5-0 out of 5 stars Get a jump on the replication learning curve
I'm new to SQL Server replication and this book is exactly what I needed.Mr. Cotter's book provides insights, tips and experiences that have put me far ahead of the learning curve. He distills his diverse knowledge on the subject into a form that is very helpful for the novice, like myself, and I suspect it is also helpful for the person that is moderately experienced with replication and the replication pro.Don't be intimidated by the size of the book. It's loaded with good information that isn't easily found by floating around the Internet. The personal touches in this book are nice too.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know about replication, but were afraid to ask
Having dealt with DB2 and Oracle databases for years I wasn't too worried when I suddenly "inherited" 40 SQL Servers. However I was not prepared for intricacies of bi-directional replication running over a cross country network! I wish I had this book back then to lessen the learning curve. This book is all that one needs to take on transactional and snapshot replication. Everything is in one place and organized in a logical manner.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but poor execution
It's true that this book fills an important gap in the SQL Server world-- there is no other book, to my knowledge, with thorough coverage of replication. And the information in the book is thorough, well-written, and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ASP reference book
This is an excellent companion book to 'Professional Active Server Pages'. Like most O'Reilly Nutshell texts, this book is designed more as a reference aid, rather than a learning text. If you buy both the Professional ASP tome, and this reference guide, you've bought everything you need for ASP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
As a student in college, I want to learn some advanced web programming language. I found this book is very helpful for beginner. I also get a discount from couponsky.com when buying this book. This book is not only useful for beginner's studying, you also can take it as reference after you finish the studying. I recommend this book to the beginners in ASP.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference and code samples, but...
Somewhat in a rush and while trying to learn ASP I purchased this book.I thought it was aweful and it collected dust for nearly 6 months while I searched elsehwere to boot myself up on ASP.However, now that I'm fairly proficient at ASP, this book has been helpful as a reference. No so much for the actual reference value but becasue the sample code helps put things in perspective. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good For Revision, But u need to Couple it with Another Reference

3-0 out of 5 stars Average exam review
A good review book explains all the topics in a consise fasion this book does explain the topics that well is a bit disorganized and has topics missing. There are better review books out the for SQL 2K

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not enough
This book is a good, general introduction to the 70-229 exam concepts - but I had to couple it with the Transcender practice exam before I felt comfortable taking the exam. The exam topics are so broad that the book doesn't do enough to emphasize when to use what.It also skips some important topics (sp_cursoropen) and its practice tests include Full Text Searches which the book notes are unlikely to be on the exam.To the editors: A 'databases' index entry with three pages of sub-entries is redundant in a book about databases.I love the Exam Cram series, but this was the poorest book of the bunch. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for SQL server self-learner
Excellent. It is a good reference for your SQL Server examination or self-learning. The examples are listed in details. If you follow them step by step, you can 100% learn the skills for your SQL server daily maintenance. I am not a professional in SQL Server, but after reading this book, I have much stronger confidence to use it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not enough T-SQL
Overall, I would say this book is well put together and is an excellent resource.I personally was hoping for a bit more meat on the programming of the T-SQL commands and methods, but the lack of that information is not the fault of the author, merely my selection of the wrong book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive coverage of what every SQL DBA should know
Packed with practical, real-world information for anyone involved with SQL Server Administration, "Beginning SQL Server 2000 DBA: From Novice to Professional" is one of the most complete administration books available. It is not without its problems but they are generally pretty minor and in fact somewhat humorous at times. For example, page 84 has a section titled "Upgrading to SQL Server 6.5" and page 90 a section titled "Upgrading to Earlier Versions of SQL Server".Obviously you don't upgrade to an earlier version nor do you upgrade from 2000 to 6.5.So, while there are errors, they are so obvious as to not be a big problem. When it comes to the technical details where accuracy is critical, I didn't find any obvious errors. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best overall for SQL Server Tuning
I am a SQL Server performance consultant to many large corporations and government agencies.I have read and re-read this book so many times I should know it by heart. Still, I carry it with me on consulting engagements everywhere I go.There is almost always someone at my client's site who wants to improve their performance tuning skills.I show them the book and tell them this is where you start.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on performance tuning
This is the best book ever written on performance tuning.Excellent text and very well written too. Thanks a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks!!

4-0 out of 5 stars "A 1"
Comprehensive. A good resource to have in the collection of books.
5-0 out of 5 stars If I had bought this book first I'd have save a lot of money
I have a lot of SQL server books. Everything from SQL Server 2000 for Dummies up to SQL Server 2000 Stored Procedure Programming. And many times none of these books had what I needed. Then I would turn to this book. I was using VB.Net, so I figured this book wouldn't apply, but I was wrong. Even if you are not using Access, this book explains SQL Server the right way. Chipman and Baron offer simple but thorough explanations and samples of the things you actually need to know as a developer. They don't spend a lot of time on the things a SQL Server DBA might need to know that a coder would not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Appears to be an excellent book.
