3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but low level
I am a Firmware Engineer currently but have a degree in Electrical Engineering so I felt this book would help me relate my Electrical experience to the Firmware world. I was disappointed when I realized how basic this book was. They dedicate a full chapter to basic voltage, resister, capacitor, etc concepts. Even with no on the job experience outside of school I found almost nothing that I did not already know. It is good for people who need to learn the basics but if you have any computer architecture experience or electrical engineering experience then this book is not for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on hardware common to embedded systems
This is a practical introduction to embedded hardware, so to write software for the hardware presented in this book, you will need to consult other books. This book is only an introduction and if you want to gain more knowledge and experience in the field of hardware design, further study is required. In the first part of the book the author gives an introduction to computer architecture and describes the components that you find in a PC. The author goes on to explain basic electronics, just enough to understand the explanations about the electronic components. There are the basic equations to calculate voltage and current. The functionality of resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes and crystals is explained. There is advice on how you can build or have built your own integrated circuit board. Some simple microprocessors and micro controllers are described including the currently available and commonly used PIC and AVR micro controllers, the 68000-series microprocessor and a DSP based controller. The functionality of the components is described and it is shown how the component can be used with a few other basic components to exercise a minimum of functionality. The book also covers useful topics like the protocols SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) and I2C, Inter Integrated Circuit, which show how components can communicate with each other or the outside world. Various serial port and network protocols are discussed like RS232C and USB. Chapter 13 was particularly interesting, covering analog to digital conversion and applications. For example, the book explains how to use an amplifier to connect a digital circuit to a temperature or light sensor, or a motor control. The one thing I did not like about the book was the dedication of an entire chapter to the ancient language of Forth. This space might have been better spent on expanding the book's discussion of assembly language or the more timely topic of embedded networks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Application Developer
This is a great beginners book from basic electronics up to developing for specific chips.I've been an application developer for years and I've been looking to make the switch to lower level programming. This book will definitely get you started and even walk you through the design of the beginners microprocessors (PIC & AVR).

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction in causal Modeling
The book by Korb and Nicholson is very readable and structured. Starting with some background information in statistics it comes directly to the major topic of the book - bayesian networks. The theory thereof is nicely evolved and applied to small examples to demonstrate its usage. Each chapter finishes with a short summary and bibliographical notes for further readings.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Text
It is difficult to assess a review without understanding the biases of the reviewer.I fall under the category of researcher/practitioner when it comes to reasoning with graphical models.I am familiar with and make use of several books and papers on this topic in my work.Of the set of standard references (Pearl, Jensen, Neapolitan, Jordan, Cowell et al., Borgelt & Kruse) the text by Korb and Nicholson (K&N) stands out in terms of its clarity and accessibility.Does the book have everything one would ever want to know about Bayesian inference? Not by a long shot.Is it, however, a good place to start?Definitely. The basic concepts are presented relatively completely and with clarity.I consistently recommend K&N over other alternatives to colleagues new to the field. Is there a chasm separating concept and algorithm in the book?I don't think there is, especially relative to other references. With tools such as Kevin Murphy's BNT, or Netica available on the Web, it seems to me that providing a solid conceptual framework becomes paramount for a textbook such as this.I believe K&N succeed admirably in this sense. Why four stars and not five?Even for an introductory text such as K&N, it would be nice to have more development of some concepts such as causality, context specific independence, or loss of independence in dynamic nets.Although it won't be your last book on reasoning with graphical models, K&N should probably be your first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Windows GDI
This the most extensive, best explained Windows GDI book ever read by me! I hereby highly recommend this book to everyone who is doing GDI intensive work.1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, Poorly Written
After spending several weeks going over the contents of this book, I do not recommend it to the beginning or intermediate readers.Feng Yuan insight into the Visual C++ environment is excellent; however, he does a very poor job with organizing and explaining the topic to the average reader.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile venture
Weiner was something of a revolutionary in his time. He (among others) pushed the revolution in computing out of the slipstick era. He, at the height of the Cold War, wrote for audiences in both the USSR and the USA. Small wonder that he took on religion. I mean that he took it on as a duty and companion, not as an opponent, though many might have seen opposition.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good retrospective of the history of computing
Written in 1964 when the concept of a human interacting dynamically with a machine was first becoming a reality, there are facets of this book that are dated. Nevertheless, the concepts that are described are still as pertinent today as they were when Wiener first set down his thoughts. The book is a collection of essays where Wiener explains his ideas for what he thinks the future holds for humans interacting with machines.4-0 out of 5 stars Technological Ethics

