4-0 out of 5 stars A book about ideas and concepts
Working with 3D for years as a hobby, my knowledge isn't extensive, but I had a few ideas of what should be covered in a book on lighting and rendering. Little did I know just how few my ideas were. The current edition of Digital Lighting and Rendering was released in early 2006 and looks to succeed the first edition, which came out in 2000 and has been used as a textbook in some computer arts classes. It adds newer techniques and ideas, such as sub-surface scattering, and some concepts, such as global illumination and ambient occlusion are expanded and placed throughout the book. The book is accessible for readers who have at least some experience with 3D software.
5-0 out of 5 stars A generous update from the 1st Edition
The author has extensively updated this industry standard since its first release six years ago, and the result is a book that should absolutely be on every Color & Light Artist's shelf. What was a very good reference is now even better, with more sage advice, clear and logical insight regarding lighting different kinds of scenes (e.g. indoor, outdoor, daytime, nighttime), more information on technologies that have become popular in recent years (such as global illumination), and the addition of complementary materials at the author's web site.I have been using the 1st Edition of this book as a required text in my rendering classes for several years, and this much anticipated new version ties in even better.Even if you already own the 1st Edition, you are likely to find this update a worthwhile purchase.I would love to see this book's sister, Digital Texturing & Painting, rise to the same level of insight and clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent tool !!
Very usefull and instructive book. It covers all aspects of digital light and the natural one, the author doesn't apply the vast information covered to an especific software, so you can apply all this rich information with the software that you actually use. This book is a must for every people that whant to go deep in to digital light and renderings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I was looking for
I acually read this book cover to cover theres alot of information in the book and its a great book to refer back to. Its really good as a companion with OpenGL. theres some directx stuff in it too but there seems to be more with OpenGL references.

4-0 out of 5 stars High level presentation of rendering techniques
This is not a book of algorithms on computer graphics methods. Instead, it is a comprehensive high-level survey of rendering techniques for making the graphics appear to occur in real time. This book has a very academic tone to it, and with the exception of chapter 3 which is on matrix transforms, it has precious few implementation details. Some reviewers have called it a successor to Foley and Van Dam's classic text, but I find this misleading. That book is primarily about computer graphics techniques, and is not that concerned with real-time issues. The bibliography of this book is extensive and impressive, and if you are doing research on the subject it is probably essential, especially if you are interested in the subject of virtual reality where real-time presentation is a must. However, if you are just looking for pseudocode or more "cool effects" to insert into a game or graphics program you are writing/programming you would do best to look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent survey/reference book
I was greatly disappointed with the first edition of this book. There is nothing new herein that cannot be culled from the latest presentations/whitepapers posted on NVIDIA/ATI websites, from the standpoint of real time graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up To Date View of the State of the Art
This book is a collection of forty-seven articles around the common theme of shading images in real time. Many of these effects have been common in the movie world for many years, but in that application the shading can be done on very expensive machines and the time it takes to produce an image is not important because the resulting image is to be shown on screen rather than immediately on a display. Now, with the increasing power in the PC's in widespread use, these techniques are being brought down to the standard desktop.
5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive collection of ready-to-use techniques
Shader X3: Advanced Rendering With DirectX And Open GL compiled, organized, and deftly edited by Wolfgang Engle (Senior Special FX Engineer at Wings Simulations) is packed from cover to cover with 630-pages of insightful new techniques, innovative approaches to common problems, as well as practical tools and tricks that will help in all areas of shader programming. All of the articles comprising Shader X3 evolved from the the working experiences of industry professionals, and all of the sections were expertly edited by shader programming experts. This comprehensive collection of ready-to-use techniques will enable even the most novice programmer to get up to speed quickly, and the more experienced programmers will find a wealth of insights and techniques to improve efficiency and avoid redundancies. Shader X3 is an essential, "user friendly", and highly recommended instructional reference for shader programmers.

3-0 out of 5 stars A must for every renderman user but dated.
