2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date now
Python has come a long way. This book does not instruct you on any of the newest features or capabilities.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great
I am new to Python and really, really like this book. I have read it cover to cover twice. It is obviously biased in favour of Python, but goes out of its way to explain the "gotchas" and things that are not intuitive. All in all, a WAY above average computer book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not a reference book
This book isn't horrible, but it meanders all over the place. It often confuses the issue by using several concepts in one example. There are too many instances where a technique is shown but then explained several chapters later. Sometimes this is necessary in language books, but this book abuses the idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars RIGHT TO THE CORE OF THE EXAM!!
Are you looking to complete your Microsoft Certification? If you are, then this book is for you! Author William R Stanek, has done an outstanding job of writing a 3rd edition of a book that helps IT professionals complete their Microsoft Certification.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Training Resource!
William Stanek's MCSE Core Required Exams is the best training resource I've found for helping me to study for my exams. I swear this book packs in more than the 4 book set I bought previous to this (and stopped using in favor of this). In his pocket consultants, Stanek has proven he has a gift for getting to the point and being concise while at the same time being comprehensive. This book is not different. This is the single most useful training guide I've ever purchased. Excellent as a reference as well as a study guide. I can't recommend this highly enough. Every network administrator should own at least one copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage and completely reliable
This is definitely a better book compared to others available. Although I haven't made it all the way through this book yet, I'd like to say that it's taught me a lot. I've been using computers and managing Windows Servers since the days of Windows for Workgroups. Just goes to show even though you use an operating system daily there are still many things you can learn about it. With the excellent content and practice tests, this book is a GREAT buy! I would definitely recommend it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Book is kind of outdated
Book is based on 2.4 kernel. Since we are currently at 2.6 kernel this book does seem to have outdated information

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide
It would be a good guide to a person to prepare for a project to develop embedded linux system. It gives you the information what is necessar, what is work well and how to get them. Butyou should have some experience on linux language.
2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I read this book in about 2 hours and the contents really disappoint me.I expected the book to discuss in details of the issues related to embedded linux. And to a degree, this book is like a dictionary of all the terms you might encounter during the development and only a few direct examples. And given how fast the Linux kernel, open source packages evolve over time, the examples given in this book is totally outdated.

This is the my first review on Amazon. This book is so nicely written. The examples are short and precise. All the Advanced topics are covered in a great way. Highly recommend it to all developers who want to gain more expertise.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best .net book I have read so far
this book brought me out of the darkness into the light.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of complex material
Lwy's book does a great job covering some complex, arcane topics. He nicely lays out fundamentals on interface-based design and development, then moves on to clearly cover tough topics like remoting and multithreading.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a web developer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Christian Wenz, has done an outstanding job of writing a book for developers who are using ASP.NET and would like to take their applications a step further by using the Ajax technology; and, for developers who are using another technology, but are interested in the Atlas framework.
4-0 out of 5 stars Most helpful if you're committed to the Microsoft platform...
As they've done with most popular technologies, Microsoft took Ajax and wrapped it up into a form that is tightly integrated with their own software framework. The result is what they call Atlas, and it's basically Ajax integrated with ASP.NET.If that's your platform of choice, then you'll likely find a lot of value in the book Programming Atlas by Christian Wenz.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference, but do we really need Atlas books?
Even though Atlas has not yet been officially released, this book is already a late comer to the market. It's been beaten to market by a variety of AJAX texts that included some coverage of Atlas and at least one dedicated Atlas book from Apress. With all the press around Ajax and the huge Microsoft ASP.NET programmers market, putting out a book in the Atlas category is an opportunity that won't be ignored by the major publishing houses. After trying out Atlas for a while during its Community Technology Preview (CTP) release and seeing the fairly extensive documentation and examples released by both Microsoft and the community, I tend to think that it's an opportunity that they might best have chosen to ignore just the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book
With only a few months of OO programming about 6 years ago, I needed a book to take me from the beginning again. This book delivered. I found I have needed to read some chapters several times to 'get it', particularly chapters 7 & 8. I like the way he writes an example and then steps you through it, breaking down the code into sections. It was easy to read and easy to refer back to. I still have a couple of chapters to review and I'll be looking for more of his books.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a programmer or novice programmer with little or no object-oriented programming experience? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Jesse Liberty and Brian MacDonald, have done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a primer on the C# 2005 language specifically, and object-oriented software development in general.

