4-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Excellent Book for the "Beginner"
This book is really quite good. It's very interesting & definitely very readable. When I read it, I got straight down to business, so to speak. It gives very practical examples starting you off with making a movie review site which was very interesting! All in all, an excellent book to give you a working knowledge of PHP & MySQL.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid coverage of beginning topics
I used this book as a tutorial on the subject with graduate students who had only basic programming experience and we all agreed that it was a great way to get started with database-backed PHP work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth One Star
Worst book of all time, sorry guys and gals but whoever wrote and edited this book should buy a book themselves "Learn to Write and Edit by DUMMIES".To many typo's and script errors which did not work!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor Organization
I've had a terrible time learning SQL Server programming from this book.I've got lots of Oracle experience, so picking up T-SQL should have been fairly easy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive book
What I like on this book is that it is very comprehensive.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poor rewrite of old book, "old" version of SQL Server 2005
Looking for a book to use as a training guide. First of all, this book was written using a BETA version of SQL Server 2005. Many areas changed from beta to full release of SQL Server 2005, therefore already a big worry about this book. Secondly, for a beginners book to only talk about installing SQL Server in Chapter 16 (part III of the book!!!) is poor and shows a book thrown together in my opinion. It looks as if this is an update of his previous book (?) where there is text clearly about SQL Server 2000 with an "add on" sentence saying how SQL Server 2005 has changed this. For beginners this is confusing. They dont care about SQL Server 2000 or if they did they would buy a SQL Server 20005 Beginners Guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars PL/SQL Learning Tool
I use this book to learn PL/SQL. It is well-written and easy to follow. The codes in the book are also helpful for learning and practicing what you are reading. The book is good for biginners and certainly useful for intermediates and experts. If you are new to PL/SQL programming, after going through this book carefully you should start writing your own codes in PL/SQL. The book can also be used as reference to check syntax or to review concepts. There are certainly other PL/SQL books but this one can be a starting point. Overall the author did a good job and I can recommend the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference of PL/SQL programming!
I use this book for reference of PL/SQL programming. Ther're some examples in the book. The format and index of this book is good too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Judging a book by its promise
I rate books by what the author states as the goals for the book. The Introduction to any book should tell you this. Oracle 8 PL/SQL Programming states that the book "is appropriate for both experienced programmers who neet to know just the syntax for PL/SQL and its advanced features, and for novice programmers who are not familiar with other third-generation languages." While there is much to recommend in this book it does not fulfill its promise.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars MCDBA, MCSE, MCSD, MCAD Training Guide
The book met the requirements of the course it was being used for... it was how ever a little bit lax on the code portion...when it came to doing the project it left a bit to be desired in clarity of how to build a data base in SQL...

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!!
Why can't authors ever flow through a book in an ordely manner? What is the point of jumping from chapter to chapter? For example, many times through out this book references are being made to up coming chapters about specific topics in chapters that don't belong there. Why do you tell the reader about an up coming topic in a chapter that doesn't belong there and then ask a question about it in the chapter test. Why even make a chapter about that specific topic if your going to include it in a chapter that doesn't belong there?Thats a little redundent!!Also the author likes to give you examples on how to do certain things the right way, and then tests you on something he never covered in the chapter. If the topic has nothing to do with the chapter, do not include in the chapter. If you do include it into a chapter in which it doesn' belong, don't include it into the chapter test. How do you expect the reader to completely understand and answer the question if he or she knows nothing about it?Unless, your wanting the reader to stop what there doing, flip to the chapter and read it, then go back to the previous chapter your testing on just for that one little question that doesn't belong.Rediculous!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as dead on as others in the series
I just passed the 70-229 exam this morning with an 862. My study strategy involved reading this book cover to cover over a 2 week period and taking some uCertify practice exams.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a real good book to master PL/SQL
The book is good but many solutions are not tested fully so its not that they can be cut and pasted directly out of the book. you may have to troubleshoot many of them. Otherwise a real good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One for the must have collection !
As a Developer working predominantly with Oracle Databases for over five years, I'm always looking for books to help me produce better code.I have to say this is one of them. The author has produced a book that explains concepts in a practical manner that is also easy to read.I began reading this book just before starting a major development project and the code insights and examples assisted me greatly in this project.
5-0 out of 5 stars By far, one of the best book on practical Pl/sql
With 15 years experience in Oracle as DBA and developer, Iwrote a lot of packages and found in this book true advices and practical solutions, wich sound good to me. The best feature is that you can experiment all the code found in it and see by yourself the advantage of using the way proposed by McDonald. I like these books where autors breaks some common ideas ans show by "A + B" that the right solution is not the most common. A real useful book written by a true professional. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A good book for windows users
I bought this book a couple of days ago after reading the cover (Bad Jon, never judge a book by its cover) and learning that it teaches you in both Windows and Linux. This is not the case.I am still in chapter one trying to configure Mysql under Linux. There is very basic linux setup configuration and then the book just assumes Windows is what you will use.I am retiring this book and picking up another.

