4-0 out of 5 stars A good and robust all-around book to SSIS
Even if you did not read some of Kirk's posts at his SQLJunkies Blog or articles at WinITpro you will realize that he knows the stuff he was writing about very well. It is a good book to keep around for your SQL Server support team, because it is kind of a reference and training style book at the same time.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
Overall the book is an excellent resource for information on SSIS.The book is laid out well, having seperate parts for describing the how tos and the reference catalog.I especially liked the way that the author identified the "key settings" for each task first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally valuable and detailed book
Having used DTS for many years, the transition to serious use of SSIS has

5-0 out of 5 stars My opinion
This book was written for anyone to read.I have read many Reference books and none of them are as easy to read as this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but not complete
I used this to supplement my study while working on OCP certification exams (Oracle 9i database). The book has good information but not everything you want to know about Oracle. Frankly, the books helps but it is not complete reference. It would not be a bad idea at all to own a copy of it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oracle is Oracle
The book speaks on most of the database issues that can come up when using Oracle. It is more of a Reference manual instead of going to each topic in detail. This can be useful when one wanted to quickly get the relevent information.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not so complete...
With a 1200+ page book, entitled "The Complete Reference", I would have expected much more information about proper configuration. Properly configuring Oracle (I'm running it on Unix) is no trivial matter and I found this book to be severely lacking. While it seems like a good reference to have (hence 3 / 5 stars), it looks like I'm going to have to look for other resources.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed--tries to cover too much
This sounded like a good book, judging by the reviews here, but being relatively new to the Oracle world, I haven't found this book terribly useful so far.Oracle's docs have been much more helpful and detailed. I was hoping for a book that shared the author's experience and tips and helped the reader make decisions, but this seems to be largely a command reference, covering many topics superficially. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It is an excellent DBA Handbook
The book is excellent in the sense that it went straight to the essential and important topics. I am surprised that they did cover a lot of topic in a few pages. The book does help if you have some experience with oracle and especially with 10g. If you are new to oracle I am pretty sure you pick up the wrong book and you will be shaken by the concepts in the book. Overall I recommend this book if you are already familiar with 10g.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book. Not for Beginners
This book is definitely not for beginners. If you already have a working knowledge of how to operate an Oracle database, this book will provide a more solid foundation for your knowledge. I particularly found its chapters on RAC and High Availability helpful. The best part of this book is that it covers the most essential knowledge to becoming a highly competent Oracle DBA without trying to be a reference for every Oracle topic. I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bumpy Ride
I'm learning database administration for the first time, so I've been sequentially working through this book.I've made it past 200 pages running all of the commands and scripts; however, I've had to do a lot of outside research in the product documentation and internet forums to get the stuff to work.I've marked up the margins of this book like crazy.Key pieces of the examples are omitted, and some information is just plain wrong (e.g. names of AWR SQL scripts).Being forced to do outside research can help you learn the material better I guess, but the time could probably be better spent if all you want is your certification. One of their commands to move EM from SYSAUX to another tablespace totally corrupted my database console service and forced me to install a new database instance.Buy this book if you're into pain and self-torment. ... Editorial Review

To the people who are accomplished in its use, Structured Query Language(SQL) is a highly capable, eminently flexible, even beautiful way of describingthe data that you want from a database, or the changes that you want to make toa database. For the rest of us, however, SQL is a first-class nuisance that wedo our best to avoid by relying on relatively user-friendly--but usually lesspowerful--tools. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mere mortals is a great source of information
I enjoyed this book as well as learned alot from it. I wouldn't say it's for a complete beginner but for those who have played with access or another database program. it's a wonderful resource to learn the ins and outs as well as some "theory" of queries. I will recommond this for others to read and will be getting the companion book.. databases for mere mortals.
4-0 out of 5 stars gradually build up to writing complex queries
SQL by now has acquired many elaborations in syntax. It can be a formidable barrier to a new user. But the authors explain well how to take a query, expressed in plain English, and arrive at an actual SQL query which will work. Hopefully, anyway!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on programming new features
This book is clearly written and I feel it does a good job of covering the major new features of SQL Server 2005 well enough so you can get up to speed quickly and save enough time versus puzzling things out using just the online materials that come with SQL Server 2005 to easily justify the purchase price and reading time.A number of people with expertise in various aspects of SQL Server collaborated on this book, and the value of the information in each area reflects the depth of expertise.
5-0 out of 5 stars great way to explore new features of sql server 2005 for professionals
i was looking forward for this title recently and i am happy to have read it finally. this title digs in deep in most of the subjects that i was not able to find out by myself with my sql server 2000 knowledge and helped me a lot while getting into the details of advanced olap and reporting services.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Well, I have been digging into Andrew and Stephen's latest work for a few days now and have been very happy with the results. This book is comprehensive and covers the gambit of topics, including some favorites of mine such as T-SQL, XML, CLR integration, Service Broker, Integration Services, Reporting Services, SMO, and OLAP. Sure, I may be a geek for saying this, but I am looking forward to reading it cover to cover. ... Read more