You got to know the basics of Visual Basic before using this book. This book is a very good reference for learning Visual Basic 2005 and also for the advanced developer. It's good for beginners when you are in the stage of "How do I do this...". It's also includes updates for VB6 programmer who are upgrading to Visual Basic 2005 alerting them about the code breaking changes in Visual Basic 2005. The problems discussed are real-world that you may have faced or will face in your development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, we even use it at Microsoft ...
I am working on a commercial XML application at Microsoft that is heavily leveraging WPF and pretty much all of the devs on my project that are developing in WPF have this book sitting open on their desks right now.It is a really great, easy to read and understandable book. You still need the detailed documentation on MSDN when you want to see all of the API details but if you want a logical, understandable walk throught WPF this is the book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Out Of Date
While Avalon aka Windows Presentation Framework is still in beta, I had hoped that the code examples and references in this book would not be far out of date.I am finding that they are dramatically out of date (writing this review 04/27/2006).This is not to criticize the quality of the book or of the content; it appears to be well written. However, it was written in September 2005, and there has been at least 3 new beta releases of the framework since then.About 1/2 of the examples I have tried will not even compile, or have bad runtime errors.
5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough grounding
The nascent WinFX API, of which Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is a part, is one of the most exciting developments in Windows programming in years. Though the technology is still in beta (it is slated to ship with Windows Vista in late 2006 or early 2007), it can be used to build working applications now, in either the Vista beta or Windows XP with Service Pack 2, allowing the adventurous developer to get a jump start in the technology that will drive Windows development for the next decade.

This is not intended for beginners in scripting or VBScript in particular. But for anyone with even moderate programming or scripting, this may be all you'll need to become familiar with VBScript.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book

5-0 out of 5 stars The Microsoft DNS Authority
Simply put, this is the most thorough and complete text on DNS for the Windows Active Directory (Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003) platform; period.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good preemptive strike book
This is the kind of book to read before things go boom, and you end up trying to decode DNS under, shall we say, less than optimal conditions:)
5-0 out of 5 stars Good text on DNS for Win2k3! Much of the same (good stuff)
As in-depth as you will get on DNS for Windows 2003. A recent reviewer stated that it's much of the same. Well, much of it really is; and if you''ve been working with DNS for as long as many of us, nothing about its operations should be new to you. The most significant "tweaks" in DNS in the past few years have been done by Microsoft, to support their AD/200x line - those features are detailed quite specifically in this book (it's what this is all about anyway). And with AD continually evolving, chapters such as Managing DNS Programmatically (with WMI completely in mind) should be of utmost importance for the practicing MS administrator (that is, if you've really read the book!) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, easy steps, wonderful results.
This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.

    2-0 out of 5 stars not-so-fast ...
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Wonderful effects for the artistically inclined. The recipes in this book truly are easy to reproduce. You can apply these techniques to any of your digital photos. ... Read more

