1-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly boring to read
I tried to read this book.I have it on my book shelf and I can see it right now, but I really couldn't get past the introduction. For a supposedly technical book, the first chapter reads like a 1995 introduction to the 'information superhighway' and about how wonderful it will be.This sentence on page 9:
5-0 out of 5 stars More Meat thanI can EAT
This is one of those books where in you need a month to complete each chapter .
4-0 out of 5 stars Finally an IT book with Meat!
If you are like me and you are frustrated after picking up an IT book and only getting superficial platitudes rather than keen insights, then you may be pleasantly surprised by this book because it really reveals, as the title states, the "Power of Events."The book starts off establishing the author's grounding in Enterprise Architectures (and their shortcomings), and then proceeds to build an intuitive foundation to seduce the reader into the world of events that they may not have realized was so much a part of distributed systems. While the formal notation used in the book may appear daunting, it is easily mastered and the subtle rules and mechanism are exposed through many thoughtful examples.I will say the second half of the book is a slower read than the 1st part, but the book should leave you with some confidence that there really are some breakthroughs in software technology that will have a positive impact on distributed IT System quality and the complex event processing shows that potential. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a Good Reference for Data Schema
I have NOT read this book. I give it 4 stars since I admire the courage of the authors to let you review their data schemas. Reading the modeling done by others is still one of the best approach to learn data modeling. However, most of us can not share our design with you since they are valuable corporate assets.
3-0 out of 5 stars good for a start, but...
This is a good book to get the juices flowing if you are unsure of how to model certain business processes, but some of the models in the book are poor examples of database design. Some of the data warehouse models, in particular, are alarmingly bad, and don't follow some proven best practices. 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice reference to start ER-modeling
Whether you are a beginner or have some experience in data modeling, this book can save you much time. It is absolutely practical and full of samples that you can use almost right away. I like the way the authors model people and organisations. The only thing that is missing here is demography/firmography which usually is paid great attention in data warehousing. I did not like the fact that the chapters on dimensional modeling only give an idea that there are modeling techniques other than ER-modeling. To learn them better I recommend one of those Kimball's books on dimensional modeling. So, this and other minor flaws gives the book four stars instead of five. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superseded by a better second edition
When industry leaders such as Cem Kaner and Bret Pettichord extol the virtues of this book you can be assured that it is great - everything they and other reviewers have said is on target. Moreover, you'd be hard-pressed to walk into the testing area in any company and not see a copy of this book on someone's desk.4-0 out of 5 stars Organized and professional
This book is about web testingin general, not just performance testing, and isa must have for the professional testing engineer.Chapters 7 and 8, on performance and scalability give a very good introduction to the subject, and include a great sample performance testingplan.5-0 out of 5 stars Superb introduction to the complexities of web testing
I have been in web testing for 3.5 years and this was the first book I found on the subject. My only complaint is that it took so long to come out, but I won't hold that against Nguyen or Wiley. It is a superb introduction to the complexities of web testing, which despite the protests of standalone application testers, is much more difficult and technical than traditional application testing. Not only does the tester need to know the basics of application testing, he or she has to know about the complex technology behind the site or application, and Nguyen's book is unbeatable.I've recommended that everyone on my team read it, since they are all new to the art of web testing.I read it cover to cover and it didn't really cover anything I had not learned in 3.5 years of experience, but had it been published when I started, I would have been able to ramp up so much faster.I also recommend that application developers read it in order to understand the role of a tester and to develop professional respect for a much-maligned profession. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A monumental work, but beware!
Andre LaMothe is an amazing guy, no question about it. He tends to write huge books, and the amount of material he fits into them is superlative. He's obviously got a passion for what he does, and that passion is certainly revealed in his writing style. He's a guy who never lost that simple love of video games.
5-0 out of 5 stars Always a step ahead...
I am always amazed how one person can know so much, learn new things and write <<2 000>> page book--and still produce accurate information that any hobbiest can pickup, without burning out! I wonder if Lamothe's next book is going to top his last? This one, just like Tricks 3D, is not for the faintheart but for the passionate individual that wants to learn how things are done in this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars seminal
The world is filled with books (and numerous other products) that claim they will change the way you view the world. This is one of a small number of items that give the reader something very new to think about and change your methods of reasoning.A very good collection of essays, which are the seeds of systems theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is a must read , because we can learn from the past.
