5-0 out of 5 stars Could not put the book down
I bought this book thinking that i would get some good ideas in order to get a little bit more performance from our servers, however once i started reading i could not put it down until 5 hours later.5-0 out of 5 stars Total Coverage
This books answers the questions that most others do not. A very technical approach, with great editing and no errors. The books covers architectural issues, Oracle tuning but scores really big in optimizing the Solaris environment (OS and hardware/disk).

5-0 out of 5 stars Once in a bluemoon a classic is born!
This book doesn't belong on your bookshelf it belongs on your desk beside your workstation. Mr. Packer's clarity, conciseness and comprehensiveness in his coverage of a complex topic is a tour de force that few technical writers are able to achieve these days. Written for an intelligent reader in mind, the subject matter is explained simply, directly and elegantly. No profusions of analogies, this author knows what he's talking about and he can explain it.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a Good Reference for Data Schema
I have NOT read this book. I give it 4 stars since I admire the courage of the authors to let you review their data schemas. Reading the modeling done by others is still one of the best approach to learn data modeling. However, most of us can not share our design with you since they are valuable corporate assets.
3-0 out of 5 stars good for a start, but...
This is a good book to get the juices flowing if you are unsure of how to model certain business processes, but some of the models in the book are poor examples of database design. Some of the data warehouse models, in particular, are alarmingly bad, and don't follow some proven best practices. 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice reference to start ER-modeling
Whether you are a beginner or have some experience in data modeling, this book can save you much time. It is absolutely practical and full of samples that you can use almost right away. I like the way the authors model people and organisations. The only thing that is missing here is demography/firmography which usually is paid great attention in data warehousing. I did not like the fact that the chapters on dimensional modeling only give an idea that there are modeling techniques other than ER-modeling. To learn them better I recommend one of those Kimball's books on dimensional modeling. So, this and other minor flaws gives the book four stars instead of five. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!
This is an excellent XSLT/XPATH resource! However, please be aware that the "Unlimited-Edition.com" website/resource is no longer available!A big reason why I bought this book was for the updated content it promised. But, that was 2001, this is 2006, and any updated content that may have been available is no longer accessible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book
If you are looking for a book on dealing with real world XSLT scenarios and organized accordingly by scenario. This is the book for you. Jeni (Author) is by far one of the leading XSLT experts out there. It is rare you find someone that can explain complex topics in a manor that is both concise and readable. Buy this book and it will stay with you through any project you are using XSLT on.

5-0 out of 5 stars great help for practical tasks
This book does not teach you the concepts of XSLT. Rather, it truly delivers on a promise of providing answers to common problems. While often books use code to only illustrate the concepts explained, "XSLT and XPath On The Edge" has tons of real world code, some of which I was able to use straight from the book(without changing a thing). 4-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Excellent Book for the "Beginner"
This book is really quite good. It's very interesting & definitely very readable. When I read it, I got straight down to business, so to speak. It gives very practical examples starting you off with making a movie review site which was very interesting! All in all, an excellent book to give you a working knowledge of PHP & MySQL.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid coverage of beginning topics
I used this book as a tutorial on the subject with graduate students who had only basic programming experience and we all agreed that it was a great way to get started with database-backed PHP work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth One Star
Worst book of all time, sorry guys and gals but whoever wrote and edited this book should buy a book themselves "Learn to Write and Edit by DUMMIES".To many typo's and script errors which did not work!

3-0 out of 5 stars MCDBA, MCSE, MCSD, MCAD Training Guide
The book met the requirements of the course it was being used for... it was how ever a little bit lax on the code portion...when it came to doing the project it left a bit to be desired in clarity of how to build a data base in SQL...

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!!
Why can't authors ever flow through a book in an ordely manner? What is the point of jumping from chapter to chapter? For example, many times through out this book references are being made to up coming chapters about specific topics in chapters that don't belong there. Why do you tell the reader about an up coming topic in a chapter that doesn't belong there and then ask a question about it in the chapter test. Why even make a chapter about that specific topic if your going to include it in a chapter that doesn't belong there?Thats a little redundent!!Also the author likes to give you examples on how to do certain things the right way, and then tests you on something he never covered in the chapter. If the topic has nothing to do with the chapter, do not include in the chapter. If you do include it into a chapter in which it doesn' belong, don't include it into the chapter test. How do you expect the reader to completely understand and answer the question if he or she knows nothing about it?Unless, your wanting the reader to stop what there doing, flip to the chapter and read it, then go back to the previous chapter your testing on just for that one little question that doesn't belong.Rediculous!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as dead on as others in the series
I just passed the 70-229 exam this morning with an 862. My study strategy involved reading this book cover to cover over a 2 week period and taking some uCertify practice exams.

2-0 out of 5 stars very frustrating
I find the book extremely frustrating to use primarily because it does not provide step-by-step directions to anything. E.g., the section "Selecting the Target Server" (p. 140) shows me the "Select Target Server" dialog. BUT HOW DO I GET TO THAT DIALOG? This is typicalof the book. The section on the report browser (p. 144) shows me the Report Browser window (Fig 7.6)-but HOW DO I GET TO THAT WINDOW?

