5-0 out of 5 stars It is an excellent DBA Handbook
The book is excellent in the sense that it went straight to the essential and important topics. I am surprised that they did cover a lot of topic in a few pages. The book does help if you have some experience with oracle and especially with 10g. If you are new to oracle I am pretty sure you pick up the wrong book and you will be shaken by the concepts in the book. Overall I recommend this book if you are already familiar with 10g.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book. Not for Beginners
This book is definitely not for beginners. If you already have a working knowledge of how to operate an Oracle database, this book will provide a more solid foundation for your knowledge. I particularly found its chapters on RAC and High Availability helpful. The best part of this book is that it covers the most essential knowledge to becoming a highly competent Oracle DBA without trying to be a reference for every Oracle topic. I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bumpy Ride
I'm learning database administration for the first time, so I've been sequentially working through this book.I've made it past 200 pages running all of the commands and scripts; however, I've had to do a lot of outside research in the product documentation and internet forums to get the stuff to work.I've marked up the margins of this book like crazy.Key pieces of the examples are omitted, and some information is just plain wrong (e.g. names of AWR SQL scripts).Being forced to do outside research can help you learn the material better I guess, but the time could probably be better spent if all you want is your certification. One of their commands to move EM from SYSAUX to another tablespace totally corrupted my database console service and forced me to install a new database instance.Buy this book if you're into pain and self-torment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best PeopleSoft book for Oracle DBA who needs to learn PeopleSoft support
I have been an Oracle DBA for ten years and needed to ramp up very quickly recently for a large client to support their PeopleSoft environment without time to get training on PeopleSoft. This book fits the void left empty as the other PeopleSoft books are geared toward PeopleSoft application developers and not for an Oracle DBA who needs to understand the new ways of working with Oracle databases and PeopleSoft applications. Definitely a gold mine of nuggets for those who need to understand Peoplesoft on Oracle!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic, focused, detailed
This book is a deep in-depth view of the function of Peoplesoft on an Oracle database. Not only does it cover the fundamentals of how Peoplesoft uses the database features, it also details almost every table in the system on a row by row basis. An in-depth resource which is sure to be invaluable to anyone using this software configuration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Will do the job
This book will definitely teach you the new features in 10g and prepare you for the exam. The material definitely covered the test areas well, although often there are mistakes in the text and questions. The online tests and flashcards are very useful and (good or bad) provide additional information that the book does not cover.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Ticket
Today I passed the OCP upgrade exam with a 52/60 score and this book is principally responsible. I used the practice exams to find holes in my knowledge and revisited the text in those areas. By the way, the 10g Upgrade exam is a lot more work than the last two upgrade exams. Prepare to spend more time studying. I have only one criticism: the book has to much detail in some areas(the lesser new features like merge, model, etc.) and leaves a few things out of the big-new features. All in all, this test covers 92% of the material for the test. Aside from the upgrade exam, the text is also an excellent reference and learning book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for DBA 10g Upgrade Test
This book gives you a CD with one 20-question exam per chapter, plus two 52-question "bonus tests," plus a 25-question "assessment test," plus a 250-question set of "flashcards."This is enough to get you into good shape for the Oracle exam to upgrade your DBA certification.

1-0 out of 5 stars Raymond is too kind
I'm teaching two sections of a database administration course for which this textbook was selected. It's the worst textbook I think I've ever seen. The earlier edition, used with Oracle 9i, had all the problems Raymond noted, but at least it lined up with the Oracle release it described.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I am using this textbook for a class in DBA using Oracle 10g.The author does a horrble job explaining the concepts and seems to jump all over the place. The step by step procedures won't work. You are better off downloading the Oracle DB and Client from Oracle and using thier install instructions. The review questions at the end of each chapter so far are lame. There are typos in the text. Don't get me wrong, there is information in this text it is just a pain in the rear to get through. For example, I need a Client to communicate with the DB, the text doesn't really cover this aspect.I dread the rest of this course... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unprofessional style and lack of knowledge
The author definitely has an arrogant style of writing. The book just talks about one way of doing things without being open about other possible better ways of designing and implementing efficient techniques. Oracle features such as partitioning, materialized views, external tables are not done enough justice.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Recipe for Success
Allow me to bestow some well-deserved praise upon Bert Scalzo's terrific "Oracle DBA Guide to Data Warehousing and Star Schemas".A true gem - I won't go on another Oracle project without it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Loosely coupled - arrogant attitude
I am uninterested in the authors opinion on this and that. I do not need to be looked down upon because I made something that the author thinks is inappropriate or possibly ridiculous. What I am looking for in a profesional book is vision, possiblity, technique, option and positive experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is the only guide you need to pass the exam. It may not have the depth, but it covered the objectives well.
4-0 out of 5 stars 10g Certification
If you are planning on taking the Oracle 10g upgrade exam this is the book I used to take the test, and I passed.A few questions on the test on nowhere to be found in the book and that could be because they are new questions or something along those lines. The practice exams are ok and may be a bit easier than the questions on the exam.I looked at some other publishers for Oracle exams and I say Sybex are the ones I am most comfortable with.I purchased this book and scheduled the exam for 6 weeks out.If I would have failed I would have blamed the book :)
3-0 out of 5 stars Typos, contradictions and poorly worded questions.
I just finished passing the test. I admit this guide helped me study for the test. The guide was well organized and covered the topics in enough depth. The writing was good. However, the typos, mispellings, contradictions, poorly worded questions and just plain bad sample questions and examples were annoying. The sample tests provided by the book were okay, but had typos and problems too. The end of chapter tests had several problems: some questions were poorly phrased or the answers contradicted the main text of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a developer or database administrator? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Arup Nanda and Steven Feuerstein, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that allows you to take advantage of the PL/SQL-based functionality in the Oracle database that is the most critical for DBAs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Oracle DBAs
It's no surprise that learning Oracle is one of the most challenging things to do for any person that works in the IT field. This massive database application has a long and storied history, becoming one of the de facto standards for storing database on massive scales.A huge chunk of the web is stored on Oracle systems, and it's a system that keeps growing and expanding over time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for 10g DBA's
This book is a must have for DBA's!

