There is a new edition to this series so I will not give this set an in-depth review. But I will tell you that I used this set as my core learning tools and that I am now an MCSE.4-0 out of 5 stars Good to learn the product.Insufficient for the test.
I took and passed my MCP (70-210), but I got the Exam Cram to go with it. This book helped my learn the product, but was sorely lacking in the test area.3-0 out of 5 stars Dull books that just rehash training material
I bought these books to help supplement the material I learned in the Windows 2000 classes I took at my nearby Microsoft training center.I was hoping to find new and revealing information on Windows 2000 in these books since they came from Microsoft Press, but instead it was just a rehash of the training material. The classes were much better.I suppose these books are okay if you can't take classes, but it is much harder to focus on material that is not very interesting if you won't have someone that can explain and clarify the fuzzy parts like we had in the class.I learned a lot more from Mark Minasi's Mastering Windows 2000 Server than from the self-paced training books that I read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great depth of content, easy reading, not overboard but everything you need!
The best SQL book I've found so far. This is really just an update of "The Practical SQL Handbook" and that's a good thing. These authors do a marvelous job of explaining how to accomplish things with SQL without getting too deep. The writing is at a conversational level ... like you are speaking with a co-worker.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, explains differences when necessary.
Does a good job of explaining SQL from the basic stuff up to highly complex queries. Goes into detail whenever necessary to explain the differences between an implementation in Oracle, SQL Server, mySQL, etc. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than the impractical SQL Handbook
This book was very helpful and clearly written. The chapters, while somewhat lengthy, cover the information slowly and in-depth.Computer geeks like myself can pick up this book and get a solid background in SQL without a class or instruction (though this is a textbook for some local classes).

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective where it counts
I have not come across the errors in this book that some other reviewers have talked about and the code I wrote using info from this book works. My only bad words about this book are that the sections were not really ordered in with any logic, and were not very long. This was Ok though because they give enough information and coresponding well explained code examples to get the job done.I thought I was in trouble because the first half of the book didnt talk about using java and mysql on a web page but half way through they talked about servlets. With this book you can code a three tier web application that runs a store driven from your mySQL DB or you can write stand alone apps with mySQL functionality. In short this book is effective where it counts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for JDBC beginners
I have bought this book because I had expected to find there some more advanced hints and tricks, especially about performance tuning and bottlenecks of Java and MySQL applications. Unfortunatelly, this book only covers the very basic problematics. It is a good kickstart for beginners, but only for them. Experienced developers should pick a general J2EE book instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I haven't found the errors that other reviewers have mentioned(that's not to say they're not there, but they weren't an issue to me). However, I have found this to be one of the most useful technical books I have ever used.I knew nothing about mySQL configuration and a passing bit of experience with JDBC and this book helped me setup an enterprise-used database that is very well designed and works like a charm.I have a TomCat servlet server running and used this developer's guide religiously. It is actually interesting to read, not only as a reference.Of course, I'm interested in this topic, so I'm a little biased, but I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to use this EXCELLENT, free DBMS and write powerful apps using Java. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not Sufficient
This book gives you alot of facts to remember and no examples to use.The test was all configuration and security scenario questions and alot of stuff in the book was hardly covered like backup and recovery, DTS, BCP, DBCC statements, replication, maybe one question each on these. No questions at all on steps to take during installation and configuration.I will be looking for something to supplement this with..

