bragg, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that provides practical, detailed network information for the Windows system administrator.
5-0 out of 5 stars Revised, expanded edition addresses numerous networks

Editorial Review

Writing kernel-mode Windows NT programs--such as file-system drivers (FSDs), filter drivers, and antivirus programs--poses a challenge to even experienced Windows programmers. It's hard enough to get these programs to work, but getting them to live peacefully with other kernel programs and NT itself is an art. Nagar sorts through the mechanics of writing such programs in this book, which is no mean feat considering that Microsoft provides no documentation for its development kit. The author begins by orienting the reader to NT's kernel mode, detailing what runs there, how the various programs interact, and what you need to keep in mind when developing software for the kernel mode.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Available to order from OSR Press
NOW AVAILABLE: Reprint of Windows NT File Systems Internals
5-0 out of 5 stars Very unique but has to be read with other recent materials.
This book is by far, one of my most favorite books. It has been the only complete text book that explains the details of the Windows NT File Systems Framework. If you are to buy the book these days you would not feel the value of the book as I felt it when I started reading it six years ago. Nowadays, there are some other literatures that provides deeper coverage for certain topics like the OSR materials and the first IFS conference (both are available as part of the IFS kit). But still, the book remains the only complete reference. To get most of the benefits of this book, it is better that you look at the FASTFAT source code that comes with the IFS kit. The main drawback of the book is the lack of deep coverage for network based file system drivers. OSR materials provided with the IFS kit are essential to have better knowledge about File System FILTER drivers. Read the book while watching the videos of the first IFS kit conference, this will help a lot. Finally, if you are new to file system drivers then, be more patient while reading the book. You would not get everything from the first reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info, but much repeating
This is certainy a must have for any Windows 32-bit file system developer. It reveals great secrets, make sense of the NT IFS chaos, and make Your IFS nightmares go away. It's a great book, but much of it is presented in mostothers, and that's the only bad thing )like memory managment, cachemamaneretc.). Thanks, RN. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Linux/Windows Integration Reference
This book did not favor any one Linux OS over another (good). Most Linux configuration was via commandline (which most will advocate in a Unix environment) and direct editing of conf files. Each chapter has a great balance of common practices, breaking down the common config parameters, then implementing.Overall, a great reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars NetBIOS? I say again NetBIOS?!?
Working several years as a certified Windows Administrator, I find it strange to have a complete chapter soley dedicated to the topic of NetBIOS.Who uses NetBIOS?I looked further into the book, and the all SAMBA material seems to be a rehash older and overdocumented SAMBA 2.0 docs...
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This is a very good book on the topic. The author knows what he is talking about, he doesn't skip anything and explains almost everything that should be explained. Although there are some typos and small errors in the book, they are corrected in the errata. Accessible, thorough, well written, well organized, well supported. Definitely worth the money. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars decent coverage of Windows 2003 security but not up to the O'Reilly standards
This book is mediocre. It covers all security related topics with regard to Windows Server 2003. I wish some sections had more details. It seems like the author was thumbing through Microsoft technical reference materials and paraphrasing with "Ok so do step 1, then do step 2, then step 3." To this I ask, Well Ok but what is the purpose of step 2? Are there alternatives? What are the pros and cons of step 2? So I guess you could say many areas of this book left we wanting additional details. It did NOT seem like the author had worked through all of these scenarios in a realworld environment (like Mark Minasai).
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful Insights
Actually it is true, a lot of the book is a rehash of common Windows security practices that is way overdocumented, e.g. how many times must we redocument the simple tool Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. However, interspersed between the rehashed material are useful insights.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good General Guide
I find this book overall well written and a lot of the advice practical. This book tends to be more wordy on the discussion, but does have some excellent nuts-n-bolts practical side. Overall, I think this is a useful guide to most people, but I found that much of the information to be too general, at least those familiar with practical experience or those studying MSCE certification material: GPOs, security templates, MSBSA, SUS, IPSec, IAS, VPN, etc. So at least for me, or others going through books for certification studies, a lot of the material is redundant and offers little in the way of new insights.

4-0 out of 5 stars good stuff
good stuff.could have been more advanced.questionable organization (much like windows itself.)still, the tips and tricks picked up more than paid for the volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for anyone living with/supporting/rolling out Windows XP
Windows XP is a fact of life for most of us.The sad fact of the matter is that Windows is bloated and sick - loaded with performance/security/stability robbing settings and "extras".Karp's excellent volume - simple enough for the layman but deeply valuable even for the experienced lays out how to pare down XP to fighting form. You can't change XP's basic nature - but you can improve matters significantly.Windows XP Annoyances for Geeks is well organized (like all O'Reilly books) and full of practical, real-world tips.If you must support or roll out XP in a corporate environment, then this book becomes essential to your survival (or at least your sanity). Is it the last word?Probably not - but you will not actually read or use much more than you get here.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gives you a less annoying XP
Isn't that a neat picture on the cover? Certainly grabs one's attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure
Read the negative reveiws and bought the book anyway.Still can't figure out what it was that other reviewers found objectionable...
5-0 out of 5 stars A desktop must SQL SERVER 2000 and Transact SQL
I cannot say enough great things about this book!I'm a SQL Server developer and have used many forms of the logic presented from this book in many of my daily routines. This is my first review and my inspiration was to oppose all negative or irrational comments made in some of the previous reviews. Are you sure you read the "T-SQL Cookbook" by OReilly's?Might be a little too advanced for some, I can see that in your reveiw. How is it not in depth?Because it is not for beginners? It has thousands of sollutions to everyday problems.BUY THIS BOOK FOR A GREAT REPORT WRITING TOOL, DEVELPOR HANDBOOK OR WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO DO IN SQL SERVER 2000!!!!!!!!!

Editorial Review

Microsoft Windows XP may be the latest in a popular family of operating systems, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. However, the designers of Windows XP have built enough flexibility into their product and provided users with a sufficiently large toolkit to overcome most shortcomings. In Read more
