5-0 out of 5 stars Great Solaris System Admin Book
have used this book to upgrade my Solaris Admin certification to Solaris 10. I've had a few versions of Solaris certifications, and I can say it for sure that this is the best SCSA certification book I have read so far. The author does an excellent job in staying true to the exam objectives and yet presenting the material as a cohesive course in basic Solaris 10 system administration. There is a perfect logical flow. The author starts each topic from scratch and covers it to an adequate depth, while defining and explaining all terms and concepts on the way. That makes it a self contained book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not really impressed
I've taken and been a certified Sun Solaris administrator for many years.I decided to upgrade my certification to Solaris 10 and purchased this book as a reference. It's a good reference, but was not really a contributing factor in preparing for the exam.
5-0 out of 5 stars Passed Both the Exams
Passed both the exams (310-200 and 310-202) by studying just from this book. Feels great! Along the way, this book cleared many doubts and confusions that I had. I'm very pleased with my score on the exam, and with this book. Great book! It's going to stay in my shelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book -weak in areas
I bought this book for my Solaris 10 Upgrade exam -result, passing score! However unless you are an experienced SA,I would recommend not using this book as your sole study guide. There are a few technical inaccuracies in addition the material fails to delve deeply enough into certain key exam areas such as Sol on X86. Post-exam, I view it as a nice Sol 10 reference to keep around.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect
A well written book, gives you almost the information you need to pass the certification exams and also some additional information. Unfortunately it still lack a few information that SUN ask in some questions. I think this is a good book and reference, but you need to already know Solaris and SUN platforms or you'll find this book a bit difficult.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's really a nice book!
It's a good book, it contains all details about Solaris 10..& repeating Solaris '10'..as there're many books claiming it's subject is Solaris 10 but in fact they don't cover any of Solaris 10 new topics..this book does.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not suoitable for sun solaris 10 security exam
Took sun solaris 10 security exam today, the exam is very heavy on containers (Global vs non global, how to configure BART inglobal environment and will it flow down to non global), how to perform patching in global and non global environment, what is easiest way to setup 20 containers inside the same machine, definitions of key terms in Kerberos, what does kerberos each component do (drag and drop) and SFM and ipsec and ip filters syntax to block dns lookup. How to update the system automatically and what commands to use for automatic updating choose all correct commands . The textbook only covers 30% of the solaris 10 test only.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unclear, unfocussed and hard to use
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I find this book quite useless. I am a system administrator with more than 8 years experience on the Sun platform.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good study guide but you still need hands on experience
This is a very good study guide for the Sun Certified Security Administrator for Solaris Certification. However you will also need and should have some hand on experience with the OS. Don't worry though you can download the OS free at Sun for both SPARC and Intel platforms.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good study guide and reference
This is the only book I used to study for the exams. In the few areas where the book was weak on a topic, I sought additional information or clarification from articles I found on the Web.There are a few typos here and there, but nothing major.Overall, a good book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can a person be in love with a book?
Wow!I'm an intermediate Solaris Sys Admin.I used to be an SGI SA, but alas... not much call for that any more.I took the Sys Admin I and II classes at Sun to make it easier to switch to Solaris Admin. This book, at least as far as I've gotten so far, has so much more of the wonderful little details that help sys admins *really* understand what's happening on a system.Though I bought it in order to take the certification test, it's the Solaris 9 Sys Admin book I was looking for when I bought a whole bunch of other less than stellar Solaris books.Every Solaris SA should have this on their bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buying it for certification

While no one book will guarantee certification success, it is an excellent supplement to help you pass..

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed with Digital Version--unable to print sections
I bought the digital version of this book so I could download it and have it immediately.I intended to print sections of it to carry with me to study.Imagine my surprise when I was unable to print any of it.Guess I should have just bought the book and waited the two weeks for it to find me overseas.I don't like to read directly from a computer screen for any length of time.It is searchable, which is nice, but not portable.

