5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Book for MySQL 4.x users
This book is very practical and gives a clean insight for Power Users of MySQL. It also illustrates some concepts in brief and gets user going fast. Some of the topics like backups, load balancing are covered very well. In short following is what I can say in points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book overall, but may grow obsolete to MySQL5.
I mainly bought this book so that I could get some insight into 'advanced' Storage and Replication techniques w/ MySQL.
5-0 out of 5 stars A computer book actually worth reading
I read approximately 2 computer-related books a month, and have done so for the last 10 years. This book is the best computer book I have read in the last 5 years, hands down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I highly recomend this book. I think it best serves those who already know the syntax of PHP, but it is a excellent book. I recomend either "Learning PHP" (The O'Reilly book) or "PHP for the World Wide Web : Visual QuickStart Guide" for a beginner. Both of these books will help you learn the syntax and concepts of PHP, but then it is best to move on to a book that gives practical examples, and this book excells at giving practical examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for getting started with php and databases.
By reading just the first 4 chapters I was able to create my own webpages using php and the mySQL database to store tables of data.It has some good example programs that you can follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sitepoint PHP and MySQL
Sitepoint (both the books and the website) is an excellent resource for quick learning of the latest and greatest in web development technologies, and this book proves it.Very clearly written and easy reading; a practical, hands-on tutorial.Provides everything necessary to develop and serve up a top-notch website backed by a powerful database. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for MySQL
This book is great for anyone getting started with MySQL.The book does an excellent job of helping the reader learn MySQL on both Windows and Linux systems, with most examples being run in tandem across both platforms. The books review of MySQL administration tools and clients is very in depth, and probably the best single-source coverage I have seen on the topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
This book opened up new database opportunities for me. Without it, I would never have unlocked the real power of MySQL 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect guide for database programmers
coming from the Visual Basic world (VB6, VB.NET), this book first helped me to use MySQL databases in my VB applications; later I had to make MySQL data available on the web and got used to PHP; again, Kofler's book provided excellent guideance in the various ways of interaction (mysql/mysqli) between PHP and MySQL

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of Oracle SQL
The content look deceptively simple. However upon further reading one finds that it covers many aspects or ORACLE SQL plus differences between ORACLE and ANSI standard.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive on basics but weak on advanced features
The book improves with each edition. The brief data modeling section is adequate but uses Information Engineering data models and should be updated to use UML. The treatment describing joins fails to adequately explain why you chose one over the other.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is Awesome!!
This book by Alice Rischert is one of the greatest Oracle SQL books ever written.I purchased the 1st edition of this book back in the day and it helped me pass the Oracle 8i OCP SQL exam. After reading the 1st edition, I was very much compelled to purchase the 3rd edition. The 3rd edition of the book is much better with all the errors from the previous versions corrected. This is the book they use for the students at Columbia University in New York. After you read this book and do all the exercises and test your thinking projects, you become a master of the subject. If you want to learn Oracle SQL, there is no greater learning tool than this book.Indeed, there is much time, effort, and loads of quality and research put into this book. The format of the book is reading and then hands-on labs which reinforce the topics you just read. After you read this book you should purchase the Oracle PL/SQL by Example third edition. It goes hand-in-hand with this book.AFterward, you'll know enough to go take the Oracle SQL and PL/SQL exam. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A real page turner
This book is so interesting that on a couple occasions I've fallen asleep reading it, because I want to "find out what happens next" -- not because it is boring.Even the chapter on queueing theory that has a lot of math in it is understandable and interesting, even though I have a mild aversion to math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance book
I purchased this book and did not open it for about 4 months. After reading the first 25 pages or so I became motivated to read more and finish it.It took me about 2 weeks to read through the entire book. The author does a really good job of detailing how to use Oracle tracing to troubleshoot performance related issues. With no shortage of Oracle performance tuning books this is definitely one of the better ones. This book must be one of the best performance related books because you can read it cover to cover. The book is packed with detail so you will reread several pages a few times, kind of like being in college and spending a couple of hours reviewing a couple of pages out of Calculus book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent book
I own about 30 books about Access (all versions). This book tops all of them. If you are using Access 2000 or 2002(XP) and you like to know about SQL Server (2000), trust me this is it. Try to read it from begining to the end. It's written in english language (not technical slang) and it shows you some cool tricks even for those Access 97 users. Hope to see more books from these guys. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent Resource for SQL Server and Access
This book is well written and easy to follow. The explanations are written in clear language and instructions are written out step by step. The book is well organized which means it's easy to use it more as a reference book. But, it is such a pleasure to read, you want want to skip a single page. This book covers both very elemental aspects of SQL, but also has much to offer the more experienced user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best - is #1 in my top 3 books to "use".
