5-0 out of 5 stars Bring back the OS hack!
Miss the days of digging deep into your desktop OS and really figuring out how to make that machine sing? Were you the kid who was grounded in middle school for pulling apart the family computer?Want the power thatautoexec.bat and config.sys gave you to make MS-DOS your own OS?This bookputs MSW-95 system back in the hands of the bedroom hack, and gives thefearless user the power to move past that "hit the television to fixthe picture" stage to which to which GUI has stuck most of the world. This is your chance to see the man behind the curtain!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another O'Reilly Masterpiece!
This is an excellent book.Think you know Windows?Read this book, and I think you'll discover more than you think. If Windows is giving you fits, or you'd simply like to change a few things that just annoy you (whodoesn't?), pick this one up.It's very simply an excellent reference toolfor both Windows users and anyone who administrates Windows computers. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Usable Book"
Finally a book that is not as thick as my family Bible and a lot of the Microsoft "Hype" that is in the other books. It gets right to the issue. Those O'Reilly folks do an excellent job in all of their Nutshellbooks and it good to see them approaching the Microsoft world with the sameoutlook. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I found the book very useful.
Two years ago, when I was merely a Novell 3.x administrator supporting Windows 3.x, I found this book to be a GREAT introduction to the power of NT.Now, as a seasoned NT support engineer, I still would recommend thisbook to any person new to NT support.1-0 out of 5 stars Are these reviews trust-worthy ?
I bought 2 books from O'reilly partly based on thegood reviews for them on this site.I thought the publisher had good-quality books. Now I doubt the trust-worthiness of these reviews.1-0 out of 5 stars No "computer person" would need this book
Last time, I gave it a 3 stars.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book -- not so easy for beginners
this is a good book because it gives one access to all the commands and their arguments for dos. however, there is no explanation on how to use most of the arguments properly and often these cannot be discovered intuitively. also i found, to my chagrin, that there was no explanation on how to create batch files and other executables with the command line, but i suppose that maybe this is beyond the scope of the work. all in all a decent book that cuts to the chase when it comes to using the command line.

4-0 out of 5 stars Windows NT Desktop reference. By MSFAQ.com
This is one of the most convenient books that I have ever touched. It brings the power of the command line into the hands of the common man. It's ultra small size makes it easy to toss it in your bag and bring italong to read over when waiting around for life's little interruptions. Itis well laid out with a very useful and concise index. The commands arebroken up by topic and sorted alphabetically. If you think you know itall, get this book, it will show you how wrong you are.I kept browsingthrough it and finding really cool ways to do things all from a commandprompt. O'Reilly also throws in keyboard shortcuts and GUI tips and tricks. It is books like this that gives O'Reilly such a good reputation foruseful and well-written books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for programmer, not the administrator
I needed to find a book that delved into the Win9x registry in the same amount of depth as this one, but this book is almost totally VB & C oriented. I bought it looking for a tools I could use within the commandshell that's native to Win9x, but even though it didn't have what I waslooking for, it's still a great book, but it's definitely a programmersguide, not an administrative tool. Since I got it, some friends have toldme how a combo of Kix & Rexx scriptinig is actually what I'm lookingfor. 5-0 out of 5 stars very worth reading for programer!
If you are going to program with registry, this one is your must have. There are in-depth explanations of backing up, restoring and accessing to the registry, plenty of examples in the book. The author also address the registry(key)difference between WindowsNT and Windows95, though not very thorough. Except some functions are "obsolete" (i.e. getwinflags()) and all of them are used "old fashioned" c, the codes in those examples are well tested. More over, there are twocharpters are dedicated to "VB" programers and whenever possible, the author tries to show the example in both "C" and "VB". I would like to see the second version of this book explaining more about WindowsNT registry and using MFC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the purchase price
This was the first "registry" book that I bought and I measure all of the others by it.If you are a programmer, this is *the bible* of registry programming as far as I am concerned. My only disappointment was the lack of a "reference" to most common registry entries. There are a number to be found, but they are scattered through-out the book and there aren't enough. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pure russian developer
I'm a pure russian developer, that want to do the File System universal reader. And i want to have electronical version of this book. Please, send me one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book on the Windows 95 file system internals
I first found this book when I was trying to write two VxDs on Windows 95 in 1997. One of them was using IFSMgr's hook and redirected the file system functions. Mr Stan Mitchell's book helped me a lot to discover under thehood materials on the issue. And his sample file system driver in thecompanion diskette was essential for me to find the missing clues. I thinkthis book is two thumbs up for anyone who are interested in Windows 95 filesystem!

Editorial Review

Windows NT's user-management tools can prove confusing, but this guide does a good job of explaining them. Taking a sort of God-and-humankind approach to the relationship between system administrators and users (an appropriate analogy), authors Meggitt and Ritchey first describe the basic formula that you can use to get users up and running under Windows NT. They then chronicle the customization tools available to administrators, detailing the philosophies and procedures involved in making groups, dealing out permissions, establishing domains, and creating trusts. They also tell how to keep an eye on users, providing a good analysis of the contents and formats of the various log files.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I am fairly new to NT administration and bought this book thinking it would introduce an easier way to administrate my domain. It does talk alot about the theoretical part, and you feel like the author(s) is/has been anadministrator. But it is defenetly NOT for begginers, and there is a heavyangel towards pearl, and assumes that you know the basics of pearl. If youare new, and don't know pearl you should probably buy something else thanthis.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should have been titled "Using PERL with NT"
A little to heavy on the PERL. If you aren't ready to sit and copy PERL code out of this book then look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital for professional, automatized Useradministration
This book gives a very good overview not only of how to manage Users in NT but also about Usermanagment generally. The Coverage of Scripting with Perl is excellent. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Actually a decent introduction to SNMP
I originally bought this book when it was released for a project involving SNMP. Of course the project was cancelled. There were two other attempts but they ended in cancellation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere
This books is awful. The SNMP tools provided on the CDROM do not load up properly. The source code does not address anything new or clever that you can't get from the MSDN. Save yourself the trouble of returning it (look elsewhere).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a new-comer
I was tasked with the job of developing an SNMP agent.I knew what theacronym stood for, and that was about it.The more I found out, the more Irealized I had to do.I am still working on my agent development, but thisbook has gotten me well on my way.I have written an enterprise MIB,loaded it in the NT registry, and have a .dll which I modelled from thisbook... I still have a bit of work to do, but my MIB browser is recievingdata that I programmed the windows NT SNMP service to send!!GREATexamples!the CD has been worth its weight in gold! ... Read more
