4-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied
I bought this new book which I got it for $4 less than any other place including internet and book stores. I received the book on time and as I expected. Started reading and enjoying it...

4-0 out of 5 stars Use this book along with additional resources
The book is well structured to cover the exam topics. It does, however, omit certain details in some topics which would be unclear from just the book alone if I didn't already know them or didn't find some better explanations elsewhere online. You'll need some additional resource, including .NET class library online reference and online tutorials to fully understand certain topics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty decent
I've not finished reading this book yet, nor have I completed all exercises. Already having a fair bit of experience with .NET and ASP.NET I can see that this book covers only the basics, though it seems to cover them quite well.I have, however, found a few code errors in the examples, which I feel detracts a fair bit from the overall quality of the book. ... this product is awesome, but ull need extra help to get cert.
1-0 out of 5 stars Badly structured and written
I'm an experienced vb6 programmer and looked for a book to help me make the switch. I found this book diving into issues without giving you any prerequisites. I had a hard time understanding where he wants to take me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe good for exam, but you won't learn .NET or C# here
This book has some highlights, but it is tightly authored to the VS.NET version it comes bundled with. Some folks will find this a bonanza, but that's only if you're willing to rubber-stamp your exam. There's abundance of Wizard code specific to VS.NET 2003 version. I am working with VC# Express 2005 and many of the things are N/A in this environment. ... anyway, I could sort my way out by looking at the samples and learn that what used to be a Control is nothing more than a Class that derives from Controls and some additional boilerplate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to VB.Net but poor certification prep
If you are new to Visual Basic.Net then this book is great for getting a basic understanding of the language. If you are using it to introduce yourself to the language then I would highly recommend it.However, this book miserably fails its' title in preparing for the 70-306 exam. 2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating
This book is chalk full of errors.I am not at all convinced that anyone went back through and actually tried to reproduce the examples and assignments found in this book.If you like a challenge and enjoy debugging someone else's code, this is the book for you.If, however, you feel that your time is better spent actually studying for the exam I would skip this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
This book is alright, but it does not take into consideration all OS's on which the code might be running (xp users beware on the globalization chapter) and some of the end of chapter questions don't even seem to be based on data discussed in the chapter. That all being said, there aren't many other options exam prep books for 70-306 and this one is at least easy to follow along with although I don't think it is in depth enough for the exam. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource for XML Editing
I have found "Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Microsoft VB.NET" an invaluable tool in XML editor development. It is quite detailed about accessing and manipulating XML data.

1-0 out of 5 stars More confusing
I was reading it as first book for most of the topics, It was total waste of time to read it.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Written
Judging by the positive reviews, this book must have some merit but it is certainly not in the quality of its writing or its accuracy.Perhaps the editor was reassigned to Longhorn duties. Here are some examples of what you can expect in the first two chapters:

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Very confusing book
Sorry for any harsh comments. But the book is so confusing explaining even simple concepts. I got frustrated when he tries to beat around the bush to explain STRONG NAMES.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good .NET Security book.
This will be the book that you must have if you are a newcomer in .NET Security. The explanations are clear, supported by the author's own experience in the field. Also, the code is easy to follow and straightforward.
5-0 out of 5 stars I rate the book 5-star without the least hesitation.
I just passed the exam 70-340, and this was the book I used in the last 2 weeks.

I just passed my 70-310 test with a score of 820. I used this book to get the basic understanding of what was covered. If you want to pass the ONLY way to go is with the Test King Questions and Answers. Don't waste your money on anything else. You'll thank me for it later. :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to pass but...
The practice exam on the cd was terrible and some sections are a bit patchy. If you buy the equivalent book for 70-175 you'll find that about 60% of this book is duplicated in that book. However, this book was my only resource and I passed the exam with just over 780.I think I could have done much better had I bought transcender.

3-0 out of 5 stars It does the job
I used this book to pass the exam. I scored 957. I did get a few questions in the exam that were either not covered adequately or not at all in this book. But, I do feel that the book did provide a solid resource for the key parts of the exam, i.e. ADO, MTS, COM and n-tier technology. I would only recommend this book to people that have a fairly solid background in VB and want to pass the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars decent material for exam preparation