This answers a lot of programmer level questions about using MS-Access with SQL Server. It describes the limits and penalties when going the various routes. The book is quite clear in its descriptions. It would make a good addition to any Access programmer's collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!
This book is perhaps the best and most useful technical book I've read in many years.I'm a seasoned developer with some good SQL experience but not much experience on the tuning side of the house (previously worked mostly with Oracle in large organizations where there was a DBA to perform the magic). Now I'm in a smaller organization where I have more exposure to the tuning aspects of SQL Server 2005.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent SQL Server Resource - my favorite IT book to-date!
This is an excellent overview of database performance tuning and optimization best practices. Packed with useful information. Each topic is accompanied by examples and presented in a clear, easy-to-read style. The only thing I found missing somewhat was some more elaborate examples of index analysis and tuning. I found the presented examples on indexing a bit too simplistic.
5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book
This was recommended to me by a senior DBA and I have learnt a lot from it.The text is accurate and very nicely written. It is detailed and covers a lot of very fundamental aspects of SQL Server tuning. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended if you are new to PL/SQL
The book is good and is recommended for someone new to PL/SQL. For someone who is already familiar to PL/SQL, you can save money by going through the Oracle Online Manual to read about the new features of PL/SQL in Oracle 9i. Since I already had a previous version (Oracle 8) of this book, I consider buying this book as waste of money. But if you are just getting into the world of oracle and you want to learn PL/SQL, this book is for you. One nice thing about the book is it comes with a CD that has some trial version of some development environments. Nice to explore those.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book to pass the exam.
This is, indeed, a great book to pass this exam(1Z0-147). Actually, there is no prescribed book(as of now!!), for this exam. This book fairly covers most of the topics that are specified in the official exam syllabus. However, topics on Large objects are not covered in this book extensively. I suggest to search on google for LOBS(This is how i got some notes on LOBS). This book is good to study functions, procedures, packages, triggers, and some DBMS packages, but it doesn't cover LOBS, managing dependencies. Overall, I can give 4 stars to this book, as it helped me to pass the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better IT books that I have seen
This is a well written, fast reading book that provides the reader with the information needed but not with the fluff that we do not need.I used this book to pass the Oracle Certification Exan 1Z0-147 : Oracle9i: Program with PL/SQL.If you own this book and 'Oracle PL/SQL' by Steven Feuerstein and Bill Pribyl (published by O'reily), you probably have what you need (for understanding PL/SQL) ... enjoy ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to pass the 1Z0-001 exam, look no further!!
This book set me on the right path!Having had no experience with Oracle, I had study only this book, went through its practice questions and lab exercises, and in 1-1/2 month's time, I passed my first exam with flying colors! If anyone is interested in becoming a OCP for Oracle9i and want to also validate your skills in PL/SQL, this book will definitely help you pass your first test. There are some example and question errors in this books, but most are not essential, or are at least noticeable. In any case, it delivers the results and I have nothing but high regards for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars 100%
This book is great. It's loaded with recommendations that I have not seen in other SQL books and I've read at least a dozen of them. Even the backup modules cover more information than anything I've seen. Every DBA should read this and stop complaining about this or that not being covered. If you looking for replication than find a replication book. It's impossible to cover everything about availability in one shot and this one comes close. 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I got this one to help me with setting up a HA replication arch.To be nice about it the repl info in the book is anemic.Next to nothing about it.I'm not sure how I will use the book and Im pretty disappointed iwth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars New High Availability Wizard for SQL Server 2000
I had to say something here. Everyone got so used to everything being easy in windows, they don't want to hear about also having to know what their doing. Do you think running big available db's is a step-by-step process that Bill left out of the books online? One book can't teach you a college degree worth of information. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The gate for the beginner
SQL Server, this is the topic that I think it is very hard for me to learn. But after I have try this book, it is really make really funny to learn SQL server. I learn a lot of basic things such as table, query, rule, user define function... from this book and now I could SQL Server to manage my own database. There are two advantage that I found in this book:
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
When I first started to read this book, I wanted to learn more about SQL, but this book failed. As the title says, it's pretty much just a bunch of step-by-step exercises and screen shots, but doesn't really get into too much detail, or give any reasons or explanation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
If you want 600 pages of screen shots with virtually no explanation of the underlying concepts being presented, then this book is for you.I cannot believe this book would be useful to anyone trying to learn SQL programming.A complete waste of money and time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MySQL and how to use it effectively!