3-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and easy to understand, but ineffective
I almost gave it two stars, but that wouldn't quite be fair. The book is written in a comfortable, informal tone and is easy to understand. It is well edited. The trouble is that it, like many programming books, doesn't TEACH YOU THE LANGUAGE.To use metaphor, it teaches you how to say, "Where's the bathroom" in PHP, but not what "Where's," "the" and "bathroom" mean and how to use them in other sentences. It uses the tools of PHP to make a jig for you to perform one very specific task, but it doesn't give you the tools.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginning Book
I'm about half way through this and have browsed the remaining half already. This book is a good beginning book for PHP and MySQL.They cover the basics quickly, yet effectively. The numerous examples give you the opportunity to apply the knowledge and practice writing code.

3-0 out of 5 stars could be better
The main problem I have is with the lack of editting. His choice of words can really leave you confused sometimes.I keep having to cross out unneeded words and correct his grammar so that the puzzle will be solved if I need to come back and read the same part later.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still a bit rough, but useful
I've been a programmer for longer than most programmers have been alive, but I'm new to SQL Server and Visual Basic. This book looked like it would be the perfect introduction to both, but it seems to have been rushed to market. It appears that chapters 11 and 12 were once a single chapter, and were split without a lot of subsequent editing in either the book or the sample code on the website. On the second page of Chapter 12, for example, it says "The samples to this point in the chapter...", but there haven't been any samples to this point in the chapter. This is somewhat understandable in a printed book, but as I write this (5/13/2006) the book has been out for almost 5 months, and the sample code on the website still has all the code piled together in a folder called "Sample code for chapters 11 and 12".This makes it harder than it needs to be to find the code the author is referring to when one wants to get some context for the snippets of code in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review from a beginner's point of view
I have just a little experience in access 2000 so the thought of moving to SQL databases was scary. Rick Dobson did a great job of taking the fear out of SQL with his book Beginning SQL Server 2005 Express. He takes you step by step through the process of working with SQL Server 2005 Express. The lessons are paced for the beginners and the code examples work, that in it self is something new. He starts you at the beginners level and then brings you to some of the advanced topics.