3-0 out of 5 stars Understand MS' thinking
I agree with some of the feedback here. This is not a book for learning ASP.NET. But then the book does state this early on. By all means read my review, even if for an experience, but I wouldn't until you have had an experience with ASP.NET and Visual Studio. To appreciate this book for any benefit you can find from it, go on a course first.
2-0 out of 5 stars Frustratingly Incomplete
It looks like the book was rushed out the door. While there seems to be some good information in it, I was repeatedly frustrated with the end of the chapter tests asking questions that were covered nowhere in the book! Then when I did the first of the included Prep Logic tests, some of the answers were opposite of what was stated in the book.If you can't be consistent within the scope of the book it really throws it's reliably into question.Don't plan on using this as your sole resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed using this book but stay away from prep logic
I passed the exam using this book.I use .Net at work and read one intro book before this one. This is a good book and good practice tests at the end of the book tested skills that the exam tested.I actually saw very similar questions on the test. Some of the sample questions did not come from the text of the chapters, which I see a lot of people complain about, but I was OK with that. They do explain in the opening chapter that this should not be used to learn the basics of the language.Read more

EXCELLENT 2000 Publish Date 957 Pages BOOK WITH CD::: CAUTION : I am not certain, but there may be more than 1 edition of the same ISBN Number. The one I am commenting is the 957 page book 2000 Published with CD with PRIBNTED DATE 2000.
2-0 out of 5 stars A bed time story
This book is definetly not useful for continuing to learn VB.I found it poorly written, boring, with various grammatical mistakes and vague examples that are not very practical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but be aware that it is meant for a classroom
I purchased the book recently and enjoy the presentation of thematerial. One item to note, however, is that this book is meant for aclassroom environment. What this means is that there are samplequestions at the end of each chapter but SURPRISE no solutions.Thesolutions are contained in an instructors manual. This fact shouldhave been disclosed in the book's description so that I might havepurchased a diferent one. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Good for gving you false confidence.
First there'e the misleading title - COMPLETE CONCEPTS & TECHNIQUES1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
I teach Advanced Visual Basic. I inherited students who took the prerequisite course, Visual Basic from instructors who used this book. All the students I got in Advanced Visual Basic had absolutely no idea about programming. All they could do was draw good looking forms with some controls on them and copy the code from Shelly and Cashman book. It does not provide challenging, unsolved programming projects for the students. All the studentslearn is to copy its forms and its code.Whatever this book is, it cannot serve as a good textbook!2-0 out of 5 stars not a sound investment
The purchase of this book was a horid mistake.Only people who either want to learn a VERY little bit of VB or have cash to burn (in which case you should e-mail me for some ideas) should buy this book. There are other books which have a much lager, more usefull, scope. The book does hold your hand throughout the proccess, but it never lets go.The pace is way to slow, even for the newest newbie. The authors must have had elementary school children in mind while editing. It's more of a kids picture book than a textbook.Trust me... don't waste your money!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Of great help !
Yes, the exam covers all the chapters described in the book. So, take your time, do not rush into the end, pay extra careful attention to the details and, certainly, it will be of great help during the test taking. This book really prepares you to suceed in the exam and also to improve your actual programming techniques. Good luck!

It thought this book worked very well as both exam preparation and as a practical learning tool.I liked the way it walks you through a bunch of applications, then gets you to write something yourself to test your understanding. Also, reading the "Fast Facts" section the morning of the exam was a great memory-jogger. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A very Good Companion in Preparations for Exam 70-306
This certification study-resource formed part of my revision portfolio for Exam 70-306 (Windows-based Application Development with VB.NET).
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Exam Crams
If you're taking the 70-306, this Cram is a must. It covers a LOT, much better than other Crams I've used (SQL Server 7, VB6, Windows 2000). I have an MCSD and MCDBA and am now going for MCSD.NET, so I've been through the ringer of books and prep software... this Cram is a winner. Read it ALL and do all the practice questions and you will be way ahead (no one book does it all). I did pass this morning with a 900, so I was quite eager to let folks know how much THIS Exam Cram book helped.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enough to Pass the Exam
I passed 70-306 by using this book and the Transcender practice tests.I would not recommend this approach if you have never programmed Visual Basic before.I have been programming Visual Basic 6 for about 3 years and started with this test because I was comfortable with windows programming and Visual Basic. Please do not use this book to learn VB.NET since it really only covers the material necessary for passing the exam.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book
I guess i'm late, cus microsoft is now phasing out MCSD! Anyway i did both 70-175 and 70-176 yesterday (April 26th, 2004) and i Aced both exams (900 and 814 respectively). I primarily used this book, it covers everything u need to know. The great thing is that Mr. Foxall actually did thesed xams and understands exactly what they're about and as such does an excellent job in presenting the material. The chapter on Package and deployment and COM are the best i've seen yet! THIS BOOK + TEST KING practice questions EQUALS PASS.

