5-0 out of 5 stars Very pedagogical
If you are a beginner this book will make you understand the subject in an efficient and very pedagogical way. It's so pedagogical that I could get to grips with JSP just by reading it with no need to try the examples to figure out what's happening.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
This book on Servlets and JSP is truly a self explanatory tutorial for those who wish to get some hands on by themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Little bit old, but good book
I agree with other reviewers that this is a good book. There is even a crash HTML course in it. Examples are simple and easy to understand but good enough to help you create simple web site. At the end of the book there is music store web site that is more complex... I hope that they'll print updated version... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Original, useful and fun
IDEF1X is by far the most used DB modeling language today. Books and papers, however, rarely approach it. Bruce's book is a fine piece of work. Excellent on the details of modeling - for instance, his discussion on the adoption of surrogate (artificial) keys is enlightening. Even the less technical stuff is excellent (the text on the ANSI-SPARC architecture is the best I ever read). Great book for someone who wants to develop modeling expertise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Money & time well spent.
This book is the best-written database design book I have come across. It should be part of every database designer and application developer's library. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Database Text
Whether or not you support or practice IDEF 1X as your data modellingreligion (after all, it WAS developed for the military), Tom Bruce's 1991edition can increase the effectiveness of your data modelling by giving youthe opportunity to examine your beliefs and standards. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good For Additional Practice
I've recently finished building all the examples in this book from scratch, using both EditPlus and VS.NET2K3 on my workstation, and storing and testing the apps on my Win2K3/SQL2K server. Once I got the security settings and connection strings figured out, I was able to get all the examples to run properly.
2-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag
My guess is that the reviewers who gave this text five stars did not actually attempt to reproduce working versions of all the examples. The quality of this book is mixed, as is common for the multiple-author Wrox editions. Some of the chapters are exceptional, and deserve five stars, having clear and logical instruction as well as examples that work as described.Chapters 5 and 6 are examples of the best authoring, and it appears that the author with last name Ferracchiati has written some of the best chapters in the book.Other chapters are nightmarish excursions through incomplete and poorly explained code, with examples that don't work, and with files missing in the downloaded code.Examples of such chapters are 7, 9 and 10, with chapter 10 being so incredibly bad that it has permanently soured my outlook toward this text.To summarize - there is some useful information in the book, but don't pay more than a few dollars for it, and don't buy it if your own time is worth more than a few dollars per hour.

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating Experience
I've been reading some of the other reviews on this page, and I can't believe they are reading the same book.I have had problems running the code in several of these exercises, particularly with any code that has the DataGrid control.I've also noticed I'm not the only with this problem, since I have browsed the Wrox website forums and found others who were having the same problems with the code.I even submitted code from Chapter 3, page 67 to Microsoft Support, after receiving nothing but a blank page when I ran it.Microsoft noticed that the code was MISSING a required clause! The exercise in question is the FIRST exercise in the book.If the first exercise you attempt fails even though you made no typos, it's frustrating.I can easily see a novice programmer getting discouraged and giving up.I'm an experienced ASP programmer and even I was getting fed up!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book for ADO
this is a very good book, comparing to MSDN ADO note on the web, which covers only access to .mdb database, this book covers a variety of methods and databases. Thank for the great contribution.

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual Basic ADO Book
This is a well written book for existing programmers who want to learn ADO. While the examples are in Visual Basic, the core concepts of ADO are very detailed and anyone with an understanding of a similar language, such as ASP or C++ should have no trouble applying the examples to the other language. It will not help you if you don't already know how to program.5-0 out of 5 stars Its all here.
You can't get a more complete ADO book.. ever gritty detail is in this book.. It's almost too much information.:- ) if you code ADO.This is a good book to have. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars concentrate on making a good design
Manning gives you a good exposition of the important ideas in putting together a database. The theory of relational databases is explained in enough detail that you should be able to apply this to your situation. Laying out whichever tables you need, in a judicious fashion, can take some skill. But by moving your data around, you should be able to find a suitable configuration of several tables, and the appropriate keys and foreign keys to connect these together.