For a long time this was the one and only reference book available to users and without it I would still be trying to decipher the Renderman documentation from Pixar.4-0 out of 5 stars A good technical introduction to RenderMan
For me, a beginner, the book was a little heavy and terse. Although it is written well, some concepts require more explaination. Also, the use of the C binded RenderMan API, is a little old, and makes it annoying when writing a RIB from the examples in the book. Regardless of the level of expertise required beforehand, it is a great reference book, and provides a good reference to all RenderMan users.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must reference for all Renderman users
Altough dated, "The Renderman companion" is a mandatory reference for all Renderman users. This book describes and explain all the aspects of the Renderman interface (in a no specific implementation way)and teach the art of shader programming, illustrating it with high qualitycolor plates. Renderman is a very complex system, but this book make itaffordable. The big missed item: no reference about the RIB file format. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars showoffs
I was disappointed not to find any code - only demos of applications on a few of the chapters (e.g radiosity tool, gpu terrain). IMHO it is better to have fewer topics/chapters and better coverage of each topic, with source code etc. As M. Severino 's review correctly states 'Each article is a source of ideas ', so don't expect to learn how to implement all the techniques in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced graphics hardware and software techniques
Wolfgang Engel edits SHADER X4: ADVANCED RENDERING TECHNIQUES, a toolbox of advanced graphics hardware and software techniques for any student of graphics programming. SHADER X4 especially lends to classroom use, with its articles covering everything from interlaced rendering and fog volume issues to real-time environment mapping and Shader subsystems. While the coverage can help novices, it's especially noted for advanced graphics programmers who will relish the equations, charts, and more technical discussions.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great book
This book is the best than previous editions.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction
It's been a while since I've cracked this book, but it provides an excellent introduction to raytracing. This coupled with "Realistic Image Synthesis Using Photon Mapping" and a good bit of patience, and you can produce truly amazing renderings.5-0 out of 5 stars A good high-level overview of ray tracing
This book covers the high points of the concepts involved with ray-tracing. It spends a fair amount of time talking about ray-object intersections, and also briefly discusses various approaches to accelerate the ray tracing process. This book does not go into a high level of detail on most topics, but does introduce them to the reader and discuss the pros and cons, which would give the reader enough knowledge to seek more detailed references on those subjects.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction
While some books treat ray tracing like a method for geniuses, this one try demystify it. The highlights, in general, go into "why" and "how" to do. Maybe the best parts are the "dictionary" of "ray-intersection" formulas and mainly the practical outline of a real ray tracer. This book don't teach you to do a ray tracer to Holywood, but it's a very good begin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource - thorough and well-written
I cannot praise this book more than the others already have. The book is about producing high-quality images using raytracing. It basically walks you through the creation of a fully-functional raytracer, discussing all the different algorithms and techniques that are needed along the way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best on modern rendering algorithms and code
This book mixes detailed algorithm descriptions with actual code in a book that never loses sight of the "big picture" of physically based ray tracing and image synthesis. Although it is very well written and is not a dry academic book at all, it would help if the reader is already familiar with basic computer graphic techniques, linear algebra, calculus, and optics in order to get the most out of this book. It was never meant to be a replacement for Foley & Van Dam's classic book on computer graphics, even though the first few chapters go over basic computer graphic material. The book includes a website where the source code of the authors' renderer can be downloaded. This code is very well organized and commented so that if you wish to lift individual pieces from the entire software package you can with just a little bit of work. I highly recommend this book to the programmer who wishes to implement physically based rendering in his/her own code or wants to know about the practical implementation of image synthesis techniques. Amazon does not show any details about the book here, so I shall explain the contents in the context of the table of contents:
5-0 out of 5 stars Six stars out of five
Although it is not possible here, I am fairly sure this book deserves such rating. This is truly remarkable work and is likely to become a classic text in the field of computer graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book
I just started learning how to render with markers, and this book comes in handy everyday!Great, but simple explanations on how to render different fabrics.Never confusing.A must for every beginning fashion illustrator!

