4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on software testing, but interesting also for other test engineers
Recommended book for software test engineers. Since the author also discusses political aspects of testing in today's real business world, where the CFO rather than the CEO rules, this is an interesting book for other test engineers, too.
3-0 out of 5 stars Meat ratio is too low
I am a graduate of Computer Science and found a job in software testing. I bought this book based on the Recommendations on Amazon. However, after reading a few chapters, I am disappointed:
4-0 out of 5 stars Risk based software testing
This text describesMITs (Most Important Tests),a risk based test methodology.MITs makes use of prioritized test cases, which collectively are referred to as a test inventory. The book is organized in 3 sections.Chapters 1 through 5 focus on background concepts.Chapters 6 through 8 focus on the test inventory and how to create it.Chapters 9 through 14 discuss risk analysis, test techniques , and test planning and estimation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Isaac J Sledge
This book is very useful for learning, and teaching yourself, ER diagrams, from simple to complex. The book begins with the concepts of normalization for databases and works toward developing simple ER diagrams, mapping cardinality and participation, specialization and generalization, and finally reverse engineering; all of which are explained well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is totally a best buy. It is simple enough for newbies as it explainly the concepts rather clear. It helps in designing a good database. Great book, two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to techniques and concepts
This book fits between Raj Jain's seminal "The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis" (ISBN 0471503363) and the more pragmatic series of books written by Menasce and Almeida.Where it differs from Jain's book is the more modern examples, using networking, database systems and overall architectures (Jain's book was more slanted towards host-based systems prevalent when that book was written).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good as a refresher for the initiated, but not for beginners at all
This new explanation of phylogenetic methods contains a good discussion of the merits and potential failings of many of the methods currently used to study phylogenetics. It may be very good for computer science students, who have a better grasp of the mathematics. It may also be good for biologists well versed in biostatistics, who want to know why systematists use certain, less easily handled, analytical methods. However, it is very difficult reading for other scientists who do not fully understand the complex math presented in the text. It also does not give a concinct summary of the assumptions and failings of each method. The bottom line is that this book is good for experts who easily understand algorithms, but not good for students who don't have a good handle on such things.

5-0 out of 5 stars very complete reference book
Inferring phylogenies was much anticipated by the large audience which has used Felsenstein's programs, and his website which reviews and categorizes applied tree building and population genetics programs.
2-0 out of 5 stars not well written
This book, although apparently containing everything, is written in a very opaque style which makes it impossible to simply read through. It probably is a good reference to look in for particular topics, but it is not at all usable as an introduction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for newcomers to embedded systems
The book walks you through all the steps of embedded systems development before going into the details of RTOS, which is the main focus of the book. It is a great book for the intended readers of the book, as stated up front in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good VxWorks-centric Intro to Real Time OS
This book is a good introduction to readers who are beginners in the world of embedded programming and real-time operating systems. A real-time OS facilitates the creation of real-time systems, but does not guarantee that they are real-time. Nor does an RTOS necessarily have high throughput. Instead, they enable, through specialized scheduling algorithms and deterministic behavior, the guarantee that system deadlines can be met. Thus a real-time OS is valued more for how quickly it can respond to an event than for the total amount of work it can do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but dry
Schneider and Winters present a clear, thorough introduction to "use cases," a well-established part of software requirements management. In logical structure, though not always in time order, use cases take the first step towards detailed technical requirements and design. They answer the question, just what is this thing supposed to do? The answer has narrative form, describing the sequence of events that pass between the system's internals and the outside world. It's well worth noting that a use case is written in informal, non-technical language, the kind that an end user can really understand and comment on. Anyone who's ever worked on something for a year only to hear "That's not what I wanted" will understand just how crucial early feedback can be.
5-0 out of 5 stars UCP Explanation worth the price of admission
I have been a technology developer/manager for 20 years. In most organizations, there is little understanding of the value of structured requirements (there may be an acceptance philosophically, but in practice it done in pockets at best). This book not only helps communicate that value, it provides an excellent explanation of the Use Case Points estimation method.Managers who get their business partners to adhere to these practices and get their project managers to estimate in this fashion will begin to achieve far more predictable results.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why we use it for a graduate class
The one major strength of this book, from a computer science viewpoint, is its emphasis on "attack patterns".This systemization of these issues really differentiates this book from many of its competitors (which tend to be either the latest 500 hacks or descriptions of standards).Put simply CS is the study of algorithms, and this book fits nicely into that tradition.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I am a relative novice to programming and exploitation however this book was truly a mind exciting experience. I found all of it's content to be useful, although I would say that this text is definately for an advanced user or someone quite motivated to understand the ideas presented as it delves into quite a bit of detail demanding advanced knowledge of several languages. Although there is a lot of info in this book, I would say that if you do not already know how to exploit a system in a basic form, you will be lost immediately as a step by step proceedure is not given but assumed to be known. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, highly recommended!
This book is fantastic- one of a kind, by far :)
3-0 out of 5 stars fair intro to disassembly
I give the author credit for a decent intro to disassembly, but it's a difficult path with this book. Expensive tools are assumed to be available (no reference is made to free alternatives), and less than subtle remarks about using these tools to make commercial software "free".