This book is for people interested in interdisciplinary research from a theoretical point of view. It is like a time machine to allow a look through the eyes of Bertalanffy to the 1960's and the prevailing scientific views at that time.Above all, this is due to the 'special' style the book is writen. With 'special' I mean, that Bertalanffy does not write completely factual and impersonal but more emotional.
3-0 out of 5 stars A book for the development of system ideas.
This book is quite old now and shows some of its age. At the time the idea of system theory was new and invigorating although it still appears that the theory was not radically new by any means even then. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to OOP
I've read a number of introductions to object-oriented design and programming. This one is the best all-around introduction that I have seen. It starts in the real world, with a discussion of how one plans and organizes a task (sending flowers to a significant other) that requires more than a single person to get done. That's a pleasant change from texts that begin with Dauntingly Dry Definitions ("encapsulation", "inheritance", and my favorite, "polymorphism"). 5-0 out of 5 stars Sets the proper foundation
I've been using classes more as a means of organizing and improving the maintainability, understanding of various applications I've built over the past 3 years (VB). As I am about to develop solutions using the .NET platform (C#, VB.NET), I thought it would do me good to formalize my understanding of OOP/OOD. After reading this text (3rd Edition), I not only formalized my understanding, but was able to see OOP as clearly as I could structured programming (Code Complete). In my opinion, all should use this as the first book before trying to participate/apply J2EE or Microsoft.NET as it will allow you "properly" communicate, design and code systems from abstraction to detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great as a first book on object-oriented programming
I really enjoyed this book. The author covers all the important oo concepts in several languages. This allows you to get an excellent perspective on each concept without being distracted by each language's implemention of that concept. I also appreciated the writing skills of the author. He was always clear and precise. A lot of information is packed into a relatively slim volume. Of several introductory oo books I've recently read, this one easily tops my list. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little outdated...but still a great book
Anyone who is interested in computer architecture or computer performance benchmarking should have a copy of this book. It is well organized, packed full of information, and has many challenging exercises at the end of each chapter that reinforce and extend the concepts outlined. Also, the inside jacket gives a list of useful formula for quick reference. For those interested in vector processors, the authors have included an overview of these in the appendix. Do to new hardware and updated versions of operating systems, the book is of course somewhat out-of-date since it first appeared. It takes a long time to get through the book, but the time spent is well worth it. My interest in the book was mostly in performance aspects of computer architecture, and how to relate the material in the book to the SPEC benchmarking studies. For this reason, and for lack of space, my comments will briefly summarize the parts of the book that I found exceptionally well-written in this area. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If you don't manage requirements then you don't control them...
If you think that requirements are not all that necessary, this book might change your view: Before you build something, you should decide what you want to build. If you think you cannot start development until requirements are "complete," Davis will convince you that, since requirements change, requirements management is an ongoing activity. He breaks it down into three major areas:
5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading to make requirements triage (prioritization) really work
Al Davis has done it again, with a highly practical and useable book on the ongoing process of effectively managing changing requirements.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book!
One of the best books I have read in this subject. Detailed and with many practical rules and examples.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very litte content
My school uses this book to teach random signals, and I feel that the content is quite lacking. The theory presented is too basic, and the authors don't provide any further explantions. The examples presented are too simple and too few. Additionally, they don't show how harder problems can be solved. The end-of-chapter problems aren't very easy to solve if you're only consulting this book. There are exercises presented for you to try during the chapter in addition to the end-of-chapter problems, but the book doesn't show how to do these problems and only gives you the final answers instead. On top of this, sometimes, the answers for the exercises are switched, leaving you wondering for a few minutes what you might have done wrong.5-0 out of 5 stars this is Amazing BOOK!!
I read this book several times and I can say that it is the best statistical&probability book for engineers or for computer scientist. My major is Image Processing (DSP, DIP, DVP) and reading this book helps me to increase my professional knowlege and rise my skills. I sincerelly recommend this book for any non-math major person. Now this book becomes desktop book for me like "Numercal Recipes in C" for any algorithm developer.

