2-0 out of 5 stars not one of my favorits
in this book every single sentence is a long,I mean very long, definition. The amount of information pressed into each single chapter is amazing. THis book claims to be an introduction to information systems, I have some backround information and still have trouble to understand this text. I would definitely not recomend this book. Please pick something else, and there are many better books out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost Impressed
I had this textbook in my MBA class at Rutgers University for Computer Info Systems class in Spring 2004. The text in the book is too small to read. They should have made the book bigger and used a more readable font. There are 4 real-life examples in each chapter, but the backround is terrible. It has a grotesque looking glass building which obscures the text. The technology they talk is somewhat out of date, and this book nearly put me to sleep. They make it sound like everything can be simplified down to a few concepts. Zzzzz

4-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to information systems
This book is just what it claims to be--an introduction to information systems. There is not a tremendous amount of detail here, but I believe there is enough to give the reader a good idea of the concepts involved. At times, the author does seem to carry on more than is needed, and often you can understand the concept of a chapter very well just by reading the sentences containing the bold words. The best part of the book, in my opinion, is the use of real-world examples, to show how the concepts discussed are being put into use, and how they have benefited real-life companies.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ian Sommerville's Software Engineering
A great introductory book on software engineering. It gives you a holistic view of software engineering, but lacks in details. It won't teach you how to draw ER diagrams but it will tell you what they are.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction and explanation of software engineering
Overview of Software Engineering, with a brief explanation of software process and project management. It mainly covers the design issue and introduces the method of handling critical system.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rather Cursory
Sommerville undoubtedly owns great knowledge over the topic. Unfortunately he has difficulties to write monolithicly. Most of the time he is beating around the bush. The examples he uses to explain the different topics are rather unusual and do not help to better understand what the techniques are all about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is a good book
Is a nice book, it hasn't got many advanced stuff like backups or problems solutions but is a good book for people just become a middle or new postgresql user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive coverage
This is the only PostgreSQL book that I know of that covers writing functions and triggers in PL/pgSQL with any level of detail. There is also a very detailed section on performace monitoring and tuning.Overall, the best book you can get on PostgreSQL administration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners
This is a great way to get started with postgreSQL or for learning databases in general. Each sentence actually makes sense and doesn't require referencing other texts like so many other technical books. The book is very thorough so don't let the size intimidate you.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting their own database project. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful, easy to read book on sv and verification
if you want to learn systemverilog and its application on verification, this is book for you. The book includes lots of good /short examples, help you better understand the concepts and discussions. If you have doubts, it is very easy to type in the coes to verify.A must have book to get yourself familiar with sv and verification.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Examples !
This book is a must if you are going to code in SystemVerilog. Chris is very knowledgeable about the language features and great at presenting these features in a very compact way. The examples alone make the book worthwhile.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn SV
I got this book to learn SystemVerilog being one of the new IEEE HDL and Testbench development languages. It is a great book and covers everything you need to know about SystemVerilog as a testbench development language. If one is coming from a HW development background, this is the book to read to learn the basic concepts of Object Oriented Programming and the additional bells and whistle which System Verilog added to Verilog.

4-0 out of 5 stars Closing the communication gap...
Facilitating communication among businesspeople and software developers in the preparation of acceptance tests is the mail goal of Fit, which also helps automate those tests. A tabular representation of tests provides the common language whose clarity and precision are key to improving communication between technical and non-technical people. As Dave Thomas says, Fit helps closing the "gap between the software that [is] written and the software the user [wants]".
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, not exactly great.
The first 175 pages of the book seem devoted to convincing management that the tool is worth using. The next 75 or so pages give details on writing tests. There are about 45 pages of the programmer's perspective. The rest of the book mainly deals with extending the system in ways that most people won't bother with. Finally there is a very brief word on non-Java tests that simply says to refer to the web sites.
3-0 out of 5 stars Better structured than the online docu
The book describes in detail how to use Fitnesse for the combination of requirements management and automated testing. Though this is interesting, the book does not offer more information than the online docu to fitnesse (though certainly in a better structured way, as the structure of the online docu is a nightmare).