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to SystemVerilog for the experienced
As an experienced hardware designer who wants to know what SV is all about, this book was great. It introduced the langauge in a natural way, explained what is synthesisable and is more readable than the LRM. You can also download the book examples from the author's website. This is the audience that this book aimed at and it hits the mark, especially as most designers can get the company to pay the high price of the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
First, this book is copyright 1997, and six years is a heck of a long time in this industry.Second, the book makes almost no reference to vehicle applications, which are a very important CAN applications and in fact where CAN started. For example there is no mention of SAE J1939 heavy truck bus standard, which is CAN based, and J1850 appears only once.

4-0 out of 5 stars the glories of the command line
The glories of the command line. SQLPlus [I am not going to write that irritating asterix] is an acknowledgment of the reality that for many large computer programs and operating systems, a command line utility is vital. The book explains this for the specific instance of hooking to Oracle's database. It is meant as a definitive reference. Showing every command, often accompanied by example code.

I have found this book to be a really great guide that is easy to follow. The author provides a gentle, but thorough introduction to topics like creating reports, writing scripts, customization etc.He offers methodologies and alternatives beyond the syntax that you can find in the manual. For example, he presents and evaluates six ways one can achieve some kind of if-then-else flow control in SQL*Plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive guide to Windows debugging
I have bought all of John's books. He is the guy Microsoft calls when they can't solve a problem. On top of that he has a great writing style, is easy to understand, and has some great war stories. His books are always the top of my recommended reading list.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful discussion of Windows debugging practices
This book brings a vast amount of Windows-specific debugging information together in one place and has been very helpful to me. Some of this info could be found elsewhere, but only by sorting through dozens of documentation pages and magazine articles, some many years old, and additionally the author adds value by giving very explicit instructions (even providing source code) on how to do things that are often only hinted at in the Microsoft documentation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good sequel, hope to see the next one too
I'm writing this to thank that guy who posted the table of contents in an effort to show how this book is the same as John Robbins' prior - since that is what convinced me to buy it :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Both theory and practice plus free modeling software
The coverage of the theory in the first part of the book is very well done. However, its the practical examples in the second half where the book really shines. There are a number of examples modeling client server and web applications. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool for the capacity planner or performance analyst
This book lays out basics of queuing theory in a way that is both understandable and easy to apply.I have fumbled for years using complex performance analysis tools without ever really knowing whether or not I'm getting the right answer. Now I know what looks right and what doesn't. Gunther has an easy to follow style as he introduces the concepts of queuing theory. Then he shows you how to apply what you have learned using real life examples. It's a definite "must have" for the capacity planner or system performance analyst.

5-0 out of 5 stars concise and lucid exposition on performance analysis
dr. gunther has written a gem of a performance analysis book. for starter, the unix load average is a wonderful detective story. i especially liked chapter 5 with real performance analysis experiences applying queueing theory discussed in both chapter 2 and 3. the best part is dr. gunther's exposition of queueing theory into the essence for the working performance analysts. in addition, appendix B on buffers and appendix C on memoryless property are the most lucid explanation i have read. i would also heartily recommend dr. gunther's other book, the practical performance analyst. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for Real-Time system designers/programmers
This book is a rare commodity in the area of Real-Time systems. While there are several books on programming in general and object oriented methods in specific for real-time and embedded developers, few approach the subject from timing prodictability point of view. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Text for System Identification
This book is very through in presenting methods of system identification...mathematically.However as with most good mathematical oriented books there are not a lot of practical design type problems. One other mark aginst the book is that similar notation is used for different topics, which can sometimes be a bit confusing. One thing I might recommend, to a potential buyer is that you take a course in random process, and possess a through understanding of signals and transforms. All in all though if a little more meat in terms of practicality were added I'd rate this book a five.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
An excellent textbook for engineers, and a necessary reference for Matlab toolbox (System Identification). ... Read more
