Non-Working Disk
The disk that came with the book is a data disk only, and does not contain the program that created the data.That is why the data disk is not a workable disk, unless you have The Medical Manager installed on your computer!The book is too geared to be used with the Medical Manager Software Program, and is difficult to read it as a stand alone book.
Medical Manager review
I am an instructor for the Medical Manager class and have been for over 5 years.I have used almost every version possible with the Medical Manager.This is a fairly good book for students to learn from.As long as the person reads the instructions and then looks at the exercises, they should have NO problems.However, if the person just looks at the exercise and does not read the material, they may have difficulty.Some of the exercise/pictures are different then the actual reading part but not too many.Overall this book makes it fairly simple to learn this program.

Great Book
I've gotten about 6 chapters into this book and I love it.I've been developing Java for almost 7 years and am currently teaching myself Agile principles and this book comes as a great help.

I wanted to like it!
I'm not a beginning programmer, or even an absolute Java novice, so maybe this book isn't really aimed at me.My biggest gripe is that the code snippets continue on and on making the book very poor for anything other than cover-to-cover reading.

This book is a fantastic primer to not only the java language, but to agile methods and junit as well.The author does a great job of introducing many concepts in a way that is easy to digest without being slow.However, seasoned java programmers may get frustrated with the early chapters that speak to basic java while introducing the bread and butter of junit. This is only for the first 150 pages or so.The information and lessons on refactoring, best practices, and junit are well worth it though.The best part of the book is the author's style.He does not speak down to the reader with overly high vocabulary, or with an "I am all knowing" attitude, but rather he uses a conversational tone with an emphasis on making the topic clear concise and to the point. ... Good intro to shaders
This is a well written book covering the Cg shading language. It contains a lot of useful information about Cg and graphics programming techniques in general. Unfortunately, I felt like it didn't cover as much of Cg as I would have liked, making the book less useful than it could have been. Good introduction to Cg

An excellent reference for System Administrators
Power UNIX and Linux users will want to expand their skills. It's inevitable. Some will get frustrated and drop out and some will work their way through it.
Great reference, full of examples, for all UNIX/Linux/BSD users
At first glance, this book seems like a typical O'Reilly book: a narrow title, rich in material, and is beneficial to a much wider audience than the title reveals. It covers a wide range of system administration subjects and goes way beyond just the essentials.
Want to understand Unix and not just use it? This is the book.
This book is for the reader that wants to move beyond the basic, high level overview Unix book and truly understand the Unix system and why it invokes passion from it's fan base. This book could be used by the beginning user, but the novice or casual reader may find this book overwhelming in the sheer level of information it provides. If you are a system administrator, you will find this book is THE book you refer to the most, to the point you may end up keeping this book close to your Unix system at all times. Excellent bible for the bumbling novice
First I need to give a nod to "Gunny", the reviewer who convinced me to purchase this book: Thank you!This is truly the best Illustrator guide available for beginners, who need to find their painful path through the inscrutable thicket of Illustrator, who need to get a graphic project done, quickly.
Excellent, As Usual
Visual Quick Start Guides and I were introduced in college. Each one I have used is: supremely instructive, light to nonexistent on self absorbed asides (a blessed relief), and meaty...very meaty. The paper isn't glossy, the images aren't in color, you get no adorable photos of the author with their children frolicking on the sands of Southern California. But you get information about how to use Adobe products (and anything else you want to tackle) so that you, in your miserable Midwestern hovel, far from the smiling shores of the Pacific rim, can accomplish your tasks for your demanding and sniffy clients and get paid, and not go to the poor house! Tres cool, no?

Broad and deep coverage
The two books of this series (Core Reference & Advanced Topics) offer broad and deep coverage of ASP.NET.
Written by somebody who knows what he is talking about
Basics of .net framework is presented in aclear and lucid style.This book is a joy to read and .by the way there is not much difference in content wise between applied .Net framework programming and this book. My only worry is the speed at which microsoft is pushing .net versions as if there is no tommorrow! [Subsequently the catch up I have to do on reading all this!]

FINALLY a book geared at the experienced developer...
If you need to do more than just write sample code for tutorials, then this is the book for you. It provides valuable coverage of the ASP.NET landscape. I learned things about web services I never knew I could do with .NET.

Ultimate ESB book
Frankly, I feel that some reviewers misunderstand the purpose of this book. In my opinion, for a SOA focussed professional who needs to know the role of SOA, this book is a gem! Any of us who have had the challenge of explaining messaging technology should be grateful about reading this book.
All sales, no sizzle
I was hoping that this book would go through the history of technology leading up to the ESB, discuss how the ESB solves the problems presented by previous solutions and talk about some best practices for building ESBs.
Excellent book.
This book is the definitive guide on ESB - excellent coverage on fundamentals, patterns and implementation models. I had read quite a few books around SOA and Web Services, some good, others not so good... but this book really stands out stressing the importance of ESB. The concepts were covered in sufficient details for any aspiring SOA developer. It all gives you a very good idea what you would need to consider when deciding to implement a real-world SOA solution in your organization.

high speed circuitlayouttechniques
I bought this book based on a friend's recommendation seven years ago. I have used this book along with Henry Ott's book as a desk top reference for the past seven years.

