4-0 out of 5 stars Love this book to review the Maya class I just took
This book is awesome for me as I just finished a beginning Maya 3D modeling and animation class this past semester. I was afraid that I would forget a lot of what I learned and also that I wanted to review to enhance my understanding so I looked for a book that would take me step by step, through several different types of projects. And I'm happy to say that I'm one third into this very thick, but easy to follow book and it does just that. It really leads you by the hand, better than my instructor in the classroom, because I can go at my own pace (which is very slow). A great book for the beginner and soon to be intermediate Maya practitioner. Please note, however, that I also bought the Visual Quickstart Guide to Maya 6 previously, which has been a great cross-reference book to this particular Learning Maya 7: Foundation book. I guess no one book will answer or be clear enough on every little nuance of a topic; that is why it helps to have another book or two on the same topic as a cross-reference just in case you get stuck on an interpretation of the textual meaning or intention.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
This book is weighty, full-colored and honestly, looks pretty cool when it comes in the mail. The problem starts when you go to use it. For someone like myself who has absolutely no prior 3D animation expierence, this book is horrible. It skimps on steps, the steps it tells me to do fail to work in the program, the dozens/hundred of menu options are not labeled when you're doing the steps and then a few pages over it'll tell you to go to visor window and you're all, what? Visor menu? What in the world is that? Then you have to waste valueable time searching for the elusive menu.
5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL INTRODUCTION TO MAYA!!
It's pretty great for beginners, but if you have NEVER used a 3-D package before, I suggest doing the INTRODUCING MAYA 7: FOR BEGINERS first. I also suggest using the previous FOUNDATION BOOKS which include Salty the Seal and the spaceship battle since they teach things that aren't in this book. (As you can see, I'm a firm believer in grasping this program.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book !
It is a great book. But I give it only 4 stars is because it is hard to read. English is my 2nd language. I cannot read this book quickly. I even need check dictionary at least 2 times per page.I do not have the same problem when read other tech books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - Needs updated code samples and J2EE 1.4 support
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, particularly well-thought out design guidelines for developing J2EE application with or without EJB. The author introduced several best practices particularly the concepts and usage of Spring and Hibernate based j2ee development is quite helpful. In addition to this book, I find patterns and bestpractices from "Core J2EE Patterns /Deepak Alur", "Core Security Patterns /Christopher Steel" and "Enterprise Integration Patterns /Gregor Hohpe" would be helpful - especially if you are building a enterprise-class j2ee applications.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy managed, detailed and practical
This book is for all level developers who have interest on J2EE platform and development. In spite of the complicated technology, it can let readers digest the knowledge without difficulty. On the other hand, the main theme of author(J2EE without EJB) has become popular trends nowaday and the whole idea can be found in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A prefect choise for CCNA exam preparation
CCNA INTRO Exam Certification Guide and CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide by Wendell Odom are prefect choise for CCNA exam preparation. Both books are easy to read for non-native English speakers (like me), all concepts are well explained and illustrated with good examples. Books also covers all exam topics, I used only those books for exam preparation and I answered all questions except one.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide
Excellent book and I got it overnight. it is clearcut and precise and not techy talk
2-0 out of 5 stars Recurring problem
I purchased this book set and passed the INTRO exam easily but have failed the ICND exam twice. I found the exam to be much more difficult than the practice questions. The exam gave me 60 minutes and at the end of 50 minutes I still had several questions left. Starting to have doubts as to whether this book was the best source of my study material. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative but steep learning curve
I needed this book for a class, but had not taken assembler yet.by halfway through the course I was so very very lost, I had to drop the class.Well I took Assembler and then retook the class and everything was crystal clear.Do yourself a favor and learn assembler (self or class) before you take computer architecture (or whatever uses this book) or you'll have a much harder time. That being said once you have an idea what's going on this is a very informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written
I used this textbook for a computer architecture course, and found it to be extremely well-written, clear, and fun to read.It contains a wealth of information, from a review of logic design to advanced topics such as pipelining.Every component is explained down to the level of gates and flip-flops, leaving no "black boxes," and allowing the reader to thoroughly understand the material.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not all that good
This book contains a minimal amount of information required for a textbook for a computer architecture course. The book contains a tear out cardboard page with a very good summary of MIPS assembly language. This, unfortunately, is the most useful portion of the book. Most likely, teachers use it because it is written by P&H, and is cheaper than their book Computer Architecture: a quantitative approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book about ideas and concepts
Working with 3D for years as a hobby, my knowledge isn't extensive, but I had a few ideas of what should be covered in a book on lighting and rendering. Little did I know just how few my ideas were. The current edition of Digital Lighting and Rendering was released in early 2006 and looks to succeed the first edition, which came out in 2000 and has been used as a textbook in some computer arts classes. It adds newer techniques and ideas, such as sub-surface scattering, and some concepts, such as global illumination and ambient occlusion are expanded and placed throughout the book. The book is accessible for readers who have at least some experience with 3D software.