2-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst I've used (and I've used a lot!)
If you're looking for a book to help you quickly pass the exams, go away. There's just too much superfluous information to wade through when your focus is on passing an exam. Gobs of details you simply don't need to know to pass the tests.2-0 out of 5 stars Book did exactly what it promised
It covered everything needed to get top scores on the 2 tests. Using the book, I pulled a 92% on 011, and 95% on 012.Read more

This Exam Cram 2 book cover about 95% of the test objectives. I would recommend using this book along with Bill Calkins training guide for high scoring exam results. 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but use it with another study guide.
Update on my review (04/06/06)
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for SA-014, unadequate for SA-015. Good sample tests
This is good book, definitely better then average for 310-014, and barely adequate (or even less then adequate) for 310-015. So four stars is for the 310-014. It should be three stars for 310-015.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide
This book is excellent as a quick study guide for the Solaris 8 SCSA exams.Whether one passes or not does not determine whether this is a good book or not.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good brief book for experienced guys....
This book is pretty helpful for those having good hands on experience. It helps to prepare in short time for them. It touches most of the test objectives. I scored 90+ in part I & II exam & used this book mostly. Here things are given very shortly. One shouldstudy this along with some good descriptive book for better result.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Prep for the Exams
This book covers both tests for the Solaris 8 Sys Admin cert.It has a practice test for each exam I & II (a good thing). It identifies the areas and the depth of proficiency needed for the exams.Take heed, Exam II coverage needs a little a more work (I felt).I blew the first exam out of the water and skimmed the surface on Exam II.Use this book as a road map to focus your study. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book, all you need to pass the exam
this is the only book I used the pass my SCNA. everything is in there but you have to read very carefully. It's a small book so you tend to read it fast but take your time and be patient.5-0 out of 5 stars Best for the job just like the other Crams.
Aimed at getting you through the exam, the best book for the job by far.Make sure you have been working with the product for a while, read a couple of good texts and then top it off with this book for the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best resource - ( typos + inconsistencies)
For the Solaris 8 Network exam, this is the only book I would recommend.I come to this decision fairly easy due to the lack of material in this area.It does have very good information but there are about 4 chapters where I found some inconsistencies. The chapter on DHCP was an ordeal, although it did have the best TCP/IP Suite and IPv6 coverage. The book does not have a prep exam the kind you would find in an Exam Cram (hmmm, that could be immensely helpful). It does have 10 or 15 questions after each chapter which were good (minus inconsistencies in some chapters) but it also has two essay form questions after each chapter as well. The intro alludes that these essay style questions are needed for the exam but this is false and a bit of a distraction.I passed the first time and learned a few things so I gave it marginal 4 stars.Study the book, refer to man pages to iron out typos and inconsistencies, purchase a home copy of Solaris 8 x86.good luck

5-0 out of 5 stars The only choice
I bought and started reading Rafeeq Rehman's book, couldn't get past the typos and put it away.I don't mind that he couldn't spell, but I don't trust book editors that can't do a basic spell check, so I lost a lot of confidence. I tried to work my way through Sun's class workbook, but found it dry.In the meantime, my boss was pressuring me to complete my exam. I purchased the (very expensive) Sun online exam and Rick Bushnell's book, studying both for two weeks.I passed the exam the first time (unusual for me), and even managed to get a 66 on DHCP.I'm throwing away Rehman's book, but will keep Bushnell's for future reference - lots of good info, minimal typos, and great conversational style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Most Excellent EXCEPT DHCP chapter ...
I used mainly this book, along with the New Riders (to a lesser extent), to study for the SCNA.It is most excellent EXCEPT for the DHCP chapter which has blantant TYPOS galore and is just flat out INCORRECT at parts.Read more

