it is surprising to find that textbook like this did a remarkable good job in exploiting the density matrix formalism and also the related theoretical techniques in quantum dissipative systems. If you are interested in the quantum treatment, Chapter 3 and 6 are great!

It is a very good book:

The field of nonlinear optics is actually much more general in scope than the name implies, and it finds large intersection with quantum mechanics, atomic physics and physical chemistry. It has applications in virtually all physical and life sciences. It's thus surprising that for such a useful and interesting subject, there would be such a shortage of good books! Fortunately, this book is excellent, and covers the subject thoroughly in both theory and application. An interesting feature of the book is that it covers the basic theory first from a classical perspective (i.e. nonlinear dipole polarization) and then rederives the basic results from semiclassical quantum theory. While the dielectric approach alone is adequate for solving problems (in fact, the quantum approach is useless in practice) the quantum background is fascinating to read and greatly helps in developing an intuitive picture of the physical mechanisms behind nonlinear processes. Boyd makes the nice choice of using Gaussian units, which is foreign to anybody but theoretical physics snobs but which eliminates a lot of useless notational complexity. Read more

Briefly speaking, everybody dealing seriiously with optical design, or even doing academic research, should keep this book on the desk all the time.

This is an excellent how-to book.It's the Home Depot of optics.But the almost complete lack of references (at least in the edition I reviewed) is a HUGE disappointment.This general text could have been so much more useful with a few selected hooks into the specialized literature.I hope the author and publisher consider this seriously for future editions.

This is the exact book i needed. It is an excellent summary of optical principles, and their utilization in optical systems. The design examples are great for illustrating the underlying principles. The level is great for professionals (as a review), or for anyone wanting to learn the principles of optics design. I highly recommend this book, there are lots of references for deeper study. This would be an excellent textbook for a class in optical design.

I've used Palik & Ghosh as an occasional reference work for years, because it's very good, and has chapters on most of the materials I've needed to work with--metals, silicon, and oxide dielectrics of one sort or another. Obviously a lot of work went into it, and it's a pretty specialized business, measuring and tabulating optical properties.I'd give it 5 stars for content, no doubt about it--an orchid for the editors: for their part of the deal they deserve our praise and thanks.Read more

This book has incredible potential. This could have been a great book. But unfortunately this book really sucks. The author only gives partial explanations while he is deriving formulas. There is not enough information given to follow and learn the subject matter while following his derivations. This book should only be used by people who know how to derive all the equations. So if you don't know the material before purchasing this book then don't waste your money.

This book is definately not for the novice.This book covers a large amount of material in its 777 pages.I got this book as an undergraduate for an advanced optics survey course.It was a little sparse on the explanations for an undergraduate.In graduate school however, this text has come in handy a number of times to fill in the gaps from other books or in heavy-duty problem solving.His coverage of gain saturation, broadening and line-widths I thought were especially usefull, as well as his coverage of the ABCD matrices.All in all, a must-have for your optics bookshelf.

The layout of this book is very pleasant.Nice, clean typography.The presentation is informal without sacrificing accuracy.However, the author seems to have a bad habit.When the explanation is straightforward (ie the reader can probably figure it out on his/her own), he does a fine job of explaining.When explanations are really needed, he relegates them to the problems.For example, in the sections dealing with the density matrix formalism, he assigns in the general formulation a characteristic decay constant to each energy level.So when it comes to working out the two-level problem, he should explain why he can justifiably "simplify" the problemby assigning a single decay time constant to the population difference between the two levels, instead of perserving the two different decay constants.This is one of the more subtle points in the whole density matrix presentation, yet he weasels out of the situation by leaving it to the problems section.The same pattern is repeated in the part where a comparison between the results of rate equations and density matrix are made.When it comes time to really point out the reason for the validity of the rate equations, he relegates it to the problems again. This is unfortunate, since a proper explanation would clearly demonstrate true insight into the physics. ... Read more

Without doubt, this is the best general survey of optical engineering, in or out of print.The book shows both the author's broad experience as well as his ability to apply theory to practice.The book is far superior in its selection of topics and in clarity and accuracy of presentation to the alternatives, particularly Shannon's book.The book is useful for engineers or scientists from other fields who need to learn some optics, and for experienced practitioners who need a reference and refresher on particular topics.For example, try to calculate the spectral radiance of a blackbody at a particular wavelength and temperature using the formula in your college physics text, then see how Smith treats the same topic; if you got within an order of magnitude of Smith's correct answer from the college text, give yourself a gold star.The second edition's only weakness was its sparse references; I haven't seen the third edition so this may have been improved.However, this still puts Smith's book ahead of Shannon's, which has no references whatever.If you only buy one book on optics, this should be it. ...
