4-0 out of 5 stars A Ton of Information
I recently read the title "Data Center Fundamentals", by Mauricio Arregoces and Maurizio Portolani.ISBN: 1587050234.This title has a ton of information in it.It covers just about every technology that could make up a Data Center environment. The authors have done a good job of cover detail about the several technologies in this title. Some technologies are covered in more detail than others. For example there's a lot of information on HTTP related technologies and not so much detail on say routing protocol. This makes sense, because the title is "Data Center Fundamental".

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book about Postfix
I wasn't looking for esoteric information on how to administer Sendmail. I was looking for a book on Postfix and that's what the author provided. I got the book based a lot on the quality of O'Reilly books and the editor's reputation. Andy Oram is a top notch editor. I recommend this book to any Linux or UNIX person wanting to substitute Postfix for sendmail. Postfix is a drop in replacement for systems configured for sendmail but Postfix is not a monlithic program with lots of vulnerabilities. The author expalins that perfectly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference guide for PostFix

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
If you're looking for a comprehensive guide on setting up a Postfix mail server, then this isn't the book for you.For those that are already familiar with setting up MTAs, the information provided in "The Definitive Guide" is probably enough, but this book only covers a subset of the Postfix configuration parameters and does not provide the step-by-step instructions that many people may be expecting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A real page turner
This book is so interesting that on a couple occasions I've fallen asleep reading it, because I want to "find out what happens next" -- not because it is boring.Even the chapter on queueing theory that has a lot of math in it is understandable and interesting, even though I have a mild aversion to math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance book
I purchased this book and did not open it for about 4 months. After reading the first 25 pages or so I became motivated to read more and finish it.It took me about 2 weeks to read through the entire book. The author does a really good job of detailing how to use Oracle tracing to troubleshoot performance related issues. With no shortage of Oracle performance tuning books this is definitely one of the better ones. This book must be one of the best performance related books because you can read it cover to cover. The book is packed with detail so you will reread several pages a few times, kind of like being in college and spending a couple of hours reviewing a couple of pages out of Calculus book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical techniques that will have an impact on your ETL
Concepts and technical approaches for analyzing and improving the usefullness of source data are presented in a well organized and logical sequence. Not quite a roadmap/algorithm for achieving data quality; it's balanced a little more on the conceptual side. The techniques and concepts presented are ones you _will_ want to begin using if you have any data quality issues in your source data (and who doesn't), I guarantee that.As a working ETL developer referencing disparate, low quality data, this book has had an impact on our approach, our results, and our project.Short and to the point, it's an easy study also!

5-0 out of 5 stars A groundbreaking book! The scoop on Data Profiling.
Jack Olson coined the term "data profiling" and essentially founded this important new field in the area of data quality assessment. His revolutionary techniques, outlined in this book, can provide IT professionals with an important new set of tools for analyzing data quality. This is a must read for anyone working in the data quality field today.I also recommend it for people in related fields such as data warehousing, Enterprise Application Integration, and database design. With so many "me too" books in the computer field, it's a real joy to find a book that really does break new ground.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Data Quality Book (repost)
This book is the clearest, most practical book on data profiling and data quality that I have seen. Jack breaks down data quality issues into specific categories, and leaves you with a vision of what to do if you are building a data warehouse. His practical experience shows through very clearly and he talks to the IT developer (the reader) very effectively.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MS Security
Very nice book , I recommended it for all specialist in Microsoft networking, and systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars preparing for exam
Very helpful for exam 70-350 and daily tasks as IT Network security administrator.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good exam and real world based book
I went to the MOC2824B training a few months ago and didn't like it that much. If you, like me go to the official training you will find that is very much alike. But the autors included a lot of real world notes and insights for the exam on the book that you wont find on the MOC manual. Be ready to mount the practices on a virtual machine environment or real one if you have all the hardware, you will have fun anyways. Labs are filled with very usefull skill building exercises that will entertain you and teach you big time what this great product is all about. I passed the exam last week with 894/1000, and I thank not only my experience with the product but also all the good advice from this book. 3-0 out of 5 stars decent book but not enough
Half of this book is good information and the other half is an index with answers to the book questions.I liked the CD test engine- it helped me pass the 100 question Security+ test today. This book alone is 70% of what you need to pass Security+.Spend your money on measureup.com and transcenders and fill in your knowledge from there.I was able to pass by drilling for a week on 500 different questions rather than reading the fastpass and this book.Careful with measureup as the test I bought was last edited in 2002 but it was still a big help!

