5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent documentation for PeopleSoft HRMS
It is truly a thorough documentation of every important part of PeopleSoft HRMS. It is a handy-dandy book for anybody working in HRMS. Thanks to the author for taking time and putting thoughts to write such a gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for quick start
I am a DBA and wanted to work on building a warehouse for PeopleSoft HRMS along with generating reports for the client. This book really helped me and my team to understand the hr/payroll concepts quickly. If you are a DBA/developer working in Peoplesoft environment, good to have this book in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure for technical and functional users
This book is a treasure for anyone who needs to get quickly up-to-speed on the PeopleSoft HRMS data architecture and the most common tables against which queries and reports are executed. This alone would make the book invaluable because of the confusing PeopleSoft documentation and the thousands of tables. However, the author goes well beyond by breaking down the most important tables, grouped by function, into attributes and explaining how to create highly useful business reports from them.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer to computer networks and its design
A comprehensive textbook for undergraduate/graduate students. The book is complete with basic coverage to different types of networks and their working.Treatment to TCP and other Internet protocols well explained with pseudo code for different algorithms.Various extensions to TCP and network security basics well covered. The book does lack some mathematical treatment to the subject which could have improved the content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Academic Studies.But...
I am studying this as part of my course.I have found this book teaches you from the base about Networking. It's really helpful in understanding the underlying technologies.Larry and Bruce have done a wonderful job in covering almost all of the aspects.But... I found only one thing lacking. That is...graphical explanations. This book is more of text with required graphics but in some places it took time to visualize the concept.I have had Behrouz A. Forozan's (I hope I have spelt the name correctly)"TCP/IP: The Complete Protocol Suite" along with this.Particularly I found some of the parts like ATM, Routing and other chapters' in this book textually gives us a thorough understanding and Forozan's book does depict that visually in a better way. Here is the bottomline, have this book as "The" texbook and have some other books like the as I mentioned before.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good general introduction, not an engineering textbook.
Although this book clarifies the concepts of networking quite good, it lacks in-depth mathematical & statistical theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Will do the job
This book will definitely teach you the new features in 10g and prepare you for the exam. The material definitely covered the test areas well, although often there are mistakes in the text and questions. The online tests and flashcards are very useful and (good or bad) provide additional information that the book does not cover.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Ticket
Today I passed the OCP upgrade exam with a 52/60 score and this book is principally responsible. I used the practice exams to find holes in my knowledge and revisited the text in those areas. By the way, the 10g Upgrade exam is a lot more work than the last two upgrade exams. Prepare to spend more time studying. I have only one criticism: the book has to much detail in some areas(the lesser new features like merge, model, etc.) and leaves a few things out of the big-new features. All in all, this test covers 92% of the material for the test. Aside from the upgrade exam, the text is also an excellent reference and learning book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for DBA 10g Upgrade Test
This book gives you a CD with one 20-question exam per chapter, plus two 52-question "bonus tests," plus a 25-question "assessment test," plus a 250-question set of "flashcards."This is enough to get you into good shape for the Oracle exam to upgrade your DBA certification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source Book
This book is great! It covers many aspects of Coldfusion Development which I had always wanted to know. Samples, Source Code and detailed explanations are excellent! A must have for any web developer interested in mastering their skill with Coldfusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best ColdFusion book out there...
I have gone through numerous ColdFusion books. I came across this book, Macromedia ColdFusion MX Web Application Construction Kit Fifth Edition, from a reference from a friend. So far into it, I have to say it is superb in the manner of which it is written, and is easily understandable. All terms, as well as common myths (such as the hits per page) are explained in detail broadening your knowledge in general of the Internet and its capabilities. Databasing and the basics are covered in the earlier chapters, followed by lead-ins to ColdFusion, and ColdFusion itself. If you're strongly interested in learning CF inside and out, you should also buy the bundle Amazon has with the Advanced Macromedia ColdFusion MX Application Development Third Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Experience Coldfusion MX