5-0 out of 5 stars OPM is an Excellent Methodology
I have used many methodologies over my career. Most of them are based around the object-oriented and structured design paradigms. I found out about OPM quite by accident about a year ago. I've been using it ever since. I have used it to model both hardware and software systems, as well as for business process modeling. It is an excellent methodology and I recommend it for anyone developing any kind of system.
5-0 out of 5 stars The way modeling ought to work
OPM is a methodology for modeling systems, technical as well as any other system. In the techical world it compares with UML. OPM is designed with consistant and simple notations, uses simple rules that when combined can be used to model any system (real or informational) to any level of complexity that is desired by the system architect. Also, it integrates object modeling and process modeling in one diagram (although you can still keep them separate if you wanted). 5-0 out of 5 stars Object-Process Methodology (OPM)
This book describes how Object-Process Methodology (OPM) CASE can be used as a tool for generating complete system intent specifications by graphical object diagrams, precise semantic and syntactic language, and intuitive symbols, definitions and structures. As systems have become more complex, a prevalent problem in systems development has been the number of accruing errors. These errors can cause catastrophic failure in the worst-case in addition to intolerable schedule delays and cost overruns. Introducing errors as well as difficulty finding and successfully correcting them occurs because of the lack of proper analysis and design tools for complex system specifications. OPM has the attributes to mitigate against the possibility of system failure, providing comprehensive visibility for better schedule and cost control in product development. It enhances reuse of system modules, processes and software routines in different contexts, while reducing the chance of errors. OPM automatically generates intent specifications that are readily understood by both customers and product team members and are translatable to machine control subsystems. OPM is a holistic systems paradigm that extends the Object-Oriented (OO) paradigm and overcomes its major shortcomings by integrating system structure and behavior in a single integrated graphic and natural language model. OPM successfully tackles the task of development and lifecycle management of systems, products and projects. OPM is a significant extension of and a major departure from the OO approach. It incorporates the system static-structural and dynamic-procedural aspects into a single, unified model. Presented as a concise visual formalism by a set of Object-Process Diagrams (OPD set), it is automatically translated into a set of Object-Process Language (OPL) script, a subset of natural English. At the basis of the OPM philosophy is the observation that to faithfully and naturally analyze and design systems in any domain, processes, like objects, should be considered as stand-alone "things" (entities) that are not necessarily encapsulated within objects. This detachment and de-coupling of processes from objects emphasizes the duality and complementarity of objects and processes, and opens the door for structure-behavior unification. At any point in time, objects exist with some structure and state. This is the static aspect of the system. Processes affect objects by changing their states. This is the dynamic aspect of the system. System complexity is managed through a number of graphical scaling options: zooming into and out of processes, unfolding and folding objects, and expressing or suppressing object states. These mechanisms provide for selectively detailing a subset of things while still maintaining the high-level context of the details.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars lacks technical content
Like two other reviewers, I also found a lack of substantive technical content. The book does delve into great detail about the ATAM process, down to listing the various roles like timekeeper and questioner, and their responsibilities. Fair enough. And for this, there is indeed plenty of content for setting up and running the process.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great on meeting details, but short on substantive examples
This book does a great job of diving into specific details on how to run meetings and the checklists of steps to follow for three different architecture review models that go into different depth (ATAM, SAAM, and ARID). I really liked the breadth of issues that the reviews covered as well as the concrete guidelines on how deep to go with the reviews.
4-0 out of 5 stars Depends on what you want.
What this book does, it does very well. It presents three techniques for reviewing the suitability of a software architecture. The presentation style is clear, complete, and reasonably frank about the problems an architecture evaluator is likely to encounter.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have for people doing research in theoretical crypto
This is a sequel of Foundations of Cryptography, Vol 1, which covers theoretical proofs of signatures, encryptions, and more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental book for anyone working with cryptography
This book, that you can see some parts on the authors site, is a essencial on everyone desk working on security and cryptography. Itis not a book of recipes of how to build a secure cryptographic environment but a fundamental book on the basics of cryptography and cryptographic protocols.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great idea -- needs a good editor!
This book hits some extremes in good and bad.The good is easy:There are few (no?) other books that fill the niche of theoretical cryptography. There are some excellent lecture notes from Bellare and Goldwasser that are available on the web, but they don't go into the detailed motivation of topics that Goldreich does. The topics that Goldreich has chosen cover a lot of important areas, and he has done a great job of pulling out the best, most essential results to present.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for beginner and intermediate
It is meant for digital CMOS circuit designers. Not meant for digital circuits level. All are at CMOS transistor level analysis and design. Usually, most of the digital CMOS circuits in the industry have already been laid out and kept as part of the standard cell library. Even though so, we still need to have a strong concept on digital CMOS circuits in order to be a good IC designer. 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book with great details and coverage