Editorial Review

The author uses an interesting didactic innovation that every textbook writer should consider imitating:Instead of illustrating ideas with microprograms, which are good for almost nothing except illustrating theidea, Pratt develops two examples throughout the entire book. By the time you complete this thin butcomprehensive volume, you will have completed two real databases. The book also contains embeddedquestions so you can check whether or not you've grasped specific concepts before proceeding to the nextsection. Pratt's extended case studies show how SQL programs can be layered on one another other toslowly build up functionality. As such, it serves both as an SQL language manual as well as an example ofhow to create relatively large SQL codes. This book does not make specific reference to any particular SQLimplementation, so it can be used with any standard SQL engine. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really bad, but not that good either
I didn't choose this book, it is required for an SQL class I am taking. In our class we are using Microsoft SQL Server 7, and the book tells you that the code will work on any flavors of SQL (or maybe I misread) but it actually focuses on Oracle. Some commands are really different for MSSQL,which uses Transact-SQL, and I have to do a lot of searching to find the equivalents in Microsoft's version.1-0 out of 5 stars Database concepts given are very confusing.
The book "jumps" around a lot. Many concepts of the Database are not clear or confusing.I take a Database design class which requires this book, but I absolutely don't recommend it to anyone looking to get some knowledge in SQL.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does a beginner need to know about performance tuning?
This is Wrox's book for those keen to learn SQL who have no experience of database programming at all. The good news is that it's not bad. Unfortunately it is two books rather crudely glued together.
5-0 out of 5 stars As the Title Says, Good Beginning Book
This is a good general introduction to using SQL to build a database, put some data into it and then to get it back out when you need to use it for something. The author says that all of the SQL examples have been tested using MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Microsoft Access, and Oracle 10g. That says that the SQL used in the examples has to be very general in nature and not take advantage of newer and more powerful commands that have come about since these programs were written (particularly Access which uses the Jet engine that's more or less compliant with SQL:89).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Good Enough
It is a decent book. I believe using this book alone you will not pass the test. Unless you have been working on oracle for a while. I used this book as supplement of the Sybex study guide. The practice exam questions were helpful. I passed my exam (1z0-001) on March 29, 2004 relying on the Sybex Study Guide. I would not recommend this book to someone new to oracle but I can recommend that as second reference.1-0 out of 5 stars full of errors!
This book has so many errors! The exercises are vague. Some of them don't really make any sense. The author doesn't seem to have very clear knowledge. At least, this was my first impression.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enough to Pass the Exam
There are errors in the book. But the material covered in the book is enough for passing the 1z0-001 Exam .I used only this book considering that it is from oracle press and have no prior oracle experience.Passed with 53/57.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If I had to pick just one Sql book this would be it
This is by far the best book available on Microsoft's Sql Server. I found it much far more informative and much deeper than Kalen Delaney's book - the only other one that comes close. It is a book unlike any other that I have read on Sql Server in that it is extremely deep - deeper than just about any technical book I think I have ever read - and extremely broad. Most books are one or the other, but this one really is both. Every chapter is a treasure chest of useful info. Several could be books unto themselves. The discussion of DTS for example is actually better than whole books on the subject. The User Mode Scheduler chapter is so deep I had to read it twice. The list could go on and on.
2-0 out of 5 stars A book of leftovers
Alas, this book was a VERY disappointing reading.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I expected
500 pages of Win NT/2000 fundamentals in a SQL Server Architecture book. Come on, get real Ken Henderson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transact-SQL Desk Reference
Just the kind of book a person needs in their reference library. Well indexed. A complete explanation of each SQL command with examples. 20 pages covering XML, 781 pages in all. It is also made of quality material so it can be handled frequently without falling apart.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
The back of this book claims that "This is the SQL reference you'll reach for first!" and I can personally support their claim. It is easily the best organized SQL reference that I have encountered. It contains alphabetical listings of all SQL data types and their related functions, in-depth instruction on data definition (create, alter, drop, etc.) and comprehensive descriptions and examples of all data manipulation methods (insert, update, delete, etc.).
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Content - Not So Good Index
This book is exactly what it's title says, it's a reference book. If you need brief descriptions and syntax for T-SQL statements and functions, this is a great book to have on your book shelf. However, the index is very weak. It is essentially an alphabetical listing of functions, so you need to know the name of a function to find it. For example, if you wanted to add an INDEX to a table, you would probably look under "I" for "INDEX.". But, you wouldn't find what you were looking for. You would need to look under "C" because the function is "CREATE INDEX." But, if you know what you are looking for, you'll find it in this book. ... Read more