Not the final word by any means, but a good introduction
Add Johnson and Graham to the list of people who can write large, highly technical books full of useful, pertinent information, and package it all in a way that's mostly very readable and which mixes just the right blend of rigorous academic structure with good old-fashioned "when all else fails, you might get away with this" hacks. This book is by no means a thorough, academic grounding in the subject matter, but it works well as an introduction for people who have some background in conventional electronics, yet little or no background in the specifics of high-speed digital design.
Mostly a very solid book
Great book.BTW, the author lists a LOT of errata on his website, enough to take over an hour to mark up my copy (5th printing).Although it's nice he documents this so well, it's a pain in the rear, so you may want to verify the edition you're buying to avoid this extra effort. On page vi, above ISBN, look for reverse sequence; example: "10 9 8 7" indicates 7th printing (cryptic, I know).Most recent printing is 15th edition (least amount of errata).The book is loaded with equations and diagrams.It would be nice to see more derivations, but at least the equations are there in the text, and in the appendix.I thought a few other reviewers were a bit harsh.The book is not perfect, but nevertheless a great resource.His second book is impressive, but more advanced; this original title is my "workhorse" book.also, check out his website (sigcon.com) for lots of articles and resources. ... Give you clear look of little giant
This book gives you the bird-eye view of the world's renowned photo management software, it has some useful information for amateur photographer who is intended to use iPhoto software, written in plain english. It is little interesting that one-thirds of the entire book contents are cover how to choose the right digital camera and how to take a good shot, of course, you don't have to worry since its another two-thirds of pages are fulled about some kind of "soft" thing, which is about acquire, manage, tag, retouch and share or archive your pictures.

JAVA is truly agile, thanks to Anil Hemrajani!
I just read this book, Agile Java Development with Spring, Hibernate and Eclipse, and I find it the best Java book ever written on earth...Never have I read anything as clear and industry-driven as your book..Thanks for the clear explanation!!

A great book, too bad you need to read it twice.
I've read a lot of books, of which many are conceptual, academic or technical or just hands-on cookbooks. The problem with "Agile Java Development with..." is that it fits none of the above categories. It feels like an attempt to a hands-on experience kind of book (there's a lot of "Let's get to the action!" phrases and then fails to deliver and just discusses another subject), but Raj delivers mostly academic unstructured comments on every aspect of the subject matter. Don't get me wrong, the book has all the information you need to get started and learn tons more from references Raj gives you, but the problem is: there's no structure to his story telling. For example, In every chapter when he's discussing a subject, he tends to reference/compare to other subjects that haven't been covered yet; he even adds a "(as covered in Chapter X)". Seriously, you actually have to have read the book in order to understand many of the comparisons and references he makes.
Good "Agile Java" command line to GUI tutorial using the Spring/Hibernate/Eclipse
Having spent most of my last couple of years using Eclipse based GUI to build Java web apps, I don't have much exposure to doing it at the command line.Mainly I have never used Ant because the GUI tools shelter me from it nicely.But this book did a very good job of starting at the command line and then eventually moving to using Eclipse.It covered a great deal of ground but well enough to whet your appetite to look further into a wide variety of technologies surrounding "Agile Java .." development.

Dont go for 3rd edition even though it is a great text book!!!!!!!
The Fourth edition is being scheduled to be released in next month(sep 2006/oct 2006). So my advice is to wait for that textbook of new edition which costs $79.95 in the amazon itself

Perfectly confusing!
Too much information presented in a complicated format. It has it all but not a book to learn from. I don't recomend this to those who really want to understand the computer architecture and be able to design and calculate. Very difficult to understand and make sense of problems.

Thorough book, tough questions
This book is excellent - I've never seen another computer science book of its type or quality.It is essentially a hardware book for non-EE types; however, the authors literally leave no stone unturned (in chapter 5, for example, they state, "we have only included examples of memory designs that have found their way into commercial implementations").If a computer has ever, in the history of computing, used a particular design approach, that approach is detailed and compared carefully against all other existing approaches.When I first saw the size of the book, I was amazed that anybody could fill so much text with any information (useful or not) - after reading the first few chapters, I was amazed that they could fit so much information into such a relatively small space!

