5-0 out of 5 stars Far and away the best book for everyone!
This is simply the best HTML and CSS book.It has basically everything you need to know, with easy-to-find, easy-to-understand, and concise descriptions. It it not "web for dummies," rather, it is a very sophisticated and realistic approach to HTML and CSS, without a lot of hype or self-promotion.If you want to hear people wax poetical about the "EM" unit, you can get the book by Lie & Bos, but I think Castro's book is far more useful. She gives links to many web sites to help with more advanced stuff (Javascript, etc.), which is nice, but the book itself is incredibly comprehensive. And the layout of the book is a model for all instructional texts.A winner!

4-0 out of 5 stars For Reference or for learning
Elizabeth Castro has been writing Visual Quickstart Guides to HTML and web design in an easy to understand manner. Now she provides resources for those who would be interested in web design that will create sites that are usable for years to come. Since I first picked up the fourth edition of this book, I have been hooked on the series, because its explanations are written on a level for the average person. The organization allows the reader to move at their own pace and easily refer back to topics that they want to refresh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coding
This book was a real help to me when I first became addicted to coding. The pictures are quite helpful, or at least more helpful than long explanations, and Elizabeth Castro is a fabulous writer. I learned so much that I went on to learn many other programming and coding languages with ease. You don't need to have any experience to use this book, it explains everything. Visual QuickStart Guide's are the best type in the market, cheap and easy to understand. So if you are itching to learn another computer language, I suggest checking them out! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book ofr those using the SQL Plus command line or GUI tool
Oracle SQL Plus: The Defnitive Guide
4-0 out of 5 stars the glories of the command line
The glories of the command line. SQLPlus [I am not going to write that irritating asterix] is an acknowledgment of the reality that for many large computer programs and operating systems, a command line utility is vital. The book explains this for the specific instance of hooking to Oracle's database. It is meant as a definitive reference. Showing every command, often accompanied by example code.
5-0 out of 5 stars great guide
I have found this book to be a really great guide that is easy to follow. The author provides a gentle, but thorough introduction to topics like creating reports, writing scripts, customization etc.He offers methodologies and alternatives beyond the syntax that you can find in the manual. For example, he presents and evaluates six ways one can achieve some kind of if-then-else flow control in SQL*Plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Starters to Main Course
Very satisfying reading experience. Starting off rudimentary and keying into a maturity withing 5 chapters - hats off to David.
4-0 out of 5 stars Potentially valuable, but primarily as a reference.
I've done some data modeling, and much more process modeling, so I was familiar with Mr. Hay's objectives with respect to data and restricting the model to logical representations of data, whatever that may be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to think like a data modeler
I can understand why this book has gotten some mixed reviews. The author addresses many common modeling problems. But readers looking for instant solutions to those problems will probably be disappointed. Those looking for oop patterns are reading the wrong book. And anyone looking for a beginner's introduction to data modeling will be completely lost. But if you've been feeling as if your database designs could be better, but you're not sure how, you need this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just enough DB design without being complicated
This book is now next to my desk as a reference text. It does a good job at explaining the basics of relational database models and how they fit into a modern business architecture. The authors obviously have a methodology that works for them and the chapters seem to be organized according to their methodology. They start with UML, analyze the model in UML for potential problems, then move into SQL, normalization at the SQL stage, and end with an example. It's nicely written and concise.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to data modeling
I also am a reviewer of the book and an interested colleague. I've used this book since its first edition as my main reference on basic data modeling, and I have been happy to comment on its newer editions. This 4th edition improves on earlier ones by including the Unified Modeling Language (UML), my own first choice for a design language for data modeling. The chapter on the UML includes everything you need, but it keeps it as simple and straightforward as possible, making the material very accessible. The real contribution of the book is in the normalization chapter and in the excellent description and examples of n-ary relationships and the consequences of their multiplicities, a very-hard-to-understand corner of the data modeling world. The inclusion in this edition of material on OLAP and data warehousing is also welcome, though very limited in scope. Finally, moving the physical design material into a separate book makes this book much more cohesive and useful as a reference for data modeling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Data Modelers, etc.
