4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to MySQL
As a beginner to MySQL I bought this book to gain an insight into the how's and why's of using MySQL. Overall having read the book from cover to cover ( a first for me as far as computer books go ) I can thoroughly recommend this book to anyone new to using MySQL. The layout is clear, the text easily readable, not too techie at first but still a great deal of examples for you to get up and running.
4-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for novice to intermediate 4 for professionals
The first three chapters of this book deal with the basics of MySQL including basic concepts, column and table types, keys, indexes, and normalization. The authors have written an excellent introduction to MySQL that provides all the core information you need to start using it right away. The chapter on finding the bottlenecks is one of the best sections in the book and details some of the finer points to be considered when creating your database. On the other hand, the part on optimizing queries is excellent for the beginning MySQL student (which is the target audience for this book) but not as good as it could be for the more experienced MySQL user.Perhaps I am just more sensitive to this area because of all the badly done queries I have had to deal with before.A good understanding of just this part can make a tremendous difference in optimization. If you are new to SQL queries the authors have done a great job of explaining why this is important and how to understand it when a query takes under a minute to run and then after a small change takes twenty. The last section covers accessing the MySQL database via other programming languages such as PHP.Beginning MySQL Database Design and Optimization is a recommended read for its target audience - the beginning MySQL programmer.

4-0 out of 5 stars improve your MySQL usage
If you already know the basics of MySQL, then this book can be a nifty boost to your productivity. The authors plow straight into giving good tips for better table design. For example, the first chapter covers MySQL basics. But it furnishes very understandable advice. Like never using spaces in identifier names. While MySQL permits this, it greatly increases chances of logic errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great deal of original material -- suitable for both new and experienced data modelers
I just finished a semester-long graduate course that used this book as one of three textbooks.I am an experienced, mid-career data modeler and developer of database-centered applications and I have used entity-relationship diagrams for years, so I was initially a little concerned that this text would not have much new for me.I was also suspicious of the author's notation because it leaves out a number of syntactical elements I was accustomed to using in UML and other data modeling languages. However, I was very pleased and surprised with the amount of valuable and original content in this book, and I have significantly altered my modeling practices as a result.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very important book.
The secret is out!3-0 out of 5 stars Beware- there's alot more to Data Modeling than this!
I disagree that a person could become a "master" data modeler if the contents of this book are the complete set of skills in their arsenal. While the book outlines some good techniques for interviewing end users and basic data modeling skills, there is alot more involved in data modeling than what is covered here.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good buy
We used this book for our graduate level course and the instructor(author) asked us to read the book. But there are4-0 out of 5 stars Almost complete. Very good.
Very interesting, well written reading. The main problem is completeness: although some new topics are covered, other, more traditional, butfundamental, are not. One simple example: triggers.

4-0 out of 5 stars VERY WORTHWHILE
If you are new to Access and want to learn how to do things, this book is very helpful. If you are an experienced user and want to become an expert, this book may not have everything you need.We use this manual in conjunction with the Video Professor and between the two, we are now very comfortable with Access.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow - exactly what it says!
I own a Network Consulting firm which handles IT for Small to Medium businesses. That said, I know zilch about Microsoft Access.Recently a client asked I provide them with a simple inventory managment database. While I actually set them up with an out of box solution, I figured I should learn Access to possibly do our own development.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Way To Learn Access
The Pogue Press line does it again!!When I looked down at the retail price for this book I couldn't believe my eyes.If you are new to Microsoft Access and want to ramp up quickly on how to use this exciting application, you would be hard-pressed to find a better bargain to get up to speed in no time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete nonsense
There is no technical information whatsoever in this book. It should be catalogued under "non-fiction", "PR" or "shameless self-promotion", rather than "computer science".

3-0 out of 5 stars Whats Missing
The analysis is very detailed on a conceptual basis, not a technical one. Its promise to use Wal Marts modeling as a primary example is only partially met and that is very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
This is an outstanding book for ASP programmers ... It serves as a great reference source on a variety of topics. I have been very impressed with the depth and breadth of coverage (contrary to one of the reviews I read). Great value. It'll remain on my shelf for a long time.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a BAD choice for me
I ordered the book and read it. I think that the book is not good for any ASP programmer. First, it is not complete. For example, it didn't cover server.transfer, which is an excellent feature in ASP 3.0. Second, the description about ADO is so simple that I cannot get any idea about ADO.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for ASP Programming
I'm an experienced programmer with 10 years of VB Client/Server and new to the WEB.The WEB is maddeningly different. This book has provided me with THE road map of modern ASP development. It is well organized. Each chapter is well selected. The content of each chapter is such that the subject is adequately covered and I can always get the book from which the chapter is extracted if I want more information. As one commenter put it, its like getting the work product of a half dozen research assistants, each of whom sifted dozens of books.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars nice introduction to topic for computer science and stats
This is a book by Springer Verlag that came out if 1999.This book introduces a lot of useful statistical tools and has chapters written by statisticians and computer scientists. The editors also contribute. They emphasize useful tools and computer tools. It includes material from the artificial intelligence literature including fuzzy set logic, genetic algorithms and expert systems. There is some discussion of data mining, Bayesian methods and neural networks.5-0 out of 5 stars Broadly Useful Reference For Intellignet Data Analysis
This book provides a detailed presentation of several important approaches to intelligent data analysis. It has ten chapters, each chapter written by a different technical specialist. The book could well serve as a text for a graduate level course on data analysis. It also works well as a reference. There are many useful illustrations and examples.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for developers.
This reads like an ADO.NET user manual where all possibilities are mentioned but lack reasoning and coherence in the subject. Its not an easy read and was not written for develoipers who needs to quickly get to the topic instead itsmore for trainers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference/Resource Book
This book covers those things about ADO.NET you cannot seem to find anywhere else - web, books, etc. Examples in the book provide straight-to-the-point information and details.
4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive reference to ADO.NET