5-0 out of 5 stars A generous update from the 1st Edition
The author has extensively updated this industry standard since its first release six years ago, and the result is a book that should absolutely be on every Color & Light Artist's shelf. What was a very good reference is now even better, with more sage advice, clear and logical insight regarding lighting different kinds of scenes (e.g. indoor, outdoor, daytime, nighttime), more information on technologies that have become popular in recent years (such as global illumination), and the addition of complementary materials at the author's web site.I have been using the 1st Edition of this book as a required text in my rendering classes for several years, and this much anticipated new version ties in even better.Even if you already own the 1st Edition, you are likely to find this update a worthwhile purchase.I would love to see this book's sister, Digital Texturing & Painting, rise to the same level of insight and clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent tool !!
Very usefull and instructive book. It covers all aspects of digital light and the natural one, the author doesn't apply the vast information covered to an especific software, so you can apply all this rich information with the software that you actually use. This book is a must for every people that whant to go deep in to digital light and renderings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Neural Networks Foundations
This is the first book for everyone interested in the subject. A well-written and well-illutrated encyclopedia of Neural projects, including all the fundamental questions at the forefront of research in Neural Networks. I believe this is the reason for it beeing widely referenced by almost all the authors in the subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review
I bought this book for some research I'm currently conducting, which deals with a wide gamut of topics, ranging from adaptive noise cancellation to fuzzy clustering to image recognition.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very Mathematical

5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive, Complete, Erudite, wonderful
I first learned photoshop from an earlier edition of this book. Throughout its many editions it's remained among the very best. At a time when Photoshop is becoming more and more daunting to learn and keep-up-with, and when many of the books therefore present a more simplistic, or at least restrictive, approach to the subject, and where hype is beginning to dominate the field, it's a pleasure to find this solid, authorative treatise continuing to shine. It's not an easy read--one of these one page per thought books--but it's got an awful lot of great information in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Requiem for the Best
This book, and its predecessors for each iteration of Photoshop, are amongst the finest of the many instructional manuals on the software. This is because the book is not only comprehensive, but provides highly effective tutorials. These tutorials start with an image on the accompanying CD and lead the reader to modify that image step by step to a final image.Because of my admiration, I was shocked to read in the introduction that this was to be the last in the series. We will have to find our way through future Photoshop versions through other means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth but very clear and logical explainations
I have been using Photoshop since 1992, so I knew it fairly well before I bought this book, but my experience was mainly in graphical design. I am now focusing on photography. I have read a lot of confusing and conflicting advice on how to use Photoshop to get the most out of your photos and have an efficient "workflow", so I wanted a book to clear things up for me. I bought this based on several published recommendations. I have worked my way about 2/3rd through it and I have found it to be excellent in all respects. It's not a book for someone who wants a quick once-over, but if you want to really become an expert with Photoshop for photography, this book is great. It is detailed but interesting and very well written, with clear and detailed walk-throughs. It would make an excellent course text and contains guidance thereto. I love it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for those who estimate software
This book took a concept that is easy to make very complex and was able to boil it down into fairly easy to understand terms. In my work group, we have project managers that have been estimating projects for many years. We've all gotten something out of the book, and it has a valuable space on our bookshelf.