For those in Data Modeling, Data Architecture, and similar disciplines, I highly recommend this book !An excellent discussion of database design and modeling, practices and techniques. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Practical Advice
Good practical advice for improving data quality. Covers the most common data quality problems.Well written. Some other sources to look at online:
5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and Thorough
I like this book quite a bit because although it's not a huge doorstop of a tome in terms of length, it's quite complete and thorough. Some data quality books cover management aspects, some the technical aspects, and some take other angles. This book takes a look at all of the different angles on data quality and sums them up into a very nice package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear distinction between ERM and the relational Model
This book teaches a product independant step by step approach to design a relational database. The autors clearly differentiate between data modeling (ERM) and Relational Database Design. Even if the book is older than 10 years, it is very helpful to design databases with current products like Oracle 9i, DB2 V8 etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good base for a DB worker
Database design has taken so many leaps since this book was written, but the concepts you'll find in this book are still very sound. As a beginning data modeler you would gain a lot from these pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on RDBMS
I purchased this book because it was a mandatory reference in database course. This contains lots of fundamental concepts of relational database. It is a well-organized book starting from LDM rules then to RDD rules with tons of practical examples. The authors does a very good job in explaining and clarifying all the essences, even a trivial point is made clear. This is a must-have for all of you who have to deal with relational database. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars quick "How to's ..."
When trying to figure out how to implement something, do you ever wish that the examples you find would just 'cut to the chase'? ... skip the theory & just show me a rough idea of how to go about it?
4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
If you've worked with PHP for a while, you probably already know some of the hacks in this book - I did. But it did give me several ideas and I definitely picked up some new tricks and tips from it, so it was worth the buy for me. I love the "hack" books - I always learn something new!

5-0 out of 5 stars good examples and good source code...
This is a very real world book, and gives some good examples with accurate working source code.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Good Reading. From a design point of view, one of the best. Great for any seasoned ColdFusion Developer who wants to implement best practices in their applications.I highly reccommend this book for ColdFusion Developers with approx. 1-2 years of experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ready to Raise Your Skill Level?
Having been a full time ColdFusion Developer for nearly five years, I've had my fill of books that only offer the most shallow introductions to topics covered. This book is not one of those books - it's outstanding! There are thirteen coauthors and their combined efforts have produced an excellent resource any experienced developer should appreciate. Ramond Camden wrote the book's introduction, and, at its conclusion he wrote: "The mission of this book is to take you "outside the box" and provide the extra skills you need to be a successful ColdFusion developer in today's demanding environment." In my opinion, they fulfilled their mission! 4-0 out of 5 stars Playing catch-up on Cold Fusion's new features
Five years ago I was called upon to learn Cold Fusion over a weekend before starting a new assignment. I picked up Ben Forta's original Cold Fusion book and read three or four chapters on the way home on the train, picking up the bulk of what I needed to know to do my work in a few short hours. I've done a lot of work with Cold Fusion since then, and used that book to pick up many of the finer points of the craft, including the CFPOP and CFMAIL tags which I used to build a web-based e-mail service.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference book

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book in a field that has few of them
This is a pretty good book on Java programming in a field that has few alternatives. I first bought the book Java Database Programming Bible, but it was over my head.
1-0 out of 5 stars Someone is kidding someone. Guess who is kidding whom?
Book is not close to anything worthwhile paying for. This title should be changed to 'Some stuff about databases'. Has a M$ bias as shown by using access as database. Using jdbc to odbc as connection type with little to no examples. If the whole book was a here is how to use java to connect to and use data from a database he 'Jim Keogh' might have produced something worth the title and price. Mr. Keogh is Chair E-Commerce Track of Columbia University? That is scary. This book should be a not thanks I will pass.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor dummies book, same thing over and over.
