5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased
This was my first experience with a help-authoring tool and found this workbook guided me through the options very well. The conventions used throughout the book were easy to follow; repetition was built into the activities; the example projects supplied with the workbook were flawless (I did not find one error); Mr. Siegel's writing style is easy, I felt like I was in a casual conversation with him.I feel the level of depth covered was just right, it allowed me to dig in without getting overwhelmed and I feel I have a good foundation to build upon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
Very clear and direct. The spiral binding makes it very usable as a training manual (that is, you don't have to struggle to keep the book open).
5-0 out of 5 stars A Workbook That Works
This workbook really teaches you how to use RoboHelp HTML X5. It is a super learning tool. Before you spend lots of money on a class or lots of time searching a user's guide, buy this book. You can learn at your own pace, and you will be able to use RoboHTML X5 like a pro.--in no time. I really like how the workbook makes you look back on previous, learned lessons. It enhances learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Introduction to Flare
Clearly written, concise and to-the-point: a superb introduction Flare both conceptually (how it differs from RoboHelp) and tactically (how to use its features if you're used to RoboHelp). It exemplifies well written, no nonsense technical writing. One of the best aspects of this book is that it honestly compares the two help authoring systems and helps you weigh using one over the other. Excellent shortcut lists, a handy task index (and nice task orientation for the whole book), and a lovely, usable index. A must-have for any user considering Flare. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
Robohelp is advertised as "easy to use", but nothing that produces useful help tools can really be "easy." A good reference is needed, and this book provides it. The intro part focuses on Winhelp, and the last half of the book focuses on HTMLhelp. There are many examples and tips throughout the book and I found my confidence growing in using Robohelp by having this book nearby. Probably nothing works as well as experience, but this is a book I would recommend to new writers working with Robohelp 2000 or 2002.

3-0 out of 5 stars Robohelp 2000 Bible- A bit disappointing.
Most of it covers Winhelp, rather than HTMLHelp and WebHelp which is more at the leading edge and where the excitement is.5-0 out of 5 stars Robohelp 2000 Bible- Great Buy

3-0 out of 5 stars Makes this more complicated than it is....
I'm self-taught in a lot of different areas and have used a great many books of this type. The author needs to pare this down to the essentials before going into so many details. One problem is that she covers things like how to make DHTML effects before she covers something as essential as how to make a table of contents. She also tries to offer too much information in each page -- there are too many little "hint" boxes with information that you don't need to know yet.Larger graphics would be helpful, as I had trouble reading the text on many of them.

Looking through the TOC for this book, I was impressed at the extent towhich it covered the applications of RoboHelp. But, once I started usingthe book, I found myself spending progressively more time trying tounderstand what the author was saying. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Training Material
I had RoboHelp 2002 HTML installed on my workstation and left with an old manual from Robohelp Office. This book was a great self-training book that could be applied at my own pace.I found it very helpful for learning the basics of what I needed to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for the RoboHelp Certification exam
I purchased this book to familiarize myself with RoboHelp 2002 in preparation for the RoboHelp Certified Professional exam (I use version 9). I can't say enough about the quality and value of this book -- it's terrific! The text and exercises are very easy to understand, and really help build skills. I finished the book confident that I could make the most of the tools and features in RoboHelp 2002. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellently Written and Easy to Learn

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a Tutorial
This is an OK book for a intro level tutorial. From reading some of the other reviews here I bought it thinking it would be what I needed. If you want indepth information on using Robo Help this book is not it.All functions are not covered just basic ones are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners and old pros
John Hedtke and Brenda Huettner are knowledgeable professionals in the online Help field, and RoboHelp for the Web really showcases their knowledge. I'd recommend this book to any online Help developer. Newbies will benefit from the simple explanations and step-by-step procedures in the book. More experienced technical writers will find themselves learning quite a bit from latter chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book you need to get the job done
I've been a Technical Writer for over a dozen years, and have spent over a decade writing on-line help for various systens, and I can honestly say that this is the one book that you need to buy if you are going to use RoboHelp as your Help Authoring Tool (HAT) for the World Wide Web.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A well balanced effort
Having some experience in Windows Help but none in recent editions of RoboHELP I wanted a book that grounded the instruction in my help authoring experience. I wasn't disappointed. As a matter of fact I learned a fewthings I hadn't considered, such as tips on indexing your project. I likedthe division of the basic Getting Started and the more specific DiggingDown sections. It allowed me to get a quick overview and then pick what tofocus on for more detailed stuff. I also liked the index, which proveduseful in helping me to find specific areas later.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Instructions for RoboHelp Users
When our company purchased RoboHelp, I began a search for a very user friendly guide to teach me this product, as quickly and easily as possible.I decided to give RoboHelp 7.0 HTML Edition 2 Days by Kevin Siegel of IconLogic, a chance.I am very thankful I did!!The guide was easy to follow and I thoroughly enjoyed each session.Kevin has broken his material into sections which enable the user to gain confidence, and a sense of accomplishment, in a short period of time.Kevin Siegel's style is such that you honestly believe he is talking to you and his helpful tips and comments give insight that will definitely save you time and energy. As I went through the guide I was constantly calling my fellow workers into my office to show them what I had just learned about this giant product, RoboHelp, in just one day.As time has progressed, I have kept the guide handy for quick reference, and today purchased the book Kevin has written for version 9.0.I look forward to his guidance, drills and personal insight! Thanks for a great guide!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great help for a complete RoboHelp novice
I am an ex-programmer, and I worried that this text would be too simplistic for me -- but it wasn't. It has problems in the exercizes but they weren't hard to see and correct for -- the book needs a careful test. I like the way the tutorial weaves in information on help writing, e.g.discussing why there are different window types as it teaches you how tocreate them. The ratio between hands-on work and reading was good.I'mglad I bought this book rather than paying for a class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective & entertaining w/insider tips--just right for me.
You don't often find an effective training manual that is as entertaining as this one.Yes, it taught me how to create help files using RoboHelp with the usual point-and-click insructions, screen shots, and CD samplefiles, but what I really liked was feeling like the authors were giving meinsider tips from real-world experience-not just the typical "thisproduct is wonderful" stuff from the software company.I was afraid Iwas the only one who who felt stymied over certain issues, but theyactually had the nerve to point out a few things that aren't wonderfulabout RoboHelp and how to deal with them (e.g., you don't need the gaggleof Robohelp toolbars that crowd your screen, & you really CAN edit theproject file, despite what RoboHelp says ).It effectively got me up andrunning in a short time.I am an experienced computer user, but was new toRoboHelp 7-a behemoth of a program that seemed a bit overwhelming beforegoing through the book. The book was well-organized and clear.I likedthe discussions about design andthe "big picture" explanationsthat satisfied my need to know WHY (not just how and what). It has anexcellent index that will keep me using it as a reference until I think Ican fly on my own.It was just right for my needs!