I read a lot of books covering topics from Access, SQL Server, to VBA.This book covers all of the "required" Access topics. It covers them better than any other book I have ever seen.It then goes on to cover topics I have not seen in other books or classes. While reading the book you will catch yourself saying why have I never seen this before, or hey I can use this! It uses Jet, Transact & VBA. Do you want to build better applications, do you want to know more than the competition, do you want to be a better developer? If so, this book is a definite purchase.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick way to learn SQL
An experienced SAS programmer, I used the many helpful examples in this book to learn a lot about PROC SQL in just a few days.(I skipped the text.)I trust the few typos and obscure passages will be cleared up in a subsequent edition.I thought the sections on normalization and integrity constraints were skimpy. The book has also been favorably reviewed in The American Statistician 2005, vol. 59, no. 4, pp. 350

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This book is very good. I've had the book for a month now, and use it every day. It is good because it covers both SQL and PL/SQL, as well as all the latest Oracle 10g database features.
4-0 out of 5 stars Even better than the last edition
Like the previous version, this is even better written. For starters to PL/SQL I recommend PL/SQL 101 and this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only SQL and PL/SQL book I actually use
I have three SQL and PL/SQL books, but this one is the only one I actually _use_ on a daily basis. It's a great book because it acts as both a training guide and reference book.Read more

Buy this book!!! ... I wanted 5-0 out of 5 stars All You Need To Learn DB2
This is an excellent resource for all those baffled programmers who need to learn DB2 fast. Thos book provides clear-cut examples, syntax, and the results of the various SQL commands that are most likely to be needed byany programmer. All the basics from simple SELECT statements are coveredall the way up to ORDER BY clauses, joins and so on. A special chapter onusing SPUFI was also a big help. The emphasis here is on the COBOL languageand mainframe computers, but it is an excellent learning tool for anyone. The book teaches by example and can be finished easily within a week (Theexample programs are what make it look so big). A must-read for anyoneinterested in relationall databases. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not bother
This book is a joke. It is poorly written, the grammar is crazy and wrong, and it dwells too much on events that are not important (click next, and click next, then click ok, and then next...). You would be well-advised to read another book, as well as BOL, before attempting 70-228.
4-0 out of 5 stars passed first ime.... but....
I just passed 70-228 first time using just this book and BOL as guides. I found the first half of this book a waste of time.Way too much attention to how-to examples of performing steps in the GUI (Click this, click next, click OK).The second half, however, was much more useful. One thing though. It is useful in that it offers a failry concise, objective by objective, summary of what you will need to know for the exam and then points to BOL for the actual information. It is short on providing information in and of itself.
1-0 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time and money!
Luckily I am already an Oracle DBA or I would not have been able to make real-world sense of the material presented in this book. In my opinion, it is pretty much worthless if you are preparing for the 70-228 exam or if you are wanting to work with SQL Server on the job. However, it is a great doorstopper/paperweight (which is why it is worth one star). Yes, I have passed the 70-228 exam, but I can guarantee you my passing had absolutely nothing to do with this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Work of Genius
I have withdrawn my earlier review because I did not properly understand the importance of this book until the second reading. That is a difficult admission to make since my business is database performance tuning.
5-0 out of 5 stars The first real SQL Tuning method.
I have worked with Oracle databases and SQL tuning since 1987, and the reason I recommend Dan's book so highly to anyone working with SQL is that his method is the first real method I've seen in this field. There are many approaches out there, but they all fall into the Guess & Grimacing or Checklist categories. Dan's is a REAL method, and it works for all SQL-based databases. It's so far the only SQL tuning book I can recommend. Any DBA, developer and troubleshooter working with database-centric systems should know this stuff.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended!
I am a software developer of over 30 years. While I am new to SQL server, I have been doing DBMS developement for over 15 years.2-0 out of 5 stars Not There.
Less chest-thumping and many more real world examples would have made this a better book. "SQL Server 2000 The Complete Reference" is over 900 pages and packed with lots of ink, but it lacks relevance and many times left me confused because of its hollow attitude.3-0 out of 5 stars This book is not for some people
Since this book was titled as a complete reference, and it received great reviews here, I decided that I should dive right into SQL Server with this book at hand.Unfortunately, I found that this book is not enjoyable to read for those of us who's attension is hard to hold.I imagine that many others (especially those who have some knowledge of the topic) would get some use out of it, but I'm posting this review to warn beginners, and people with short attension spans that this is not the book to start with even if you have technical knowlegde in other areas. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Needs technical review but has a ton of information.