I thought this book really helped me pass 70-305.However, it will probably not be sufficient if you are just beginning with the material or if you are using it as your sole resource.I used it with Self Test Software and I did not have any trouble with the exam. Also, as some of the other reviewers mentioned there are a few mistakes in the book especially with the chapter review questions. However, I still plan to use it to pass 306 and 310.Overall I would give this book a 7 out of 10.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment for beginners

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea ... bad execution
This book was a great idea in concept but it lacks in in execution. It suffers from poor editing. The examples often lack some critical piece that would make it very difficult for a beginner to complete the excercises and have working examples.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Joke and ripoff
This is a useless book. It has so many errors that you will have headache. Very poor explanation. Normally MS Press books are good but Microsoft did a very poor job on this. I should use this book in fireplace to get some benifit out of it. I would like to give this book negative star if I can but I cant.

1-0 out of 5 stars Keeping it Real
Definitely this book contains some useful material. The first chapters make a good impression, but as you go further you start to see that something is wrong. The author was facing an aggressive deadline and did not take into consideration anything.2-0 out of 5 stars Code samples are full of errors
The authors were apparently faced with an aggressive deadline for this book because it's exceptionally bad, even relative to other MS Press books. Due to the inaccurate writing and poor editing I wasted many late-night hours trying to get the sample code provided for the labs to run properly. Very little of the prescribed code even runs at all, without modification. Corrections for the most obvious errors are published on the MS Press support site but many of the other problems are quite subtle. I'm a decent programmer -- If I do say so myself Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book with shortcomings
This is a valuable book, it explained topics which were missing in some other books. In the other hand, the previous reviews did not mention some shortcomings in this book. The OOP part of this book is not good. The language in many parts of this book is ambiguous, it lures people to read these parts again and again, but after that the meaning is still not clear, while this repeated reading of such a big book wastes time. The sample code in this book is not available for download, although they are in the CD, but the CD is made in a mean way that the "copy" function is disabled, so this book is not good for busy people.

5-0 out of 5 stars MCAD/MCSD Training Guide (70-305): Developing and Implementing Web Applications with Visual Basic.NET and Visual Studio.NET by M
Very good. I recd. the book on time and condition the book was excellent...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!
This is THE book that I would recommend to anyone that wants to give this exam. Even with little or no experience with VB.NET or ASP.NET this book would serve as a helpful guide. Definitely a book for keeps!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not buying
I was going to buy the book, but after discovering that the associated website required me to install Firefox to view it (and how egotisitical and biased is that?), and then didn't format code samples in anything remotely like viewable, plus that most people comment on a lack of code in the book (or that is doesn't work), I think you'd have to be dumb to part with the money for it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
I purchased this book because I wanted to do socket programming. However only 30 pages is devoted to the topic. Threads are not covered as all and I found more information on the web then I found in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well done
This book took me from 0 to 50 on network programming in 1 long day.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the smartest and the fastest way to get certified !
I will suggest this book to everyone who want to pass and study for the exam quickly. I have been reading this book and I found that this book is really easy to read and has a good depth. It is a "to the points" type of book, and doesn't give me too much unnecessary information like normally other book does.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price regardless...
I used this book and Gunderloy's 70-310 book. This book alone will not help you pass the test, but it is worth the price for 2 whole practice tests and over a 100 chapter-end questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Foundation, Needed More
I passed 70-310 by using this book and the Transcender practice tests. For me, the Transcender tests filled in some gaps in the material that this book didn't touch on or didn't touch on in great detail.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me pass, but this book sent me through h*ll
I passed both exams, 305/306.This book was especially valuable in how much of asp.net + vb.net is covered. However, the book is so riddled with painfully time-consuming errors, it may not be worth buying unless the authors actively do something about erratta (sp?).I would have passed my exam a full month in advance if the editor was doing any "editing" at all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview but Weak in some areas
This Book is good for people who already have quite a bit of experience and only need an overview of the material required to pass the exams.I read this book first, then went to the ExamCram book by Mike Gunderloy. The ExamCram book filled in all the gaps left by this book, giving an excellent treatment of ADO.Net.The authors of this book are good writers and I think their goal was not to get into a lot of detail, but just to give readers a starting point for further study.I do like the style of the book, it is very well laid out and the Practice tests that come with the book are very good, almost as good as Transcender.I did buy the transcender tests/ Transtrainer video and they were also very helpful in passing the 70-306 exam with a score of 800.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for 70-305
Want to pass 70-305 first time around ? Use this book and the braindumps (www.braindumps.com) and you're there !
