4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat dated but overall extremely useful
If you've gotten this far without actually looking at the summary information about this tome above, please note that this book contains nearly 1,000 pages. This book is a collection of research papers (of the sort you'd find published in books on HCI or from conferences of the ACM SIGCHI committee) organized into chapters by some shared topic (i.e. human factors, hypertext, speed/language/audition). Each chapter is preceded by a summary of the papers contained therein along with often useful bibliographic citation of related works, all grounded in their utility toward the field of HCI by the editors.5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Morgan Kaufmann Value
This second edition of a collection of great papers on human-computerinteraction (HCI) is a different snapshot of the field -- an excellentintroduction. In addition to the high quality papers, the text writter bthe editors, all highly regarded in the field, add a lot to the reader'sunderstanding.Recommended for students (required for all grad students inHCI), researchers, and for practitioners looking for something deeper thanguidelines.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good checklists, some outdated info & too many scare tactics
I was pleased with about the first five chapters of this book containing lists on how to put together a 72 hour kit, and how to stock a pantry, a system that prepares you for more than just Y2K, (eg. being out of work fora period of time). When it came to looking up some of the resources listedhowever, particularly readiness books available, I was disappointed.Of 32books that I was interested in buying, 16 were out of print, three were notavailable anywhere that I could find, and others had outdated and obsoleteinformation.I feel "Pantry" also employs far too many scaretactics, and was disconcerted to see canning and gardening books listedalongside books demonstrating the how-to's of using the black market, looting, ambushing, poaching, and searching through dumpsters for food!Ithink by far the problem facing us in 2000 is no longer the millenium bugso much as the increasing panic generated from reading books such as"pantry" that employ scare tactic methods (undoubtably for thepurpose of persuading you to buy the products advertised throughout thebook).I bought "Pantry" in search of pantry and canningresources and information. My advice:If you want information and haveaccess to the internet, do a search for Y2K, Pantry, Canning, etc and findplenty of resources and info, some of which, if you are still inclined toprepare, carry supplies and pantry kits at far lower prices than thoseadvertised in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Resource Guide EVER!
James Stevens has done a fantastic job of providing information on how to FIND preparedness products and companies. Some people can buy storage food and equipment at stores appearing on every street corner, but most of ushave to scratch our heads and fret and stew, wondering where to even BEGINlooking for the things we need to learn to be more self-sufficient. Thanks, James, for a wonderful resource book that makes it EASY to getprepared.Rita Bingham

1-0 out of 5 stars Another Y2K fear mongerer.I'm sending it back.
Family preparedness has always been important, no more so today.Howeverwith the purported "Y2K" scare, "survivalists", andother fear mongers have a new tool to push their agenda.Having read "Making theBest of Basics" I was surprised and saddened that this book uses thesame scare tactics so prevalent on the internet and employed by those whostand to profit from "Y2K".I was disgusted by the chapter onbuying precious metals.I cannot think of a less wise investment for thosewho truly wish to be prepared ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book!!
This is a GREAT book for people who know COBOL and need to know the differences among the COBOL versions. This book is LOADED with programming tips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author comments on the book
The book was written for experienced professionals, not for novices or entry level programmers. The book does not explain basic syntax of statements or other organizational aspects of a COBOL program. I wrote the book for the professional programmer who already knows COBOL and wants to move that skill to a higher level. This includes incorporating the COBOL language with the enterprise server environment for effectiveness and efficiency, and creating extended software architectures. 5-0 out of 5 stars Discuses the Different COBOL Versions
Covers how to improve coding techniques along with the differences in COBOL versions. Great for seasoned programmers too. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No PeopleSoft questions in this book
No peoplesoft like the editorial review claims. Plus, this book has very little useful information about interviewing. It's just a bunch of technical questions organized by chapter. The Oracle questions are out of date, for version 8i which was released in 1999. Don't get this book for help on how to interview. Get "Ace the IT job interview". I am glad I only paid $3 for this. It is barely worth that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this book
I have a solid background in C/C++ and I was hoping to fill in some gaps in other areas with this book. Unfortunately, given the poor quaility of the C/C++ information (and the sometimes-silly stuff in the "how to interview" section), I really don't trust what's in the rest of the volume.1-0 out of 5 stars Poor
This book suffers from poor editing, poor questions for VB, C++, Java and SQL. Many wrong and poor explanations and answers.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars No Fridge Cooking
If you want to live without a fridge, this is the book.Makes living without a fridge easy for anyone. Also cooking with woodstoves covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great use of home storage with or without electricity
This cookbook is good for anyone serious about implementing a home food storage program, as well as anyone enjoying "old fashioned" or outdoor cooking. When starting home storage, I wondered what I would ever do with all that wheat and powderedmilk, which are two of the foundation blocks of most storage programs. This cookbook has some very good, diverse recipes, with the added advantage of being usable in the event of power outages, however this type of cooking is tricky and is best learned before it is a necessity. Furthermore, I like this book because some of the recipes remind me of the types of things my grandmother and mother used to cook (steamed puddings, Boston Brown Bread) and that's also fun for the kids, even though time consuming for me. Some recipes are very simplistic (like PB and What? Sandwich), but the point is to list the nutritional values so that one could figure out a complete diet not lacking in anything just from very basic ingredients. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Y2K awareness-not news breaking/just common knowledge
From an author that has numerous books on prophesy, I am suprised that this book has only a couple of pages of biblical references. The book is good for those that are becoming aware of Y2K.For those, like myself, that are on top of Y2K, the book offers little additional information.Ifyou are hoping for a book that brings Y2K and the bible together, thendon't bother with this one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good section on food prep
This book, even though geared for Y2K type expected disaster, still has many useful tips for emergency preparedness.I found the food prep and storage section particularly useful. Also it had an excellent section on waste disposal which is often overlooked in other emergency preparedness books.Small and portable enough to take with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooking Up The Next Millennium
The Y2K Survival Guide and Cookbook (Ecovillage, TN) by Dorothy R. and Albert K. Bates is not your usual recipe collection. With the savvy of environmentalists ad the frenzy of those expecting emergency, Dorothy andAlbert Bates cover every area of survival and food preparation. Expectingthe worst case scenario - rolling brownouts and total black outs, failedutility systems and water purification problems - this book providesnatural alternatives: food storage, chlorine bleach to purify water, usingwood stoves, building your own composting toilet, and gardening. There areeven first aid and Morse code directions in the final pages. After copingwith any Y2K calamities, it's time to cook. In between survival guidelines, the Bates' book is filled with hearty recipes reminiscent of campfire food. As computers buzz blank, you can enjoy split pea soup from melted icicles, marmalades from sun-dried fruit, or shiitake joes from home-grownmushrooms.Even though The Y2K Survival Guide and Cookbook is intended forthe millennium-minded cook, it is an eccentric volume any eco-consciouschef should add to their library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure of a Book
In addition to the recipes and food tips that could keep a diverse group of survivors happy for years (who wants plain ol' Chili gets that, and who prefers dishes like Rice Noodle Pad Thai will be satisfied also), there isan excellent overview of food storage techniques that includes charts I'venever before seen on the shelf life of edibles, from an individuallywrapped apple to nuts in airtight packages.Read more