This is very helpful, if you want to learn how to design a performance efficient system. I have suggestion for the readers of this book, that they should read concept guide to get know how to use the SQL tunning tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference of db design
Another great Kyte's book which is for database designer to learn how to design and build high performance db application. The guidlines are useful and easily understood for one who have certain Oracle development experience. Intermediate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first taste of SQL
This book is perfect for teaching yourself SQL. Perhaps that's why the title is "Teach Yourself SQL". I had never worked with SQL before and was recommended this book by a coworker. The chapters are divided into lessons and each lesson is fairly short, focusing on specific ideas and phrases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful info and perspective of running Oracle's database on Linux
This is a well written book for anyone who wants to learn lots of useful Linux specific details and perspective about set up, administration, monitoring, and tuning Oracle 10g on Linux.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied with the contents
If you read the editorial review: It is stated that the book is about installing and configuring Oracle Database 10g on Linux. Yes, the author did explain clearly the process of installing and configuring the Oracle 10g on Linux. He also covered a few more topics such as HA (High Availability), Tuning SQL, RAC, Replication, Index and Partitioning ... but not in depth. But the coverage is acceptable and useful. Do buy this book and you will find it useful if you love Oracle DBMS running on LINUX platform.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to Oracle 10g for Linux

5-0 out of 5 stars Best PL/SQL book I have ever read
I have attempted to learn pl/sql for a few years now and have been unable to find a book that pulls it all together. This book gently introduces you to a topic and then then shows you how to apply it. The comical nature of the author also makes the book interesting and fun. I believe its a must read for anyone attempting to learning pl/sql.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I am using it in the context of a text book under one of the authors. My only complaint with the book is that some of the topics seems to be shallow in content (for example records in chapter 5). As a person just learning PL/SQL I rather like the fact that it covers many topics, and takes the time to show example after example with explanations. The organization seems to be fairly uniform. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn PL/SQL as it has helped me immensely. I have found the index to be rather lacking (hence the four stars).

4-0 out of 5 stars A couple of bad chapters, but good for 1Z0-147
I bought this book hoping it would help me pass the 1Z0-147 Oracle PL/SQL certification test, and it did.First the bad news: chapters five and six are horrible. The person that wrote these two chapters writes in the most pedantic way possible.Pages upon pages are filled with highly repetitive code, with each example followed by a detailed analysis of every statement!Compare this to the coding examples in other chapters, where statements of interest are highlighted and then followed by descriptions of their significance. If you want a laugh, check out page 225, where the author of chapter six says, "A problem with programming books is that concepts need to be illustrated with an economy of space."Wow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big...but it reads like a novel!
Great book and easy to read! Author explain theory in basicterms and then, he give scripts or examples of how it should work or be written at TSQL level. Index's book it's almost perfect; for being a 1400 pages book it is not difficult to find any topic on it.You will find a lot of nice SQL 2000 tuning tips which add an extra value to the book itself. Could be used as a MCDBA prep. book and of course, in your job or if you're into Databases Admin. and Design business.