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks from a beginner
I bought a couple of books about Dreamweaver and I want to thank you for creating one that even a beginner could follow. The other books I bought were way over my head and I found myself lost before I even got started. I guess if I get more advanced I may appreciate some of the other books, but as someone who is new to Web design, I want to thank you for helping me get started. I couldn't have done it without you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Covers the Basics
Having only once created a webpage on FrontPage, I thought I was a bit ahead of the game. Still, I decided to look into a how-to book for dummies like myself.
2-0 out of 5 stars A rush job
The first 75% of the book deals with plain HTML, forms and other buttons and takes one from 0 to 5 on a scale to 1000.A lot of space wasted on mechanical clicking around the interface.Explain the menus and options and how to use them and don't need to walk through each one as if I've never seen a mouse. Now, if all you want in a web site is a bunch of words, links and pictures, all you need is MS Word and then Save as HTML.So, I imagine the fun part is when you have a database, to make the site smart... The database examples have missing steps and built in assumptions, no clue as to what could go wrong, etc.Needless to say, I spent many hours searching the net to fill the missing spaces left by this book.To my surprise, I found Macromedia's ONLINE UltraDev help a much better resource, with better explanations and a lot more graphics. Thanks Jannine, but no thanks! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Crystal Reports 10
This book has been an invaluable resource in creating and publishing reports with Crystal Reports 10. I've been able to give it to new designers to get them up to speed and also use it to look for answers to quick questions on new features. Overall, this is the most versatile book I've found on Crystal Reports 10.

2-0 out of 5 stars Complete but not for learners
This book delivers exactly what the title promises. It goes through Crystal Reports 10 screen by screen and feature by feature. It is well laid out and has lots of screen prints. There is way too much verbiage, at least for this reader.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good review -- lacks advanced depth
The text is one of the first available for Crystal Reports 10.It does a good job of covering all the basics. It even goes into some "intermediate" details in various sections. If you're new or fairly new to Crystal Reports, then the book will be a valuable reference to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite reference
I really like this book. it not only helps answer thing but makes suggestion and gives real world scenerios at end of a chapter. I use it mostly for a reference tool as chapters 1-11 pertain to CR XI report creation part, which is what I need refresh on the most. I do wish there was a good tool book that gave more on crystal syntax if anyone knows please email me, but this book helps get me thinking on the right track.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Reference - But Poorly Organized
This is a solid book and a worthwhile reference.Unfortunately, the content organization is somewhat confusing--and the sheer size of the book makes it fairly difficult to find what you're looking for.
3-0 out of 5 stars Did not answer my question.
I purchased this book with the hope of figuring out how to produce a table of contents. Since database publishing tools are no longer produced I was trying reproduce the effect in Crystal Reports. I have 18 years experience using the Oracle Reporting tools and know how to produce what I need, however Oracle will no longer be supporting it's report toolset. There is an article on the Business Objects knowledge base on how to do this but it is written for SQL Sever and not Oracle. I was hoping that this book would go into this real world situation, it does not. I have also gone to the book's web site and asked for help, but no reply after 2 weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars extensive AD reference, great guides
The reference information in this library is very useful and complete, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how much hands-on development information is provided as well. Since Microsoft's Active Directory is relatively new,I needed the combination of guides + reference to get up to speed with ADprogramming/scripting. This library provided both. The schema book, withits chapters on extending the schema and complete class/attribute listing, rounded out this reference as a must-have for people programming orscripting Active Directory. The AD glossary is a plus, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Need to get started with Spatial ? Get this book.
Excellent book. I have been using Oracle Spatial for years but found various useful insights in this book. It is well laid out, accessible and covers pretty much all the bases. Good examples and case studies. Tackles the thorny issues around spatial indexing as well as I have seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Lack of discounts aside, the book is a tremendous value. It's well-written, indexed, and edited and a pleasure to read. It's been great fun for me to work through the examples.I only have 2 significant complaints: (1) there were far too few diagrams (i.e., maps), particularly in chapter 7 where they would have helped greatly and (2) there should have been more discussion about mapping basics including map projections since this is a subject about which most DBA's and developers have little knowledge and an area where mistakes in storing, manipulating, and displaying geographic data are often made. I know there are cartography books dedicated to this sort of thing, but I suspect many Oracle users would not even know enough to bother with them.
1-0 out of 5 stars Good book, no discounts
First off this book seems to be excellent for the topic at hand. However I am giving it 1 star since the publisher has put a restriction on it that it can only sell for the full book price. Retailers are not allowed to sell this book for less than the publisher price of $69.99

