1-0 out of 5 stars A useful doorstop
As a DBA, Data Architect and C# developer,, I need clear, concise and pragmatic examples. My life is busy, I do not have the time to read someone else interpretation of MS ideology. Just give me the beef and let the CPU worry about the rest.
2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best
If you love XML and SQLCLR, this book is for you.For me, I do most of my work using .NET and T-SQL.This book left me wanting when learning about those topics.I love XML like the next person but having so much dedicated space to it is overkill for most people.Save your money if you're a mainstream SQL Server developer and buy a different book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad
This book has a good explanation of the many new features in SQL Server 2005.However, I can only give it three stars as it is chock full with grammar - and worse, syntactical errors. My binding has also fallen apart in a matter of a few days of reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A long time Oracle and Mysql programmer learns the basics of ADO.NET
--A Concise Reference with only the useful information. ADO.NET really does take a different approach from the other database API's. I have worked alot with JDBC, MySql (via java and PHP), Oracle and ODBC. In ADO.NET, the concept of a disconnected Dataset forces you to rely heavily upon Microsoft's Object model. The alternative to this book seemed to be either: Search through MSDN's reference material Or Purchase one of the many books which regurgitate the steps in using the wizards. The MSDN reference material really did not show me the expected "idioms" or paradigms in writing function db applications. This book helped me to understand what is really happening beneath these opaque designs. It helped me to understand and solve some of the necessities in creating data driven ASP.NET DB applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft MVP 2005 - Visual C# loves this one
I own over 50 books on .NET including several on ADO.NET.This book is my favorite on ADO.NET.Thus, it is the one I use most often. It has a great blend of discussion, documentation, and code samples. It is much easier and more thorough than much of the MSDN documentation or most other books.I've yet to run into a situation where the answer I need isn't either in this book or gives me a great starting point to find that answer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!
I've owned this book for 3 days and cannot put it down!I have not been a big fan of O'Reilly over the years, but this book is "incredible".It goes into the detail that most books seem to omit and it's those details that we "developers" desperately need.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much verbage, takes forever to get to the point
If you need to learn XQuery or XPath fast, this is not the book, or you need to skip the first 8 chapters.XQuery and XPath are hardly even mentioned until Chapter 9.The first 8 chapters discuss everything except what is in the title.XML is a pretty boring topic, and excess verbage doesn't help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A balanced view of XQuery with several excellent use-cases
The authors are XQuery standardization committee members with long tenures at Oracle, thus possessing an unique grounding in that 'other' query language, SQL. As a result, the book is balanced with respect to what SQL/XML and XQuery can respectively do. A number of examples are provided, to illustrate where XQuery is useful and where other query mechanisms might work.

3-0 out of 5 stars DTD, but little Schema
My only complaint with this book is that it emphasizes DTD over Schema a bit too much. For this and other reasons, I felt the treatment of XML seemed a little dated, and also a bit shallow. ... Read more

Once in a while a book comes along that covers an area of development that has previously been largely ignored. Both MySQL and Perl are well documented in several tutorials, but in-depth coverage of Web development using the combination of the two is rare. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to get you up to speed
Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book on the condition that I would write a review of it.That said, what follows is my opinion.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on both MySQL and Perl.
There are plenty of books about MySQL and PHP in bookstores. Yet, I still prefer Perl as my web page languages, thanks to its powerful regex and the similarity to C grammar (Some functions have exactly the same name and take the same arguments as in C).
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the most important book in my library (of over 300)
Like many others, I wish I'd seen this book long ago.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, but ...
I've not decided to get this one before because i already had a couple of SQL books for the 70-228 (Unleashed, 70-228 for Dummies and SQL in 10 min from Ben Forta) book's reviews were not so good either. But ... i went to a major book store last night and i was able to hold the book on my own hands and read some chapters. My 1st impression, after read a few pages quickly, was a good one. Nice explanations...a lot of graphics (i love that, it helped me a lot when i'm studying)It's the kind of book you like to read and you enjoy the lecture at same time. But ... but ... it is not complete and it just gave a quick brief on most of topics.
1-0 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY Incomplete Information
I bought this book because 1)I have absolutely ZERO experience with Microsoft SQL 2000 and 2)I have used Sybex books in the past to help me gain knowledge of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, of which I have passed all exams.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Contents
Coming from Oracle background I am currently using this book to prepare for my MCDBA certification. I would not rate myself as beginner because I have dealt with MS SQL Server on many occasions but not heavily. I am pacing myself with one chapter a day. So far I read about 5 chapters and I would admit that the content is good. Like any other technical book, this one also has some mistakes. In my case I started seeing the mistake on pages 145 and 146. On those pages the authors stated that to see the file id you need to run in the SQL Analyzer the stored procedure sp_helpdb. That is not true at all it should be sp_helpfile. I caught that mistake quickly because I really understood the previous information given and related to file, and I also tested the stored procedures listed in the book. I did check the errata on sybex website nothing is listed concerning that mistake but there are some other corrected mistakes though on the website.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great book for a SQL Server 7.0 DBA.
I wish all books were written this well.3-0 out of 5 stars Good tips, but errors...
I found this book to be an OK reference. However, the author has mistakes in the treatment of RAID levels for DASD.Nice high level view of queuing theory and the basics of using histograms for analysis.