Editorial Review

The classic way of breaking into Unix system administration is by getting a job in a university's computer lab, where you keep an eye on machines and users and in the process learn the essentials of what may be the world's most reliable operating system. If you've managed to bypass that career path and still want to prepare yourself for a career in Unix, consider a professional certification. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Like many others note, this book is below par...
One would think that a book titled "Sun Certified System Administrator Solaris 8 Study Guide" and backed with the offical Sun logo would satisfy a few basic criteria. First and foremost, it would be a Study Guide. It doesn't come close. Or that it would be a complete guide for both parts of the test. No, it only partially covers Part I.
3-0 out of 5 stars Preferred "Solaris 8 Exam Cram" if only one study guide
Peter Gregory's Sun Press title provides very good coverage of the material on the part 1 exam.It does not, however, address part 2, so I had to find a second resource, Ambro's "Solaris 8 System Administrator Exam Cram", to study for the second part.I found Ambro's book also served as a very good study guide, and given that it addresses both parts 1 and 2, I would have to recommend it first if you only have the time or money for one reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful- but Seriously Flawed
This book is a frustrating one to review, partly because the author did a credible job with 98% of the effort needed to write a good study guide, but failed with the final 2%.I might also note I just passed the first exam for the SCSA, and this book was helpful to that end.But I would feel sorry for anyone who relied on it to learn the Solaris operating system: the proof-reading and editing of this book were just not up to par.The author is a respected member of the Unix community and certainly knows his material. But, because of sloppy editing and inattention to detail, the reader will come across truly amazing facts. Just one example occurs in the section pertaining to cpio. There the reader will learn that,Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Use the Practice Exams
I wanted a book that wouldn't waste my time with a bunch of background info and long winded explanations. This book does a fairly good job of giving me only what I need for the exam. There are some sections that it tries to teach you stuff though, and you have to read through the whole thing in order to pick out what you need. Highlighting key sentences and terms would help out. Otherwise the information is very close to what you get if you drop cash to get the Sun books. The Practice Exams at the end of each section are indispensable. They'll tell you what you're weak in, and are the closest to the real test that I could find. It would be great if they had a couple more. What makes this book so useful is that it provides all the important info in one location. It was my major study aid, for Part 1, and my only study aid for Part 2. I got 90/85 pretty much using only this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars As always Exam-Cram Crams!!
This is a great suppliment guide to any certification it focuses on "Cramming" what you need to know to pass the test, however dont count on it to learn. the Solaris Cert is a tough test be prepared, this book can help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for 310-009 bad for 310-010
I tried to use this for both exams. Passed the first one, but failed the second one twice. I was able to get 90 on the practice exam for part 2, but failed miserably when it came to the real exam. Was really disappointed in the book overall. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You can pass the test with this book
I have 3+ years of Solaris administration experience.I passed the first admin test recently with ease and my only source of study was this book. There were very few questionsI couldn't answer because they weren't covered in the book.Read each chapter in the book and answer the study questions in the CD that comes with the book. You'll be ready for the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book But ............
I decided to buy this book prior to attending a Sun Admin course to avoid being totally lost in class.3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info but...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great source
Thanks Bill for this book, honestly it's much better than the part 1. Ipassed the exam by getting 81%. Readers! please don't 100% rely on thesample questions on the CD(This is not a MS exam), but they give greatsupport. GREAT book, hope there will be a book by Bill for networkadministration as well in the near future --Cheers--

5-0 out of 5 stars This IS the book you need to pass!
I passed Part 2 today due to the Solaris 2.6 Administrator Certification Training Guide,Part 2.This book was actually an improvement over the Solaris 2.6 AdministratorCertification Training Guide, Part 1.3-0 out of 5 stars I Failed With This Book
I used this book and memorized ALL the practice questions.Questions aren't like a Trascender exam simulator.I got a 640 on first attempt.I then studied the original course material and focused on the objectives, then got 900 on second attempt. If you have the original course material, use it.If you don't, then don't rely on the practice questions beingtranscender-like.I even mastered just about all the practice questions onthe Internet that I could get my hands on.Apparently, it wasn't enough. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
A Slapdash.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for those with 1-3 years experience
I bought this book 4 weeks ago and I have steadily worked through all the exercises. I have 3 years experience with SunOS. I found that I could easily answer most of the questions which makes me confident that I'll pass the first exam next week. I'd like more practice exams to be included in a future edition - there are only 400 questions on the CD-ROM. Also, I might be blind, but I couldn't see any Microsoft jokes in this book lanman94...

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this one...
This book does cover most of the Sun objectives for the exam...But the book is poorly written, with a lot of mistakes. (Many of the mistakes are already listed in the other reviews here.)I also agree with reviewer "Sally" in that the content was copy and pasted all throughout the book...Paul Watters has a good start here, but needs to pay more attention to detail... and needs to add more examples and content.I don't believe that many will pass with just this book.Oh yeah... Paul... you can stop with all those Windows jokes... I've heard them all. ... Read more