This book has one redeeming fact, it shows you the methods and programming blocks to set up a Java application ready to execute SQL commands, and then it repeats the same thing over and over every chapter for the rest of the book!Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars No Java source codes available
One major problem with this book, particularly for beginners like me, is that the Java source codes are UNAVAILABLE.To try the code in the book, you have to type, which obviously is a tremendous wate of time and frustration. There are no alternative. Hope that the author may immediately act to resolve the issue. Considering the amount of frustration that I have gone through, even two stars are a generous rating for this book. Now I am looking for other data structure books which are rated good and provide source codes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to read about data structures and algorithms with little to no knowledge about them
This book for people who do know little to nothing about data structures and algorithms in a programming language. If you do not know much about data structures and algorithms then the mere thought of learning them on your own can make you afraid of them. On top of that there aren't many books written in Java that talk about them. But this book makes learning it as easy as having an ice cream. As the title suggests, all algorithms and code examples have been written in Java. If you laready know Java then it is very easy to understand the chapters and the examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment to review from Cambridge
I just wanted to say, please ignore the previous review (from Cambridge). A good designer needs also a good theoretical base. One chapter might go a bit far but it's only one of many! It is indeed a true compendium!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
a good book for sigma delta modulator design. a lot of deep insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive discussion of issues in sigma delta mod.
This is the only book I know of that gives such a thorough discussion on the state of the art in sigma delta modulation, including design tips and insight into the authors' own experiences.A necessity for anyoneconsidering the design of a high-order modulator. It is not an introductorytext, and does assume basic knowledge in signal processing and A/Dconversion in general. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Spatial , Multidimensional, and Metric Data Structures and Algorithms
A stunning 1000 page encyclopedia of spatial, multidimensional, and metric data structures and algorithms presented in the Knuth tradition. The general coverage is broader than an older, now out of print and expensive:"Design and Analysis of Spatial Data Structures". In a surprise, the new book is not only the size of a telephone directory, but it has double the number of useful pages. 4 extensive chapters cover data structures and algorithms for: points, objects and images, intervals and small rectangles, and the same data types in higher +dimensions.Within each chapter, the algorithms and clearly presented and are accompanied by an extensive use of figures. The algorithms which run from the expected to the exotic are summarized by the table of contents at the publisher's web site. Unexpected algorithms are also covered including: nearest neighbor finding which is useful for clustering applications, image pyramids, and object pyramids or hierarchies such as R-trees.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides one with a good vantage of core components in designing an effective database
This book gives you a points-to-points look-in on various core aspects ie: component parts & pieces, which earmark & characterizes the design of an effective database system
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information for Anyone
Realistically, software developers are not the only only people who utilize databases.Any person who professionally works with computers deals with databases whether they know it or not.The database may not be a physical entity like a SQL or JET file, but something more subtle or conceptual such as your computers file system, the registry, the Active Directory, etc.The ability to understand and leverage databases is of great benefit to all IT professionals, and this book is a great place to start.
4-0 out of 5 stars understanding modelling diagrams
Relational databases have a well developed theory underpinning them. Often described in formal maths language that can be offputting to a newcomer without that background. The merit of Riordan's book is to show that you can often understand and design such databases, without recourse to such formalisms, which greatly expands the potential audience for the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This is the excellent book for everyone who wants to study statistics using SPSS software. Easy to read, very friendly, lots of examples and explanations. Wonderful sense of humor (can you believe it in a book on statistics?). I recommend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource
I teach Research Methods at a Canadian university and this book is an incredibly valuable resource. Some books are just about statistics theory, others are just how-to guides. This book does both and connects the theory with SPSS. It has lots of hands-on examples that you can work through with the CD-ROM. I have found it to be extremely useful as a reference, for learning new techniques, and for figuring out how to teach students a particular statistical concept or application with SPSS. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to professors, graduate students, or anyone else planning on using SPSS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple overview of stats and how to use the software
SPSS is a popular software package used by graduate students in the social sciences, since it's a user-friendly software unlike some of the more complicated packages like SAS or Minitab that require programming language and a very sound understanding of statistics before you use them. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
As the suffix title suggests, this book _does_not_rush_ things; very obviously catered for novice developers, it slowly oozes out information a step at a time. The authors exhibit their virtuous patience by going into great lengths to introduce the technology concepts that support XML web services, complete with comprehensive diagrams. These base explanations facilitate a firmer foundational understanding that no developer of XML web services should do without.
5-0 out of 5 stars I give this book an A+
I found it to be a very good intro for beginners in XML Web Services like myself.Highly recomended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial for beginners.
I am half way through the book and I like it. It is a good tutorial that will hold your hand and help you taking your first steps on the planet WebServices. The authors selected an interesting and practical example subject, validating credit card numbers, so you will not need a lot of coffee to keep you awake.