5-0 out of 5 stars DAM good book
Extremely usefull roadmap to navigating the new territory of digital workflow. If you are a professional photographer shooting digitally, this book is the essential guide toeverything you need to capitalize on digital's opportunity and avoid time consuming mistakes.I feel like an evangelist, as I've bought a handfull of copies for colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a great guide to managing thousands of photos
One of the most difficult realities of managing thousands of digital photo images is how to label them in a consitent manner so that you can easily retrieve photos and keep track of photos that have been altered. Another important consideration is if you will be able to read the information as software and hardware changes occur. Peter Krogh makes logical suggestions and tells you why he chose to label an image in a particular manner. The DAM Book also has great suggestions on backing up photos. I have always struggled with labeling/numbering consistency, Peter Krogh makes it all very logical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for Photographers
Any photographer who is serious about their craft needs to take a good look at The DAM Book. This book was written by a true professional that knows their stuff and will assist you in getting your photos from the the boxes and boxes scattered no doubt throughout your house and into the digital repository that is a better place to store, access, and retrieve the precious prints that you work so hard on producing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good preparation books
I used three books to prepare for both Hardware and OS certification exams - this set and A+ Complete Study Guide, Third Edition (220-301 and 220-302) by David Groth.
2-0 out of 5 stars Book Too Big
This book is gigantic. It's full of "in between" information and is not suitable for an IT grad or someone with experience. The A+ is not a professional exam, its an entry level exam. I recommend the fast pass or something written by Mike Meyers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! - Good True-to-Life Questions!
This is a great book set. I havn't finished it yet, and from what I've read in the questions they do infact cover a good amount of the actual test content. Of course, not word-for-word but subject-wise, a lot of the questions are similar. While a lot of the content dealing with the A+ test is basicially garbage since computing today doesn't require knowledge of the IRQ of a floppy drive. In my opinion, this "Garbage Content" is a bad reflection upon CompTIA. Anyway, James Jones has made this book's information clear and concise to coincide with the test, and he has done a great job of it. James Jones A+, CompTIA C- (At best). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginner and Intermediate Ogre users
This book guides you through getting Ogre set up on Windows and Linux as well giving you a very firm base of knowledge of the engine. This book is definately aimed at new users, but I have been using Ogre for over a year and still found this book to be helpful and enjoyable. The author does a great job of giving clear explainations and examples!Overall a wonder book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
The book is very good. It is definitely aimed at a newcomer to Ogre, but it can be useful even for people who have been around Ogre for a while as they might be missing a few concepts or not be familiar with a few components that they might not have used before.

5-0 out of 5 stars valuable
As a graphic designer, I spend most of my time on the computer and have sorely missed creating with my hands. This book is bringing me back to that in an exciting way. Contrary to some reviewers I am very glad the book doesn't indulge too much in Photoshop instruction (although it does give information aboutPhotoshop that is most relevant to the processes, like print specifications). That would be a waste of space because there are a gazillion Photoshop books out there, but these techniques are much more rare and need as much space as possible to teach them. The authors do a great job of this. Very clear, thoughtful and succint writing. No wasted words.
5-0 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY INNOVATIVE !!!!
If you are a serious printmaker this book is a must have.It shows you how to combine traditional printmaking with digital printing, printing on different substrates, has great pictures and much more. YOU DONT NEED AN EXPENSIVE PRINTER TO FOLLOW THIS BOOK.I have an EPSON 1280 INKJET ($399) and it works great. The ideas and possibilities are endless. I highly recommended this book !

5-0 out of 5 stars Technology and creativity
It's good to see someone use technology creatively. All too often "art" and "technology" are seen as mutually exclusive. These authors show that that is certainly not the case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Has it all
I am writing in from India. I have been interested in Systems thinking/ system dynamics for about a year since I read an interesting consulting engagement in Europe that received an award from Management Consultants International (MCI). It's difficult to find a book that shows you the how and why of systems dynamics and its history and relevancy.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Eye Opener
This book was an eye opener for applying systems theory outside of the usual electrical/mechanical engineering presentation.Should be required reading for anyone considering business consulting. One of my personal challenges had been how to use the tools from systems theory appropriately in a business framework and this text provides ample guidance.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book of System Dynamics
Professor Sterman made a complete book of system dynamics method, system thinking to manage complexity if you are interested to create your mental model in a computer-aided model I strongly recommend this comprehensive book on modelling & simulation of complex problems.

As the author states in the introduction you need to read the book in a comfortable chair with a laptop+net connection, you cant read this without a keyboard with in arms reach.I expected the examples to be in pseudo code or at a less hard core level of C, if your programming is not top notch be carefull.