5-0 out of 5 stars A long time Oracle and Mysql programmer learns the basics of ADO.NET
--A Concise Reference with only the useful information. ADO.NET really does take a different approach from the other database API's. I have worked alot with JDBC, MySql (via java and PHP), Oracle and ODBC. In ADO.NET, the concept of a disconnected Dataset forces you to rely heavily upon Microsoft's Object model. The alternative to this book seemed to be either: Search through MSDN's reference material Or Purchase one of the many books which regurgitate the steps in using the wizards. The MSDN reference material really did not show me the expected "idioms" or paradigms in writing function db applications. This book helped me to understand what is really happening beneath these opaque designs. It helped me to understand and solve some of the necessities in creating data driven ASP.NET DB applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft MVP 2005 - Visual C# loves this one
I own over 50 books on .NET including several on ADO.NET.This book is my favorite on ADO.NET.Thus, it is the one I use most often. It has a great blend of discussion, documentation, and code samples. It is much easier and more thorough than much of the MSDN documentation or most other books.I've yet to run into a situation where the answer I need isn't either in this book or gives me a great starting point to find that answer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!
I've owned this book for 3 days and cannot put it down!I have not been a big fan of O'Reilly over the years, but this book is "incredible".It goes into the detail that most books seem to omit and it's those details that we "developers" desperately need.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT the MX 'bible'
I don't understand why this book has so many positive reviews. I have been a full-time coldfusion developer for 6 years. Our team of 4 coldfusion developers have the Ben Forta for CF 4.5 and this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars First CFMX reference I reach for...
...and usually the last.I've purchased a number of ColdFusion books in the past few years, and always loved the Mastering series for CF 4.5 and 5. When MX came out, I bought both Mastering and the Bible, but truthfully, I barely ever open the Mastering book. Everything I've ever needed to learn has been in the CFMX Bible.
5-0 out of 5 stars A No-Nonsense Approach to Mastering the Product:
Of all the things I COULD say in praise of this book, the single most important feature is that you can actually LEARN from it.The book presents a consistent style and presentation, and is thus an excellent learning tool. There is no "wasted space", discussing irrelevant subjects; no "beating around the bush" getting to the true meat. Here, you know the authors care about the material, and imparting it to YOU, in the most straight-forward way possible. It also is immediately apparent that the authors live in the "trenches" of daily professional experience with all of the product lines.....CF coding, databases, performance issues, product nuances, and the like. There is no substitute for this level of insight; here, you are gaining REAL-WORLD perspective that is SO hard to obtain otherwise.I will stop here, but you get the point....Mr. Churvis, et al, have produced a publication that honors the learning experience. If you want/need to move your web development knowledge UP several notches, this book is one of the best investments you can make. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not an introductory textbook
The book is intented to serve as an introductory textbook for undergraduate college students.I'll bet that half the class will drop the course before they finish Chapter Four, where the description of E-R diagrams is, at best, utterly confusing. In fact, the author consistently introduces terms and concepts that really have no place in an introductory course on database management. Not because they are not nice to learn, but because the neophyte will be unnecessarily intimidated. Great introductory textbooks make a subject seem less complicated than it actually is, not the other way around. If you already know something about the subject, buy the book because there is quite a bit of good stuff in it. If you are a novice, run the other way.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to understand book with lots of great info
I found this book incredibly helpful to understand databases. I think this book offeres a great way to learn a lot of great information about databases and web programming in an easy to understand fashion. After reading this book I can now build amazing web pages that are dynamically generated and integrated with databases. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars On the short list
Five stars.I recommend 3-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Guide to NOT SO CREATIVE HTML
When I was told that this book was going to be used for my technology class I was kind of excited because I am fairly familiar with the Lynda.com material. I had picked up her Learning Flash 5 CD-ROM and walked away with a feeling that it was money well spent, and that I had come away with a great deal of knowledge about Flash. Now keeping this in mind, when I picked up this title and read through it (mind you unlike some reviewers I read cover to cover), I did not feel like there was too much content that I could walk away with and use in any real world situtation. The techniques she used, produced very amateur-like pages that would not pass for a high school student's work. Mind you, for some of the fundamental HTML concepts the book was good, but for any real world stuff I felt like I was lookig at those pages where you know the person made it in Frontpage 98' without the plug-ins. Any of the cool stuff like the Javascript Rollovers was gone over so rushed and with so little detail, that it would have been better to have omitted it from the book. I am sorry this book just really was not worth the money.. I would look to that HTML Quickstart book over this one any day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Combination of Design and Code for Beginners
I like the idea of combining a designer and a developer to create an HTML book. The "family reunion" at the front of the book is banal and adds nothing to the book, but once by that, it's pretty smooth sailing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be confused with Rebecca's Riordan's
This is the best ADO.NET out there. Do not confuse this with Rebecca's (that would be a tragedy).
2-0 out of 5 stars Some good information, but too scattered to be useful
I like some parts of this book...I really do. But time and time again, when I need an example of how to do something, I have to go to many different sections to find the information.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the ADO novice but for those with a little hands on.
For approx. 1 year, I had been utilizing ADO.NET in a limited way. It confused me the switch from ADO to ADO.NET and I wasn't that strong on ADO to begin with, so I dug my feet in about learning the rest. Then one faithful day I hit a wall in my abilities with ADO.NET.The trusty READER wasn't going to bail me out and only VIEWING data in a DATAGRID wasn't going to cover my hiney either. They wanted to modify the data. They wanted to delete data. They wanted POWER....

