5-0 out of 5 stars Want to advance your DB2/SQL skills?A "MUST HAVE"!

Buy this book!!!Some computer books are written by computer geeks who know their technical stuff cold. They can't teach worth a darn, but they are deep technical wizards highly versed in techno-babble.The people who wrote the Murach series are NOT (let me repeat, the Murach folks are NOT) such people. It was the most amazing experience to have read this book, and to have the feeling that either Curtis Garvin or Anne Prince were looking directly over one's shoulder anticipating the various questions that inevitably arose. This book is incredibly well structured. It is written clearly, concisely, and with relevant in-depth examples. The authors take pains to ensure that they present their programming examples without (WITHOUT!!!) falling into the trap of disjointed techno-babble so common to such books.Again, you get more than your money's worth with this book.Buy it, and recommend it to anyone else who wants to learn or refresh their DB2/COBOL skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars DB2 for the COBOL Programmer
I started a new job and needed to learn DB2 in a hurry.I bought part 1 and part 2.I was coding in no time. But the best part is they make excellent reference books because they are laid out so well. These books are well worth the investment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me!
I used this book to deploy Oracle 10g Applications through Oracle Developer Suite 10g and JDeveloper 10g. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the chapter. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Programming experience to use this book just a decent understanding of programming logic. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle 10g Applications as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for the OracleDeveloper.
Great book.I've been waiting for this book to be release and I wasn't disappointed.Full of great information on how to put this great Oracle tool to work.Easy explanations and great examples will have you up and programming in no time. The authors real know their stuff.Great Job!If you use Oracle's application server, this book is a must have!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on 10AS with the web
This is a much-needed title and Chris Ostrowski has done an excellent job in covering all of the topical areas of 10gAS web development.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall resource but has some drawbacks
I decided that January 1, 2005 was a good time to start using Quickbooks Pro for my small business. I'd been using MYOB FirstEdge, but found it was rather limited in some areas. Whenever I think about starting to use new software, I browse around on Amazon for a good book on the package in question. This book stood out as probably a good resource and I was not far wrong. However, I have a couple of complaints. Firstly, the author's instructions on how to enter beginning balances is vague at best. Secondly, her discussion of complex issues such as how to set up Quickbooks for sales tax recording and reporting, is somewhat lacking. The book that came with the software actually does a better job at explaining Quickbooks' rather quirky method of sales tax accounting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Treatise on QuickBooks Pro 2004
Ms. Ivens writes clearly, properly, and intelligently on QuickBooks software. The screen shots are legible, unlike those in some other computer books. The index is detailed, and thus useful.I counted only two typos in the 572 pages.
2-0 out of 5 stars Help pages online - not a guide!
I agree with the guy who said it's not a guide. Don't buy if you are confused by Quickbooks interface and plan to learn how to use it properly from financial point of view. To get the guide, simply print out the help pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental Olap principles
I was impressed by the quality of this book; this is probably the most complete book on OLAP theory and is a fundamental reading for professionals involved in the design of olap systems. In most cases it gives all the details and information needed to master this technology. It also contains some practical examples that are very useful to see how the theory can be applied in the real world.4-0 out of 5 stars Good OLAP Methodology
OLAP is a somewhat arcane corner of the IT universe and this book is a good guide to it for information and business professionals. It covers the basics well and provides decent exaples to get you going.5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anybody involved in Olap design

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat 'em... then join 'em!
As an independent technical trainer, I must say that I was a little concerned after reading such positive reviews, then read one that was so contradictory.Since I was under the gun to provide some Crystal Training I thought that I'd give it a try.I've always considered myself one to not follow the crowd when it comes to teaching. However after reviewing an initial copy of this book and subsequently using it in the classroom, consider me converted! The courseware - and that's what it is, not a coffee table book - is exactly what FastPlanet said it would be.My students raved about the book and all of the hands-on-real-life-exercises.I enjoyed the fact that the class was cohesive and relatively simple to deploy. One of the things I found in the first copy I purchased was that FastPlanet offers all of the exercise results as free downloads from their website.Note to FastPlanet - you should mention that, it's important to the training community.I can now pursue other Crystal Reports training opportunities with confidence!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Training and Subsequent Reference Material
As a Systems Consultant and Educator for the past 21 years, with experience in Crystal Reports since version 1.0, I came upon Fastplanet's courseware for our Crystal Reports Training Courses. I do not need to tell you about the quality of their materials because I have the achievements of our students to prove it. Fastplanet's books are straight to the point, roll up your sleeves type materials which take you through the steps of becoming proficient at the use of Crystal Reports. Heavy on the practice side and with good coverage of the material. In short, you WILL learn Crystal with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
this book is amazing good. although lack of proofs, the application side of the book is immense. Toones of good real life examples and things are explained in a very clear and simple way. Very easy to understand and in great details.
5-0 out of 5 stars *Excellent* stats book for behavioral researchers
We used this as our primary textbook in a graduate psychology / consumer behavior research methods / data analyis class, and I found it to be an invaluable aid in statistical analysis. From simple measures such as z-scores, t-tests & f-tests, and chi-squares, to more in depth methods such as GLM, ANOVA, and regression, this book is clear and concise. While it can be slightly cursory at times as to the theoretical underpinnings underneath the data analysis methods being used, it is a very helpful book in understanding how to actually make the methods work, and more importantly, knowing which method to apply in which situation.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great info, bad pictures
This book seems to be really informative so far. We're in the midst of designing a 700 square foot data center and there are a lot of great tips and tricks we never would have thought of in there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Data Center Design Considerations
I am working on relocating a Data Center to a new building as part of a manufacturing environment. This book provided some valuable background information for selling why I needed things that aren't available in normal office environments.I was dealing with maintenance staff that has no experience with Data Centers and every penny I needed to spend on the increased power, HVAC and security requirements for the facility were a hard sell. This book helped me communicate those needs in a way they understood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to find information that is clearly presented
There is a large gap between IT data center operations and facilities management professionals. This book bridges that gap, at least on the IT side, by clearly explaining the issues and factors that need to be addressed for effective management of a data center that complies with local codes and regulations. Most IT professionals are unaware of the regulatory requirements with which a data center must comply - unless they've been shut down by a city inspector at which point the concept of reliability, availability and support becomes moot. This book provides a good education about this obscure topic, as well as everything else that a data center operations manager should know in order to do his or her job. This doesn't shift responsibilities away from facilities managers, but does give IT and facilities common ground and a shared understanding of each domains roles and responsibilities. Here's an example of why this is necessary:systems that need to be brought into production usually require platforms, storage and network connections. These consume power, environmental system capacity and require space, all of which are finite and all of which are governed by building, fire and safety codes. Many organizations order equipment first, then notify facilities, when the right way is to jointly plan and manage data center growth. This book provides the basis for doing this, and if followed by both IT and facilities, will ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations and proactive physical capacity management. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a Quick Introduction
This book makes for a well-written and relevant introduction for a beginner to DTS, which is what I was when I picked it up.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Book is Good but DTS is still full of bugs
The book is a good way for learning DTS.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too many "step by step"
I found the beggning chapters are good, but in the latter half, the number of steps became so many that it's painful to follow them. Chapter 7 has 70 pages of step-by-step and I found I am like a robot just going through the steps. (Well, I didn't do it until the end, I am not a robot).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides a solid overview of JDE
The book provides a great background for the JDE newcomer. The book has sections that are good for the executive sponsor and transitions into detail good for those actually integrating. While not something that would ensure a successful implementation, the book covers a significant number of key issues and risks that should help companies through the implementation process.