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad approach
The book wastes too much time with webalchemy. It is a bad idea to build your development strategy on a tool that is not supported by a major vendor. Oracle products are moving forward too quickly to depend on a tool that probably will not keep pace. Using this book as a reference is difficullt at best. Examples are too complicated for use in presenting a new topic. The author should use the 'hello world' concept that so many other authors do. Prospective buyers should say 'goodbye book'. I have as yet been unable to discover a good reference book for OAS.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent piece of work for both Beginers & Experts
I am fairly new to the IT World, specially the Web technology. This book gave me a clear understanding of the Web concepts. The book is written very meticulously. The explanations are very clear and to the point with very good examples. Truly, it is a Toolkit Reference and can be used to develop any kind of Oracle Web Application. The book covers all topics from the Installation of the Oracle Web Server to the Development of Oracle Web Applications. 2-0 out of 5 stars This book is a mess
Granted, there is a lot of good information in this text, however, it's presented in a format that is neither intuative or flowing.Even the examples are overly complicated, almost like the author(s) are attempting to obscure the very point that needs to be made w/ extraneous code. It's a same that the documentation on this subject so poor. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good foundation, but getting rapidly obsolete
I enjoyed reading this book and found it an excellent foundation to issues in data warehousing. However, note that this book was published in 1997, so it does not include anything that was developed after that date. (To be fair, it accurately predicts some trends.) I wish the author would update the book to 2004!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Only for Beginners
This book is good for total beginners, to get familiar with the Data-Warehousing Lingo's. Though the author does tend to give some wague out of the blue examples, it is an interesting read. Buy it only if you have no clue what a database or data warehousing is.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for total beginners and laypeople
This book is good for the person completely new to data warehousing, as long as they DON'T take it as the complete or last word on the subject. Most of the basic concepts are presented well, but there are various errors in some of the specifics, and there are some theories described that are 'old school' and not necessarily relevant with todays technology (in the last 5 years data warehousing has changed in the capability of tools and in approaches & architecture).Read more

Editorial Review

Tom Kyte is of a rare breed. To begin, he's technically expertin his subject (administration of and development of applications forOracle database management systems). What's more (and whatdistinguishes him from the ranks of the super-competent), he is bothable and willing to share his considerable store of wisdom with Oracleusers via books like Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best $12 I ever spent!!!
I bought this book on cheap clearance after the original publisher went out of business -- the best $12 I ever invested.Remembering even 10% of this book makes you better than 90% of Oracle developers, modelers and architects.Mr. Kyte's real world experience and reliance on solid examples instead of folklore makes this light-years ahead of any other Oracle book; it's the only Oracle book I re-read regularly. If you can afford only one Oracle book, this is it.And you may not need any other.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantasic
A true masterpiece, and a great way to learn Oracle concepts. No more to say.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and well explained
Thick Oracle book which is intended for developers who might need to understand the Oracle internals and administration parts besides writing SQL. It's useful for them working in other database also as the general database concept is simlar. Developers can now have more DBA knowledges after reading before on-going performing some DBA task. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Purchasing Larry Ullman's book is as good as signing up for any online course in PHP.The exercises in the book are perfectly explained in simple language; I'm 1/3 through, and NOTHING has confused me yet.Any questions that are not answered in the text can be addressed in the online forum which is frequented by the author. I won't hesitate to buy any of Larry's other titles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy as PHP
This is the most perfect programming book I've read, and the most easily understood. I only wish I'd had it 3 years ago. It's great for beginners not only to PHP but to programming in general.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver MX Database
I have waited almost two months and the book still hasnt been shipped. I am still waiting for it to arrive. I hope this book is worth waiting for....

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starting Point
I am an experienced web developer but was looking for a way to start using databases on my sites. The book is a good introduction to using many different databases and development languages with Dreamweaver MX.3-0 out of 5 stars Covers a lot but not in depth
When I first flipped through the contents of this book, my first impression was, "Cool, it covers everything!" However, my second impression, after looking though it, was that it covers it all so shallowly, that it's not worth the time to read it. But then, my THIRD impression was that that's probably what the authors had in mind - give a broad overview of the topic(s), then let you purchase other books or training to go in depth on the areas you need.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for data structures using java
I was looking for a latest edition of a book on data structures using Java. Lafore, Martinetc. are good texts but since collection API has introduced in jdk 1.2, those books seems to be obsolete. This book discusses new API and classes provided by java environment, so we need not to be bogged down by writing the unnecessary code. I feel this book is good for professionals in the industry as well as students of computer science. Algorithms are dealt with in detail with all the mathematical proofs involved, regarding efficiency and complexity. Various data structures are discussed with sufficient number of examples. Its a language specific book on data structures and algorithms, so if you are looking for a general book ar if you are working with any other language you will be dissappointed but surely a good book for java programming language. ...