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to get you up to speed
Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book on the condition that I would write a review of it.That said, what follows is my opinion.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on both MySQL and Perl.
There are plenty of books about MySQL and PHP in bookstores. Yet, I still prefer Perl as my web page languages, thanks to its powerful regex and the similarity to C grammar (Some functions have exactly the same name and take the same arguments as in C).

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavy duty -- in the best possible way!
This book is heavy in more ways than one. For one thing, it's a big thick, glossy tome that weighs a lot. However, the good news is that it's worth its wait in gold! Never have a seen such an accessible, comprehensive aid for getting things done with Dreamweaver. It's task and tool based, with every step illustrated in color. Makes it incredibly easy to do use just about every aspect of the product. You just look up the task or tool and voilla! Fortunately, it's accessibility doesn't limit its utility, so this book is also for experienced DW users. I'm amazed at the sophistication of the techniques, even though they're presented in a way that make them head-smacking easy. This just could be the best overall book on Dreamweaver yet. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Feeling alone in the arene of ORM
I am a proud owner of Visio for Enterprise Architects, the only case tool I own, and I've have also purchased and used T.Halpins text regarding the use if this tool. In this text, Terry goes thru great efforts to promote the use of object role modeling, ORM, in conceptual designs. I am somewhat sceptical about why there no other book or author using ORM in their explanations of conceptual designs. I whish I had $5k to purchase a copy of ERwin so I could be in the main stream.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be mislead
The book is like an ocean, poorly organised. No pictorial representations (which I think is very important when we discuss data modeling). I bought this book to refresh my data modeling knowledge-- disappointing. May be useful for some students to clear some papers, for pros - please find something else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Award winning
The most in-depth explanation of ORM available today.Read more

Editorial Review

The PHP server-side scripting language and the MySQL database management system (DBMS) make a potent pair. Both are open-source products--free of charge for most purposes--remarkably strong, and capable of handling all but the most enormous transaction loads. Both are supported by large, skilled, and enthusiastic communities of architects, programmers, and designers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All their examples work!
Excellent book. All their examples work and they describe the differences that can be encountered in different recent versions of PHP. Pretty much all you need is here, and the whole book comes on the CD so you can take it with you when you are travelling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read and Reference
For beginners this book is very worthwhile. I bought 2 "PHP and MySQL" books from Amazon and I haven't even opened the other book. Whenever I need code examples or a reference this book provides me with the answers.
4-0 out of 5 stars helpful to get up to speed on php
a lot of this ends up being skippable but if you're looking to get started with php, this tutorial/reference type approach is pretty helpful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars HTML & XHTML
This is a good book for moderate to experienced computer users with programming experience. The code snipets are helpful to illustrate the topic, but a less experienced person could easily get confused.

5-0 out of 5 stars HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide, Fifth Edition
I am getting ready to build my own website and this book has helped immensely and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book to introduce them to the language of HTML.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start
I first read this years ago when I was first learning HTML and had no developement experience. It was a great way to start off, easy reading and easy to look up information I needed.I still look things up when I need a quick refresher for a web page alteration. Not the book for someone looking for advanced knowledge. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tips and Tricks with ADO.NET unrevealed
The book explains the ADO.Net concept completely, with examples and also explains the advanced features that would other wise have been difficult to be brought in practice. While designing and developming an ASP.Net application, ADO.net plays vital role.
5-0 out of 5 stars A real good one
I have read this book completely. If you are looking to develop your skills in ADO.Net or not feeling confident about your noesis you must have read this book. Once you finishedit gives a huges amount of confidence in you. It doesn't cover each and every aspect of ADO.Net but it explains the various essential concepts behind ADO.Net in a clear way by dividing it into topics and more importantly it doesn't miss anything and it is a must have book for reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Example focused book.
This is the indepth example book I have seen for using ADO.NET for getting connected to databases. The examples in the book are just great and will give you a complete view of what goes on with database applications. Starting with the fundamentals of ADO.NET, walks through the basic principals of the new object model, and what you can do with the object model.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough information
You would be better off buying a book about a specific Macromedia application rather than trying to save money with this "all-in-one". There is simply not enough information in order to explain the concepts well enough. This book explains something once and then goes on to the next topic.I would compare it more to the Help section than a tutorial.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful; Maybe a Bit Too Much for Dummies
Macromedia Studio MX All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is definately a value-packed, thick, useful book. There is good reference material and getting-started info on Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, Freehand 10, Macromedia Vlash MX, & Cold Fusion MX along with two sections on design basics and integration of studio components.5-0 out of 5 stars 7 books in 1
I just bought Macromedia Studio MX 2004. Yet, all I got was a CD and a good luck. Well I could root around trying to use the product, get a book with insight on how to handle the product efficiently. There are many good books on each item in the Studio. If you buy them individually the price is almost seven times the price of this book. Then you have to compare and contrast to integrate the information.Read more
