5-0 out of 5 stars From Rags to Riches- Indeed!
Every detail about this man is worth reading. It tells you that if youhave the urge within you to do something you really can do it. It hasdefinitely motivated me a lot. It is also very well written and makes youfeel "I wish I was a part of the Amazon family"

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting.
I get the impression from this book is that the only the author has written before was his signature. While the story was very interesting it was quite poorly written.5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story of an idea turning into a business.
If you want to understand what's involved with starting an internet business from scratch, this book will provide a detailed look at how CDnow became successful, despite humble beginnings. The story of Jason andMatthew Olim's business, from concept to profitable operation, isfascinating, and instructive for entrepreneurs and corporate types alike. With the able guiding hand of Peter Kent (the journalist/author) this bookis well-written and easy to read.I'd recommend it highly. ... Read more

Justin's Epitome is one of our five major classical sources on Alexander the Great, but he never made it into an English translation until the publication of this book by Yardley and Heckel. That alone makes it unique.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely delightful!
This is just a SUPER book! There are great photos of Mks I, II, III, and IV and of their componants, great material on Aiken, and this book imparts a lot of the feeling of the time. You get the feeling that if you werethere, in Aiken's shoes, you'd have done things the same way - there werereasons for the use of relays as basic computing elements for instance. There's a great chapter by Grace Hopper, "Why The Mark I Is MyFavorite Computer" and chapters on construction, programing, and soon. The book makes clear that Aiken was a man who believed in rolling uphis sleeves and building a working machine that could be used, rather than, like Charles Babbage, just dreaming and never getting anything built. Thismade all the difference in the world; keep in mind that Babbage was thelast person to try building a large general purpose calculator, and hisfailure kept the whole field in stasis for close to a hundred years. Aikenhad a score to settle, and he settled it all right. ... Read more

Editorial Review

International grandmaster Yasser Seirawan has a knack for communicating not only the playing of the game, but also an enthusiasm for it. In this first of a four part series, Seirawan talks to the chess novice. He explains the game's development and basics of play, sharing stories of some of the wild and wonderful characters from chess history and Seirawan's own experiences. The language is simple and nontechnical enough for the greenest newcomer, who will hardly seem green at all after absorbing the lessons of this terrific introduction to chess. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not his best work
This is probably the last Introduction type chess book I will read. I picked this book up mainly to start off on his series of books, but I felt that after reading this book, it really fell short in comparison with other beginners chess books, like Chess for the Complete Idiot, and his other books in the series, like "Winning Chess Tactics". I am not sure what changed between the this book and his other books, but I am glad that it did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction for the novice
Although I was not a complete novice when I read this book, it has helped me improve my game and organise my thoughts. Although sometimes it seems to be too simple, it has helped me find good moves when things get complicated.
5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must.......
Before we get into it I'M currently a 2025 USCF rated tourney player and I'M still improving! My current rating was achieved with correct study and hard work. If you are interested in improving your play then you can do no better than starting with Seirawan's Play Winning Chess.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dark Menace will inspire you to Create and Dream
I purchased the Dark Menace back when it released in July 2005. I really enjoyed this book. I usually don't read to many books that I just could not put down. Tom Filisinger's past kinda takes you back to when you were a kid playing with your friends and dreaming of creating comics or role playing from your favorite TV shows, wrestling programs or Movies. This book will inspire you not to give up on your creative passions and encourages you to never give up and persue your dreams. I would recommend it to any one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 'Dark Menace' is Disturbingly Good!
If you have never heard of Tom Filsinger, Filsinger Games, Legends of Wrestling, or Champions of the Galaxy, this is the book for you!Mr. Filsinger, a college professor, successful entrepreneur, devoted husband, and loving father discusses and dissects the creative and artistic processes that lurk deep down inside all of us.Being a "Dark Menace" is all about expressing yourself creatively, having an independent point of view, not succumbing to groupthink or the opinion of the masses if you disagree with something, striving to be the best you can be at everything you do, and feeling good about it all at the end of the day!
4-0 out of 5 stars Been a Menace fan since 1989
I am from England I have been playing Tom's cards game since Nov 1989 . They are just great . Even better than today's WWE wrestling . Tom runs a wrestling cards game mainly held in the future . Wrestlers from all over the galaxy fighting out feuds and for belts . Ever wanted to be your own promoter , what fan hasn't ? . With Tom's card you can . He has now written a book about his life and how the cards started . Its interesting , funny in parts and hard to put down . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I've read a lot of the "history of computers" books, and this one is a standout. It's great fun to read and avoids that POV that the first computer ever was the Apple I.

4-0 out of 5 stars The early days ofUnivac, Control Data, and Cray.
Lots of first person inside information about the early days of commercial mainframe computers. The story covers Univac, Control Data Corporation (CDC) and Cray. The author tells how disenchanted Univac employees founded CDC and then later how Cray was founded when CDC managed to offend their lead designer Seymore Cray, whom they had lured away from Univac. The strange and incestuous relationships of the three companies is covered from an insider's point of view. The author reveals what a hotbed of computer development the Twin Cities (St. Paul and Minneapolis Minnesota) was in the '60s and '70s. It also has some absolutely fascinating information about Seymore Cray. Any serious student of computer history should have this book. ... Read more