5-0 out of 5 stars A Work of Genius
I have withdrawn my earlier review because I did not properly understand the importance of this book until the second reading. That is a difficult admission to make since my business is database performance tuning.
5-0 out of 5 stars The first real SQL Tuning method.
I have worked with Oracle databases and SQL tuning since 1987, and the reason I recommend Dan's book so highly to anyone working with SQL is that his method is the first real method I've seen in this field. There are many approaches out there, but they all fall into the Guess & Grimacing or Checklist categories. Dan's is a REAL method, and it works for all SQL-based databases. It's so far the only SQL tuning book I can recommend. Any DBA, developer and troubleshooter working with database-centric systems should know this stuff.

Editorial Review

Microsoft Access has the steepest learning curve of all the Microsoft Office applications. Its basic functions aren't really intuitive, and users typically need to do some programming as part of their first Access project. For those reasons, Access is the Office application for which Office users--even experienced, highly competent ones--tend to need help learning. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, excellent, complete book!
I'm a UNIX sys admin suddenly plunged into the world of Micro$oft Access without any prior knowledge of it.I'm supposed to make some improvements to a relatively sophisticated existing Access database. I love Alison Balter's book because it is extremely clear and is teaching me everything I need to know, yet without being so basic that it drives me up the wall.I'm working my way through her examples and exercises, and they're a great help in working on my "real" database. This book has everything I need to learn Access and be able to work on a complicated Access database.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Advanced Introduction
This text is nothing if not thorough. It covers virtually every aspect of using Microsoft Access 2003 and most of it is done in a clear and thorough manner. It does not only teach the use of the program, it teaches the use of relational databases and some of the theory behind them. Best of all, it teaches good habits which, when adhered to, cut down on problems later on down the line. It is an excellent text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Look no further for an Access 2003 book
Look no further for an Access 2003 book. I found the information to be invaluable and the writing style a pleasant read; which is often a rarity in technical books. Alison is to be commended for the quality of information in this book and her writing style. The book is a must by and addition to any Access developer's library. ... Read more