2-0 out of 5 stars Childish illustrations
I bought this book because it had such good reviews, but I was very disappointed with the contents. The title is fashion rendering with color, but most of the illustrations are black and white (very misleading). Plus the illustrations don't look very professional in my opinion. If you have no drawing skills but want to become a fashion designer, then this is the right book for you. Otherwise, don't buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for starters
Bina Abling's Fashion Rendering with Color is a great source of information and consultation for starters on fashion design, and drawing in general.I've just started fashion design lessons, and I do not have many resources regarding this specific subject in my country, so I turned to Amazon.com to find the best, and I did.I've presented a collection of 30 dolls, using some of the styles on this wonderfull book, and I'm doing great, so I recommend this book to anyone who is starting, or just wants to know how to render with markers, and other materials.

There’s much more to rendering your final 3D image than hitting the "Render" button, especially in an application as deep as Maya. With options for everything from the color of shadows cast by lights to the size of the backplane on the virtual camera, tweaking the settings prior to final output can be daunting. In Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great cook book
This book is great if you want tutorials without clear explanation. It is more of an instruction manuel on how to reproduce a scene than teaching how create and think on your own. The problem with this approach is you finish a tutorial, pat yourself on the back for making something, but later realize that you did not fully understand what you did.If you are an expert in lighting with other programs, but need to transition over to Maya, then this is a greatbook for explaining how the tools work.If you are new to lighting or rendering this is not the best book for you, but it is okay for reference. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I must say I did enjoy this book. Anytime I read a book fromfront to back, I know I am getting good and interesting information. Rendering lights, materials, textures and cameras is one of the most crucial techniques that you can learn. It can pretty much make or break a piece of work. This book definitly prepares you. If you can get your hands on the Alias Rendering DVD then you really have a great combination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for learning more about Maya's new features!
I found this book to be very helpful in learning new techniques for rendering in Maya. With Maya's new rendering options such as the vector render and Mental Ray, it is easy to get lost in the maze of features.I am just learning Maya and I loved this book.I don't know that much and the book was easy to follow with scene files to help out along the way. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help
This book is a huge help to game developers. I found it a great read while writing my first game engine. It covers so much stuff it makes you want to try and add it all to your game! I am really happy with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Time Rendering & Games Technology
Volume II picks up where Volume I left off by concentrating on more current real time rendering and game engine topics.Where Volume I painted a broad sweeping overview of real time graphics topics, Vol. II extends this and ties in more closely with how many of those ideas affect the actual creation of games in a real 3d games engine called 'fly3d2' included on CD with the text (a more current and improved version of 'fly3dsdk' from Vol. I).All source code is included for the engine and can be kept current via the website through downloads as it is steadily updated. ... the complete source code for all engine modules and utilities requires purchase of the book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Reference for Mental Ray Standalone
The description of this book is not, as another reviewer mentioned, misleading. It doesn't mention 3ds Max, Maya, or Lightwave. The important thing to note here is that Mental Ray is first and foremost a standalone rendering package. The fact that today's major 3D applications import and make accessible a subset of it's functionality seems to be the cause of a lot of confusion. This is not a 3ds Max book, or a Maya book.If you're looking to find out what buttons to push or what steps to take to use certain features of Mental Ray in your favorite 3D package, this book is NOT for you. There's plenty of information floating around for free on the internet that can answer those questions.