I was suprised but the book is really good for both beginers as well as experts. I learned a lot from this book even thought I have been working with sql server for a long time.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best there is...ok so now i think Sams is better than Wrox...lol
Well I needed a crash course in SQL server management and some T-SQL.I attacked this book head-on. The book is very comprehensive and i am very amazed. very poorly laid out and confusing presaentation of both forms and reports.some fairly good detailed examples (if you can find them) but the overall presentation is chaotic.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great for forms, not so much for reports
This is a solid reference book for those doing primarily Forms development, but it lacks quite a little in the Reports department. If you're buying it for Reports development, as I did, you'll be disappointed.I have yet to find a very good Reports reference. That said, this is probably the best one out there. The book contains something like 70% - 30% Forms info to Reports info (and that may be a little generous). It does have a few good examples and is an easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best reference guide for designing your SQL Server database
This guide not only provides references on SQL Server syntax, but also contains a brief review of best practices with database design. Includes all normal forms with database normalization, indexing, and data integrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars BestIT Book I Ever Read
This book is an amazingly clear and concise book, especially for the "non-gurus" among us.The explanations of general topics like normalization, the history of markup languages (in the XML section) are so well written you could give them to management and even they would understand what you are doing (maybe that's not such a good idea).Full of tidbits like why transaction logs grow so much faster than data files.Nielson writes about SQL Server 2000 as used in the real world, not just as an interesting piece of technology.Bravo!I would give it 10 stars if I could.I leave nitpicking to the gurus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for reading and as a reference guide
Very complete and illustrating. I am happy to have it on my desktop. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not detailed enough- lacks implementation coverage
I agree with one other poster that this book attempts to cover all major HA features in Oracle in one small book. It is ok for a very high level overview hence the 1 star but falls flat for major details on the individual HA features. Instead my advice is to get The Oracle 9i RAC book from Rampant Press, Oracle Streams book and Oracle Data Guard book all from Rampant Press and read the Oracle concepts manuals for these HA features.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for intermediate DBA's
It is one of the few good books available in the market which covers RAC, DataGuard and Flashback features all in one.
2-0 out of 5 stars Just overview of Oracle HA technology
The writers like to subsitute the Oracle manual in OTN but make no difference . eg, I wanted to setup the Dataguard through EM10g Grid Control. In fact , the creation standby database wizard was filled of bugs and user can't make use of it till patching and huge manual works. It's no doubt that writers never tried on this features. The book is rather splotchy and winding. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of Oracle SQL
The content look deceptively simple. However upon further reading one finds that it covers many aspects or ORACLE SQL plus differences between ORACLE and ANSI standard.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive on basics but weak on advanced features
The book improves with each edition. The brief data modeling section is adequate but uses Information Engineering data models and should be updated to use UML. The treatment describing joins fails to adequately explain why you chose one over the other.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is Awesome!!
This book by Alice Rischert is one of the greatest Oracle SQL books ever written.I purchased the 1st edition of this book back in the day and it helped me pass the Oracle 8i OCP SQL exam. After reading the 1st edition, I was very much compelled to purchase the 3rd edition. The 3rd edition of the book is much better with all the errors from the previous versions corrected. This is the book they use for the students at Columbia University in New York. After you read this book and do all the exercises and test your thinking projects, you become a master of the subject. If you want to learn Oracle SQL, there is no greater learning tool than this book.Indeed, there is much time, effort, and loads of quality and research put into this book. The format of the book is reading and then hands-on labs which reinforce the topics you just read. After you read this book you should purchase the Oracle PL/SQL by Example third edition. It goes hand-in-hand with this book.AFterward, you'll know enough to go take the Oracle SQL and PL/SQL exam. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Oracle reference tool
I was part of the Oracle implementation team at our company, and I have found this book to be a useful tool for myself in the year since implementation as we continue to explore new functionalities. It is also a useful tool for the application users to learn how Oracle works. In fact, I not only purchased this book for myself, but I have purchased copies for several other people in the company.I refer to it all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent book
I own about 30 books about Access (all versions). This book tops all of them. If you are using Access 2000 or 2002(XP) and you like to know about SQL Server (2000), trust me this is it. Try to read it from begining to the end. It's written in english language (not technical slang) and it shows you some cool tricks even for those Access 97 users. Hope to see more books from these guys. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent Resource for SQL Server and Access
This book is well written and easy to follow. The explanations are written in clear language and instructions are written out step by step. The book is well organized which means it's easy to use it more as a reference book. But, it is such a pleasure to read, you want want to skip a single page. This book covers both very elemental aspects of SQL, but also has much to offer the more experienced user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best - is #1 in my top 3 books to "use".
I read a lot of books covering topics from Access, SQL Server, to VBA.This book covers all of the "required" Access topics. It covers them better than any other book I have ever seen.It then goes on to cover topics I have not seen in other books or classes. While reading the book you will catch yourself saying why have I never seen this before, or hey I can use this! It uses Jet, Transact & VBA. Do you want to build better applications, do you want to know more than the competition, do you want to be a better developer? If so, this book is a definite purchase.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This book is very good. I've had the book for a month now, and use it every day. It is good because it covers both SQL and PL/SQL, as well as all the latest Oracle 10g database features.
4-0 out of 5 stars Even better than the last edition
Like the previous version, this is even better written. For starters to PL/SQL I recommend PL/SQL 101 and this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only SQL and PL/SQL book I actually use
I have three SQL and PL/SQL books, but this one is the only one I actually _use_ on a daily basis. It's a great book because it acts as both a training guide and reference book.Read more