2-0 out of 5 stars Some Good Info... But Hard To Follow
I have mixed feelings about this book. It has some good information, but a lot of it is technical mumbo jumbo that, frankly, I couldn't care less about. What I really needed was to create a help project quickly. I can'tsay that this book helped me all that much. I'd say that the user manualthat came with my software (for free) did more for me than this book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent jump-start to learning RoboHelp 9
I recently had RoboHelp dropped into my lap and was told to create a help file for a user manual. I had never seen or used it before and only had the Getting Started book to go on. After doing the tutorials that came with the application, I was still pretty confused as to how it all worked. I just received this book yesterday and already I've learned so much! I think it is a great way to really get a handle on how RoboHelp works and all the things you can do with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool!
This book was the perfect step-by-step guide for those who want a quick and easy learning guide for RoboHelp, myself included. It was easy to follow and very comprehensive. I thought the lessons in MS Word were very helpful since I use a page layout program on a daily basis. The confidence checks ensured that I had a firm grasp of the concepts and steps required to complete tasks before moving to the next section.5-0 out of 5 stars The next best thing to a live training session
While this book is probably not suited to the needs of an experienced RoboHELP user, it is an excellent book for someone who needs to learn the basic functionality of RoboHelp 9 Classic quickly. I changed jobs and needed to use RoboHELP Classic to maintain Winhelp documentation, a task with which I had no experience. Because there is a dearth of training classes on RoboHELP 9, I turned to this book. I am very glad I did! Combined with the included CD, this book takes you on a working tour of the application, allowing you to work hands on with a small project to give you a working familiarity with all of the features needed to work with a new or existing help project. Moreover, the CD supplies all of the source files--text, graphics, etc.--needed to work the examples. You're not distracted creating source files for the exercises; all you need is included on the CD.Read more

Bill Meisheid is one of those Renaissance men who is never just a *little* involved in what he's doing.Although he is primarily a RoboHELP trainer and not an indexer, he has delved deeply into not only the general principles of indexing but the specifics of indexing with RoboHELP. His workshops at the annual conference of the American Society of Indexers play to standing room only and he is well known as an informative and energetic presenter.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Potentially good training guide-misleading syntax
As a writer who develops instructional materials, I am always interested in well-written training guides. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - Unusually Helpful
I went out of my way to enter this review, because as I used this book to learn RoboHTML 2000, I often shook my head and thought: this is so well done that I've got to get back to say: Good job!The information is very well organized and laid out.All the steps were well thought out(some typos, but they didn't get in the way).A lot of books, like those24-hour ones, advertise themselves as teaching you an application, but thisbook really, truly taught me the application.I'm a tech writer with 12years experience, and I've got to say that a truly effective book is awonderful and not common thing. This book exposed me to all the parts ofRoboHTML 2000, and made me go through some steps to learn just enough ofthe various parts so that I'll be able to go back and put the skills touse.NOTE: This book was obviously not written quickly, but is the productof users really learning how to do the tasks. You can tell because theinstructions "think of everything."Really, I wasn't lefthanging in confusion once.Good job!

I just finished going through this book and must say that I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I learned and how quickly I learned it.Read more

The book was easy to follow.I had never used RoboHelp HTML before, and I can now use it with confidence because of this book. Our FTP productwas released on time. Excellentbook!

There are no other books on this topic out there. This one is pretty good. I was able to follow all of the steps. As a veteran Web Master I was surprised at the level of HTML coding covered in the book. The exercisesmade quick work of difficult topics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Non-technical but a good novice primer
I was able to follow everything. Since this is the only HTML Help book out there, I have to give it a thumbs up. My assessment of various items in the book:+frames [very good example] +forms [ok, but no info about serverside] +HTML Help basics [solid] -sounds and graphics [annoying] -cover[very flimsy paper] -final exercise [none] -fonts [very poor and hard toread/follow] -bookmarks [none] -scripting [none] ...
