5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book about Postfix
I wasn't looking for esoteric information on how to administer Sendmail. I was looking for a book on Postfix and that's what the author provided. I got the book based a lot on the quality of O'Reilly books and the editor's reputation. Andy Oram is a top notch editor. I recommend this book to any Linux or UNIX person wanting to substitute Postfix for sendmail. Postfix is a drop in replacement for systems configured for sendmail but Postfix is not a monlithic program with lots of vulnerabilities. The author expalins that perfectly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference guide for PostFix
PostFix is a replacement mail server, MTA, for Unix based systems that
2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
If you're looking for a comprehensive guide on setting up a Postfix mail server, then this isn't the book for you.For those that are already familiar with setting up MTAs, the information provided in "The Definitive Guide" is probably enough, but this book only covers a subset of the Postfix configuration parameters and does not provide the step-by-step instructions that many people may be expecting. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Kids, maybe. For adult hobbyists it comes up short.
I should start off by saying that I'm not a kid, nor did I buy this and give it to a kid. I am 22 and I'm working on a completely hand-built robot. Since nobody else has written a review from this perspective - the adult hobbyist - I thought I would

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very In-Depth, Not a lot of code examples
I went out and purchased this book based on some good reviews here at Amazon. I was really unimpressed with it. It is much less a primer on how to program "AI" types of apps with .NET, and much more a manual of how to use Microsoft applications like their speech services and data mining.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great primer book on Microsoft technologies for Intelligent Apps
Building Intelligent .NET Applications is an excellent primer book into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the business world, specifically related to Microsoft technologies.
2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Book
I recently purchased this book on Amazon. As an experienced .NET software developer, I am always keen on books that will expand my knowledge base in this area, and AI has been a particular interest of mine lately.Having read through much of the book, I have found it very disappointing.I would sum it up as a very shallow introduction to AI topics (often referred to as "Narrow AI") such as Data Mining. This book is more a manual on how to use Microsoft technologies, and does not include anywhere near the depth or practical examples needed on the subjects presented.I have personally found better info online. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
Great book, exactly what I needed. I'm pretty good with Sendmail, but there is nothing like just looking up an issue and following through a solution. I would recommend this to anyone who works with Sendmail!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has something about sendmail for everyone
This book has something about sendmail for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone who administers sendmail
Working with sendmail can be very challenging at times; while the documentation for it is very complete, finding real-life use-cases can be tough and messing up a configuration is very easy. Fortunately the sendmail authors and community adopted the m4 language to help make building and managing sendmail configurations less painful (I remember having bad dreams about sendmail configuration language when I started learning it). Even with m4, understanding what goes where when and why in a sendmail configuration file can be a real challenge.

3-0 out of 5 stars Companion is Worthless by Itself
When they said "Companion," they didn't mean Companion for Sendmail version 8.13; they ment Companion for "Sendmail, 3rd edition."This book only covers the updates between 8.12 and 8.13.If you don't know what 8.12 does in the first place, you need to get "Sendmail, 3rd edition" in addition to this one. Other than that, it's a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short book for experts
This is a very short, but well written and organized book primarily intended for experts. It doesn't introduce sendmail, or provide complete overviews of the system. It covers topics specific to sendmail 8.13. I'm not quite sure why the didn't just come out with another version of the Sendmail book, but they didn't. What you get instead is this book which is a kind of addendum. Buy this book only in conjunction with the Sendmail book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fighting spam
This slim book documents the latest major release of sendmail. It assumes that you are already well familiar with running an earlier sendmail. The author does not waste your time going over generic properties of sendmail that have been true for years.

2-0 out of 5 stars Two small guides in one (with minimal pix and info)
I understand that guides are for multiple platforms, but this is silly. Prima did the whole SC:DA guide twice. Once for PS2/GC and again for XBOX 360/PC. Its two small books in one. But for about the price of two (retail of $20 rather than $12 which is the usual price for the skinny guides).