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful primer for ERwin
While I have to agree with some earlier reviews that criticize the book for not being a complete reference, I found it far more useful than the LogicWorks/Platinum manuals as a guide to getting started and developing an intelligent approach to getting work done using ERwin. Ms. De Angelis has a clear writing style and does not hesitate to tell the reader how she thinks things should be done. She spends a good bit of time in explaining the fundamentals of data modeling, which is appropriate and useful for the book's intended audience. Not expensive, and probably a good investment for someone trying to get up to speed or who has used the product for a while and would like some guidance in how to use it more effectively.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs more Tips and Techniques
Considering the thousands you'll spend on data modeling tools and the tens of thousands on salaries, you can't go too far wrong by spending...on a book about a data modeling tool.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Distributed Systems
This book is a little more expensive than most of the flashy Web Services books these days but it is well worth the money. Set in small font and not wasting pages on chapters like "History of XML and SOAP" this book is dense in content on the architecture of distributed systems, including Web Services. We get to learn about the issues of distributed transactions and the differences between conversations, coordination and orchestration. The text is precise but nevertheless easy to follow. One of the best books I have seen on Web Services architecture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive

4-0 out of 5 stars To the point!
Hardening Apache by Tony Mobily is a book for server administrators who want to learn how to secure the Apache web server. On 260 pages, in a loosely howto-like fashion, the author covers all aspects of keeping intruders out of your web server.
5-0 out of 5 stars Your return will exceed the price in a very short time
Computer security is hard, very hard. Any reasonable attempt to make a system secure has to involve more than a choice between {none, some security features, unusable}. There are so many different things that we want to do with our software and there are probably just as many ways in which it can be attacked. In order to be able to fend off attacks, it is necessary to know what kind of attacks can occur. Finally, many security procedures must be automated, which requires generic defense strategies that are capable of recognizing an attack when it differs slightly from one that has already been planned for.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book filling a huge gap
Understanding how to configure Apache from a security standpoint properly is not easy since the related information is sparse and fragmented. This could be the reason why many web administrators are pretty clueless when it comes to Apache security and why so many web servers are vulnerable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Extensions? What extensions?
You would think that a PHP book that actually mentioned "Extensions" as part of the title would cover extensions wouldn't you? Well in the case of this book you would be wrong. The index has exactly 1 entry for 'extensions' and even that is a 1 sentence footnote! Compare that to the 45 pages devoted to the subject in George Schlossnagle's book "Advanced PHP Programming" and you can get an idea of actually how deficient this book is in this aspect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
This is really only for advanced PHP programmers. If you are one, it maybe will render in 5 star.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
I bought this book with high expectations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Missed the point in many areas
This book looks like a very useful textbook, but upon ovening the cover it does not help with the advanced concepts of Designer. Many sections, especially chapter 3, were fraught with errors, and it appears that the text was not edited for content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I have significant experience in all aspects of system design using other tools (i.e. Visio) and am working toward an Oracle Master certificate as a Design Engineer, so I found myself bypassing many of the early chapters geared toward design methodology; however, for those with less experiencethey can be very useful.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all-in-one book, but could use more on generation.
As usual, the authors have produced a very useful and easily readable work.An absolute must to those interested in using this tool, especially if upgrading from earlier version.I would have recommended a little lesson methodology (well-covered in their book on Version 1.x of Designer/2000)and a lot more on generation.Success with this tool normally isdetermined by the quality of the generated output of Designer. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Poor choice for experienced modelers - just ok for beginners
This book oversimplifies the examples and expects a leap of faith to truly understand the information engineering technique of data modeling.1-0 out of 5 stars Very academic in nature, more theory than reality
Anyone that has been modeling very long will see this book for what it is ... after you look at it once, you'll put it on your bookshelf and leave it there.Save yourself the money ... There are much better reference books available.Try David Hay's book on patterns, or Len Silverston, or Graeme Simsion.Check out the DAMA reference guide .. at least it's built by actual practitioners.1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading or, if you want, wrong
The authors deny the fifth normal form and state special-case rules as if they were universal. Examples: Eliminate triads; Two entities cannot have more than one relationship. Although in some specific situations the advice might be valid, anyone who is trying to learn from the reading will be misled. Less harmful, even interesting, for a professor (to learn how not to approach the teaching of DB modeling).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars complexity clarified
An unusual volume where the most complex issues are presented with unusual clarity. The subject requres work but the material for understanding is there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Got some money to through out the window?
Absolutely the worst book I've purchased. If it weren't for my MCDBA exam, I'd burn this one in a hurry.I don't know what she was trying to do, maybe teach the exam, but you would be well advised that a firm background in VB.net is needed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Take the reviews advice
I bought this book despite it's bad reviews and I must say that I am sorry I did. This book is very poorly written. I got only to chapter 3 and the examples have led me to debug to get them to work. Example, chapter 3 asks you to connect to an Access database (OleDB) with a SQL Object! No, no. It also in the same chapter references a view in the PROVIDED Access database off the disk named OrderTotals thats not even there!

5-0 out of 5 stars Several Common Apps Working and Described
There are a handfull of applications that every web designer sooner or later has to implement. Of course a skilled web programmer can do any of these applications. All it takes is time, thinking about the problem, writing, debugging, checking out, and making the customer (who may be the programmer him/her self) happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Good
Seriously if you want to start building a database in minutes, a good one, this is the book.Got it 2 days ago and am really covering a lot in the book.Very easy to understand and am building my own database right now.Whoever wrote this book I say thanks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dummies book makes you feel like one
There was a lot of theory, but not all that much instruction that could be applied outside this book's carefully designed examples. With the increasing popularity, I spend quite a bit of time flipping through it, trying to give it a chance. As a computer instructor, I wouldn't suggest it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to DB programming on VB6
I found this book very useful on my VB projects for school but It could be better. So, if you are new to Database programming this is a good starting point. ... Read more