A "Must-Have" For Every Modeling Job
Silverston's books (volume 1 and volume 2) are a "must-have" for any data modeler at the onset of a new project. The books are nicely organized by subject-area (for example, "People and Organizations" or "Human Resources" or "Health Care") and the table-of-contents and indicies are rich and very helpful. You can use these books as your main reference books for every question, meeting, inquiry regarding your modeling work (ex: "why did you model currency in this way?" Or "How do you model vendor and client relationships?".
The Resource Book is just that
We ordered this book because we are about to begin designing a new information system for our company.Silverston's book addresses many of the issues we found ourselves wrestling with (in designing the CRM portion of the system for instance), and it presents options with the pros and cons of each.

Two surprises I didn't like
The text of this book was generally good - although it seemed padded out with a massive listing of model metadata.The book comes with a CD.The first surprise was, the CD does not include the Data Definition Language (DDL) for its sample models... there's an extra cost for that.My question to the publisher would be, what good is the CD you provide for free?

Disappointingly poor index
I'm new to PHP and MySQL, but a programmer for over 3 decades. I'm customizing some PHP code, using code examples for ideas. When I (a) see something I want to understand better or (b) want to find the PHP analog for basic functions, I naturally turn to the index to try to find the information I need. However, I found the index very disappointing because of what it doesn't have. For example, simple and basic keywords are not in the index: "comment", "logical operator", "and", "or", etc. I'm going to have order a different book as a PHP reference.

The best starting point to php and mysql
I bought this book with the hope I could learn just enought to get me started with web application development. I only hadlittle programming experience at that time, I I didn't even have any experience with databases. Well. This book was the perfect introduction to web applications. From security to authentication, from php basics to multi-table join sql queries, this book got me into this world, and I appreciate it so much because I am working now in web development, thanks to what I learned from here.
Excellent Introduction Book & Reference
This book is an excellent introduction to PHP, MySQL, and the interaction of the two. It has a few chapters introducing PHP, then a few introducing MySQL, and then walks through the steps necessaryto build a functioning dynamic website. They also include an elaborate and detailed case study of a Winestore application the author's developed.

Best choice for advanced data modeling.
If you will got this book, you will got perfect template model.

Is it worth buying a book for only one chapter?
Yes, it is. Because the other chapters have all sorts of useful content as well. This book covers Manufacturing, Telecommunications, Health Care, Insurance, Financial Services, Professional Services, Travel, and e-Commerce. Most companies, even if they aren't in those sectors, use the services of companies that are (or may do a little bit of them - offer insurance on their products, for example), and if you need to include these areas in your model, in more detail than was covered in volume 1 (the core Universal Data Model book), then this is the place to start. If you are in one of these areas, then the specific chapter has a lot of useful stuff (I have worked in Travel, Telecommunications and Professional Services), but it is well worth checking out the other models for ideas that can be re-used in your area.

tackles a conceptual discontuity
Agarwal and Lang offer a pedagogy to tackle a serious disconnect that often arises in this field. At the low level of physics and electrical engineering, the EE student learns of basic device physics of such circuit elements as a PN diode or a MOSFET. Everything here is inherently analog. So you get I-V curves that characterise the devices, say. The book gives this good coverage.

Awesome book -- Great information
This being my first book about databases, I find that it explains the topic at hand very well, and concisely. While database design can be daunting of a task, the book guides the reader through it step by step, explaining exactly why something is like it is. The first chapters discuss the different models that were in use and what is becoming mainstream right now. Very easy to read, but some technological insight is suggested when starting this.

Great Book, unless you got the Interntional Edition!!
Great text book, but like all students I was looking for the cheapest price tag. I got the international edition for half the price, however, I discovered that it was missing pages, though the cover claims that it has the exact same content as US Edition. It is also missing a CD. The US Edition comes with 2 CD's including the SQL Server CD, which the international edition doesn't come with.
Best DB Design and DB Theory book on the market!!!!
This book is top notch...I've read many DB design books, but this one took the cake..When I took my database design class at my university, the professor was great, but the book was even BETTER!!!! I never knew about "normalizing data" until I saw this book and took the class!!! The theory, concepts, examples, and illustrations are 5-star quality!! I still use this book today, and its more than a year passed now, when I need to look up or refresh myself on a concept...Excellent learning tool, as well as a great reference for DB design....Only one problem, the book is "big" in size!!! The First VSTS Book You Should Read
This book is a terrific high to mid level introduction to Visual Studio Team System, Microsoft Solutions Framework, and the overall philosophies and strategies behind Microsoft's ambitious undertaking. It provides terrific VSTS coverage, but it's also one the best overviews of modern software development approaches available today.
Highly Recommended
Gives a nice peek into the "why" as opposed to the "how". I have read all the VSTS books that are out there right now and I appriciated this one very much. It was an easy read, but very informative.

Wealth of theory and practices
This book provides wealth of theory and practices for software development. It throughly explained the ideas behind Visual Studio Team Studio, just like the author said, it's not a how-to book, but will let you know why VSTS provides those functionalities, and what benefit would you get if you follow the practices.