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous resource
This book is an immense collection of research on the application of complex systems to urban spatial analysis. While this book is not extensive and is probably not meant as a textbook on complex systems in its entirety, I highly recommend it for those interested in urban spatial analysis. The applications of the techniques go beyond geography and are useful in sociology, economics, or urban planning. A caveat that I should add is that the book is quite dense with methods and formulas and is probably not best to approach this book without some knowledge of advanced statistics. However, the theoretical overviews provided more than allow for those without this background to get something out of it. In short, if you are a graduate student, professor, or researcher I'd recommend this book for an insightful and important take on the nature of cities and urban analysis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perl-intensive book on web crawler design
A spider (also known as a web crawler or web robot) is a program which browses the World Wide Web in a methodical, automated manner. This book is about how to create programs that perform the functions of a web crawler, with most of the Hacks being written in Perl. Like the rest of the Hacks series, this book presents 100 bite-sized chunks of code or technique to tackle specific activities. In this book these range from the simple - how to download a set of image files - to the complex - cross-referring the output from one site with another to generate a third set of data. No matter what the complexity, each hack is clearly explained, with the code samples balanced with instructions, examples and notes on how to hack the hack.
2-0 out of 5 stars what is in a name?
well, sometimes a generalizing lie.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs more variety of languages
Nearly all of the examples were written using Perl, but the few pages written with PHP contained some very useful nuggets!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of working code but not much of a tutorial
Bots are the simplest form of Internet-aware programs in that they simply carry out a repetitive task once unleashed on the web. A spider travels the web in a complex fashion, moving from one part of the World Wide Web to another collecting information from one site and then jumping to another based on that information. An aggregator is a bot that is designed to log into several user accounts and retrieve similar information.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not much information for such a long book
The essence of this book could probably have been compressed into a few chapters. I read the whole thing in about a day, skimming over many sections (e.g. the structure of HTML, including discussion of anchor tags) that I, like most programmers, already know well. I think I would have preferred a focussed tutorial on Heaton's Bot package instead of a detailed but boring treatment of every technology (however elementary) used in the process of constructing spiders and bots.5-0 out of 5 stars Create a Object Oriented Bot Package Step by Step
I use this book as a supplement to a class that I teach, as it gives the students the necessary stills to programmatically spider, and generally access, information on the Net.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Details on Kismet
The book is well structured, and includes many photos and diagrams. I found it useful because I work exactly on the same topic. However, most of its content can be found elsewhere (in published articles). The accompanying CD-ROM includes very interesting videos, although I think they can also be found elsewhere. In summay, I definitely recommend this book, but only if you are really interested in the topic and/or in Kismet, and you want to know as many details as you can. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Much improved over the 1st edition
This is one of those rare books that was a mess in its first incarnation that has been cleaned up, had new material added, and turns out to be quite helpful in its second edition. It is assumed that the reader already knows Java, as this is not a primer in that language. The first half of the book is a very informal introduction to AI concepts relevant to the construction of intelligent agents. The second half of the book is where the author presents his own design and implementation of a Java framework for constructing intelligent agents along with several applications. The author does a good job of showing algorithms in numbered steps, presenting mathematics clearly when applicable - such as in the section on neural networks, and having numerous clear illustrations. There are exercises at the conclusion of each chapter that are unsolved because most of them are programming assignments.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Intro to AI but missing source file
I like the highbrow reviews, but, I can tell *none* of these people actually used any of the code. There are a few bugs in the CIAgent class and there is a missing file for the infofilter class.

This book was a disappointment. While first reading the book I thought it was great. However, after I tried actually configuring the exim program I realized this book included only superficial examples. Any serious configuration required an in-depth understanding of the exim program far beyond the overview of this book. The necessary bits of information are scattered throughout the book. Unfortunately, these bit were often not referenced in the Index. This required my reading large sections trying locate a specific bit of information. The book's index is weak. It often includes references to variables, options and features that requires the specific name of the information being sought to locate. In contrast Exim's downloadable pdf documentation has the advantage of being quickly computer searchable. After being frustrated with this book I turned to the downloadable documentation and found it much more useful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Out of date, but still a good starting point
Exim is fairly straightforward for an MTA, though I found I needed to understand a bunch of concepts before I knew what Exim was doing.Exim: The Mail Transfer Agent does an excellent job of covering those concepts, much better than the official documentation, and for that this is essential reading for Exim users. This is the 1st edition, however, and only covers Exim release 3, so many of the important things that you might want to do with Exim that are easy to do in Exim 4 are not covered. You will need the official Exim website to complete your education and get up and running.3-0 out of 5 stars Good supplement to official documentation
This won't replace the official documentation -- especially since it covers an old outdated version of EXIM -- but covers enough to be worthwhile as a supplement. Still, I was rather disappointed that much of what I was trying to do (such as set up spam filtering) wasn't covered by the book, and that I had to go online and read through back mailing list archives and read official documentation to get the job done. From any other publisher I wouldn't feel too bad about that, but from O'Reilly I expect better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best to learn new robotic concept

3-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced and explains the obvious
The only reason I am giving this book three stars is that no other serious publication I know of discusses behavior based robotics. However, that being said, this book uses a lot of pages and costs a lot of dollars to explain a rather simple concept. It is an elegant concept, and I do take my hat off to Mr. Arkin for getting to the heart of the matter clearly and with good illustrations. But is it a concept that requires almost 500 pages? I don't really think so. Simply put, behavior-based robotics does not use an internal model of its environment. For instance, there is no programming in the robot of what a chair looks like, or what kind of surface the robot is moving on - all the information is gleaned from the input of the robot's sensors. The robot uses that information to react to the changes in its environment as those changes occur. State machines are at the heart of the design of any behavior-based robot. For example, a foraging robot would probably have four states describing its behavior in response to its sensors: wandering and looking for food, picking up food, homing towards the nest, and avoiding obstacles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best single text on behaviour-based robotics
Outstanding introduction to the field of behaviour-based robot control. Completely accessible to the non-expert. It starts off with a good treatment of perception and action in animals as motivation. Goes on to discuss different aspects of behavioural control, including formal methods, architectures, various implementations, theoretical limitations, and so on.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction
Wooldridge's book is a great introduction that guides the reader from motivations, over several agent architectures through to chapters about interaction, methodology and much more. It gets very close to Weiss's book on Distributed Artificial Intelligence but presents a more readable treatise leaving out some of the details and formalisms. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
This book is great to read and highly informative! You can learn about intelligent agents from one of the big names in Agent research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with lot of references
This book gives a clear overview over the board topic of MultiAgent Systems. Explainations are easy to follow and the references at the back of the book are particularly useful for those who want to dig deeper into any specific topic. This book itself will not make one an expert in the field but it provide all necessary knowledge for further independent study.Read more