5-0 out of 5 stars Software Estimation as an Art
McConnell immediately differentiates between software estimation as a science and software estimation as an art within the first pages of the introduction to this work - he explains that while software estimation research is currently focused on improving estimation techniques so that project results are achieved within +/- 5% of esimated results, the techniques of which are best included in commerical software estimation tools that are used to pursue the science of estimation for very large projects, the typical software organization struggles to avoid estimates that are incorrect by 100% or more, and Software Estimation discusses the estimation techniques comprising, although not limited to, the art of estimation that will reduce estimation error to about 25% or less, which is what the vast majority of software projects need. This book is absolutely the best software estimation text I have read to date. As Joel Spolsky mentions on the back cover of the book, the vast majority of software project managers still think that estimates are based on multiples of a gut feel. This philosophy completely ignores the vast body of research and hands-on experience of the last few decades. McConnell explains with sufficient depth all of the ways to create "ball park" estimates, and if there is one chapter of this book that you read, Chapter 4 "Where Does Estimation Error Come From?" is the one that I recommend - the explanation of the Cone of Uncertainty is so well explained that anyone can understand it. Although I have never read Code Complete by the same author, I did purchase Rapid Development several years ago - and I must say that McConnell (or at least his editors) has vastly improved his writing skills. This book is less than half the size of Rapid Development, and while I fell asleep while reading that book I was able to conduct a cursory reading of over half of Software Estimation in one evening and immediately apply some of its concepts on a work project the following day. A great modern follow-up to The Mythical Man-Month by Brooks and an excellent primer to reading SEI's Estimating Software-Intensive Systems by Stutzke on the science of estimation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an excellent source for estimation of software projects
I must admit, I was very surprised to see an excellent source on software development time and cost estimation from Microsoft Press. However, when I saw that the author was Steve McConnell, the author of Code Complete (which I thought was a great book) I knew that this book would have something to offer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not recommanded
This book is hard to read. The samples are difficult to follow. There is no coherent between chapters. It was a rush. Not recommanded.

4-0 out of 5 stars SQL Server 2005 Integration Services
Over the years I have come to rely on my wrox books. Here is another good one outlining a new technology in an easy to follow and easy to find structure. One of the best things about this book is that you do not need to have any prior DTS experience as the new SSIS engine from SQL has been totally rebuilt and has very little in common with it's precursor.
2-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but a little bit disappointing too
I bought this book and had a lot of expectations. 10 Writers were involved to write this book which covers a complete new software tool from Microsoft, introduced with the newly released SQL Server 2005 replacing the DTS Service of SQL Server 2000 and earlier Versions plus adding tons of new features to the enterprise Database Solution which were previously unavailable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intentionally slow-paced; this is a book on fundamentals
Many other reviewers have, with some justification, bemoaned the crunchingly slow pace of this book.Yes, the book moves through its examples slowly.Yes, sometimes Beck's mock humility comes off more than a little snide. It's not perfect on those counts, but please keep in mind that this is a book about a _process_, not a _result_.
1-0 out of 5 stars Great topic, but less filling
Non-coders will have problems with this book because Test Driven Development is about the process of development. Specifically, this book expounds, in fine detail, the XP concept of writing tests before the implementation and how to use the results from the tests to drive another XP concept: emergent design.
4-0 out of 5 stars Step by step introduction to Test Driven Development
I liked the step by step approach of this book, because it profoundly demonstrates how TDD looks and feels. No endless pages of theories and theorems, but a real-world example end-to-end. ... Read more

I surprised how much information was packed into this book. Colin really holds nothing back, but doesn't forget about the beginners in the start of the book where he explains the basics. This allows the reader to quickly move into the more advanced sections and ultimately end up with a wealth of knowledge that came from one head.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just another book......
This book is targeted to users that are not new to programming. So, that's why I got the book since I know C++ and Java pretty well. But even if I didn't, and i knew some JavaScript (AC is JavaScript pretty much), I would also be considered as the target reader. With that said, these are my thoughts:
5-0 out of 5 stars it's essential if you want to program flash
since actionscript 3.0 has hit the scene in flex 2.0 and flash 9 is right around the corner, i'm slightly hesitant to recommend this book today (september 2006). BUT, the book is still great and if you are serious about programming in flash, i would say that it's essential material to learn. it's not a reference (although there is a small reference in the book) and it's not about how to program animation or do "cool" things in flash. it's about how to create custom classes and how to do it properly using best practices in flash. that's pretty much it. even as AS 3.0 crawls onto the scene, this book still gives a solid foundation and, from what i know about AS 3.0 so far, nothing you learn here will hinder you as you eventually move on to AS 3.0. the next version of actionscript will simply build upon what AS 2.0 has done. if you are still writing classes the old fashioned AS 1.0 way and feel like it's time to move forward, buy this book. if you've never written classes before, in any language, this book will show you how and provide a great foundation in doing so.