I just bought this not to long ago and it was worth every penny.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Y2K..........
This is an excellent book to get you ready for whatever is coming--computer collapse after a cyber terror attack, a civil uprising locally or nationally, bad weather or just everyday living. The chapters on food and electricity are worth the price alone. I recommend you also buy "Boston's Gun Bible" for an in depth look at guns you need, though this book hits well enough for those that are not "gun nuts". It gave me valuable insight on what I need versus what I THOUGHT I needed.

Y2K Kitchen, The Book prepares the average reader for anyemergency including Y2K, using practical information from food shopping tips to storage. It helps the reader take inventory of how the family eats on a daily basis and guides the reader to plan for an emergency without destroying the family savings.5-0 out of 5 stars This book tells you what to do after you know about Y2K!
With Y2K approaching fast, I have been trying to prepare myself by reading many books and visiting numerouswebsites. Everything I have read has been helpful, but none of them gets down to the basics like SallyStrackbein's book, "Y2K Kitchen".It is one of the only books I've foundthat covers all of these fundamentals as well as informing me in anarticulate (yet not alarmist) way of the types of problems we mightencounter on January 1, 2000.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How To Be Prepared
It is obvious (in hindsight) that nothing much happened on 1/1/2000.Whether it was a result of the problem being overblown or a testament to the incredible amount of work and money spent fixing it is a matter for speculation, though I tend towards the latter explanation.
3-0 out of 5 stars An anti-climax
Well written, well organised, but in hindsight - not so well researched. Okay. The Yourdons weren't the only ones caught up in the hype. Many others I had a lot of respect for were caught up as well. For example Robert Theobald, the futurist. I have known the works of Edward Yourdon since I started my batchelor degree - nearly 20 years ago now. After this book, I have to admit that I'll have a big bag of salt next to me when relying on Mr Yourdon's predictions. Hey, at least I did not bunker down and invest in a huge amount of instant food and an arsenal of firearms. But maybe that would have been too American.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice. . .
Credit to Ed Yourdon for inventing a new literary niche --pointing out a nonexistent crisis, writing a book about it, then writing another book debunking it! He hasn't, at the time of this review, written a bookcelebrating victory over the fearmongering that he helped to spark, but I'mcertain it will be forthcoming.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Collector's Item
After the big Y2K threat became a "non-event" I almost threwthis book on the trash heap. Then I realized that it could well be a collector's item one day. There is some sound advice for dealing with natural disasters, planning for record storage, and general common sense practices that are still worth taking a look at now that we are not in a panic mode. Can you imagine if you found a book in your attic entitled "How to Survive the Coming Great Depression" that had belonged to your great grandparents? It would be priceless. This is going into my attic for my grandchildren to dig out someday.

1-0 out of 5 stars ...and for Hyatt's next book, Meteors!
Hysteria and a dose of air time on CSPAN has made Mr. Hyatt the prophet of doom for the great un-happening of the millenium!Imagine all those people hunkered down on New Year's Eve expecting planes to drop out of the sky and ATMs to die, and you have the makings of a great parody.Hyatt's next bigproject is going to have intergalatic consequences to match the sales rateof this book. The scenarios greatly underestimated the strength of theglobal infrastructure and painted an alarmist view.I only hope Mike Hyattstays true to his chapters on Christianity and tithes the loyalties fromthis alarmist book so the truly deplorable aspects of U.S. society such asundernourished children and the low education level in the "havenot" states is at least impacted by this book.In the end if Mr.Hyatt really wants to make a difference in the U.S. write on the digitaldivide and use CSPAN time to change the priorities for the 3rd worldpoverty pockets we have here in the U.S.

5-0 out of 5 stars move it to humor section!
This book is absolutely hilarious!I don't know whether Hyatt really intended to write a parody, but nonetheless he succeeded brilliantly in doing so. ... Read more