4-0 out of 5 stars More on the relationship between security issues and HA
as I was reading this otherwise excellent book, I noticed that there was a very important theme (to my understanding), which wasn't honored enough attention; namely, issues relating to the `Secure Socket Layer' protocol and availability, which directly translates to money coming your or someone else's way.5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first edition!
I bought the first edition of this book, and it became so dog-eared from everyone borrowing it that I was about to order another, when I saw there was a secodn edition. This one is even better that the first. If you need action items and you need set-up help for providing the kind of network your boss wants and needs, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on system/data availability
Very good coverage of HA issues. Many people get a warm fuzzy having one piece of kit that is "reliable" or "redundant".To get substantial gains in availability requires a more complete systems view. This book reviews many aspects, and paths that can be taken towards increasing availability.I heartily recommended this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Since this book I am a unit test enthusiast
Before reading this book I seldom wrote unit tests and when I just did it to make the project manager happy. I didn't really grasp what unit test is all about. I suppose many programmers in the industry know that unit testing is important. But they don't write any unit tests as it is boring and the next deadline is very close any way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for JUnit - intro to intermediate topics
This book is a great intro to JUnit and quickly advances to intermediate level stuff (Cactus etc.). Lots of best practices are littered throughout the book and there's a good balance of code and discussion. A combination of this book with "Junit Recipes" by Rainsberger and "Java Development with Ant" by Hatcher will take you from newbie to JUnit guru in no time. Written in 2004 it's begun to get a little dated with JUnit 4.0 released (using annotations is quite a change) - however I'm sticking with JUnit 3.8 which this book is great for.

5-0 out of 5 stars An ACTION packed thriller with JUnit. Must Read

As a desktop applications programmer this was a good introduction to the embedded world for me. Whenever I try to learn some new technology, there always tends to be a knowledge gap that needs bridged. Once it has been, I am able to start using whatever that technology is. I feel this book is my bridge for learning to write code for embedded systems.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Keil's C51 Compiler
This is a good introduction to Keil's C51 compiler. I have 1 year experience writing PIC code using CCS C compiler. My latest project is to develope 8051 microcontroller firmware using Keil's C Compiler. The documentation provided by Keil is limited and confusing, not a good one to beginner. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book for embedded programming in C.
I believe the real title of this book is more like "Introduction to embedded systems programming and software design with 8051 using C". Most of the C and C++ programmers will not find anything more about the C language they do not already know. The author claims that the target audience is desktop developers with C++ and Java programming. Probably this involves a portion of this programming crowd, who have not done any low level programming and are relying on existing libraries or have very little experience. One obvious advantage of the book is its clear style. The touch of many important topics and well selected examples from very small to a decent size projects is another plus. Selecting a well known microcontroller flavor (Intel 8051) is a plus, for the specific points that could be illustrated when one has to use such a cheap and not very powerful device for a project. The choice to demonstrate the examples with the Keil development environment makes it very convenient for the reader to follow the text. For the experienced embedded programmer most topics are pretty well known and they may find the style very easy and not so rich in new information. For example interrupts are not discussed until chapter 7 and the book has 4 more chapters. The users of bigger microcontrollers ,16 and 32 bit, may find that the code does not cover some of the more complex issues they have to face in their software designs. I am mostly refering to the developers creating code for Motorola 32 bit and the ARM family. Looking forward for the forthcoming book "Embedded Operating Systems" from the same author due for publication Jan, 2004. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my most-used reference books!
I have been a UNIX professional now for more years than I would care to think about. I find this book a personal library "must have".. It's style is open, and easy to understand from the beginner to the seasoned professional (who can at times forget what the "date" options are or which cron columns are which! :)
5-0 out of 5 stars Unix in Plain English
This book is well written, well configured and is the course material I use to teach Unix. This book is a must have for the new to nearly new sysadmin type person. I actually wore mine out. Thanks for writing such aclear and concise book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
If you are new to Unix then this is a great book to get you started.Itclearly tells how to get around the Unix environment and is a greatreference book.I would be surprised if a new user could not findeverything he/she needs in this book. The inclusion of switches for eachcommand was extremely helpful as was the DOS to Unix cross reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great topics
After reading this book, I think it is going to be the mandatory companion I hand out to new Linux administrators, along with Essential System Administration. The first 6 chapters are exceptional.I can't say enough good things about them. The coverage of PAM is better than anything I have seen. The coverage of authentication, groups, users and best practices surrounding them was very good as well. The logging chapter alone is probably worth the purchase of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Couldn't ask for more.
I haven't run a Linux box since 2002. Some time ago, realizing that I'd soon have a chance to migrate to using Linux for everyday work, I decided I should start refreshing my *NIX commands and shell scripting. Then, I saw "Hardening Linux". Rather spontaneously, I decided to start with this security-focused title instead of the perhaps more intuitive path of installing the latest distro, setting up a bunch of daemons, installing databases, etc. That proved to be an excellent decision. "Hardening Linux" is not a small book. Yet, I read the 500 pages more or less cover to cover. Even though we're talking about a book of which purpose is to help you to secure your Linux server, I felt like I learned more about Linux reading this book than I've learned during the last year at work.
4-0 out of 5 stars In-depth explanations with step-by-step techniques for securing Linux and common applications.