2-0 out of 5 stars Rendering with mental ray not for non-programmers
The description of this book is totally misleading. It only discusses how to use mental ray through the running of scripts and programming language. It dicusses absolutely nothing as far as the manner in which mental ray is used in 3ds max.Does not explain mental ray through the use of traditional menus and the render dialogue box in 3ds max.No mention of what good settings are for GI values or lighting values. The entire book centers around entering information manually in script form rather than going through how mental ray works in 3ds max through the render dialogue box.The only reason this book gets 2 stars is that it does have a good glossary of terms.Of course, those terms can be retrieved from the standard 3ds max help menu.I am a very experienced 3ds max user and was simply looking to learn some more advanced features of mental ray, and I was extremely disappointed in the book, especially for $85. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Direct3D Book I've Seen Thus Far
I picked this book up about a year ago as it seemed to start from the beginning and cover much ground.Little did I know at the time that this would be the best book I'd find on the topic a year later. The coverage on shadow volumes and shadow maps is impressive. The discussion of things such as the depth buffer and stencil buffers is good.Plus having access to the various vertex and pixel shaders code made it easy to learn from just reviewing the code.4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This book helped me understand vertex shaders and pixel shaders, which was the point of the book. The only thing I did not like about the book was that some of the code had bad logic. But its very readable code and I must give the guy props, he must have coded this super fast. Plus his chapter on video was werid and hard to understand and the code was akward and to me was out of place in the book. It had way to much source code and no explaination of why it works. His other book on curves was good too ... check it out.

Plus his chapter on video was werid and hard to understand and the code was akward and to me was out of place in the book. It had way to much source code and no explaination of why it works. His other book on curves was good too ... check it out. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A BIG MESS!
Absolutely not worth the price it is being sold for. i agree with other reviewers that half of the information is totally not required.Plus the CD's are a mess as half of your time is wasted in searching the relative images in the CD for the excercises and some of them are completely missing!!! I could not render half of the fabrics as per the instructions since as they are very unspecific & confusing. So many pages have been wasted in giving a brief of textiles which is a different subject altogether and the one who would want to use this book has to be thorough with textiles. The information on textiles also is too brief & confusing.Aslo there were too many examples & mini biographies of people who are successful CAD/Textile designers which was totally not required.I hopped & jumped & skipped throughout the book expecting something useful but in vain.I finally gave up and returned it.Please do not waste money on this book.I really would like someone to come up with a more specific and useful book for using such important softwares like Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop specifically for rendering fashion as I desperately want to learn this. I expected that this book would be a good substitute (as this is the only book i hv found till now that uses photoshop to render textiles) for the highly expensive CAD courses here in NY. But unfortunately i was thouroughly disappointed. Can someone please suggest me any other good books related to Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop for rendering fashion, textiles & prints?????Suggestions are welcome - nins25@gmail.com

3-0 out of 5 stars a necessary evil
this is one of only two refrences currently avlaible on the subject. (a third is coming soon)
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic Instruction NOT Inspiration
This book should have been 1/2 the size and 1/2 the price.I nearly returned it, but since there are so few instructional books on Photoshop geared towards textile/surface design available on the market, I stuck it out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of the Renderman specs
The book covers everything from the basics of setting up a scene with lighting to writing your own shaders with detailed descriptions of the Renderman API.Overall, excellent overview for the intermediate graphics prefessional.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intended for shader programmers
Don't buy this book expecting to learn the intricacies of Renderman. This is really geared towards shader programmers and Renderman theorists. Don't get me wrong, it's a good book, it just wasn't what I was looking for.5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers more than the title suggests
The world of computer graphics books is filled with fat, pricy tomes that are frankly little better than rehashes of the manual. "Advanced Renderman" is a completely different sort of book.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much more than a basic guide, not well written
User manuals that come with software are notoriously bad, which is why most popular applications have third-party books written to teach users how to use them. It's rare to find such a book that's actually less helpful than the documentation, but I'm afraid this book is not much more than an overpriced reprint of the information found in the PDF documentation that comes with Shade, except that it's less clear. It's a pretty book, with lots of full color illustrations and screenshots, and has fairly broad coverage of Shade's features, but explanations are shallow and often confusing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good quick intro in a Shade tools
When I was a kid, I graduated from an art school, and later (but also long time ago) I had a deal with 3D in CAD/CAM systems. Now 3D is just my hobby.