5-0 out of 5 stars On the mark for those that want just the facts.
I recently passed the Security+ exam and the Wiley Security+ Prep Guide was one of my main books. Don't let the size of it fool you as it covers the topics including needed details. Though not an Exam Cram type book it is for those users that like to cut out all the fluff and already understand most of the material on the Security+ exam. Though I could have probably passed with this book alone, if you are not comfortable about the topics and are not failry familiar with tcp/ip, VPN's, routers, firewalls, access controls, PKI, malware, etc you may not want to use this as your first book.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, which covers a lot of finer details
I used this book in conjuntion with the Syngress book and exam cram 2 practice questions. This book definitely covers a lot of material in a short amount of time. You could read this in 2 or 3 days if you sat down and took your time with it.It actually filled in alot of gaps that the Syngress book had (small details that actually show up on the exam) Using those 3 books, I scored an 874 on the exam on March 4th. ... Editorial Review

This textbook provides a basic introduction to the fundamentals of current computer designs. As the title suggests, the text skirts the border between hardware and software. After an overview of the subject and a discussion of performance, the book launches into technical matter such as instruction sets, how they are constrained by the underlying processor hardware, the constraints on their design, and more. An excellent critique of computer arithmetic methods leads to a high-level discussion on processor design. Following is a great introduction to pipelining, nice coverage of memory issues, and solid attention to peripherals. The book concludes with a brief discussion of the additional issues inherent in multiprocessing machines. The extremely lucid description is grounded in real-world examples. Interesting exercises help reinforce the material, and each section contains a write-up of the historical background of each idea. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference text book for student.
I used this book for my undergraduate level of computer organization course. The book gives a complete reference to the subjects we need to know about computer hardware structure. However, the explanation for each topic could be better prepare so that it will help reader following through the contents easier.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better texts on hardware
If you have to use this book in a college course and you are not directed to do so, download the SPIM simulator (MIPS spelled backwards) the author mentions in the book. This can help you understand some of the more complex topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight, without being boring
This is an excellent book, and it helped me a lot in understanding the basic techniques of hacking.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Work
This is one of thosw rear books that get five stars from me. The book is very straigntforward: it is short, it is free of unnecessary explanations, it is pretty detailed and well organized. The book assumes you know quite a bit about computers in general and low-level OS organization in particular. It gives a plethora of interesting examples to try out, so even if you're not particularly interested in the low-level detailes of how a certain trick works, you still remain in the zone by simply applying those examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent book
I own about 30 books about Access (all versions). This book tops all of them. If you are using Access 2000 or 2002(XP) and you like to know about SQL Server (2000), trust me this is it. Try to read it from begining to the end. It's written in english language (not technical slang) and it shows you some cool tricks even for those Access 97 users. Hope to see more books from these guys. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent Resource for SQL Server and Access
This book is well written and easy to follow. The explanations are written in clear language and instructions are written out step by step. The book is well organized which means it's easy to use it more as a reference book. But, it is such a pleasure to read, you want want to skip a single page. This book covers both very elemental aspects of SQL, but also has much to offer the more experienced user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best - is #1 in my top 3 books to "use".
I read a lot of books covering topics from Access, SQL Server, to VBA.This book covers all of the "required" Access topics. It covers them better than any other book I have ever seen.It then goes on to cover topics I have not seen in other books or classes. While reading the book you will catch yourself saying why have I never seen this before, or hey I can use this! It uses Jet, Transact & VBA. Do you want to build better applications, do you want to know more than the competition, do you want to be a better developer? If so, this book is a definite purchase.Read more

An experienced SAS programmer, I used the many helpful examples in this book to learn a lot about PROC SQL in just a few days.(I skipped the text.)I trust the few typos and obscure passages will be cleared up in a subsequent edition.I thought the sections on normalization and integrity constraints were skimpy. The book has also been favorably reviewed in The American Statistician 2005, vol. 59, no. 4, pp. 350

5-0 out of 5 stars Best $12 I ever spent!!!
I bought this book on cheap clearance after the original publisher went out of business -- the best $12 I ever invested.Remembering even 10% of this book makes you better than 90% of Oracle developers, modelers and architects.Mr. Kyte's real world experience and reliance on solid examples instead of folklore makes this light-years ahead of any other Oracle book; it's the only Oracle book I re-read regularly. If you can afford only one Oracle book, this is it.And you may not need any other.