I found the book extremely useful in getting me pointed in the right direction with Reporting Services. I used the book less as a technical reference and more as an overview of how Reporting Services works and what options are available for solving reporting problems in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
2-0 out of 5 stars A troubled work
Chapter 1 made several good points. Chapter 2 was more confusing in its presentation but I got something out of it. Chapter 3 began the hands-on so I installed the sample files and sample database contained on the accompanying CD-ROM -- only to find that I couldn't successfully install the database! The CD contains only the ".mdf" file for the sql database (no .ldf), not enough to "restore" or "attach"the database. Their script to install the DB also errored out. I was unable to locate any useful help or errata on the MsPress website. It looks like the authors spent a lot of time and effort developing the step-by-step examples so I'm quite disappointed that I can't proceed further into chapter 3. I'd recommend looking to the Microsoft SSAS tutorial instead of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm shocked
I am both shocked and surprised at how completely faulty this book is.I have the previous version of this book; Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Step by Step, and I don't remember it being this bad.Don't get me wrong, I know Reed Jacobson as I had met him at the SQL Server 2005 launch event, and I don't necessarily blame him for the poor standing.I do however blame Microsoft as there is no way they could have performed any sort of Technical Editorial on this book.If you do decide to buy it, watch out for the Writeback partitions exercise in Chapter 10.It blew up my Virtual Server.Twice. ... This book is very poorly written. It has a lot of technical details on three flavors of SQL implementation as well the SQL99 standard, but is totally light on general concepts. It tells you how to do something (but often in a convoluted way), but doesn't say why or for what purpose. There's also a lot of circular references which can drive the reader nuts.I do not like this book at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all-around book
If you want to *really* know SQL, this is the book.I've used this often when I had a really tricky data request.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very concise writing
I've had the distinct pleasure of being taught by Ms. Casteel for SQL. I later used this book on my own to learn PL/SQL and it is the closest text you will get to having her actually sitting in her room. If you want examples that follow a specific path to building one concept upon another. This textbook is implemented in my local Authorized Oracle Academic Initiative Center so you know you will be getting quality instruction in PL?SQL with this book. I think it beats OraclePress hands down for its accuracy and in-depth description of each concept. Get this book if you ever thought the other publishers tend to be too vague in conveying PL/SQL to you. Worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for SQL, excellent reference
This book, with no doubt, is easy to understand. It provides extensive coverage of the query language with excellent examples.
3-0 out of 5 stars conversational vs programming concepts
The explanations are presented in conversational language. This made it difficult for me to understand some of the concepts. I had to "translate" the explanations into more precise and concise language based on concepts familiar to programmers before I could grasp the ideas with confidence (assuming my translations are correct).

2-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized
I purchased this book to brush up on SQL programming that I had done in my previous career. The book offers a CD with versions of databases two or tree revisions back, most of which can be obtained free online anyway. NO database creation scripts, nor sample data is offered on the CD or on the publisher's website. You have to HAND TYPE it all in yourself. Even the sample data in the back of the book is incorrect. After hand typing in all this information, I created the sample queries while reading along in the book. The result sets in the book have no logical order. If a SELECT statement does not include an ORDER BY clause, the result should be in primary key order (if the PK is included in the SELECT clause) Their results in the book are arbitrarily ordered, so comparing my results to theirs is very tedious, matching up each line to ensure I received the same result. I find this very bothersome to a text on relational databases, whose purpose is to put data in logical order. The text itself does handle relational database concepts and the use of SQL to retrieve and manipulate the data well, but the examples and lack of source code warrant the two stars. I would suggest looking elsewhere for a SQL book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a Quick Introduction
This book makes for a well-written and relevant introduction for a beginner to DTS, which is what I was when I picked it up.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Book is Good but DTS is still full of bugs
The book is a good way for learning DTS.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too many "step by step"
I found the beggning chapters are good, but in the latter half, the number of steps became so many that it's painful to follow them. Chapter 7 has 70 pages of step-by-step and I found I am like a robot just going through the steps. (Well, I didn't do it until the end, I am not a robot).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't review, the book never arrived!!
I'm still waiting for the book to get to my house. I bought it on February 17th. It's passed more than a month and the book hasn't arrived yet. It makes me mad.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Written, Comprehensive, the Reason I Now Use Firebird RDBMS
This book is very well crafted. It is organized and thorough. With this book, the Interbase 6.0 manuals (available free on-line in PDF) and the Firebird software, you can create and maintain high performance, industrial software for use in production in environments of any size.I can not reccommend this book highly enough. If you need a database for your next project, you owe it to yourself to try out Firebird SQL.Use Ms. Borrie's book as a guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!
When I was buying this book, I was afraid if it will be only a printed version of PDF docs. But the book is much more, then simple documentation. Helen Borrie is a professional, and an experienced developer, so she often writes about programmer's bad habits or the reasons why databases are so poorly designed.