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
I read the entire book in 2 days... there is nothing in the book to actually remember... No concepts are described... all you see in this book are the screen shots of Enterprise Manager...
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing...
No, no, no..This book is a waste of time.It gives an IN DEPTH step by step, excrutiatingly detailed how-to examples on using the installation wizard, and then glosses over the more important details that actually appear on the exam (like the C2 auditing and analyzing the SQL 2000 performance counters). If you're familiar at all with the software, this book has little or nothing to offer you in terms of actually test preparation. Microsoft assumes everybody taking the certification exams already knows when to click the next button.. Don't waste your time or money on this. The Dummies book is much better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Little Book
I got my hands on several copies of the new Phrasebook series from Developer's Library back in April 2006 but as they were intended as handouts at my conference talks, I could not hold onto them long enough to review them. I've since managed to hold onto a copy of the MySQL Phrasebook long enough to review it and consider it worth the wait.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference tool
It's a very light book, slightly taller than your average paper back, weighing in at only 181 pages. In those pages the authors have managed to cram in lots of different types of information: From a basic introduction to the relational database model, to basic administration information, to query design and code examples in C, PHP & Perl. That's a lot of information for such a tiny book, so necessarily the coverage is brief. Fortunately the authors managed to hone in on the information from each section that would be most useful to the reader, and concentrate on that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need but organization might be better?
I am an experienced developer who purchased this book as a quick reference because I don't always have time to hack through the Oracle documentation. The book has been quite useful and I've found it has everything I need, but it is often difficult to find things because of the way the book is organized.
1-0 out of 5 stars No Star
Well , yes the so often chosen approach by technical book writers, of lets make it very large with lot's of STUFF, so it sells, which unfortunately most of the time does work. To get to the point, for a software developer, who actually has to produce a system or results outside of academia, this thing will get its best use as a fire starter if one has a fire place.
5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable. But experienced DBAs only please!
When I purchased Oracle in a Nutshell I thought I would need to buy another book for a quick reference to the data dictionary views but to my pleasant surprise these were included too.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for new DBA's
I bought this book upcoming becoming a SQL Server DBA. I had three years programming experience which included T-SQL, however, NO DBA experience! It provided excellent explanations of DBA tasks, especially the all important database backups and restorations. I did not require any other book resources. I highly recommend it for those entering the DBA field.
4-0 out of 5 stars New to SQL 2K....
I bought this book as a companion to my exam prep reading for Microsoft's SQL Admin exam. I only had 6 months of working with SQL2K when I started to read and study. This book gave great clarification on otherwise vague material. The detail was easy to understand on all levels. I have now been working with SQL 2K for 2 years and still go to my survival guide for reference daily. Also- it's on it's 2nd edition- How many tech books last long enough to go to a 2nd edition?!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, a bit wordy.
This book has a lot of tips about SQL Server, although it doesn't say that on the cover. This was actually good for me since I was going on a job interview and I needed something like a comprehensive tips reference book on SQL (and SQL Server).I could have easily chosen a worse book. It's a bit wordy for me, and I'm not used to seeing so many typos, but considering that I have seen some terrible SQL books out there (including my college text), this book is actually well thought out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything but the kitchen sink

1-0 out of 5 stars confusing book. Not well written, probably made in a hurry.
This book often uses concepts and code explained only in following chapters. I should have read the other (bad) reviews on Amazon before buying my copy in a library. Unfortunately I was in hurry. Now I am at page 202 and I am not sure whether I should continue or quit and wait 8 more days to get a better book.