This book is class. Really great and the author is a gentleman. Also check out the online forums dedicate to this book at AI Junkie. There the author himself chips in with helpul advice for AI novices and stalwards alike. I have his other book too and it is also five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best practice for application software design
unlike many other books focusing on how to use a technology, or illustrating what is basic OO concept, this book focus on how to analyze and solve day-to-day application design issue. It has summed up many best practice and distill them into more concise and easy to understand building block abstraction. The style of writing is very easy to follow. It also makes me interested and want to read more, unlike other dry-reading book that make me sleep.I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in making a coherent and maintainable design for large system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading.Period.
I just finished reading this book by Eric Evans on "Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software."Domain Driven Design should really be required reading in college, in my opinion.Eric Evans has a way of describing benefits of rich modeling techniques and how to develop them.He guides you through learning to develop the ubiquitous language of the domain, an important concept for effective modeling. He also addresses many common concerns such as scalability with the techniques in the book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Might be good: could not finish
I must admit, I haven't finished the book. I find it nearly unreadable. There might be some crumbs of useful wisdom, but the boredom reading the book sent any brain cells to sleep that could absorb that wisdom. If the book would be condensed to - say -- 250 pages, it might be useful (did anyone edit the book?).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource - but use with caution
I purchased this book with it was first published and it greatly influenced my thinking and has continued to do so to this day. There is a large caveat I want to share before continuing - be careful of the Zachman Framework because if you do base your enterprise architecture on it you will soon discover that making changes is a tedious process that ripples across the matrix. That said, I continue to believe in the basic concepts and components of the framework, and I also think that it is an excellent way to gain a view of an enterprise when you are attempting to model it.5-0 out of 5 stars A book for multiple audiences that stands the test of time
I initially read this book at the start of my career as a systems analyst. The Zachman framework presented a great way to think about the relationships between systems, data, processes and business.Later on, as a project manager, it provided a more useful tool for understanding the importance of architecture in developing systems. In addition, it applies to architects and senior IT managers who want to make the most of their investment.5-0 out of 5 stars Amust-have for every Architect
This is a must-have book for Enterprise Architects. Application designers, aspiring to be architects, may also read this book. Certainly one of the best EAP books based on the Zachman framework. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars McConnell's high level approach to Project Management remains valuable even today. Be sure to read McConnell's recent texts.
The Software Project Survival Guide [Steve McConnell] remains applicable today as when first published in 1995. McConnell has a clear knack for combining research, experience, and theory. His writing style is clear, concise, and easy to understand (introduction level programmer through to management).
5-0 out of 5 stars Software leads need this book
Software Project Survival Guide is one of the best books I've ever read about leading a software project. The author is not trying to sell any specific process or methedology, instead the book is full of down-to-earth practical advice about software development. If you are a software lead, new or old timer, read this book. If you are a software manager, buy a copy of this book for every one of your leads.

4-0 out of 5 stars Common sense approach for all projects
Most of us have been involved with software projects that we would just as soon forget--or at least run away from screaming. If you want to learn how software projects should be run, or how to run one correctly yourself, then Steve McConnell presents a straightforward, common-sense approach that can be applied to all types of projects. The companion web site provides a complete collection of templates to support all aspects of managing a software project. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
This manuel was an excellent start for some of us "dummies" out there.Though I have signed up for a Project Class to be taken in person, this book as definately helped me to get by with a little help from the Dummy Writers.
4-0 out of 5 stars a real dummy review
great, worked for me.use this and the on line tutorial

4-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start
Facing the new year with numerous relatively small projects that I felt were out of control, I resolved to take action. I believed that my planning tasks were unlikely to tax the abilities of Project 2003, and was not really interested in knowing every detail of the software. I picked up this book, and was able to read the sections of interest--about 75% of the content--on a flight from Atlanta to San Jose. I was not disappointed. By the evening of January 10, my three most pressing projects were organized, resources were assigned, and realistic finish dates had been determined. The book gave me the information I needed to get results without false starts. While the attempts at folksy humor can be a tad annoying, the prose is generally clear and understandable. I doubt this is the book for you if you are managing a major project with dozens of people. However, if your projects are jobs like press releases, webinars, and minor software releases, you will likely be well served by it. ... Read more