Thos book provides clear-cut examples, syntax, and the results of the various SQL commands that are most likely to be needed byany programmer. All the basics from simple SELECT statements are coveredall the way up to ORDER BY clauses, joins and so on. A special chapter onusing SPUFI was also a big help. The emphasis here is on the COBOL languageand mainframe computers, but it is an excellent learning tool for anyone. The book teaches by example and can be finished easily within a week (Theexample programs are what make it look so big). A must-read for anyoneinterested in relationall databases. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A very bad book
This book doesn't cost its money.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book worked for me
I used this book, and one other, to take and pass the Oracle Certified Professional exam (OCP).The other book I used was Oracle Press' PL/SQL Program Units Exam Guide, which focuses just on the second exam. This book covers all of the exams, but the second exam is especially difficult, and a friend recommended that one for that exam specifically.2-0 out of 5 stars Too basic
Good book for a beginner (this is an excellent intro to SQL and PL/SQL), but not enough depth for the exams. It covers all the necessary areas, but barely skims the surface on numerous important topics.I recommend the Sybex book (even though it's a little dry). For each test, I'd start with this book and then move on to another text; that should be all you need to pass the exams.Be sure to PRACTICE; that's by far the most important element of success. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point
This is short and sweet.Of all the Oracle books I have read, this is among the best if not the best.I'm not affiliated with the author, reviewer, or publisher so I get nothing for saying it.
4-0 out of 5 stars a good resource
I found many helpful items in the book.I would prefer more information on applying oracle patches thru dbconsole and manually. More Windows examples would be great

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for 10g DBAs
The book is a solid, painstakingly detailed Oracle 10g DBA handbook. This book covers the latest Oracle 10g Release 2 features in detail and is an excellent reference for DBAs as well as developers and managers who are using the 10g database.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not bother
This book is a joke. It is poorly written, the grammar is crazy and wrong, and it dwells too much on events that are not important (click next, and click next, then click ok, and then next...). You would be well-advised to read another book, as well as BOL, before attempting 70-228.
4-0 out of 5 stars passed first ime.... but....
I just passed 70-228 first time using just this book and BOL as guides. I found the first half of this book a waste of time.Way too much attention to how-to examples of performing steps in the GUI (Click this, click next, click OK).The second half, however, was much more useful. One thing though. It is useful in that it offers a failry concise, objective by objective, summary of what you will need to know for the exam and then points to BOL for the actual information. It is short on providing information in and of itself.
1-0 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time and money!
Luckily I am already an Oracle DBA or I would not have been able to make real-world sense of the material presented in this book. In my opinion, it is pretty much worthless if you are preparing for the 70-228 exam or if you are wanting to work with SQL Server on the job. However, it is a great doorstopper/paperweight (which is why it is worth one star). Yes, I have passed the 70-228 exam, but I can guarantee you my passing had absolutely nothing to do with this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for self-learner
My boss asked me to develop a leave system. I have no experience about Access VBA before. I bought a lot of books. However most of them are too thick and theoretical. No step by step examples are provided. Fortunately after reading this one, I can finish my task now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Access 2000 with Visual Basic for Applications
I consider this book to be ideal for people needing real hands on knowledge of Access. I'm using it in self-study to learn advanced concepts and VBA. I feel this is the ideal text for the self-learner.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for intermediate users.
Considering that it's only one volume, this book is about as comprehensive as you can get. Good instruction, great index, and an excellent accompanying cd with exercises and additional information. The book itself could have been more concise, though. At times it's repetative and redundant, but for no other reason than to clarify the author's methodolgy behind the current lesson. Being an intermediate user, this was a great book; however, if you consider yourself advanced, I'd skip this and try to find something more specific. This isn't really a great book for beginners either; you'd probably find it a bit overwhelming and the terminology a bit confusing. Regardless, it's a great reference tool for any user, and I recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as you might think
I have had "Bibles" of the last 3 versions of Access. I was disappointed with the earlier versions in that they did not go into macros and VBA as much as I wanted. I was overjoyed that this version does, but found many problems. All the books in the "Bible" series have problems with proofing. There are too many typos. Even a section on spell check in this book had the wrong words entered for the spell check. The bigger problem is with the examples provided on the CD. Some files are missing in the chapters. And the coding does not always work. I tried to program a personal project using a much-needed procedure and could not get it or my lesson to work. What a surprise - the completed project that was provided on the CD did not work either. Wiley needs to proof and test more before going to press. Also a little too high level for beginner Access users - assumes that the average user understands the VBA terms and their applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars ACCESS Bible
This was third helper I found--it should have been the first. All I would have needed! ... Read more
