1-0 out of 5 stars Miserable Book
I have to agree with the negative reviews so far. This book is a nightmare!I'm currently using this book for class.4-0 out of 5 stars Serves its purpose
In response to some negative reviews, I think some are missing the point of why this book was written. This book's goal is not to teach you how to totally design and program a database from scratch. Its purpose is to familiarize readers with the various methods of designing and interacting with databases. The coverage of SQL is well done.Yes, there is more to it than what the book covers, but most of those details vary from DBMS to DBMS.Also, the ER diagram is covered well, although I would have appreciated a few more problems and examples that give the student practice in constructing a diagram from scratch. The much-maligned SOM was for me a good alternative perspective.Maybe it isn't used as much in industry, so what?It still helps the introductory student grasp the underlying concepts and think outside of the box.The later chapters are not extensive in their coverage of xml, asp, and the like but they don't have to be.Remember, this is NOT a book about any specific language.Professors have the freedom to delve into areas that they think are more important in more detail. It is a fine companion to professor lectures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid -do NOT use book as reference do NOT use in a class!
A huge re-write is needed, the author overpowers the basics of modeling and industry used methodology with his semantic object ramblings. The author contradicts himself in several chapters, which are bloated with useless words and ridden with mistakes. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to DV, but overpriced
This is a great book for the college student, co-op/intern, or any engineer or manager new to the field of DV (Design Verification). I could easily see a college course being built around this book. Although the seasoned verification engineer may not find much in the way of new information in this book, it may provide insite into why others in your team, group, company, or industry don't quite do things the same way you would. One of the greatest dangers in this, as in any field, is zealotry (bordering on facism) for a particular verification methodology above all others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to ASIC/SoC functional verification
Meyer's book starts with basic concepts of functional verification and gradually introduces you to more advanced topics such as constrained random testing and hardware/software co-simulation techniques. This is a very good book for design engineers and project managers who would like to quickly get up-to-speed on ASIC/SoC functional verification concepts and advanced techniques. For experienced ASIC/SoC verification engineers, this is a good book to refresh your memory on the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read for Advanced Verification engineers
Meyer jumps to the heart of advanced verification issues.I have 12 years experience in functional verification and this book provides good information about all the advanced verification topics haunting designers of SoCs today, like, verification reuse, coverage, assertions, testbench development, etc.We bought one for everyone in our group. ... I recently purchased BEA WebLogic 7 Server Administration as a companion book to "BEA Weblogic Server Bible".The Bible is excellent and highly recommended, but it was done a big disservice by bundling it with the Server Administration book. 1-0 out of 5 stars Very little insight ......

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Coldfusion book for Beginners or Pros
This book seems to bring a whole new perspective on Coldfusion.I have been programming CF for approximately 2-3 years, and this just opened up more doors of CF functionality. For example it displays one of the best "homegrown" login examples I have ever seen. It also really goes into great detail on more advanced topics that other books seems to skate around.Once again, an incredible book for beginners and pros!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Excell Adv. technical content, not instructional or complete
Overall the better of the dozen or more books on coldfusion mx in terms of development-quality reference material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening Book!
Forta's book is very interesting.I almost bought a book solely on SQL, but just bought this book because of its comprehensive SQL sections. As an Application Server Developer, I also have experience with ASP, and thismakes ASP look extremely primitive. In fact, I used the concepts of ColdFusion presented here to evaluate better solutions for projects in ASP.An example of this is the easy implementation of Dynamic SQL in Coldfusion. I then built a Dynamic SQL implementation. Thanks Mr. Forta for a greatone. If you know ASP, this book will show you what you need to engineerwithin ASP to get it to compete with Cold Fusion. An awesome book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book. Even for beginners.
I have very little programming experience and have this book to be very easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone wanting to learn Visual Basic
I'm an IT engineer and was wanting to get stronger in scripting and code writing and heard this book was pretty good. Many other Microsoft or other company books are extremely dry reading where this was great.Whether you're a computer person or not, it's easy to follow, well structured, and has some amusing jokes.Learning VB.Net was much easier than I thought.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm an idiot... and this is garbage!
This is the worst book I have ever read. It' s like reading a book on how to use a light switch over and over again even though you've already done it 1000 times.Does that make sense?Either way, I'm drunk and this book sucked and I still can't program. What a waste.Good lord.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I took a job without knowing any VB or Basic computer programming skills and this book helped me to understand and understand the programing language at a beginner level and propellme forward.Within four days I was creating my own VB program and had a good understanding as to how to get around the application and all it's power.I highly recommend this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intermediate Book for VB.NET
This book is well written, thorough, and concise.I want to emphasize that this book is very concise; this is the reason that I loved it so much. This book minimizes redunancy and fillers. As a result, I was able to acquire approx. 2-3 times the information per page as compared to a typical programming book.If you have a moderate understanding of programming (or are at least a novice with a talent for this type of thing), then this book will give you a firm grasp on the fundamentals of VB.NET.In addition, you'll learn enough about various .NET topics to know whether more detailed studies of those topics would benefit your goals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on top
This is the best overall book about a proramming language that I have ever owned. From the Turbo Pascal v2 to all of the .net programming languages, this one takes the cake. Plainly written, and full of excellent examples, this is one that will stay on my desk for a long time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the money
Visual Basic is a huge subject, and most books that cover it carry a price tag of $40+. This book has chapters from other books and so, as a reprint, it was produced a lot more cheaply. It is not a book for beginners, but it is a decent reference. It has a lot of examples -- and this is the best way to go about using a programming language, anyway.

