3-0 out of 5 stars Handy Portable Reference
This is not a learning text by any stretch of the imagination.Covering the basic implementation of Regular Expressions in Perl, Java, .NET, C#, Python, PCRE, PHP, vi Editor, JavaScript, and a few shell utilities, this title is well suited as a quick "cheat sheet" for those already familiar, often providing the required information in just the "Supported Metacharacters" section.
3-0 out of 5 stars great book, but...
This is a great handy reference to compare several popular tools supporting regrex.
4-0 out of 5 stars A review of "Regular Expression Pocket Reference"
One of the most difficult things when working with regular expressoins -- at least for me -- is dealing with different implementations (i.e., Perl, Java, Python, PHP, UNIX tools, etc.)The basics of regexes and pattern matching don't vary all that much, but each implementation is just different enough that the smae line of code can yield different results. If you work with more than one of these implementations, keeping track of differences in metacharacters and metasequences can be nearly impossible. This is especially true when -- as is the case with me -- you deal with regexes somewhat intermittently.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction and reference resource
This is a useful introduction to the Bash shell used in unix, linux, and other *nix type operating systems. It takes you from a very basic introduction into deeper concepts including shell scripting and customization. Highly recommended for the niche market it is intended to reach. I found it clear, useful and detailed without being dull.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential linux skills.
This book (2nd. ed.) shows how bash shell programming exploits special capabilities of linux and unix. Shell programming manages other, more specialized, programs. So understanding the shell is essential to fully exploiting multitasking environments like linux.
4-0 out of 5 stars simple subject

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, we even use it at Microsoft ...
I am working on a commercial XML application at Microsoft that is heavily leveraging WPF and pretty much all of the devs on my project that are developing in WPF have this book sitting open on their desks right now.It is a really great, easy to read and understandable book. You still need the detailed documentation on MSDN when you want to see all of the API details but if you want a logical, understandable walk throught WPF this is the book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Out Of Date
While Avalon aka Windows Presentation Framework is still in beta, I had hoped that the code examples and references in this book would not be far out of date.I am finding that they are dramatically out of date (writing this review 04/27/2006).This is not to criticize the quality of the book or of the content; it appears to be well written. However, it was written in September 2005, and there has been at least 3 new beta releases of the framework since then.About 1/2 of the examples I have tried will not even compile, or have bad runtime errors.
5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough grounding
The nascent WinFX API, of which Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is a part, is one of the most exciting developments in Windows programming in years. Though the technology is still in beta (it is slated to ship with Windows Vista in late 2006 or early 2007), it can be used to build working applications now, in either the Vista beta or Windows XP with Service Pack 2, allowing the adventurous developer to get a jump start in the technology that will drive Windows development for the next decade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Use When Writing an SSL app.
If you have little or no experience with SSL, or OpenSSL, get this book. It explains the principles behind SSL, and then goes on to cover OpenSSL. The companion website opensslbook.com contains the latest examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars openssl programming cleanly explained
The book starts with a general introduction of encryption in general, then SSL protocol in general. Then openssl command line interface is introduced with some easy to follow examples. Later openssl programming is explained in detail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction, a little code heavy
This is a nice introduction, reasonably well written, introduction to using Windows automation through VBScript. About a third of the book acts as an introduction to the basics of VBScript for use in this context. He covers basics like variables, conditionals, functions, error handling, and more. The other two thirds of the book covers a variety of topics like shell extensions, ASP, XML, active directory and more. This is up-to-date stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not to basic for this administrator
Was Joseph DeMarco (previous review) reading the same book? The book has several chapters on AD scripting, and they showed me how to create users, delete them, create OUs, and more. The book has THIRTEEN chapters on learning VBScript, which I didn't know and now I finally do. They're clearly written and they're not super-deep, so I got through them quickly. If you're a professional developer, this book isn't for you. If you're a systems administrator, I can't see how this book wouldn't be helpful.1-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic for System Administrators
I bought this book based on other customers' reviews. The book talks very generally about scripting for Active Directory. The book contains the word "VBScript", as well as "Managing Windows". However, it covers very little about the in's & out's of what it possible. The sections on ADSI are watered down and virtually useless. The script examples are simple, and aren't thorough at all. I found more information on Microsoft's web site. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Edition is outstanding as a tutorial and as a reference
I owned the first edition of this book, and although somewhat confusing, I was able to learn VBScript from it with some time and patience. Thus, I just expected the second edition to be an update of the first. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the second edition had been greatly improved. There are clearer and more frequent examples, the text is an easier read, and there are frequent and illuminating illustrations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for starters
I bought this book, as I wanted to write some simple VBScripts to help automating some laborious manual process for my job. This book is so easy to browse through and as I already have some knowledge of VB Programming and so I can easily browse through the chapters. Even for a beginner this is a good book to start with. I could start writing the scripts I wanted for my job and I like this book so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, be sure to buy the 2nd Edition
This is an outstanding book.At first I was confused by some of the older reviews, until I realized that Amazon is still selling the old 1st edition, and many folks are buying that one instead of the newer, much better Second Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Linux networking software book to start with
I have read a number of books on the TCP/IP protocols and their implementations; both the original Berkeley (BSD) Unix TCP/IP stack and the Linux TCP/IP stack.I must say that this is the best of all of them. This book makes the subject very approachable for the newcomer to network protocol software but the explanations are detailed enough to satisfy an old dog like me.Benvenuti's writing style is clear and very readable. He liberally provides diagrams to illustrate the concepts he is discussing.