3-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable introductory textbook
I was frankly expecting more of this book. The author superficially covers the basics of the OneWorld software architecture and the very basic of navigation and usage.Being titled "Implementing", I was expecting to find real life information on hardware sizing, what to do and not to do to successfully implement the software. There was not much more than what you could find in J.D.Edwards documentation and available Knowledge Garden papers. Also, anybody who has worked with this software knows that there is still a lot to do to make it as reliable as marketing hype pretend it to be.One would expect some objectivity from a third party, as good as the software really is.Wise advices like waiting for implementing ESU and service pack, making sure you have the appropriate skills around to do an implementation are slipped away from the content. If you have not worked with OneWorld before, and are planning to learn and implement the software, this is an acceptable introductory textbook. However, if you are looking for more in-depth coverage of real life issues with this software, you will have to look some place else. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Crunch Time
When you are ready to take the bold step into algorithms, this book is a great second step. I say second step because I think it helps if you read "teach yourself algorithms in 21 days" before this book.4-0 out of 5 stars Good documentation of basic data structures
I purchased this book to refresh my memory on data structures with templates. It is well written in most spots and provides excellent examples. I would recommend this book to any intermediate c++ programmer who wishes to learn/relearn advanced data structures such as Linked Lists,Hash,QuickSort,etc....

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't review, the book never arrived!!
I'm still waiting for the book to get to my house. I bought it on February 17th. It's passed more than a month and the book hasn't arrived yet. It makes me mad.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Written, Comprehensive, the Reason I Now Use Firebird RDBMS
This book is very well crafted. It is organized and thorough. With this book, the Interbase 6.0 manuals (available free on-line in PDF) and the Firebird software, you can create and maintain high performance, industrial software for use in production in environments of any size.I can not reccommend this book highly enough. If you need a database for your next project, you owe it to yourself to try out Firebird SQL.Use Ms. Borrie's book as a guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!
When I was buying this book, I was afraid if it will be only a printed version of PDF docs. But the book is much more, then simple documentation. Helen Borrie is a professional, and an experienced developer, so she often writes about programmer's bad habits or the reasons why databases are so poorly designed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Serriously flawed
I found this book to be seriously flawed in the following ways:
3-0 out of 5 stars Some of the foundation is good, but with problematic gaps
I am a newbie to MySQL/PHP. Truly. Many reviews of the O'Reilly series clearly have extensive backgrounds in programming. I do not: I had a little HTML under my belt, that's it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for learning the basics
Learning PHP & MySQL is a detailed guide to building a database-driven web site. The authors do an excellent job of starting from the beginning, assuming no prior knowledge of either PHP or MySQL.In fact the only assumptions that the authors seem to make is that you have a very basic understanding of HTML.After working through the book and the detailed examples anyone should be able to write basic programs the meet common needs as well as create and interface with a MySQL database. Some of the programming areas covered in the book include decision making, working with arrays, using functions, database design fundamentals (missing in most books), getting PHP to talk to MySQL, modifying objects and data, and security. At the end of the book the reader ends up with a complete example application.

3-0 out of 5 stars It would be a MUCH better book with a different title
While this work may be "The Official Guide" it is a long way from complete or authoratative. It is much more of an overview than a guide. It is an excleent overview or enhancements book for readers with a technical background.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great TECHNICAL review of DB2 UDB V8
This is a great book for what I do. I needed to keep on top of the new features in DB2 -- though for the wrong reasons (we are an Oracle business partner), I def'ly got to see all the new features with deep technical explanations and even examples; pretty neat stuff from IBM I must say. I looked at the What's New Guide that was referenced in other comments before buying this book, hoping to save a buck. Too bad they don't have a review forum for that book, horrible. All marketing fluff. Don't bother trying to find it -- it will only make you mad. Buy this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Already covered in What's New Guide
I was disappointed in the depth of the material. I had already read the What's New manual and found much of that repeated here. ... Read more