I purchased Web Connection from west-wind.com and was very excited about the possibilities, however I knew very little about how the web worked, and I made many mistakes.5-0 out of 5 stars Up and Running In the First 4 Chapters!
This book is extremely timely for me. I have a WC web site for my business, and the SSL appendix alone is worth the price of the book. I really liked how the entire development process was summarized in the first 4 chapters so developers can get an immediate sense of accomplishment before they get into the details in the later chapters.5-0 out of 5 stars How To Write A Good Technical Book: Get WebRad

5-0 out of 5 stars Database Development For Dummies Review
This book has a wealth of information. The author does a great job at passing his knowledge on to the reader. You'll learn even more than you expected.

1-0 out of 5 stars Use "Database Design for Mere Mortals" Instead
This is the first of the "dummies" books that I've used, and probably the last. The author introduces a lot of jargon and complicated models early on and then proceeds to use terms interchangably, leave models abstract that would have benefited from metaphors, and produces examples that he fails to adequately explain. When things become complicated, he demures, reminding the reader that this is, after all, only an introduction.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Design ideas and scenarios
This book provides a good introduction of steps and principles in designing geodatabases and the importance of information products and identifying thematic layers. The book presents 7 complex models: streams and river networks, census units and boundaries, addresses and locations, parcels and cadastre, surveying federal lands, using raster data, cartography and the base map.For each model they present the features, feature data sets, relationships, and topology rules. Readers working in these 7 areas will probably gain most from the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars mindshare is being sold here, not the book
The subject is considerably more specialised that designing a relational data base. The book is part of ESRI's ongoing way to publicise geodatabases, and hence ultimately drive demand for their products. So keep in mind that what is really being sold here is not the book but mindshare. Yours.

I belive that with this book, it cannot be made any simpler!! Even for non IT minded persons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emphasize the Problem Solving Method and Programming Style
As an instructor of this course, I enjoyed stressing to my students that they must develop their problem-solving skills and programming style.
3-0 out of 5 stars Works well when accompanied by a talented instructor
This book was required for a C++ course I attended at the local community college.I had been doing some minor programming in other languages but felt I needed at solid foundation in C++.This book would have been a difficult place to start. However, thanks to a talented and very patient instructor, the entire class did well.I would have given at least a four star rating but this Addison/Wesley paperback was very poorly published.Pages fell out daily throughout the semester.Have some tape and glue handy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner / Advanced
This book was required for thefirst semester programming class. Now I was able to understand 'cause I was in CS and had been programming for 10 years. But the history majors in my class were crying cause this book couldn't really explain the basic concepts. many of the intro to programming classes are core classes in Univs in US. So, a guy who's in CS, I assume wouldn't have any problem cause it's way too low level for him. Whereas those who really need this book..Art majors, or those who want to learn what programming in C++ is..will have a tough time..Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite a valuable read!
That which i found very useful about this book, was the ability it bestows on one to take/translate an abstract, ordinary typical user sentence like: "we don't want customer orders to be bookable to our website and thereby representing for us a negative quantity value against our stock inventory,if the quantity we have left in stock for the item is actually zero"
2-0 out of 5 stars Lots and Lots of Fluff, Needs Editor
This is possibly the worst written technical book I've ever read.I'd REALLY like my money back.Powell repeats some things over and over and over again.Sometimes, he re-phrases the same concept 3 or more times in the very same paragraph.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really like this book....
I'm only about a 1/4 through this book and I have to say I've learned a lot of valuable information. It's an easy read and it's not as time consuming because it's not taking you through every minute detail peice by peice. She's giving you real-life information that is useful in making a basic beginners website.Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic Except Where I Needed the Basics
This book contains a number of tricks and tips to make a more animated and inviting web site. Adoption of the techniques described will definitely lead to a more professional appearance of the finished product. In that respect, it is quite a useful volume, especially for a neophyte like myself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for adding special features...
This book is really great if you'd like to add a few special features like photo albums, pop-up frames, etc.It explains how to configure them in plain english, and gives examples to practice. You can jump to any chapter immediately to get the info you need without having to spend time reading the entire book. Definitely worth the money! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick solutions that work the first time!
Dreamweaver and ColdFusion are both terrific Macromedia products, so using Dreamweaver MX to develop ColdFusion applications seems logical to me.However, this is the only book I've seen that actually shows how to do simple projects that work the first time. Most importantly, Sue Hove (like most Visual QuickPro Guides) doesn't leave out steps or fail to explain what's going on with the process. I've written some CF projects from scratch and they work just as well as her examples, but I liked using this book to generate CF code from DWMX that I could use to study and learn. My copy is already dog-eared. I only regret that I have one copy and I'm always leaving it at work when I want it at home, and visa versa.