Less chest-thumping and many more real world examples would have made this a better book. "SQL Server 2000 The Complete Reference" is over 900 pages and packed with lots of ink, but it lacks relevance and many times left me confused because of its hollow attitude.3-0 out of 5 stars This book is not for some people
Since this book was titled as a complete reference, and it received great reviews here, I decided that I should dive right into SQL Server with this book at hand.Unfortunately, I found that this book is not enjoyable to read for those of us who's attension is hard to hold.I imagine that many others (especially those who have some knowledge of the topic) would get some use out of it, but I'm posting this review to warn beginners, and people with short attension spans that this is not the book to start with even if you have technical knowlegde in other areas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Introduction To Text Retrieval Systems
A wonderful feature of this book spans out practicality for various topics including compresion algorithms and theory, document and imaging system and information retrieval. On my personal interest, the authors highlight a vast list of not only the theory but present it in a simple common sense logic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Information Retrieval
Managing Gigabytes is the best book out there on information retrieval. If you're interested in implementing your own IR system, there's nothing available that comes close to this book. But the book is good not just because it's the only one out there: the writing is excellent, the algorithms are presented clearly and explained well, and the coverage is thorough.Additionally, the coverage of compression algorithms is the best I've found in any book. All algorithms and pseudo-code in the book are presented clearly enough such that any competent programmer should be able to implement them.If all else fails, however, the free downloadable source code for the mg system can fill in any gaps.5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Thing Is: It's the Only One
This is the only book there is that will actually teach you how to build an information retrieval system (aka search engine). It discusses all the algorithms and tradeoffs, and comes with free downloadable source code to experiment with. Some of the material is standard, but covered in more implementation detail here than anywhere else. Some of the material is novel: you won't find better coverage of compression unless you hand-assemble twenty research papers, and reverse-engineer them to figure out how they're implemented. But with "Managing Gigabytes", it's all here. (Although, after a particularly envigorating discussion of how to string together a bunch of techniques to compress their corpus and save a couple 100MB, I did a check and found you could buy 512MB of RAM for less than the cost of the book.Knowledge is Power, but sometimes a little cash is more powerful.)The only negative is that this book is not called "Managing Terabytes", as the first edition promised/threatened it might be.RAM and disk are cheap, but not that cheap, and for now terabytes (and sometimes petabytes) are managed only by NASA, Google, and a few others.I can't wait to see the third edition! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Needs technical review but has a ton of information.
I found the book extremely useful in getting me pointed in the right direction with Reporting Services. I used the book less as a technical reference and more as an overview of how Reporting Services works and what options are available for solving reporting problems in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
2-0 out of 5 stars A troubled work
Chapter 1 made several good points. Chapter 2 was more confusing in its presentation but I got something out of it. Chapter 3 began the hands-on so I installed the sample files and sample database contained on the accompanying CD-ROM -- only to find that I couldn't successfully install the database! The CD contains only the ".mdf" file for the sql database (no .ldf), not enough to "restore" or "attach"the database. Their script to install the DB also errored out. I was unable to locate any useful help or errata on the MsPress website. It looks like the authors spent a lot of time and effort developing the step-by-step examples so I'm quite disappointed that I can't proceed further into chapter 3. I'd recommend looking to the Microsoft SSAS tutorial instead of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm shocked
I am both shocked and surprised at how completely faulty this book is.I have the previous version of this book; Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Step by Step, and I don't remember it being this bad.Don't get me wrong, I know Reed Jacobson as I had met him at the SQL Server 2005 launch event, and I don't necessarily blame him for the poor standing.I do however blame Microsoft as there is no way they could have performed any sort of Technical Editorial on this book.If you do decide to buy it, watch out for the Writeback partitions exercise in Chapter 10.It blew up my Virtual Server.Twice. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Guided "stepping"
I'm only on page 78, and already I can tell that I'm going to enjoy and learn from this book. Not being familiar with Mr. Halvorson's work, I was a little leary when I noticed that this book was published by Microsoft Press. Dreading page after page of nearly non-human jargon and wording, I was most pleasantly surprised when I began my journey through the easy-to-read pages. If you can follow a recipe, you can learn from this book. Heck, even if you can't follow a recipe, you can still learn, as long as you're willing to do the exercises. Being a beginner in the programming field, I can heartily recommend Microsoft's and Mr. Halvorson's version of VB 6.0 training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent from begginer to intermediate
My programing background was in C++, Pascal, and Delphi, so when I got a new job and had to learn VB 6.0 I scrambled to find a book that could teach me the fundamentals.I can honestly say that after reading this book in two weeks I learned VB 6.0.Great book for developers who are beggining or just want to refresh their knowlegh in VB 6.0, a must have.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gives you branches, not even trees, let alone the forest
This book is very poorly written. It has a lot of technical details on three flavors of SQL implementation as well the SQL99 standard, but is totally light on general concepts. It tells you how to do something (but often in a convoluted way), but doesn't say why or for what purpose. There's also a lot of circular references which can drive the reader nuts.I do not like this book at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all-around book
If you want to *really* know SQL, this is the book.I've used this often when I had a really tricky data request.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for SQL, excellent reference
This book, with no doubt, is easy to understand. It provides extensive coverage of the query language with excellent examples.
3-0 out of 5 stars conversational vs programming concepts
The explanations are presented in conversational language. This made it difficult for me to understand some of the concepts. I had to "translate" the explanations into more precise and concise language based on concepts familiar to programmers before I could grasp the ideas with confidence (assuming my translations are correct).

2-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized
I purchased this book to brush up on SQL programming that I had done in my previous career. The book offers a CD with versions of databases two or tree revisions back, most of which can be obtained free online anyway. NO database creation scripts, nor sample data is offered on the CD or on the publisher's website. You have to HAND TYPE it all in yourself. Even the sample data in the back of the book is incorrect. After hand typing in all this information, I created the sample queries while reading along in the book. The result sets in the book have no logical order. If a SELECT statement does not include an ORDER BY clause, the result should be in primary key order (if the PK is included in the SELECT clause) Their results in the book are arbitrarily ordered, so comparing my results to theirs is very tedious, matching up each line to ensure I received the same result. I find this very bothersome to a text on relational databases, whose purpose is to put data in logical order. The text itself does handle relational database concepts and the use of SQL to retrieve and manipulate the data well, but the examples and lack of source code warrant the two stars. I would suggest looking elsewhere for a SQL book. ... Read more