5-0 out of 5 stars TAKE THE LINUX NETWORK TOUR!
Are you a newcomer who already has some knowledge of networking? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Christian Benvenuti, has done an outstanding job of writing practical guide that represents a good starting point for anyone willing to learn more about the Linux kernal internals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Work of Genius
I have withdrawn my earlier review because I did not properly understand the importance of this book until the second reading. That is a difficult admission to make since my business is database performance tuning.
5-0 out of 5 stars The first real SQL Tuning method.
I have worked with Oracle databases and SQL tuning since 1987, and the reason I recommend Dan's book so highly to anyone working with SQL is that his method is the first real method I've seen in this field. There are many approaches out there, but they all fall into the Guess & Grimacing or Checklist categories. Dan's is a REAL method, and it works for all SQL-based databases. It's so far the only SQL tuning book I can recommend. Any DBA, developer and troubleshooter working with database-centric systems should know this stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars The lowdown on Perforce and all dimensions of SCM
Perforce is billed as the "quick Software Configuration Management ... written by developers for developers". What I like about this book is that it both suitable for beginners and experienced Perforce users. Even ifyour are not a Perforce use, I still recommend reading the chapters on source code management (mainlines and software evolution), as they contain some excellent descriptions and universal principles.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a programmer, a project manager, or a build engineer involved with software development? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Laura Wingerd, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that presents Perforce's potential as a software configuration management tool.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Perforce Companion Text
'Practical Perforce' by Laura Wingerd is a nice companion manual for all Perforce administrators. For anyone that doesn't know what Perforce is, in short it is a SCM (Source Control Management) tool much like CVS, Visual Sourcesafe, Rational Clearcase, Accurev, etc).Like most SCM software out there, documentation is sparse and can be confusing at time for any release engineer to navigate through, so this is a welcome text to have by your side.

2-0 out of 5 stars stuck at chapter 7
I bought an O'Reilly book to teach myself perl & it was great. I'm writing a review about this one because I'm frustrated. The first six chapters go by like a breeze for folks familiar with other programming languages (I use perl, mel, c, html, studio). well, that's not entirely true. I couldn't get my apache server to execute any of my php code (I'm on a new mac mini). I followed all the instructions in appendix A to no avail. Finally, I just uploaded my php scripts to a webserver & my code worked there. but that's super annoying because I have to upload my php file every time I want to test it (& sometimes my internet connection is slow). whatever. anyway: when I got to chapter 7 none of the examples worked anymore & it is extremely vague exactly how you're supposed to run some commands. for example: if you want to set up a database, you run the following command only one time:
1-0 out of 5 stars It's not good when a book for beginners has bugs in the code.
I'm sorry, but this book is just down right lousy. It was the very first book I ever picked up to teach me PHP. Back then, I had assumed that all books on technical matters would be as close to perfect as one could get. However, as I typed away at my initial pages, nothing was working right. There was constant errors. As a beginner, this is quite frustrating, because you just have no idea as to what you could be doing wrong. Well...as I looked online in the errata section for the book, there was so much information as to the corrections to the code, that I might as well have gone to the Errata section for free rather than waste my time and money. Now, with more experience, the bugs are so bluntly obvious as to what was wrong. Not like a typo, or a group of text missing. But I mean, obvious very "simplistic" code that was...just the wrong code. And this isn't very professional to have code that obvious be printed. It shows that it wasn't tested.
4-0 out of 5 stars I liked...
Well written and organized. One thing I should mention is that there is a lot of hand holding as the book is really made for beginners. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Material, Not as Good Training Book
I was looking for a training book that would help me quickly understand ASP.NET 2.0 with VB.NET 2005 for my company's upcoming web application projects. While this book for the most part has helped provide me with the basic skills I need and does act as a good reference tool to refer back to while developing, I wish the training was as thorough as most Murach books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
One of the most thorough and useful beginner's guides to VS2005 that I've seen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Training, Barely for Reference
This book is not sure who it is intended for. It states it is for Training and Reference. It is not a training book and as a refence book it leaves much to be desired. If you know anything about ASP.NET the first 300 pages will bore you (so will most of the rest of the book). Whether you know ASP.NET or not parts of the last 200 pages assume you are an expert and even states topics the author raises won't be covered since it is assumed you are already familar. Leaves you wondering who the book is really for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book that is Ready for an Update
This is a great reference for anyone who supports Cisco routers, BUT...some of the sections are out of date, for example, the section on QOS.Also, a section that needs to be added is MPLS.I would buy a new version just for these two enhancements!Hopefully it is being updated right now and we'll see a new printing this year!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Reference guide - a must have
Cisco Cookbook is a a complete reference guide for field engineers and Network Administrators. The book has practically everything you need to know to competently configure cisco routers for a production environment. However, if you do not already have a working knowledge of Cisco networking technologies this book maybe over your head. For experienced Engineers and Administrators, the book is a must have for your desk reference.