I went to my local bookstore to get a functional understanding of ".NET". My previous readings had been hit and miss and provided little understanding of the new platform.
3-0 out of 5 stars .NET Framework Essentials (3rd ED)
As the title says, this book gives the essentials of the .NET framework. It is not an exhaustive treatment, rather, it touches on the main features of .NET.The book assumes that the reader is fluent in object-oriented and component-based programming.Overall, the book was fairly well written with the main features of the .NET framework being clearly explained. The book has no distractive "fluff" in it, so one can easily dive into learning about .NET.The authors give an overview of .NET, and then present a description of the common language runtime (CLR).The common programming model and working with .NET components follow.XML data and web services are clearly explained with a lot of code snippets being given. The book concludes with chapters on ASP, Windows Forms, and mobile devices. The appendices are useful, as sometime acronyms aren't defined in the main text, but are explained in the appendix.
1-0 out of 5 stars To Software Developers: Don't Bother
IMHO, OReilly tends to have the best technology books (I own many) but this book isn't one of them. This book is lightweight even as an introduction. This book is certainly fine for managers, senior architects, and business types, but if you plan to design and write software I recommend Jeff Prosise's "Programming Microsoft .NET" and Jeffrey Richter's "Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming", though a bit dated, both cover the .NET framework essentials and then some. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ASP reference book
This is an excellent companion book to 'Professional Active Server Pages'. Like most O'Reilly Nutshell texts, this book is designed more as a reference aid, rather than a learning text. If you buy both the Professional ASP tome, and this reference guide, you've bought everything you need for ASP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
As a student in college, I want to learn some advanced web programming language. I found this book is very helpful for beginner. I also get a discount from couponsky.com when buying this book. This book is not only useful for beginner's studying, you also can take it as reference after you finish the studying. I recommend this book to the beginners in ASP.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference and code samples, but...
Somewhat in a rush and while trying to learn ASP I purchased this book.I thought it was aweful and it collected dust for nearly 6 months while I searched elsehwere to boot myself up on ASP.However, now that I'm fairly proficient at ASP, this book has been helpful as a reference. No so much for the actual reference value but becasue the sample code helps put things in perspective. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's an OK book
The people are right that this book could have been much less thick if it wasn't for the examples. Personally, I thought they were useful. Keep in mind that they have complete examples in both C# and VB.NET, and all that code wastes a lot of space.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Little Practical Information
Over 70 Percent of this book is code listings (much of it auto generated) that is available in the sample code. Why generate your own database when pubs and northwind provide adequate examples. If you want to learn how to design a database there are ample books out there that are quite good. Most of the examples have very little real world application. As an example of practical concise real world examples look at "Building Web Solutions" by Esposito. He provides four times the useful information in 350 pages that this book provides in 1200.Look elswhere if you want good insight and practical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete! Well Documented! Superb!
I found myself searching for a book that covered the TreeView control and others in great detail. I needed a book that would give detailed examples of how to use the advanced features of Windows Forms Controls and this was it. I use C# but appreciate the fact that both the VB.Net and C# codes is included as I never know if I will be asked to work on a VB.Net project. I have several other C# books that documented the basics of how to program C#, but this is the first that really showed me how to use the power of Win Forms to build a user friendly UI. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars COOKING WITH ASP.NET 2.0!!
Are you journeyman programmer who knows the basics of ASP.NET? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Geoffrey T Leblond and Michael A Kittel, have done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a book that is a collection of ASP.NET 2.0 recipes that aims to help you quickly and efficiently solve many of the day-to-day problems you face when developing web applications with the .NET platform.
    2-0 out of 5 stars ASP.NET 1.1 with a bit of 2.0 patched on
Much of the content was clearly taken from earlier 1.x versions of the book without being re-written to take advantage of 2.0.Yes, the samples may compile and work, but they are often not 2.0 best practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the Mac Geek
I was a bit worried that the book would be more for beginners, but have been pleasantly surprised.I have been scripting on Linux and Unix machines for years and this is a great book for those who like working under the hood.

4-0 out of 5 stars An advanced index to Tiger Unix
This book isn't for the average geek - if you're a geek but not a UNIX geek then don't buy this book.Even if you are a Unix geek the book is of potentially less value than you might expect... so let me adjust your expectations a bit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Excellent. Very helpful. And even if you are a real geek who prefers to look up the man pages, or consult mailing list archives, you shouldn't dismiss this book too quickly. 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a beginner to intermediate system administrator? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Jonathan Hassell, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows you how Windows Server 2003 and its follow-up release, R2, works and the different ways to administer machines running that operating system.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
I have given this book a 4 star rating as a geek friend who helped me set up my business server read it and said it was pretty good. I am an experienced applications programmer with substantial knowledge of networks and the practicalities of server services. I incorrectly thought this book would almost be like a step-by-step for setting up your own server. The description is correct, each chapter does explain in brief detail what that feature is and then goes into detail of how to set it up. HOWEVER at no point does it explain why you would need the feature or what the acronyms used mean or what is achieved after you add that feature. Personally if you already know about servers, understand the terminology and acronyms and have set up many servers before then my geek friend advises this is a great book. If you are a geek but know little about server terminology and are looking for a step by step book on how to set up a server starting with Server 2003 forget it. If you are not a geek you will be unable to read this book at all, it lost me after only a few paragraphs on every chapter. I gave this book away to my friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Clear, Concise, Yet Comprehensive
The new 2nd edition of this book has been completely updated for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and release R2, and information on administration using command-line utilities has been added to each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
"Programming Excel with VBA & .NET" is certainly a very 'weighty' tome. At around 1100 pages you certainly get a lot of paper for your money! However, do you get value for your money? I have yet to read a book on this topic which is more comprehensive in its coverage in terms of the description of the Object Model and the properties and methods, in many cases complete with useful examples. So in that regard it is an excellent reference. The benefit of the author being part of the Microsoft OLE Automation team when VB was added to Excel is very clear. The book also covers VBA itself in good depth. However, I feel that much of this could have been usefully relegated to a reference Appendix. If you are buying this book to learn VBA as such then there are many other excellent choices. The value in this book is in the application of VBA to Excel. You should not consider this book unless you are already very comfortable with VBA. If you are only just learning VBA but try to go on to read the rest of the book, you might find it hard going.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Authoritative
When you attempt to get into a new area of coding, it is best to have an authoritative reference. Confidence in your source really helps in getting through the inevitable rough spots. "Excel with VBA & .NET" seems to fill the bill. It certainly does not hurt to know that the author was on the Microsoft OLE Automation team when VB was added to Excel.