2-0 out of 5 stars A few tips, but not worth buying
If you find yourself navigating the online bible (SQL Books Online) to figure something out then you are better off buying something else.I was dissapointed that no value was added beyond what you can get from theonline books. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars You Don't Have Much Choice
This is one of only two books on MDX available. Since I purchased this book, which is certainly dated, the new version of MDX Solutions by George Spofford et. al. has shipped. I haven't read it yet though I have it on order. This one was not written for Analysis Services 2005; however, the basic syntax of MDX has remained the same. If you are completely new to MDX and need a book to walk you through the basics of MDX then this book is decent. Nothing spectacular, but decent. It's easy to read and pretty fast to go through as well. Then again, you don't have much choice! If you are going to be doing a lot of MDX then like me you probably want to buy both books. One note, my copy of this book has several pages in the back that are almost completely white. It wasn't printed properly. As far as I know a new edition of this book is not coming anytime soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars is MDX really that superior to SQL?
The book is from Microsoft and talks about the MDX language. Through it, you can express Business Intelligence in OLAP, where the latter runs atop SQL Server 2000 and 2005. MDX can be seen to have more than just a passing resemblance to SQL. No doubt a deliberate choice by Microsoft, to appeal to the myriad SQL programmers out there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbook
Great book.Simple as that. Before FastTrack, MDX was a mystery. Now it is clear. As other reviewers have said, this book is certainly not the last word on MDX, but is should certainly be your first. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf
The Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf is an excellent valued reference tool for programmers wanting to develop software in an open source web environment. Not only does it contain the full text for six of O'Reilly's best sellers on open source web development, a search engine for each book, and a master index, but also it has a number of relevant articles that have posted to the O'Reilly Network. It has a easy to read web-browser interface.5-0 out of 5 stars Linux web server CD bookshelf
Just as the Web Programmers CD bookshelf that I had the opportunity to read, the searching abilities of the cd bookshelves are excellent. Being able to search a certain topic across 6 books at once makes searching for quick answers easily accomplished. Being able to buy 6 books on a single cd also helps to save money while at the same time helps to build your own library of in depth books. The combination of books included in the Linux web server cd bookshelf has enough detailed information to help teach you the ins and outs of running an Apache web server on a Linux platform. Also the Programming PHP and the Managing & Using MySQL books should help you make full use of your Linux web server and understand the flexibility of what can be done.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is for a beginner
If you are a dba with I would say less than 1-2 years experience, then maybe get this book. For a seasoned dba, its going to be a big disappointment.I was expecting explanations at a much more granular level covering much more complex topics. Its basically a primer on how to do the most basic things via the gui (oh, and by the way there is a stored procedure way to do things too).If you are new to SQL Server EM and are unfamiliar with the menus, wizards, and the gui, then it might be a good "get me out of the frying pan quickly" book. And I say "might" because most people can figure things out just by going through the gui and looking at Books Online. The most useful chapter, I found, was the auditing chapter. Some things the authors point out about security I would actually disagree with if I was building a "highly" secure system. For example, which accounts to put in the admins group. For what its worth, I got a lot more from the MS site believe it or not. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not great
This book was released just after SQL 2005 was released. So the author probably had to write much of it while SQLS 2005 was still in flux.
2-0 out of 5 stars dont read this book
backup and restore topics are useless, It will mislead you. It has got lot of typos. Overall its ok book but I dont recommended this one. I bought this after reading amazon reviews but disappointed after going through few chapters.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good in parts - too many errors
Overall this book is a good introduction to SQL server. However the book has too many errors relating to the sample database. The entire section dealing with joins, references table columns that do not exist in the Adventure Works sample database. Additionally there are random mistakes throughout the rest of the book regarding the sample database. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advanced Level MDX Book
If you are new to MDX, this book is not going to be an easy read at all. However, it has a very good "MDX Function and Operator Reference" as an Appendix. This reference is indispensable to me when I am writing MDX statements. It is much more usable than the online reference that ships with SQL Server Analysis services.
3-0 out of 5 stars A great potential for enlightment reduced to pain?
Don't be surprised by the bad reviews this book has got here. There is a good reason for that. This is a strong text that deserved a good reviewer or a talented co-author.
5-0 out of 5 stars hmm... it offers solutions however
i don't know why people here complains about lack of solutions. what's about me, i've found many useful tips & solutions inside that book. especially how to use virtual cubes and make them really 'virtual' with morphing underlying dimensions and measures extremely with mdx. more, these methods work well in the real world. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good information
This book has been well written. Concise, but to-the-point. Coverage on Share point portal and Microsoft CRM is the most comprehensive comparing all the other SRS books in the market. I would recommend you buy this book as well as Wrox to be complete.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow
I began this book with limited Reporting Services experience, not really knowing what to expect. What I found in every chapter was that the authors really took the time to explain the nuances of this technology that can only be understood from working with it in the real-world and not on a sample database with simple reports. I also learned much more about basic and advanced queries that really helped me out with parameters and stored procedures. I would definitely recommend this book for everyone new to reporting services and those who would like to get answers to detailed reporting scenarios.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good when Reporting Services 2005 came out but only Fair
This book at the time was a life savor when Reporting Services 2005 first came out.But as I raced to produce very complex reports in SSRS 2005 in 2006, I quickly realized that this book lacked a lot of very complex scenarios. It is a great book if your organization does only basic reporting but if you're looking for in-depth information on expressions, calculations, etc. this book will not do.It's always a very good starter book and recommend it before you jump into any really complex reports and one that I'll probably still reference for a variety of topics since it does cover the topics quickly but at the same time a good introduction at least.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I found this gem in the usual aisles at my favorite bookstore among other technical books.Yet, this is a book on SQL, OLAP, Warehouse and metrics that is great because "he cuts to the chase".So many technical books have way too much information and boring paragraphs with little real world examples or insights or lessons learned.