5-0 out of 5 stars educational AND entertaining
This book is not meant to be a profound cache of code-snippets.Indeed there are some coding errors.I freely admit that I learned raw html "OJT" years ago, with little reason or time to learn anything more involved that wasn't required of me.I was a designer, typesetter and layout hanger, not a programmer.I have no experience in C or in Java.Call me a programmer groupie, I have dozens of family, friends and acquaintances who program miracles daily in all different alleys while I play a "very aesthetic game of tiddleywinks". When I began getting clients who wanted websites that DID things instead of just glorified yellow-page ads, this "turkey" asked all of the "eagles" which way to turn -- they looked at what I needed and what paths that might lead to, and they all said PHP. I started playing around with canned PHP webapps about two years ago, and I quickly picked up how to install mods and then modify those same mods no sweat, but even with a few different sorts of PHP/MySQL in 24 hours, one week, etc. books -- I never really understood the WHY's and HOW's of the GUTS of those webapps [framework, huh?!], let alone how to create even the simplest of freestanding flat calls, all of which have recently begun to make my life SO much easier.I quickly learned that those 24 hours/one week/etc. style books are ALMOST STRICTLY made for folks with C and Java experience even though the books desperately claim otherwise. Why did I choose this book?Because a few friends of mine who have been working with PHP since near the beginning told me that this was one of the few version'd books that always has a worthwhile amount to offer both beginners and seasoned pro's, as well as everyone in between.I actually started reading this one cover to cover, and was not the slightest bit disappointed in my investment.Let me clarify -- I actually COULD read this one cover to cover without wondering what magical decoder ring I was missing.Instead of a code snippet "Instant PHP" book, I finally wound up with one that I can look at the examples in the book, and without even trying the examples verbatim, write my own similar but original code for what *I* want to accomplish. I don't know Jane Adams, I am not her banker, and I don't know what I would do with her recipe database so 6 page long examples of how to code any of that to be used verbatim in 24 hours are of little value to me.Yes, the book jumps around -- there's a heck of a lot to cover here! 1000+ pages might seem rather hefty, but it has been a godsend for me.Take the reviews however you will; I found it extremely educational AND entertaining, and having seen dog-earred copies in the offices of some of said "eagles" -- I am fairly certain there is some great stuff in here for PHP pro's too.If you really feel the need, give it a few minutes at your local bookshop -- then come back to Amazon for the killer discount. You won't be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading
As the other reviewers have stated, there are quite a few code errors. However, I was impressed by the content. The dialog within the book is comprehensive as well as enjoyable. This is not a dry manual. It does jump around, but with so much covered, there's no correct navigational path to develop each topic in succession.I found it great to read the book, but create my own code based on examples found in the book.(Copying the code line by line didn't help me.However, copying the general information contained really expanded my knowledge.)This is a book for beginner and intermediate programmers interested in PHP. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Newbie
Chris Date's newest book reads not like a text nor like a how-to guide. It is more like a discussion with other database professionals about his labor of love. The assumption throughout is that his audience share his passion -- or at least his labor -- and have a significant level of experience in the field but who also have (from his point of view) waivered in the fudamentals of true relational theory.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good material, awful editing
The material is interesting, C.J. Date tries to go beyond the practicality of SQL and back to fundamentals of relational theory. He makes interesting points about NULL, duplicate values and such, but this assumes a fair level of familiarity with SQL (viz. you use SQL on a regular basis).
2-0 out of 5 stars Short yet wordy and painful to read. I returned this book.
I found that while the content of this book as within my grasp, "Database in Depth" was very hard to read. Judging from the content and writing style, I don't believe this book was written for practitioners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who said "puzzles"? ;-)
A marketing slogan at the back of the cover says "This little collection of puzzles is something to bash your head against while waiting your SQL epiphany". A little bit too promising.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good material but where is the source code?
I have been working with SQL professionally for about 5 years and I was looking for a collection of elegant SQL code tips and techniques from the pros to add to my arsenal. So I eagerly bought SQL Puzzles and Answers a few weeks ago and read it from cover to cover.3-0 out of 5 stars I love the puzzle approach to this topic.
One of the few puzzle books for IRM types.Joe's book is based on his columns in the now defunct Database Programming and Design magazine.Overall this is an excellent book if you work with SQL on a daily basis.I'd give it a 5 rating, but it's overdue for an update due to the fact that many, including Joe himself, have developed even better answers for the puzzles.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Consice and Comprehensive at That
Well, I was learning MS SQL with this book after I had some development experience with MySQL. This actually was the right book for me and I was able to quickly study those aspects of MS SQL that are different from MySQL. I was not only able to pass the exam but also acquired skills that I am currenty using on my job.
1-0 out of 5 stars What isproof reading
I think the author did good but it all went to pot at the proofreaders. A typo, error, or omission in 1 out of 15 pages.I had to write stuff in and cross stuff out. It would throw the novice SQL person off on XML alone because of the thouroughly botched job between XML auto and XML raw and claiming that the ELEMENT phrase can be used with XML RAW which it can not. One of many errors.Buy the MS training book, read BOL, get transcenders, but stay clear of this unless you are a seasoned pro that can pick out the mistakes from the good stuff

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book
Of all the technical books I have read, this is probably by far the worst. There are many typos; errors where the book uses the wrong word and throws you off; and inconsistencies where the text says something then the answer to the practice question says something different. But additionally, the book covers some materials insufficiently to be at all useful, in other words it is too condensed. This book is not enough to pass the exam. ... Read more