3-0 out of 5 stars View from a student subjected to this book
While probably not the worst book I've had to learn from, it seems like the people who wrote this book subscribe to the same philosophy of teaching that my professor uses, which is namely to keep closely to theory and not use too many examples. At least not any fully worked out examples, and hardly any with actual numbers. As a result, it's difficult to learn and easy to get lost. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Beginners, Useful Reference for Test Bench Development
This book is an excellent book for beginners to VHDL.It is written in such a way that it presents the development and nuances of the VHDL language sequentially and ties some of the history of the language into the examples. It is very useful when you want to know why the syntax works the way it does. My only criticism is that it can be difficult to find examples when using it as a desk reference.I often found myself thinking, "I remember reading how to do this, but I can't seem to find it now." I would highly recommend this book if you can dedicate the time to read it cover-to-cover as it makes things easier to find when you need them.

4-0 out of 5 stars To the point!
Hardening Apache by Tony Mobily is a book for server administrators who want to learn how to secure the Apache web server. On 260 pages, in a loosely howto-like fashion, the author covers all aspects of keeping intruders out of your web server.
5-0 out of 5 stars Your return will exceed the price in a very short time
Computer security is hard, very hard. Any reasonable attempt to make a system secure has to involve more than a choice between {none, some security features, unusable}. There are so many different things that we want to do with our software and there are probably just as many ways in which it can be attacked. In order to be able to fend off attacks, it is necessary to know what kind of attacks can occur. Finally, many security procedures must be automated, which requires generic defense strategies that are capable of recognizing an attack when it differs slightly from one that has already been planned for.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book filling a huge gap
Understanding how to configure Apache from a security standpoint properly is not easy since the related information is sparse and fragmented. This could be the reason why many web administrators are pretty clueless when it comes to Apache security and why so many web servers are vulnerable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Systems to Heighten Awareness
Ervin Laszlo, one of the greatest minds contributing to systemic theory, has done an excellent job of introducing this construct which takes one "outside the box!" Opening the door to bring heightened awareness of Self and the universe, Laszlo presents systemic and holistic thinking in invitng simplicity, while facilitating the exploration of the same. The world which Laszlo opens to the reader is a world that can inspire visionary thinking, leading us to a more peaceful, understanding existence. I strongly recommend anyone to follow Laszlo into a world of holism, growth and new paths to a more peaceful world!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of systems theory!
If you would like to learn about systems theory with minimal background knowledge, this is an excellent book! It shows how we are all inseperable parts of nature and that everything we do to everyone and everything else influences ourselves as well. It shows us how nature is organized into many levels of whole units. It eloquently shows how we are all parts of larger whole units made of smaller whole units. It is just a wonderful book that reminds us of our connection with the rest of the universe. If you are interested in systems theory, I also recommend another super-fascinating book called "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato that discusses this in relation to human consciousness. It is also one of my favorites! I am sure you will feel that these books are well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best technical books ever written
Ruth is a heroine of the high tech industry. This book is unparelleled in clarity and can be found on most VMS engineers's desk. It offers a vision of how VMS works, but less specifically how an Operating System works and even how a technology book should be written.Folks that have written about Windows NT have sited this book as their inspiration and most folks supporting VMS would rather part with almost any other technical resource. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Technical Book
Clarke's book is going to be a classic in this area of computer science. It is well written and covers just about exactly what one would want in a book on this topic.I am currently re-reading chapters 9 and 10 for more depth of understanding, because at first I was able to get the general idea just by skimming, and it is technical enough in style to satisfy my mathematical needs.
1-0 out of 5 stars hard to read
This book is horribly difficult to read, it is very terse. I found that I could easily follow the things I knew already, but it is not a good book to learn new things from. It is a collection of research results, in a sensible order, but little effort has been made to explain things to the novice. In fact there are research papers which introduce more advanced topics than covered here, and are much easier to read than this book (for example Alur's paper on ATL). It is probably good as a comprehensive reference if you are already familiar with the techniques. It is a shame as there seems to be no other comprehensive book available on model checking. The most accessible introduction remains Manna and Pnueli's "Temporal Verification of Reactive Systems", although it only has one chapter on model checking. ... Read more