4-0 out of 5 stars New to ColdFusion
I'm new to ColdFusion and am a hard person to teach.I don't do well after just reading a book.I needed a more tutorial or hands-on based book to walk me through and allow me to actually do it.I'm on chapter 6 so far and with the exception of some serious problems with the steps on page 51 (Ben Forta has an errata on his website for this page) its been great.I can usually tell if I am going to get anything out of a book or not after the first few pages or a chapter.Which is why I bought this book about a week after buying ColdFusion MX with Dreamweaver MX by David Green. Not sure why people say in some reviews that there is "too much talk" in these books, I need all the information I can get and this book seems to provide it in a way that even I can understand..and let me tell you thats saying a lot.Hope you have as good of an experience as I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sue Hove is great!!
I bought this book last week. I was kind of expecting another "demo jockey" visual quickstart book.Instead of showing you what each menu item does...this book takes you through a more tutorial based learning experience.I have found this book to be extremely helpful.I am not a programmer, and frankly have little desire to be one. This book shows you Dreamweavers object oriented approach to creating coldfusion apps through Dreamweavers codegen functionality.I have been corresponding with the author (Sue Hove) and she has informed me that there are really no changes from DreamweaverMX and Dreamweaver MX 2004's codegen functionality. So this is the book to get even if you are running MX 2004 and coldfusion mx 6.1. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Little in the way of examples
OK - I'm totally new to web design, and that is why I thought a 'Dummies' book would be an appropriate start (I am a seasoned programmer, though, so I didn't expect this to be especially difficult). I do have a very basic website up and running.
1-0 out of 5 stars Is there a worse book on MX?
I've bought dozens of books over the years for all Macromedia and Adobe products and this one is probably the worst. It's like a dictionary that doesn't have the word you're looking up but - sure enough - the word "chair" is in there.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book; A Little Too Much for Dummies
Macromedia Studio MX All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is definately a value-packed, thick, useful book. There is good reference material and getting-started info on Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, Freehand 10, Macromedia Vlash MX, & Cold Fusion MX along with two sections on design basics and integration of studio components.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good only at the basics
This book is good for walking you through the basics. It is weak at providing insights into the product.A section on trouble shooting would be helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book
I recommend this book because the author distinguishes multidimensional concepts and the OLAP tool.
4-0 out of 5 stars An okay starting book on Analysis Services
I recently bought this book and have read about 7 chapters. The book is useful to get hands-on experience on how the Analysis Manager works. How can you use it to make basic cubes, dimensions etc. Also, there is a couple of chapters on MDX and the MDX sample application that comes with Analysis Services. In general I found the book useful because it made me familiar with the UI of Analysis Manager, but reading the book was hard. True to its name "Step by Step" the book focuses on "How to do things" (like click here , click there, heres the screen shot you should expect to see) without explaining in ANY detail about why you are doing what you are doing. There is no gradual build-up of concepts. If a chapter says it will take you 2.5 hours to complete, it will take that much time because of the step-by-step nature. I personally find this approach hard to follow. I would have liked if the book devoted a few pages in the beginnign of the chapter explaining the concepts and then went on to show you how to do this with the analysis manager. ... Read more
