5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Kimball Fisher and Mareen Duncan Fisher document the special skills needed for the new but increasingly common task of managing far-flung work groups. The approaches that they examine are becoming increasingly essential for all managers. Although they explore relevant technologies carefully, their human relations advice is probably more important. The Fishers emphasize the interpersonal and leadership skills that a manager needs to head a virtual team. If you read this book cover to cover, it can seem repetitive, since many of the rules and tips offered in one area overlap with those in other areas. However, the book is designed to allow you to review specific management challenges and technologies, and to ignore areas that are irrelevant to your situation. We [...] recommend this clear, practical work to anyone who leads virtual teams and to the telecommuters and freelance workers who report to them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time in 1996.Somewhat dated now. Well done.
Even with the explosion in home based technology in the last three years the basics in the book are well researched and well written.I was really hopeing to find an updated version of this pioneer work. Having manyemployees now living the vision Ms. Bredin wrote about I require this bookto be read and kept/used as reference. It's almost part of the employeemanual.I know when they see the 1996 copyright date, and they think theyare doing something new, it seems a chore to have to read the book.In theend all have been happy they did. 101 Tips is a must-have desk reference for professionals who are contemplating or just entering the telecommuting world. It is exceptionally well-organized with cross-references, appendices, checklists, and a writing style that makes it very easy to find what you need and want. The author effectively delivers not only the mechanics for efficienttelecommuting but also, and perhaps more importantly, addresses therelationship dimensions within the family unit and co-workers. The book isloaded with inserts (or "Tip2"s). The telecommuter who diligentlyimplements all or most of these Tip2s will find new levels of personalefficiency and insights into relationships that can relieve many anxiousmoments. The resource guide in the appendix was an unexpected bonus. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I happen to have a state job that would never qualify me for telecommuting, but I got the book anyway just for kicks. Now, I am envious! The author did an excellent job of laying out the ways to convince your boss that working at home can be beneficial for all.It won't help me, but who knows, perhaps this book can be your ticket to satisfactory home employment!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book convinced my boss to let me telecommute.
With the help of Telecommuting for Dummies I was able to convince my boss to let me work from home 3 days a week.I was traveling 1 1/2 hours each way to work previously and taking care of three kids and my life was hell. Now I work in my home office and am home when the kids get back from school. The book outlined a strategy I could use with my boss and it actually WORKED!I amnow a happy camper. The book has lots of other good info about telecommuting, like how to separate your home and work life when you work at home, and how to organize your time and your office.I can't recommend it too highly! It's incredibly helpful!!

3-0 out of 5 stars An adequate reference book
I purchased this book last week.I found a few of the sections lacking (I wanted much more information). For instance her section on telecommuting scams only warranted about two pages. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I agree with secondnature review... could use editing.
I have read many RV travel books. This book has good subject matter, however, I find it strays again and again to the "isn't the wonder of the computer world amazing" theme. When published, this may have had more impact, but now the "wonder" is old news. I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the last.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books ever
This was probably the first book I ever bought from Amazon.com.I was doing research for how to stay online while going on a summer road trip and it turned out that www.roadtripamerica.com had a lot of information for me.I ended up reading the introduction to this book and had to buy it.I loved the way Megan just captured my attention and imagination.I still get tears in my eyes remembering favorite sections and I've forced quite a few people to read it too.4-0 out of 5 stars Phoenix One Rises!
There's always a catalyst to embarking on a "road less traveled" and, for Megan and Mark, it was a terrible tragedy.Yet embark they did, with all the courage and hope in the world that everything would turn out all right, no matter what happened to them along the way or how bleak things seemed.Megan takes us along to experience not only the external journey of new places and new friends but also the internal journey of doubts and frustrations. This is a delightful read for anyone who's ever wondered what it would be like to throw off the traces and explore. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be
Although this book has a lot of good information in it, this type of book should be updated frequently in order to keep up with the times. Most web sites are no longer in exsistance, and a lot of them are not legitimate either. The book tells you never to pay for information or in order to gain employment, however, most sites or potential employers listed require just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book full of information and inspiration
I purchased this book because I wanted to add an online component to my home decorating business (and I am a mom of two great boys). This book has been very useful. Now that my online business is flourishing, I continue to look through the book for more ideas. It is the kind of book that the first read through you get the plans to implement, then you read it again and get different ideas to use. Because the publish date was 2001 and the Internet evolves ultra fast, some of the information is a little old but that is only for a small portion of the book. This book is also useful for moms trying to decide if an online business is right for them and what it really means to work from home, (like we don't work already).I also keep this book handy for the inspirational stories of moms like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Travel teams
It gives children the chance to speak out without the noise while driving. It's a safe interactive program for wireless acess.Home networking and studying tips for children is awesome. My children love to be creative and has submitted request in childrens magazine that offers this type of program. It is good for mom's on the road.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the stuff you don't know you need to know
To put it succinctly "Teleworking and Telecommuting" is a must-have guide to anyone considering either of these working paradigms. The author provides and extensive analysis of all the benefits and pitfalls of working from home.He covers the personal characteristics necessary for successfully working from home, home office furnishings, balancing problems with family life and work life when at home, strategies for getting the employer to accept the proposition of working from home, and many other things that are critical to your success but often overlooked when considering working from home. The book ends with four appendices that provide a teleworker aptitude test and three sample contracts.I've been involved in teleworking for some time where I spend some time at the office and some time elsewhere providing work product. This is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have read and so is a highly recommended read for anyone who is thinking of changing their work style to a teleworking paradigm or who is thinking of taking a job where teleworking is required or an option. ... Editorial Review

There's a mad rush among small businesses to get connected to the Internet, and it's no wonder: an Internet connection means access to Web data, worldwide communications through e-mail, and the ability to put pages online to advertise goods and services. It's also a lot easier to make your little company look big and established on the Internet than it is in real life. This book is an introductory Internet text that explains the wired world in the language of small-business owners.Read more