3-0 out of 5 stars Target Audiance - Choose Wisely
This book is certainly technically sound. That being said, I find the notation confusing and the text relatively inacessible. The book is likely a good selection for someone wanting to study the innermost mathematical details of modern signal processing.Unfortunately, the text spends less time on actual implimentation and usage than would be preferable for audiances focussed on real world applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent collection of signal processing math
this book is really good for a signal processing researcher.
5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Printing, not 2nd Edition.
I do not know about the contents of this book yet, but one thing I can tell is that the book is still in the first edition(unlike some review), but it's the second printing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best video book out there
I have several excellent books on video, and I have to say that this book is easily the best.Charles Poynton covers all of the basics in a very understandable and readable fashion.Video is a complicated topic, and one that is not well understood. There are many facets of video that are commonly confused, such as the differences, benefits and drawbacks of interlaced versus progressive scan video, or the difference between pixels and lines of resolution.Digital Video and HDTV Algorithms and Interfaces is very well written, and is a must-read for any serious video professional or hobbyist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on video technology
"Digital Video and HDTV Algorithms and Interfaces" is definitely the best book on video and television I have ever hold in my hands.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not easy
I bought this book to understand basics and fundementals , it's quite organized and has a lot of info. in it , but you must have a good background to keep on reading and even you must have a lot of refrences to go back to while reading this book, at the first chapters there are instants that you need to go to chapter 16 to read then come back, I say this book is wonderfull if you have a good solid background ( mathematically and numericaly in Video standers and transforms... ). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure!
This series is a treasure to keep. The book is filled with great diagrams and very easy to understand language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
First is Knuth, second is Corman that brings the art of algorithms closer to earth. Then is Sedgewick. This book provides very good balance between theory and practice and lets the practitioners know that programming is a bit more than just writing "if" and "for" and that the art of algorithms is not only art but also science. This book evolved from early editions (Algorithms in C, 1990) and keeps the standard. These two volumes is the must for every serious programmer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent combination of books
Sedgewick's publisher (Addison-Wesley) has gathered his two books, Algorithms in Java, parts 1-5, into one resource for developers. Convenient, for you now have something that spans the most common algorithms encountered during computer programming. Logically, the combination of the two volumes is very coherent. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Java Book That Hits Multiple Audiences
There is a lot of good information in this book for the experienced programmer who is new to Java.I just moved to a new team that is doing Java development although I come from a C++ background. This book is especially helpful to people coming from a C++ background because it calls out places where the languages differ. In the early chapters, you could skim the topics and read just these to get up to speed. However, it also has the details for people with other backgrounds such as Visual Basic or COBOL.The first six chapters deal with the fundamentals of the language. However, chapters 7-10 deal with Swing and Applets.I do not consider either of these to be truly fundamentals, and the examples in chapters 11-13 are cluttered by Swing.I would prefer that these topics have separate treatment in Volume II.It is also odd that JAR files and Properties are buried at the end of chapter 10 (Applets). However, these are minor complaints on an overall solid introduction to the Java programming language. If you find yourself at the point of making the switch to Java, I think this is the best book available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Core Java2 volumeI6th Edition
When I saw this seller list NEW for his book, I decided to buy it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Great Book. A scholarly tutorial.
This is a book written by someone who not only knows Java but is an actual computer scientist with experience in the corporate world (read his brief bio on the back cover.) He is also a college professor at San Jose State University and thus, unlike too many authors of programming books at certain publishers, his qualifications aren't summed up by statements like " . . . has been programming since he was 13 years old, " or, " . . . is a programmer at a Fortune 100 company on Wall Street." This book teaches you all of the fine details that "The Java Programming Language Guide" sometimes leaves out. That book, one of whose authors is James Gosling, is the only book that exceeds Horstmann's effort here, however it is not a tutorial and thus you need Horstmann's text alongside it. His treatment of "Objects and Classes" (chapter 4) and "Inheritance" (chapter 5) are alone worth the price of the book. This is a rigorous and challenging book and it should not be your first book in Java programming. After you've finished with Walter Savitch's Java textbook then purchase "The Java Programming Language Guide" and "Core Java" (both volumes) and see what computer programming is really all about (hint: it's not about setting up database driven websites to sell trinkets or to facilitate your blogging.) ...