1-0 out of 5 stars For me this book has been worthless
Bottom line, almost every time I have turned to this book for an answer it has totally let me down.Unfortunately I have had this book for several years and am just now getting around to writing my first review.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best investment I ever made!
I lied on my resume to get a particular DBA job and got it all because of this book and after a few months on the job and asking stupid questions (and almost giving mydelf away) I actually turned pro. This book has enough excellent material in it to get you into the job and to keep you in the job.5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for oracle new ones

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource
This is the type of book I was looking for when I entered the Oracle Apps DBA field 2 years ago.Anyone who has used MetaLink to find this information knows that, at times, it can be difficult to find all the information you need.Often, you have to read through multiple notes and combine pieces of information from each of them to find your answer.Phelps and Jackson have done an excellent job of bringing together much of the essential information an Apps DBA needs to perform his/her duties.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for many levels of Oracle Apps DBA's
There are relatively few books that have been published for DBA's that run the 11i Oracle Applications.Well, now we have a good one for our bookshelves...This book was an easy read and kept me engaged throughout the various topics.I especially appreciated the specific metalink note references within the chapters which allowed me to gather more detailed information straight from Oracle.DBA's that have been involved with the Oracle Apps for awhile will get a refresher to things they may have learned and forgotten over the years as well as getting a solid explanation of the newer features for 11i; while newer DBA's with get well written explanations of the componentry needed to run the Apps. This book can also be a great desk reference for those quick "... how does that work..." questions.I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about the Apps DBA job.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is as described....
I am the author and I want to comment on this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Reference Manual Replica
I hate being a critic of the Oracle Books but I believe constructive criticism is good for the Oracle Authors and they benefit the Oracle Community in the long run.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good desk side reference for busy DBAs
I too usually access Metalink documentation. However its nice to have this tome for looking up or reviewing syntax and how to get imporant tasks quickly done. Best quick reference guide for working DBAs that I have seen yet. Good complement to online support for real Oracle DBAs. I usually leave it at my desk at work or at home when I get paged at 2am and need to know how to resize a datafile or tablespace or recover a controfile at the wee hours and cant get Metalink to work. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Many errors in text
Palinski is full of errors, confusing and sometimes contradictory explanations. It seems to have been written by someone who is unfamiliar with Oracle, and just blindly compiled material from different sources.5-0 out of 5 stars Author of the book - realistic@radiks.net
The review by the reviewer from Lincoln does not pertain to this book. The book pertains to my book "Oracle Database Construction Kit" that was written in 1997 and is out of date even though the publisher continues to market it.At the time "Oracle Database" was published Forms Builder 4.5 was the current product and Oracle8 was just released.Oracle8i was still several years away.2-0 out of 5 stars OK, but lacking
There are only four pages on Oracle 8i. This book is written for the outdated Forms Designer 4.5. What a disappointment! The newer Oracle Forms Builder 6 is considerably different. Furthermore, the forms used in the exercises often will not compile, (because the author made the unfortunate choice of the PL/SQL-Forms reserved word "TOOLS" for one of the table names). You can drop the TOOLS table and create it with another name to make the examples work.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too basic to be really useful
The text is too basic to be a realy useful reference. If you've got any Oracle experience, you'll probably skim through most of the text.Sure, you'll pick up a pointer here and there--but that'd be the case with nearly any book.
1-0 out of 5 stars really bad
This book is horrible. For example, the section on imp and exp simply have a screen shot showing the output of "help=y". Great, thanks... I could have done that myself. How about going over some typical scenarios like backing up a tablespace and loading it to a test server?Want to see how full your tablespace is? You won't find anything about that in this book. Hmmm, maybe your archive logs are filling up your disk? Can you safely delete them? You won't find the answer here. There is a chapter on tuning the server. Why you'd put this in a "101" book is beyond me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for The Oracle Beginner
This is a good book for the oracle beginner. The concepts, unique to Oracle (from the perspective of a beginner or someone familiar with other database systems such as Microsoft SQL Server) have been plainly explained.Such explanation is not available in Oracle manuals or help files.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Good
The book is inadequate as a means to prepare for the OCA exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good
The author demonstrated lack of understanding of the topics covered, and no hands-on experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very confusing book
A very confusing book. It actually describes the Exam 1Z1-311 and not 1Z0-311 as it is stated here on Amazon.com. The 1Z1-311 exam is a beta exam and not available at Oracle any more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book! Especially for beginners to intermediate
This is a really good book. I finished the OCP track and after that I needed some knowledge of how Oracle works on Unix and this book did it for me. Everything is explained clearly and at a very basic level. One thing I needed to know was what does a DBA do in his/her daily activities and what is the work environment like for a DBA, who does he/she interact with? This provided the exact answers and much more. But it is really great from day-to-day duties of a DBA, typical scenarios, to backup scripts. Yes, I agree this would be a great book for a Jr. DBA, as I am. Eventhough it is old (8i), you can still benefit from it a lot if you're on 9i.
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!Could not ask for more!
After reading several books on Oracle, this one hits the topic on the nose. Please have a UNIX background but if you don't, it is still an excellent book. All basics are covered here to get you going on more advanced topics in Oracle.I really got a basic understanding of Oracle with this book and would highly recommend this to anyone trying to start out in Oracle.this was written for the common technical person who knows UNIX & computing technologies in general, but you will have a bigger advantage if you are a UNIX Admin.