5-0 out of 5 stars All is in there !!
If you are an administrator and you have forgotten details about a router configuration, that you need. this book will be the real lifesaver.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Next Big Thing...
What held me back from 4 stars was the repetition. This is a small book -- easy to read in one sitting -- and I felt that there was some repetition in a few places that would have made the book tighter, smaller, and a better read.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but narrowly-focussed, error-ridden and frequently annoying
There is a lot to like in this book, and a lot not to like.I'll talk about the negatives first and then discuss the positives.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's not about Ruby Replacing Java: Read it before any conclusion
This books doesn't say Java is dead. It points the problem that the platform and (mostly) tha language has and try to show alternatives.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not a tutorial.
This book is not a tutorial on Apache. Forget about this book if you're seeking to implement the ubiquitous LAMP (Linux, Apache, MYSQL, PHP) combination. Perhaps you wish to complement your pursuit of a computer science degree with some resume enhancing practical skills. Or perhaps you're a seeking some IT certifications, or perhaps you're a hobbyist web developer - in all cases this book contains nothing that couldn't be freely found on an internet search engine. Most of the book's chapters consist of a series of Apache's features with each followed by a cryptic discussion that doesn't actually teach you anything. So unless you're a Apache expert looking for a handy reference to keep close at hand then please buy something else. Like a book that actually does the job of teaching you to do something with Apache.

4-0 out of 5 stars Java 1 there's a good reason
Hi,
4-0 out of 5 stars not great but still quite worth of it
I partly agree with the downstairs, but can not put it in 1 star.

5-0 out of 5 stars You want to write Servlets & JSP's - Buy This!
I'm not a big reviewer. I find writing a challenge, even if it's a positive experience, as it is now. I started learning Java a few months ago and bought a number of books on the topics I needed to really create a java website.
5-0 out of 5 stars Precisely the book I've been dreaming of...
This book is exactly what it claims to be: a general reference to hundreds of "everyday" situations Java Web developers face. Just as any cookbook, it doesn't go into the "deepest" details about every little thing, and it does give examples of ways to not reinvent the wheel. Some reviewers see this as worthy of only 1 star... This is only a 1 star book for readers who like to reinvent the wheel and waste time on unnecessary details... if you're like me and have deadlines to meet, you'll find what you need here quickly and efficiently.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hampered by use of custom libraries
Being an O'Reilly fan it is hard for me to find fault with their no-nonsense approach to technical books, but there is one MAJOR issue I have with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars good, concise algorithm book ruined by comment
compare to most algorithm/data structure books out there, this book is not as complete as those, but it's much easier to read, and diagrams in this book is well drawn and much eaiser to follow. Why would I only give it 3 stars? One thing really ruined this book - obviously the publisher/editor/author try to increase the total page number by putting ridiculously big comment block in sample code(single line comments takes about 5 lines, all surrounded by '*' and spaces) This made the sample code difficult to read, imagine a 5 line function has to be printed in 2 or 3 pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but HORRIBLE CODING STYLE!!!
The book contents is good, the algorithms presented are more or less well explained and the implementeations themselves are not bad (but could be better).
1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money
To be fair and honest, I have not read this entire book and that is because I've read far better ones.If you are interested in this topic (and if you're a programmer or computer scientist, you should be), look to Robert Sedgewick's excellent "Algorithms in C" in two volumes, or "Mastering Algoritms" by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein. While the algorithms in Cormen, etc.'s book are not in C, they are in a pseudo language that easy to convert to C.I'm really, really glad I looked this book over before flushing my (limited) money away. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Serriously flawed
I found this book to be seriously flawed in the following ways:
3-0 out of 5 stars Some of the foundation is good, but with problematic gaps
I am a newbie to MySQL/PHP. Truly. Many reviews of the O'Reilly series clearly have extensive backgrounds in programming. I do not: I had a little HTML under my belt, that's it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for learning the basics
Learning PHP & MySQL is a detailed guide to building a database-driven web site. The authors do an excellent job of starting from the beginning, assuming no prior knowledge of either PHP or MySQL.In fact the only assumptions that the authors seem to make is that you have a very basic understanding of HTML.After working through the book and the detailed examples anyone should be able to write basic programs the meet common needs as well as create and interface with a MySQL database. Some of the programming areas covered in the book include decision making, working with arrays, using functions, database design fundamentals (missing in most books), getting PHP to talk to MySQL, modifying objects and data, and security. At the end of the book the reader ends up with a complete example application.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful, but it's Hit-and-Miss
Because this is a "cookbook," it gives you recipies -- step-by-step instructions for performing specific tasks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Succinct and clear to understand . . .
A well-organised and clearly written collection of useful commands and solutions to help one along with the often exasperating arcana of Linux. Covers all flavours and is a 'must have' book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect binding keeps the book open at the desired page
... which comes in real handy considering how often I reference it.