The book is "A Desktop Quick Reference" just as billed on the cover. It is explicitly MySQL-centric and doesn't stray from that core message. It is extremely up-to-date considering the rapidity of movement in MySQL development progress.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another Solid Nutshell Book
Ah, "Nutshell" books - you gotta love `em. Or maybe you don't. I won't get into the pros and cons of online documentation versus books because this subject has been rehashed ad infinitum. Truth is, there are pros and cons for both, and we each have our own reasons for our own preferences.
4-0 out of 5 stars you need a background in SQL
Well the book certainly seems to cover MySQL's features quite comprehensively. But, as it is a reference manual, it does not attempt to teach you MySQL or the theory of relational databases. For a given MySQL command, the book's explanation is succinct and useful. Provided you already have a background in the area. Much of the book's discussion is probably already available in equivalent form in the online help. But hardcopy is nice to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars small and excellent
Very practical and after every command there is a very useful example.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, quick reference
This is an excellent reference to the MySQL language. It is faster to use than the online MySQL documentation, and can go anywyere. This is a better reference to MySQL than the O'Reilly book 'SQL in a Nutshell' (first edition), which left out many key MySQL commands and clauses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
I'm always looking for a good MySQL reference. I find myself looking for the syntax of a particular command. This book comes in handy when looking for a particular MySQL command. For the size of this book, is really packs a ton of information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book for DTS
This book clearly explains what DTS Package is ,about Datawarehousing and some conceopts about SQL Server Security...I liked this book very much and helped me a lot for my project

2-0 out of 5 stars Forget about this.
Expect to see "foobar","Hello world", "The time is blah blah blah"and all that useless examples. This book is entitled "Professional" SQL Server 2000 DTS but you will end up getting (chicken) scratch on the surface:it tells you little about everything.Good only if you are a in the management, it will make you sound like you know what you are talking about.if you are a developer, better off find something else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
You'd think an 880-page tome from Wrox on something as specialised as DTS would pretty much have you covered anytime you need a reliable DTS reference to get you through your Data Transformation tasks. I have found myself looking to this book for guidance on many occasions during development, only to be consistently disappointed. For a start, the Index is downright useless, since I was never able to find words I would expected to, such as delimiter, lineage, disconnected edit, parameterised query, identity insert, but it has an entry for DNS?? (which, btw refers to a 3-line explanation of URLs when using Internet Explorer!) The book is so large mainly because every other page is a GUI snapshot, most of which are unnecessary. I don't need a whole page dedicated to the "Syntax check was successful" message box.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, bite-sized chunks of PHP goodness
All computer books should be written like this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning
I didn't know anything about PHP or mySQL but using the book I've managed to build myself a decent web application.Great to learn and walks through a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars a very interesting and well written book
This book was a true revelation to me. I've read a couple introduction books in php and tried some more advanced books. But they all stuck to small examples and none of them explained how to code a real life working web application from scratch. This book does, in such way you get totally hooked and can't stop reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars MS Access Database Workgroup Security.
A good book will find the reader.I would like to thank Mr. Robinson for a well written read.Besides all the other things I have in my life to do I was able to finish his work in about two weeks.I have read all the other reviews; there is nothing I can add.I can however tell you that if you are into Access database (and you know if you are) then this book is an imperative.I have had many books on Access database pass my way, nothing compares with Mr. Robinsons' book on security and protection.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for MS Access Security
This has got to be the best MS Access resource book that I have purchased.Like others, I have found MS Access security hard to understand but with Gary Robinson's help I am now getting a grasp on how I can keep sensitive data secure. The book is aimed at those who are new to security as well as those with experience. Also, the downloable database, with forms and code that you can easily use in your own applications, is a real time saver.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best book for MS Access Security
This is the perfect book for MS Access Security since it caters to all levels of users and is extremely easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great SQL Style Reference
This is a great reference for how to write clear, concise, and efficient SQL. If you are looking for good ideas for SQL coding standards, you will find them here.
4-0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book
Wading through badly written SQL is a nightmare on the best of days.Proper--and consistent--attention to capitalization, indentation, and other formatting standards makes SQL much more readable and therefore maintainable. The standards outlined in this book are for the most part very well thought-out, and a great starting point for creating a set of enterprise SQL development standards. If more SQL developers would read this book, I would have many less headaches in my day-to-day work, so I believe this is a valuable purchase.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book in excellent style
Too many database books are written by developers whose expertise is OOP and not SQL.While I don't agree with Mr. Celko on every point, keep in mind that he was on the SQL Standards Committee for 10 years.Even if you don't agree with him on every point, his level of expertise is undeniable - unless, perhaps, the questioner can provide evidence of greater knowledge and expertise.
